another drama that felt short in the last part for me
so let’s talk with the good :1) Acting, I think the leads were great and side characters too
2) costumes and makeup were pretty
3) I didn’t wanna start because I thought: « oh a story about brocade, it will be boring », well not gonna lie, like almost every drama, there are some more boring parts, but I actually like the brocade plot. it was different from the usual shop we see in some Cdramas and interesting to learn about brocade history. So the premise was interesting and well written in general, I think it was flowing good, FL working, growing their business, the obstacles, etc..
4) I liked the friendship and how they all worked together
5) OST was very good
6) cinematography was also good
7) I like seeing the development between ML and his father, family. Made me smile their interactions in the last ep (always bickering with father ahah) and he even called her « mother ». I enjoy it when I think they deserved forgiveness and a second chance. And he actually made some efforts. I think his father and family deserved it (not like some characters in other drama, like cough cough The rise of Ning). even FL with his stepmom.
8) FL brother: he grow on me. At first I was like, what a weakling. But he stepped up, stood his ground and he surprised me. Like when the mom was in prison, bro wasn’t giving up, I liked that. A supportive and kind guy too
9) ML : I liked him a lot. Like many, I love red flag ML, but I also like green flag ML😂 well if he is the ML (and not a useless stupid weakling) I will love him. Always team ML and SML hater. He was kind, supportive, respectful. Always there for FL, but never overstepping. Pretty intelligent and resourceful. He was a great ML. Also, such a great fighter, always finds this attractive ahaha it was awesome eps 23-24 when he was running back and fighting to get to FL. Zheng Ye Cheng is great with fighting scenes, he should do more dramas as a martial artist and actions. also in ep 36, the fighting in that like arena or in the last ep, last fight.
10) FL : intelligent, kind and hardworking woman. I liked how she was working so hard to continu her father’s work and the brocade business. It was good when she was turning the plans of the uncle against him, it was always satisfying. Used her intelligence for example to changed the family rules and can we say the deal in the last few eps ? Or went she wasn’t trusting Bai at first and keeping some distance, didn’t accepted (before the wedding in ep 24) the help of Bai or the ex. Some choices were a bit questionable or stupid, but anyway I think it fits her character…
11) the romance in the first 3/4 : I think the development was really good. Mature romance ?them slowly working together, trusting each other and falling in love. We could feel their love for each other with the little moments. Then came ep 24, I think the scene of him crashing the wedding was really good and I liked the dialogue. Even before that, when the ex captured her, he came to save her and I think that scene was also very good. We didn’t get much, but their married life was cute. We got 1 kiss only, but it wasn’t bad. The cliff scenes and some others after the divorce, some good emotional moments and we could still feel their love. They loved each other a lot and were both ready to die for each other.
12) villains : we’ll get back to it, but it was somehow interesting to have strong villains who were winning sometimes before their loss of course ahah
13) happy ending. we’ll get back to it also
so what went wrong for me :
1) the 2 side guys with unrequited love and possessiveness became so annoying and never ending
2) the last part when FL went into Bai country: didn’t like it and why did it last for so long ? We already didn’t get a lot of FL and ML dating, but their screentime together was so reduced in the last 8 eps? we got more of FL and SML together, it’s like they were almost trying to romanticize that? because what was the point of all that screentime together. I didn’t give a damn. If only they didn’t went for the same old cliche plot, the bad guy falling in love with FL and wanting to possess her… Truly uninspiring and uninteresting. What could have been an interesting villain (and he was actually pretty powerful too), felt flat.
3) There was some sloppy weird editing
4) Some characters died to easily.
5) Ning girl wasn’t really interesting to get that screentime, just like the ex, who could have had way less screentime (at last got some character development)
6) stupid unnecessary death. why did they killed off the female friend? such waste, they had the brother confess and being rejected for a while. they got together really late, we got almost nothing and then they kills her off for no reason ? even ML’s friend… WHY DO THEY ALWAYS KILLS OFF ML FRIEND OR RIGHT HAND MAN???? in so many dramas
7) FL crying and mourning for Prince Bai (the guy who literally, kidnapped her and her friends, threatened them, hurt and tried to kill the man she loves, tried to literally assault her….), was just completely stupid and weird to me (I got a bit the ick). I don’t care if she empathized or something, just no. And they wasted screentime on this, we could have gotten more minutes for sweet moments between the leads. I don’t get it, what was the point, I read not of this was in the novel and he didn’t even died. Why did they make him die protecting FL and her crying for him? writers trying to glorify second leads or something sometimes (like the princess Royal or even the rise of Ning, in there too they made him die by « saving » FL)
8) happy ending, but I didn’t really feel anything. Also, after all that, months of separation, we got a smile ? not a hug or anything. That was disappointing, even the « wedding » (because we didn’t saw the wedding again), gave me nothing. FL title was something I guess. And the villain died, deserved death.
Anyway, it was still a good watch for the positive points

Not my type of drama
Well, overall their acting was good, and mainly, what I liked about this story is that it was faithful to its title, Brocade Odyssey. A war for brocade 🥱. It's mainly about brocade during the Tang Dynasty. The story highlights the sufferings, struggles, and successes of a group of people trying to elevate an industry, helping the people dependent on it thrive and gain dignity in their craft.Ji Yingying: Three men in love with one girl. The female lead … Her growth felt sudden and easy for me 😂 and thrown into slavery. Big orders had to be taken to pay a debt… but I never really saw her complete the order... Also, to complete an order, don’t they need to buy things? Like ingredients for colors? If she gave all the money to her debtor, how did she buy the ingredients or collect them... Also Yingying walked into the Yang's house and agreed to marry to save her mother. That ended weirdly… But anyways, she was trying to save her mother.
Suddenly, FL wanted to start trade with Tabo. On the way, they met bandits, and their acting was whatever… They didn’t really act like bandits. Then suddenly, the prince of Nanzhou revealed his real identity, and a lot happened. The FL got kidnapped, and the trade had to be abandoned. A year later, after being forced into slavery, then somehow they saved themselves....
Ji Nan & His Mother: The brother of the female lead felt useless, but that was his character anyways...... He couldn’t do anything except weave brocade. & also fall for someone.... Also, her mother was always stopping her whenever the FL tried to do something. I understand that She just wanted her children to live a peaceful and happy life.
Nui Wuniang: Nui Wuniang’s ending was weak and senseless. She was suddenly chained into submission and pushed to that ending. It doesn’t fit the role she started as. Nui Wuniang was such a force but ended up in this way 😵💫....... It would have been a better story if she had been a villain to the end or maybe turned a good person . I disliked her character because she was bad, and her ending made her character feel useless. If she had to end up like that why did they even had her character 🫠
Zhao Xiuyuan: A person who was just obsessed with Yingying. Even after getting married, he couldn’t forget her, but at the same time, he wanted to be a villain, but couldn’t. I thought he would be a great villain.....
General Niu: He did so many bad things but the imperial didn’t do anything.... I felt that he should have been dealt with by the imperial court. He caused so much disaster, the emperor should have beheaded him. Also, was he really a villain? I didn’t see him much....
Yang Jingyan: A brocade officer. He felt like a lonely fighter. He didn’t really feel like the male lead, I mean, the female lead felt more like a strategist than him. Also, those scenes where he went to the wedding, being hurt everywhere but still standing to stop her from becoming a concubine of his brother, and then proposing to her to get married… Then after some rest, he came to marry her, but the wedding ceremony didn’t really happen out there…😑
Bai: Prince of Nanzhou, but came in disguise, trying to get the attention of all the businessmen of Yanjou. He rejected Yingying at first, then wanted to be friends with her, but he wasn’t sincere enough, though she kept telling him to be sincere. But He didn’t want to… He wanted to be a villain, but didn’t really give off a villain vibe. It’s more like he was just trying to do what his master taught him. He wanted to take Yingying after seeing her talent, but she didn’t agree, and in the end, anyways he died…
I was expecting something good from this drama, but it turned out to be really confusing and all over the place. So many things were happening at once. After episode 25 , I started skipping a lot, and after episode 32, I even took a long break. I ended up watching episodes 33–40 in maybe an hour. Since it was faithful to its title, I’ll give it a 7.

The acting of all casts is 100!!!
A slow burn love story , from friends to lovers. I like the chemistry between main couple ; their micro movements make the scenes more beautiful. The fact that ML is really natural at his fighting scenes and horse riding makes the scenes really enjoyable. And also the interactions betwen SML and FL are noteworthy, waiting to see how the story unfolds later . It is amazing to see how the FL go through ups and downs yet grow as a business woman, fyi she is sharp which i really liked . I like the bonding between Ji siblings as well ; one weaves the silk another one dyes it, got all that knowledge passed down to them from their father. I love all the details that are shown here on how Dyeing Workshops are operated , very vibrant. Apart from all these, i am enjoying the series , not skipping a scene as supporting characters are also good at portraying their roles. But The AI face 3rd ML just feels weird sometimes as it doesn't match well with the scenes. Overall good !Esta resenha foi útil para você?
Zhao Xiu Yuan [Face via AI] made it!
Zhao Xiu Yuan [Face via AI] : HAHAHAHA AI Face passes idol drama level acting! Although, I am not sure if Zhang Hao Wei didn't get cancelled that he could do any better with this boring EX character.Drama is watchable if you enjoy SPECIFIC actors. However put this next to Blossom 九重紫 that's airing right now, it won't compete. From a script, storytelling, characters, couple CP, cinematography, etc etc all fell short. However, if you watch it because you are fan of ML/FL then its enjoyable.
I am big fan of Zheng Ye Cheng. His Peking Opera background makes him a solid choice for these Heroic characters in costume dramas. He doesn't need constant doubles for horseback riding scenes, fight scenes, wire works, walking scenes, kneeling on the ground scenes.... (ahahaha like that 流光引 dude)
So I watch most of his dramas just for him, but he has zero CP w/ all the FLs thus far (expect for the Sleepless Princess).
As great as Tan Song Yun is, the pair just didn't work for me. Again, personal opinion.
Story is typical as is the dialogue. The evil character is always that actor.... Kind of lost count of how many times he played that type of character. It definitely did not need to be 40 episodes.

One of the better dramas of 2024
There are some dramas that I shelved after watching several episodes only to go back to when I have nothing to watch but this is not one of them. I look forward to every next episode. The later episodes are angsty and I wanted to get over them faster. This story is of several young people from the Merchant class of varying degrees of wealth during the 9th century Tang dynasty. We don’t often have a storyline solely of the merchant class though there is the inclusion of the 2nd male lead, a Prince Bai who is fashioned after a real Prince/King of that era. Both male and female leads and secondary leads performed excellently. I really liked the character Zheng Ye Cheng played and with his excellent performance here, I’ll look forward to his other dramas. As for Seven Tan, she did not disappoint. As usual, Brocade Odyssey is full of drama, romance, fight scenes, humor and Steven Tan feistiness and charm. It also has a good ending in case that’s important to you as it is to me,
The costumes, hairdos and jewelry were stunning but some hairdos and makeup did not do Seven Tan justice. In some episodes where her makeup was more subdued, she looked gorgeous as her natural looks are already flamboyant. Cinematography was also good so I enjoyed this drama very much.
There is also much to know about the Silk and brocade manufacture during the Tang dynasty which I had not known about. Silk was prized all over the world = remember the silk route? An inch of Shu brocade is said to be equivalent to an inch of gold even during that time. There is a wonderful Brocade Odyssey Campanion piece that a fellow contributor, Frost_Edelweiss, had posted. It is below this review section, under ‘ recommendations’ . . It’s a weath of information about the drama, the silk brocade industry and the Tang dynasty as it relates to this drama. After reading her postings, I realized how much rich culture was presented in the drama. I encourage everyone to take a look. Here is the link

When Villain is too powerful to Handle!!
What I liked about this story is that it was faithful to its title. The story is about the sufferings, struggles and successes of a group of people trying to bring an industry soaring to make the people dependent on it be able to thrive and have dignity about their craft.yes, there was a love story. Of a woman in all her facets. Her love for her parents, her love for her friends and her love for a man who's unwavering support for what he knew she could do and be made him sacrifice himself so that he could get to be by her side forever. Lovers they were, but not mushy stuffy lovers. What was in their heads was the bigger picture and they remained true to the end. That's one of the things I value most of Tan song Yun or Seven Tan, she is very particular about the stories she picks to play and is always a pleasure to watch her. Her leading man ZYC is a wonderful actor himself. They were indeed a match made in heaven with their use of nuances that enriched their acting. And what an incredible craftsman is Jin Chao!!!, we got 👏 to hate his guts as the evil princes trying to convince himself that he was good. Wao!!! Looking forward to seeing you all soon in some other play!
The drama started with a Sad tone after 15 minutes it turns out to be the funniest one.And the comedy is on point. What i like about this drama is the main character. Main leads are so enjoyable to watch. its not like some other drama Bossy rude ML and the Naive FL. Both are Savage!! Cunning but respectful. The realistic point about this drama is THE VILLAIN.They really did justice to the storyline. Like that's how villain should villaining.Last few episodes make u tearing up but try to keep patience.
Obviously rewatch it again atleast first 30ep.Leads chemistry was so good 👍

It is not an idol drama. 10/10
This historical drama is top-noch!! Great actors/actresses from leads to support characters, very interesting historical details, solid art direction, rich dialogues, and good balance between love story, action scenes (I will never forget how Yang Jing Lan rushed back to Yizhou to marry Ji Ying Ying) and brocade industry history makes it a treasure among this year dramas . Tang Dinasty border conflicts, the difficulties in establishing Silk Road, focus on working class and slavery , warlords and rich families rebellion against central power, instead of court conspiracies contribute to create very unique environment and story line . It is slow paced but there is no pad out episodes, no skip because it is not just one more drama about revenge. Also sadistic and smart villains (Jing Chao acting skills specially shinned on ep.39) makes it very fun and entertaining to watch. Last, it is a delight to see the mutual understanding between Yang Jing Lan and Ji Ying Ying, how they clearly communicate and evolve from allies to lovers without loosing the respect and trust they have for each other. It was not a boring and predictable love story. It is a beautiful love, family, friendship and social story. 10/10!!Esta resenha foi útil para você?

Worth watching, ignore the comments on the main page
This story isn't bad at all. What you are seeing is a bunch of people upset because it wasn't purely a romance story which the show never promised to be in the first place. Are there issues with some plot lines? Yes. But it's not as bad as some of the commenters / reviewers are making it to be. Plus it's very in line with what happened in the novel that this show is based off of so bashing the scriptwriter does not make much sense in this case.Spoiler Alert:
JYY is a woman and who is of a low status. There is only so much she can do. JYL, while much higher in status, was up against a general and a prince. Given all of that, the ending wasn't that bad. Plus they end up together in the end. As for the fl feeling sad for Bai Prince, who is one of the main villains, it's not that surprising given what we saw in the show so far. Anyways, that's just my take. Don't decide not to watch this due to a few comments on MDL or a low rating. This show is decent.
If you go into it with reasonable expectations and not just expecting a show solely focused on romance, you will enjoy it. So in short, this isn't your typical idol costume drama. The leads aren't always going to win simply because they are the leads but it's a happy ending.

Heavy Novel
The series was so heavy on me that it was like a heavy novel. Heavy Novel. Back and forth, unnecessary conversations, unnecessary fill-in-the-blank applications, versions, meaningless attractions such as one person coming in two minutes and another coming in two days, someone pursuing a devil becoming a toy in the hands of the devil after a while. While one was given a high rank, the other was not. The same positions, the same games, the same conflicts, the same thing repeated many times. We got tired of it. I was fed up. I found the leading roles incompatible. Let me say it from the beginning. I don't know why, but there was a sense of forcedness. As if the female lead was in love with getting ahead of the man. In my opinion, the best of the series was Chen Xiao Yun in the women's role. Jing Chao in the men's. Hai Yi Tian was a complete general. I don't know if anyone could have done a treacherous general better. I liked it very much. Our girl in the role of the daughter wasn't bad either. But since they always played the same thing, their roles weren't really understood. When the story started, it was more realistic and beautiful. She was doing her evil, making herself known. The jokes were on point. The longer the series got, which was 40 episodes too many. The series ended in 24 episodes. The extensions and squeezing made the series useless. It got really bad. It got heavy, it became meaningless. It turned into a salad of words. Kidnappings with unclear purposes, relocations, no sir, that family, that family, it turned into a series that was just a waste of time. Even 7 was too much for me to put in the effort. Unfortunately, you can't hold a candle to ending things that start well badly. In other words, you are good at this job. I liked the supporting roles and the other actors. Everyone did their job. I didn't like the leading roles. They should watch themselves. Either they couldn't keep the rhythm, or they were cold to each other. Or they wanted to get ahead of each other. I don't know. Or there was something wrong with what was conveyed. Some actors listen to the director and don't show their own game. Some want to put in something from themselves in order to be good. Acting has these things. Something like that can happen too. I didn't pass on that spirit, that excitement, that love, that affection to me. It was dragged on for no reason, there was too much unnecessaryness, illogicality was at its peak. In other words, reality is not valued at all for some reason. You can't ask why. It's something like that. It was a heavy series. Like a heavy novel.Esta resenha foi útil para você?
