This was, predictably, a huge miss. Cheese in the Trap has four loooooooong volumes, the drama was already too limited to tell the story, so a film? oof, so much was rushed, and so much got excluded.

Everything was underdeveloped, the characters, their relationships, their history with one another. Seol's academic life is non-existent, we just see her attending class, but we don't see how much her college education means to her, her money issues are also not discussed, her family was not even introduced, so you miss out on the complicated and interesting relationship she has with them, she really only exists as a love interest.

The Baek siblings were also a huge victim of the script. In-ho's passion for the piano was barely discussed, and the psychological struggle he's faced since graduating from high school was cut, In-ha's goals and how she was stifled by her family was also excluded, really the siblings had no depth here, just one or two flashbacks and a bunch of scenes of them being violent. And the relationship between In-ho and Seol? There's nothing there, you would never guess this story is supposed to have a love triangle subplot.

And then there's the cast... one thing I can't complain about the drama was how well-casted it was, truly perfect, from the leads to the supporting characters. The film's cast was missing a lot, from charisma to chemistry, it was completely devoid of emotion.

(I also truly disliked the editing and score choices, it was so chirpy and quirky at times, it threw me off).

Who knew Yetis love sashimi?

If you ever thought, “What would a movie be like if you moved King Kong from a tropical island to a frozen mountain top?”, Snow Monster attempts to answer that question. The movie felt like an old Toho monster movie only with slightly better CGI and monster costumes.

In 2045 a van carrying scientists travels through the mountains on the North Pole. I really hope that was a translation error or else there had been some cataclysmic tectonic shifts. Lead scientist Xiao Qin’s instruments showed high magnetic readings and a geothermal hot spot under the van. The scientists believed that high magnetism could result in strange genetic mutations. As if to prove them right, a gigantic hand erupted from the snow causing the van to plummet over a cliff.

Professor Lin asks Xiao’s ex-boyfriend, Ren Yi Fei, to help them find her and he joins the team made up of mostly soldiers. Inside an ancient set of ruins in what looks like a jungle, the team discovers a tunnel filled with centuries old artifacts, skeletons…and deadly prehistoric birds. The men avoid becoming human bird food when they find the exit while being chased by the creepy birds and land outside, in the same location where the lost crew disappeared. The “rescue” crew is confronted with a snow shark (Jaws 5: Just When You Thought It Was Safe to Go Back Skiing), the Yeti, an avalanche, and a tribe of snow elves. Lucky for Ren, the snow elves are friends with the gentle, humorous Yeti. The real danger is a friend who isn’t what he seems to be and his betrayals lead to multiple deaths.

Snow Monster's script was all over the place and most of it did not make sense. I guess they figured if people would watch a movie about a skyscraper tall snow monster, it didn’t matter if the rest was nigh on incomprehensible. There seemed to be a message about leaving endangered people and animals alone, but it was pretty thin. The snow elves’ costumes revealed too much skin for people who lived in eternal winter. Maybe the magnetic field had mutated them in such a way that they were impervious to frostbite and hypothermia. The “science” in this movie was ludicrous and I have no idea what kind of geographical map the writers used, but it wasn’t for this planet. The acting and CGI were serviceable, nothing special. Norman Chui was the only actor I recognized and I’m always happy to see him even for the brief minutes he was on screen.

In order to enjoy this movie on any level you have to have developed a high tolerance for men in monster suits and be able to laugh at the absurdity of giant snow sharks. As is often the case, the humans were the biggest monsters in the movie. The Snow Monster was a sweet fluffy Bumble, as long as you didn’t interrupt him while he was eating his sashimi dinner.

Simple but engaging story

The movie is part of the JFF+ INDEPENDENT CINEMA 2023 line up.

If you're interested in Japan or Japanese society / culture it's well worth a watch.
The movie follows the day-to-day lives of 4 siblings while they decide what to do with the shop they've just inherited from their parents.

The atmosphere of the movie feels very real and acting is very natural. What I enjoyed most, is that feeling that you're actually in Japan.

The production is also very good, and you don't get that "student film" vibe you generally get when watching independent movies. And at 1h22, you won't have time to get bored.

excels in the realm of action but lacks the engaging story

awe-inspiring acting performances that truly captivate the audience. The actors' talent shines brightly throughout the film. However, the movie falls short when it comes to storytelling. Beyond the first 20 minutes, the plot loses its grip on the audience, leaving viewers craving depth and substance. While action enthusiasts may find enjoyment in the film's relentless sequences, those seeking a compelling narrative may be disappointed. In essence, this movie excels in the realm of action but lacks the engaging story that could have elevated it to a higher level of cinematic excellence.

I thought this film would emphasize the hardships of a mother who lived a double life as a killer and mother, but it turns out to be more of a John Wick wannabe.

I did enjoy it tho, and I didn't really think much about anything while I watched this, so I can ignore how the action sequence was fun but stiff and unconvincing at times and just enjoy the star power this film has. It's exciting to see Haeng-seon imo now has a real daughter, then the charismatic Sol Kyung-Gyu, Lee Jae-Wook ahjussi, and other popular actors that I forget where I saw them before.

Last night, I think I watched this film in the most perfect possible time to watch a horror movie.
I caught flu, it was heavy rain, probably something to do with Herman storm cmiiw, then I turn off the light in my bedroom and left the window opened, the thunder sounds so clear and it's cold, so i put on jacket to balance the temperature and finally watched it.

Basically about a bookclub who reads banned books in a strict era of Taiwan's martial law era, then one day because of a simp, they messed up. They could make this story as torture porn but they pursue the supernatural, psychological horror way and I like it.

I love how this film goes, the nightmare realm was so dark, strange, decayed and serve something feels like dark fantasy with the ghost that much more like a monster.
There's a flashback to normal realm, this is when they tried to gather pieces of memory and let us know what's actually happened, even though to be frank, the story is so predictable but the way they craft it in strange horror way is what made me keep watch it.

Despite the predictability, I love the nightmare segment, would love to watch something strange like that in other film.

First of all, this film is so freakin beautiful. The mountain, the forest, the lotus pond, etc., they really shot this film beautifully.

The story is quite interesting, stand into more traditional mystical folklore horror with the inugami, but there's more conflict caused by the curse that's actually quite dramatic and complicated, and it also has a moment of surprise.

It's not pure horror though; it has a romance that's actually the one that drives this film forward; it was quite normal, sweet, and sensual, before finally there's a reveal towards the end that surprised me.

As a horror film, those frightening moments came from intense meetings of the characters, the Bonomiya family, that led to digging more into this Inugami thing, and delivered by the actors' solid performances, it was great.

Once again, this film deserve praise for how beautiful it looked; precisely captured the sublimity, the calmness of the rural village of Omine and Yuki Amami's beauty.

I think that's all, thanks.

I watched it the last night of February. I had an idea of what I would type, but I find it hard to put it into words, so I watched it again two nights ago, and with the knowledge I gained from the first watch, the second watch offered a different experience that really amazed me.

Basically, this is about a landlord who spies on his tenants and takes notes about their routines, but one of his tenants, a girl, gives him an idea about breaking the deadlock in life; the landlord takes her words to heart and decides to shatter his tenants' routine lives.

The way the landlord did it and how it really had a massive impact on his tenants was so miraculous. He set up the tenants one by one before eventually linking them all together in a madness. It's involved (an almost or is it?) incest, unfaithfulness, lust, and superpowers; that's all, if I'm not mistaken. The landlord sabotaged just a little thing in them tenants disciplines lives, leading to such a doomed fate but entertaining in my eyes.

Overall, I find the atmosphere exciting, like in crime films, but there are moments when this film could feel frightening, like when we are introduced to the mysterious tenant.
This film looked so beautiful; the set, the lighting, the shot, the effect, etc. were just impressive.
The acting, which all the actors did well without exception, is pretty much one of the strongest reason why this film could be engaging and enjoyable.

There's still more this film had, the twist that whether it's there or not wouldn't be a problem, but I like that this film had it. The twist made this film go full circle imo, and gave the landlord proper closure to his story, which ended with satisfaction.

That's all I think. Thanks.

Dang, I love this film; it's so exquisitely brutal, and the aggression and tension in every kill were so impactful and satisfying. Pretty much reminds me of The Sadness when I saw the high level of violence this film has, it was bloody and very brutal, I could feel the pain of the stabs or everything Lai Sheung does to her prey.

The story itself, I think it's simply about a woman who kill to lower property prices to buy her Dream Home, other than that, if you look at the flashback, maybe because it was part of her wish since childhood or to fulfill a promise to her mother to buy a flat, but i'm still confused about her big urge to achieve it, is it because the canceled contract? i don't know.

This film has funny moments too, only briefly but "burst on to his face" made me laugh out loud.

i don't know what to type anymore. That's all. Thanks

This film doing very well in the first half, with its story about Ting, a young actress who takes a job working for the police department, re-enacting crime scenes, and her dedication to make the re-enactment to be as realistic as possible, pretty much make herself well-known to the public and the ghosts as a good actress for the job; even the ghost of Miss Thailand in the synopsis murder a police woman who assigned to do her re-enactment in order to use Ting service, and it did make a quite intriguing story, also with all that great jumpscare and horror sequence was just muach.

But...

They put a twist in the middle of the film, and I don't want to blame it at first for breaking the great momentum, but I did try to be optimistic. With the film becoming bad after that twist in this second half, I think I need to blame it; they just simply told the story I don't want to follow, even though it's still about the victim. Also, this second half looks like those generic trash horror films.

I really want to curse this freakin' film. Just damn, it's very disappointing.

It wasn't like I expected sadly

At first when I saw the trailer I was really excited to watch it especially because of the fact that it was a revenge movie and all but I was quite disappointed with the plot as it felt like it was missing something such as depth and the story in itself.

I think the movie could of had a better plot overall.

The writers really did it dirty and didn't give it what it deserves .

I feel like the actors of the movie are really good but just the context of 8was written in a langue

A comedic twist to a courtroom drama

Entering into this movie without any prior knowledge of the video game, I embarked on a cinematic journey that was quite a pleasant surprise. While it may not be a traditional murder mystery filled with suspense, this film excels in its own unique way, primarily through its eccentric characters and over-the-top acting.

The narrative revolves around Phoenix Wright, an attorney whose competence doesn't quite match his dedication to defending his clients. However, when he takes on the case of Maya Fey, a psychic medium accused of murdering her sister and Phoenix's own mentor, the stage is set for a captivating legal drama. Adding to the complexity, his childhood friend Miles Edgeworth, a prosecutor with a flawless record, finds himself in a murder-related predicament from an old case. As Phoenix decides to defend Edgeworth in court, the film takes a delightful twist, filled with unexpected turns and humorous high jinks.

Two aspects make 'Ace Attorney' truly stand out. First, the inventive use of display technology in courtroom scenes transforms the legal proceedings into a dramatic spectacle, complete with ups and downs that keep audiences engaged. Secondly, the film's vibrant characters and their performances leave an indelible mark. There's no room for subtlety in this grand theatrical production; it's a world where actors embrace their roles with maximum emotiveness, all for the sake of comedic effect. In this courtroom drama, the verdict hinges not on the gravity of evidence but on the theatrics of the attorneys. The characters' costumes and hairstyles, reminiscent of those from the video games, infuse the movie with a distinctive creativity and showmanship.

In conclusion, 'Ace Attorney' is a murder-mystery court drama that doesn't take itself too seriously, opting instead to entertain with its loud, comedic characters and an unapologetic commitment to the aesthetics of the video game it's adapted from. While it may not follow the conventional suspenseful murder mystery formula, it succeeds in delivering a unique and enjoyable cinematic experience.

Hooray for girl power....?

You come home after a long day of work and see this on your Netflix homepage. You watch it because you had a long day of work and you wanna turn your brain off. Story is the same old rehashed ex-bodyguard/assassin/fighter coming out of retirement/unemployment/being a bum to take avenge his/her parents'/friends'/pets' death. Main character takes on waves and waves of baddies and never loses. After you finish this movie, you go to bed and sleep and then the next day begins. The only thing that remembers this movie is your Netflix history.

This movie is entertaining, I'll give you that. The fight scenes were exciting and left me wanting more, despite being on the verge of a seizure with all the rapid jump cuts. Main actress not willing to do the stunt work herself? Strange directorial choice. Bad CGI at some points as well. In addition, the acting wasn't anything to be raved about; and I'm shocked to see that the lead actress actually won a Baeksang previously. She had 0 chemistry with the friend whose death she was avenging. Like girl, why? Logically I get it, but emotionally I'm not feeling it yknow? And this was probably the greatest flaw of the film. Don't get me started on the random high school girl that sort of became her sidekick lol.

Cinematography and music wise it seemed like the director wanted to emulate the western style of thrillers, which I can't say is necessarily a bad thing (I personally quite liked it, particularly the music) but others may disagree. The ballet parts were quite well shot and kind of reminded me of Black Swan. I was hoping to see more ballet scenes, since this movie is called ballerina after all but unfortunately not. In fact, when I first saw this movie I expected it to be about an ex-ballerina turned assassin but in actuality the only association to ballet is the main character avenging her friend who just happens to be a ballerina. Strange name choice...

In conclusion, only watch if you just want a mind-numbing thriller to pass time. This movie is utterly forgettable and you won't remember (or want to remember) any of it. Just one of the many B-list thriller movies that Netflix pumps out. A better female centric thriller would be My Name, which has way better fighting scenes, better acting and a slightly more fleshed out plot. I'm only giving this a 6.5 because it's only 1.5 hrs long and I was fairly entertained by it lmao

For fans only!

What have I just finished watching? I am so weak: I keep succumbing to the hype and then I do not understand why I am always disappointed. Definitely, I will never learn! I understand why the japanese never released this movie subbed: it is really only for those already familiar with this story's light novel/anime universe!

I won't even try to write the gist of the movie down: a fantasy world, families with powers, and of course a court conspiracy.
The first half of the movie is Cinderella. The second: any zombie/crazy virus movie! I actually liked it very much at the beginning. Cinderella meets her prince who is cold and forbidding. He stays like that for about 5 seconds and then he falls in love and turns all mushy and the only thing he's interested in is her while there is a virus or whatever outbreak all around! And of course, she saved the day and they live happily ever after.... I was really hoping for a more developed story between them. The ML character actually lacked depth and the sudden change from a block of ice to fluff and cherry blossom was a bit too much to take! I guess he was hiding his kind side behind the cold soldier exterior: it took the girl 48h to make him fall hook line and sinker for her mousy submissive demeanor! Truth be told that demeanor hid a strong willed person who knows how to fight for what she finds important!

I have no knowledge of the source material so I am judging this just like an ordinary member of audience who happened to watch a movie because the title and the poster looked nice! No more, no less! The movie has very high production values: the cinematography is stunning, direction has a sense, writing is solid, the editing is suspenseful enough, the special effect efficient. The actors did their job well, the main couple had good chemistry. Music was really good as well. There is nothing wrong with the product and yet I was bored. Definitely not my cup of tea!
