One of the best movies I watched recently

It's 3am and I just finished watching this movie and bawling my eyes out.

I am not a fan of sad endings. Dramas and movies are an escape from reality, so I stay away from sad endings because why need them more when you see them in reality.

But this movie surprised me. I didn't mind how they ended up... the years and years of being together but still not together. I just found it all so profoundly sad, that to be with someone but still not be. I didn't mind the sad ending. I went in blind for this movie, seeing the synopsis never knowing it didn't have a HEA. But I think I wouldn't have liked this movie if it had ended up with a HEA. Because this was the perfect ending for a perfect story.

I loved the plot. Out of the box, out of the movie, into a movie, in a movie. It was perfection. The story, the cast, the music. It's been a long long while since I have loved a movie this much. I don't think I would rewatch it again because I can't go through the pain again.

I would recommend this to all, even someone who stay away from sad endings. This movie is the one where you should at least watch once.

Rating: 9.5/10

Master Z diverges from the Ip Man path but employs much of the same formula. Cheung Tin Chi who lost to Ip Man behind closed doors abandoned teaching and practicing Wing Chun and left town with his son. Now residing in Hong Kong, he will have to face a host of new challenges including a disgruntled Triad member, a drug smuggler, and a corrupt police force. It doesn’t take long for him to realize what the audience already knows, he will have to put the cape back on and fight. Fight for his son. Fight for himself. Fight for his people.

Cheung Tin Chi had been working for Yuen Wah and Tony Jaa as muscle for hire with a code. He earned enough money to open a small store under his apartment. Fate puts him in the path of Julia and Nana who are running away from Tso Sai Kit who runs the local opium den. Cheung protects the women but makes an enemy of Kit. Soon he will be working with Julia’s brother Fu who has a bar that caters to Westerners. He also comes into contact with Kit’s sister who is trying to convert their gang into a legitimate business and Owen Davidson, a giant of a man who runs an upscale restaurant and is a philanthropic businessman or so he would have people believe. Soon Cheung is in a battle for not only the lives but the souls of the people on Bar Street.

Master Z was a by-the-comic-book interpretation of history. Bar Street was pristine and gleaming, far too perfect looking. Cheung’s son even idolized Black Belt/Batman. The villain was bald, white, and enormous, similar to Daredevil’s Kingpin. You know he was a villain because he ate steak which is code for barbaric, I guess. Michelle Yeoh’s complicated Triad boss showed that the Chinese can clean up their own messes when she disarmed her drug dealing brother. But it would take a team effort to defeat the foreigners. The dialogue could be heavy handed and some of the supporting characters weren’t very strong actors but fortunately, Zhang Jin was captivating to watch even if his character was thinly drawn. Michelle Yeoh added some movie star cred to the cast and gravitas to her elegantly lethal character.

Since this was an Ip Man spinoff I expected good fights. Some of them were. Zhang Jin actually practices martial arts so that’s usually a good start. Yuen Woo Ping had to dip back into his Shaw Brothers days and bring out the wires. I don’t mind a little wire-fu, but it has to flow naturally. In a street fight as Cheung and the bad guys flew up and down the buildings awkwardly, all I could think about was the epic building fight from Chocolate (2008) with Jeeja Yanin sans wires. Much of the wire work in Z was not orchestrated well. To quote another superhero, “Jarvis, just skip the spinning rims.” Dave Bautista beating a good guy like he was using a paddle ball was another over the top stunt but showed the big man was a super bad guy. Zhang Jin was fun to watch and his moves were smooth, confident, and fast. And I will never tire of Michelle Yeoh being a badass whether hand-to-hand or with a sword. I wish Tony Jaa had been able to cut loose, but this wasn’t his movie. Kung fu movie alum Yuen Wah made a welcome guest appearance. They had plenty of veterans on screen and the excellent Yuen Shun Yi choreographing the fights. Most were well done except when they completely defied gravity in less than fluid manners.

Master Z was entertaining even when it lacked nuance. Cheung Tin Chi and his new Bar Street family made a competent addition to the Ip Man series. The grand fight between good and evil when Cheung finally regained his mojo was what kung fu and superhero movies are made for, especially when the people bond together around the hero to take back their town.

A wonderful movie

This movie is, in my personal opinion, extremely good. Although I have to admit that the switching from present to past and back again can be confusing if you aren't concentrating on the movie. Like all Jacky Chan movies, they all have their individual delights and highlight. This one is not any different. I find the storyline of this movie quite good and the actors + actresses all did a very good job bringing this movie to life.

I would say watch it, if you find the synopsis and trailer intriguing / interesting. Rewatch also depends on your individual opinion of the movie after you are done. For me, I have watched it twice so far. I especially love the duet theme song. Beautifully sung!

Work better and Smarter, not harder

I watched the trailer, I loved the trailer, so I decided to watch this as well, buttt It appeared that the trailer and this movie were both two separate movies lol, I was wondering why the trailer was different from the description provided here.
ANYWAY I don't regret watching, i really loved it, too bad they haven't credited the whole cast + the director, I even searcged for them on MDL but couldn't find them! they're probably not actors anymore:((

Great Movie

Grew up with Jackie Chan shows, therefore I always "chase" his movies. His movies never disappoint. It is always filled with action and also humor.

This one is also a great show to watch. Packed with alot of action and suspense, definitely something for people who are big fans of Jackie Chan. I would recommend to watch if you are a) a real big Jackie Chan fan and b) you love action packed movies / non stop action.

Where your favorite games and movies comes from

you may not know, but this movie is where a lot of your favorite games come from like Fortnite call of duty, Apex legends, etc. along with your favorite movies and books like hunger games squid games are very heavily influenced from this movie, so even if it may not have been the best acting or whatever it’s I’d say it’s quite original because it’s is where all the other stuff comes from basically.

i’d say it would be naïve to not call this a masterpiece this is definitely a masterpiece in the sense that we wouldn’t have a lot of shows and games like we do now if it wasn’t for this movie so insanely good and influential movie it’s worth the watch just to you know watch it it’s good very good acting probably wasn’t the best but they were also all like 15 so it makes sense and they did pretty good for their age

There’s a lot of violence, so just keep that in mind if you’re gonna watch this but that’s about it it’s pretty good it’s good heavily recommend

"You have a lot of courage to show up here!"

The Vengeful Beauty was a surprisingly entertaining martial arts film from 1978. Shaw Brothers movies could go either way during this time frame. Chen Ping more than held her own with the boys—Lo Lieh, Yueh Hua, Norman Chu, and Johnny Wang. Her character was pregnant and she still suffered no fools with a sword!

Emperor Yong Zheng pretended to be a friend to the people all the while he was having ethical officials executed by the Flying Guillotines. And in a clear sign of tyranny, he orchestrated book burnings and the executions of anyone who wrote anything remotely critical about the imperial court. Rong Qiu Yan’s husband ran afoul of the emperor and while she was away honoring her deceased martial arts master with her junior, Wang Jun, Jin Gang Feng sent the Flying Guillotines to her house and eliminated everyone. On the run to protect the child she was carrying she came across Ma Sen working at an inn. Brother Ma was also on the run as he had been a Flying Guillotine but could no longer stomach the murder of innocents. He joined her as well as Wang Jun when Jin sent his lethal children after them.

Qiu Yan was smart and could take care of herself. Chen Ping brought a nice depth of emotion to the vengeful and pregnant heroine battling assassins. After one bit part in the original Guillotine film and his scenes cut in the second, it was good to see Norman Chu in a leading role as an ex-Flying Guillotine. He had to endure an atrocious wig in order to do it though. I almost didn’t recognize him because he looked so young—no wonder, he was only 23 at the time! Lo Lieh in a gray wig played the leader of the Flying Guillotines. He gave a strong performance as a father whose children were eliminated one by one.

The sword fighting was average for the time frame, a lot of swipe and falls, but still fun to watch. The flying guillotine, one of the strangest of kung fu weapons, made a couple of appearances in this a loose sequel. There was some wire work and reverse filming, nothing over the top and edited fairly seamlessly into the fight scenes. One fight included a topless Susan Yam Yam Shaw which weirdly didn’t feel too gratuitous. There was also a battle high in the bamboo long before Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The House of Flying Daggers.

The Vengeful Beauty benefited from a well written story by Szeto On. There was no shortage of vengeance and deaths, yet this story didn’t feel like it was hastily sewn together with tropes from a hundred other kung fu films. Most importantly to me, Szeto let the heroine struggle and shine. Qiu Yan was fierce and vulnerable. Kung fu movies would soon be taken over by mostly male casts, so every competent female warrior feels like finding a gem.

Not really a rom-com

The actors deserve some sort of award for doing so much with so little. The story doesn't follow a clear path and there is no character development. The romance is also non-existent and I felt no chemistry between the two leading actors. I did chuckle a little every now and then, so I wouldn't call it a waste of time, just make sure you have nothing better to do before sitting down for almost 2 hours to watch this movie.

The questions has been answered

The long wait is over, the sequel movie is here to slay. Our narrow escape has been solved our agony in waiting four our curiosity has finally come to an end. Some say that the first sequel is better but for me its way more better than the first one. The all star cast makes it more beautiful plus its special effects are very stunning. The story continues as a matter of fact it has a successful ending.
I like the time travel effect which is very relevant to the story. I nevert expect it biggest plot twist all along I know the monster living inside the body is Mu Reuk infact Thunder used her body to save Yi An. The monter is living inside Yi An"s body for a long time.
I love to see Kim Woo Bind and Ryu Yun Jeol in one frame two of the hot oppas are here. I like their comedic side of characters here. They also show their heroic stunts in this movie.
All in all this movie really gives a good vibes, I can she the iconic ending wherein they won their fight against the bad guy.
I love the ending wherein. Mu Reuk follows his heart desires and go to Yi An's world.

Unexpected Gem

Short summary:
Qing Heng is a dead soul trying to find his love who he's been searching for for a very long time. But dead souls are required to give up all their memories, so how can he fight the rules of heavens to find his beloved?

Saw this on iQiyi and decided to give it a try and was very pleasantly surprised. I spent most of the movie wondering how on earth they were going to resolve anything and surprisingly, it did! I've watched much longer full length dramas that managed a fraction of the plot resolution that this movie did. We find out major motivations of main characters and there are surprises along the way.

You might get less out of it if you're not familiar with Chinese mythology about Meng Po and reincarnation. An important point to know is that canonically, Meng Po is the lady who cooks up the soup of forgetfulness that one must drink before getting reincarnated.

It's the length of a movie so the main points are not overly complicated but I think the execution was very well done considering the constraints of telling a fairly involved story in 90 minutes. I thought the CGI was actually very well done for what I assumed was not a movie with a big budget. I recognize the female lead from a (passable but not great) low budget costume drama I've seen before and the ML seems to have been only in support roles so far. They both did a solid job acting. Some of the support cast didn't sell their roles anywhere near as well but it hardly mattered when they had so little screentime.

Exciting Film, unfortunately with a lot of stereotypes

The film is exciting and thrilling. Song Joong-ki's acting is really excellent, he's also good in normal K-dramas, but he's even better here. The entire film gets 10 points from me, even if I now criticize it. The film largely takes place in Brussels and I have to say that not a single European is portrayed as nice or sympathetic in the entire film!!! This is very unfair. Europe is groaning under the refugee burden of the last few years. In Brussels there are now two queues in front of the asylum office: families, women and men traveling alone. There are simply no more shelters to house people, so a lot of single men actually end up on the streets. That's terrible, of course, but at the same time it shows that the current system is breaking down because of the sheer weight of it. As already indicated in the film, many people flee for economic reasons and it is very difficult to do justice to people without a passport in individual cases. Here, too, the Belgians are portrayed as almost inhuman, it's so nasty towards the hard-working people in the authorities. Of course there are no "normal" Belgians in the film. Only the blonde woman f****g preferably in a pack is shown, the violent drug lord and criminal ...The most brutal xenophobia is constantly shown. This paints a one-dimensional picture of a complex situation in which there is more humanity and help than shown here.

Cozy, yet melancholic and thought provoking

What happens when we die, or rather, how do we leave things behind? That seems to be the central theme of this movie. We meet a group of people who are no longer living but not quite dead yet either. We get to know all of the characters and their attachments and ultimately get to see them have satisfactory conclusions and move on. The highlight of this movie has to be the parade scenes themselves. I have no words to describe the beauty of those shots, all I can say is that they made me feel I was looking at the universe from up close and afar at once and every light was captivating.
The acting is very well done. I watched it for Ryusei Yokohama and although he didn’t have that big of a part, he really captivated the audience. He always takes on different roles and impress me. The music and sets of the movie are also great. I particularly enjoyed the caravan/ post apocalyptic yet cozy vibe of their little camp.
To summarize this is a film not about death, but about aftermath and memories. It’s general message is optimistic and well delivered and it is definitely worth checking

Horizontal or Vertical?

I watched The Grandmaster years ago and while I thought it was visually stunning, the story left me wanting. After watching several Wong Kar Wai films recently, I decided to revisit it and see if my perspective changed.

In 1936 Foshan, China, Grandmaster Gong Yu Tian is coming to town to pass the torch to a new Grandmaster. The consensus is that Ip Man would be a good choice but he will have to face Yu Tian. Yu Tian’s daughter, Gong Er and Ip Man eventually spar and a connection is made despite the fact that Ip Man is married and has children. Who is Grandmaster and who is horny for whom becomes irrelevant as the Japanese invade the country. Ip Man loses his home and his fortune as he and his family face poverty and starvation with much of the rest of the people. Because he belonged to the wrong political party after the war, he moves to Hong Kong around 1950. He will once again run into Gong Er, but her life has taken a drastic change.

As with the first time I saw this film, the cinematography was gorgeous and lush. Beautiful people in beautiful costumes filled the screen. Smoke from cigarettes or trains wafted and circled about as if alive. Snow and steam formed the perfect backdrop for a cataclysmic fight. As did rain and puddles when Ip Man fought a dozen men at the beginning of the film. Music as much as the standard Wong Kar Wai dark palette of green, yellow, and shocks of red set the mood.

The fights were entertaining, but more stylistic than realistic. Forced close-ups and slow motion made the fights more dance than danger, even when people were thrown through windows. Many times I wished they could move the camera back to show more of the full body motions, but with actors who are not martial artists that likely wasn’t possible. I was happy to see old school kung fu actors like Lo Meng and Lau Kar Yung make brief appearances. And I could have used much more of The Razor played by Chang Chen.

Tony Leung Chiu Wai was an elegant Ip Man, but it was hard to connect to the character with the uneven storytelling. He was also a man with a wife and children longing for another woman. Song Hye Kyo as Ip Man’s wife was mostly an afterthought. She had scarcely any lines. The romance was focused on Gong Er as was much of the film. Zhang Zi Yi gave a good performance as the daughter who vowed to return the family’s honor even if it meant her death. Another issue I had were the relentless voiceovers and intertitles, they completely broke the rhythm and mood for me, distancing me from the characters.

The Grandmaster was a striking film to look at but not as much fun to watch as the story often stumbled. And aside from the fight at the train station, much of it will fade from memory as it did the first time because there was little substance to cling to.

【!SPOILERS below!】

►CHARACTERS:
‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ This movie is both female-focused and female-led, meaning that even though the story ultimately is centered around a man, the focus is mostly on the women around him, including FL, SFL, and TFL, who are sisters/in a sisterhood (not sure since they refer to each other as sisters but they never clarify being related). Unfortunately, though, all three characters are quite lacking in both personality and development. Not only that, their dynamic, which one would naturally think would be an important part of a female-focused plot, is severely one-dimensional and underdeveloped.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ I feel like this is worth mentioning by itself as well, that the main conflict between them is that they're all three in love with the same man... This also isn't elaborated upon or developed, so it feels ridiculous at best and flat-out insulting at worst. In the very end, they do seem to have some sisterhood going on, but it was really embarrassing to see three 10/10 immortal sisters trying to kill each other over some guy. ?

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Then there's the ML, SML, and the antagonist. ML was quite fine. I thought he was cute, and him not being overpowered was quite refreshing for a ML in a fantasy movie/drama (in fact, he needed saving by far the most!!). His dynamic with FL was also kinda endearing, as was his dynamic with a supporting character. SML was honestly just creepy to me. He has a weird dynamic with FL, which seems to tread uncomfortably between that of a brother and that of a lover, so I wasn't a fan.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Finally, we have the villain. She was underwhelming. We don't really get a whole lot of development on her. In fact, she barely appears at all. At the very least, though, her motives weren't because of love, so it could be worse.

►ACTING:
‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Overall quite fine. I wasn't really expecting stellar acting, and it met my expectations. Whenever there were awkward moments, it felt more like a direction problem than any of the actor's problem, so I don't really have a lot of complaints about them.

►STORY:
‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Here's where the biggest issue lies. The story is incredibly confusing. It's clear after the very first scene that the drama is more on the slice-of-life, romantic end of fantasy than the epic, and I was really looking forward to that! Unfortunately, with the pacing they took, it felt more like they were aiming for a drama rather than a movie. They dwell on certain things and characters for entirely too long, then skip important parts of context or development for no reason at all. We get so little development on the antagonists, the world, the main characters, basically everything. The only thing that was somewhat decently paced was the love story.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ The missing context, narrative structure, and development crippled the story so badly. Without those, it's just characters kinda doing something vaguely in the same thread as the original set-up. It's a real shame, because the synopsis and even the beginning seemed so interesting, yet the movie somehow managed to be both too slow and too rushed at the same time, making it overall just confusing.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Another issue was with the power level of the three FLs. They're supposed to be powerful immortals, and we're shown that even though their power is limited due to circumstances, they can still do quite a bit, yet when actually needed, they seem so pathetic. This inconsistency was especially noticeable with FL. On one hand, she can carry ML on her back from one dimension onto the other, but she can't even break free from some ribbon binding her arms. I'm so confused.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Then there's the original premise, which is vaguely that because the Sun God had disappeared, all the men of the mortal world no longer had emotions. Not only is this portrayed extremely stupidly, but it's also not developed further than this. It's only really brought up in a handful of throwaway scenes. In the end, we don't even get to see what ends up happening to the mortal world. Was the issue fixed? If so, how did men cope with suddenly being able to feel again? We don't know.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Overall, I really think the story seemed very promising and had a lot of potential (it was especially quite unique, with it being female-centered and having a unique setting and all). I believe it would've worked better as a drama of at least 12 episodes where the world, plot, characters, dynamics, and backstory could be (better) developed.

►PRODUCTION:
‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ Overall, quite satisfactory. It doesn't try to be epic, so the CGI use is not as terrible as in other, more ambitious movies/dramas. It's still noticeably low budget in terms of sets, outfits, etc., but of the watchable and not too-noticeable kind. The cinematography, however, was quite nice. It had some really nice shots.

Final Note: I watched it with good subtitles on Viki, so I don't think I was lacking context in terms of bad translations. The story is simply confusing.

◇ Would I watch it again? Maybe (Despite everything, I still enjoyed it).
