I watched the series and the movie version side-by-side. Apart from one scene that's not in the series and some minor editing changes, they are identical.
So, if you want to choose, I think the movie is a bit too long to watch it in one sitting (it's easier to find your place again in a series). Forthe series, I found the flashing light and the electric noise at the start of each episode grating, especially when I have a headache.

Things I liked:
* To do an "enemy-to-lovers-trope" is not easy. You can easily draw things out too long or have a power imbalance -- if the relationship reads more as "bullying" than as "mutual antagonism" it's really hard for me to understand how they would ever end up as lovers. (Looking at you, Make Our Days Count) But here, it ends relatively early, both give as good as they get -- and especially Jang Jae Young as the first instigator backs off when he realizes that he's crossed the line.
* I also loved Chu Sang Woo's character, which reads as somewhere on the autism spectrum for me. It's done better that in the original material, imo.
* The supporting characters were great in rounding out the story.

Things I did not like:
* I think I'd have liked to see the discussion about excavators and the subsequent drawing of one on Chu Sangwoo's arm (rather than the ugly veggie thing).

Overall, the pacing was good, and even if the general storyline was predictable (which is par for the course in romance dramas), the journey of both protagonists was lovely to follow.

took me in an emotional roller coaster

This was the first Chinese movie I watched in the theater and also my first-ever review on MyDramaList.

Story: I LOVED IT! As someone who has been struggling with low self-esteem and losing weight all my life, this hit a little too close to home. Her growth in self-confidence and realizing that just because someone is nice to her doesn't mean that they have good intentions was beautiful to watch. It felt like I was along with her on the journey. I felt her happiness, sadness, frustration, anger, and also her helplessness. I was in tears when she was walking to the boxing match and you can see her past self in the reflection.

Acting: I think everyone did a good job. I didn't feel like anyone was doing a half-ass job.

Music: Connected well with the scenes and the background music was phenomenal. Loved the song they used when she was having her training montage.

Overall, loved it and is worth a watch.

Perfect Cop Comedy!

I absolutely love movies like this! This kinda humour is my kinda humour, silly (but not ridiculous), and light-hearted, but not at all taking away from the serious message of the movie, nor the fast-paced action. The two leads had THE BEST chemistry, I loved their strong characters and their acting was on point. Their awkward pauses and how they switch up when hiding things from their superiors was hilarious and I laughed every time. For those who have watched Midnight Runners, I definitely recommend you watch this movie! And if you enjoyed this movie and haven't watched Midnight Runners yet, WATCH IT!!!

Don't waste your time

This had the production value of a high school class project. The filming (and quality of the filming) was awful, the acting was weird, and that kiss was one of the most horrendous things I've ever seen. There were also weird sound effects that made this even more unbearable of a watch through. I will never get the twelve minutes back that I wasted on this

An interesting move, but it’s not what I thought

Love Japanese Love Movies? It is for you

I did not have any idea I was going to watch this movie today. It was at 11:30 pm yesterday I decided to watch it from a recommendation from April Bride(from MDL). Now it is 3:13 am 04.04.24 currently.
Being a romance genre lover, I have always been looking for good Japanese love movies or dramas. They are fast paced, extremely good acting, emotional, leaves a message for the viewers. For all these reasons, Japanese movies tops my romantic genre collection.

Now about this movie---
As the name suggests, it is a story of two lovers who were their first love to each other. They were kids when they started to feel love for each other. Again as the plot describes, the male character has a grave disease which gives him an ultimatum to live until age 20. Although we got to guess the ending, but still at our corner of our heart, wanted him to survive. I knew the plot can't be good according to movie production in case he survives, but still the hopes of letting him live more dragged me to feel rollercoaster of emotions alongside Mayu, and all the other characters involved. The father doctor also played a great role. I liked the fact that he allowed her to love the boy even though he was so ill. It shows he was not a heartless person as Takuma thought.
Mayu's emotions and her feelings were indescribable. Her passion for Takuma could make anything possible. We saw the proof. She was playing around but she was capable enough. That's what I couldn't believe when they made the daughter of a doctor so dumb. She was definitely not dumb. She knew what she was upto. Her passion and dedication for her love inspires me to believe in love.
Takuma's feelings although could have been misunderstood at the middle but he also was genuinely in love with her. It's just that his illness sometimes made him doubt about everything. Well it can be possible that his feelings were not described so vividly to make us viewers imagine what we want to, and I would definitely think the positive way. Atleast in movies I can experience the kind of love I could only hope for.

Overall it's a fantastic movie . If you don't like sad endings, maybe you can skip but it isnt something you gonna regret. Give it a try. Happy bingeing!!!

A Hopeful Tale of Love and Escape Triumphs Against Insurmountable Odds

This movie offers a compelling narrative that intertwines the destinies of its protagonists amidst the backdrop of adversity and the pursuit of redemption. Through the arduous journey of Loh Ki-wan from North Korea to Belgium, the film explores themes of resilience, love, and the human spirit’s capacity to endure. Despite occasional departures from realism, the emotional resonance of the story remains intact, captivating audiences with its engaging plot and heartfelt performances.

While grappling with technical shortcomings, the film’s central message of hope and resilience shines through, leaving viewers with a profound sense of reflection and empathy for the struggles of refugees. My Name Is Loh Kiwan stands as a testament to the power of love to transcend barriers and illuminate the darkest corners of the human experience

Didn't like the FL at all!

It's short and doesn't take too much time involvement, but while I was watching it, I kept wondering how soon before it was going to be over. Overall, my complaints were with the writing.

1) My biggest gripe is the way the FL is written. Desperate, clingy, immature - I got the feeling that she was more afraid of being alone than anything else. To try to hang onto someone that doesn't want to be with you is so sad.
2) Cha Hun's acting was really bad. His face remained emotionless, his movements were wooden, and watching him try to act was just uncomfortable.
3) FL and her best friend - he's stuck with her through NUMEROUS relationship disasters. Their relationship was cute to watch, but her having that many ex-boyfriends would give me pause before getting involved with her. She's kind of a "love the one you're with girl." Basically, I had a hard time believing in a romantic relationship between them.

A group of women outsmarting corrupt men.

Smugglers is like Ocean’s 8 minus the grand heist. This female-powered action adventure is not really about smugglers but more about how ordinary people found ways to make and share the profit from the illegal activities. It also realistically shows a number of smuggling-related aspects, such as repackaging and corrupt customs officials.

The film is not without flaws, but good character development brings so much more to the table. Kim Hye Soo never disappoints, no matter what character she plays, and pairing up with Yum Jung-ah elevated this movie into something more than simply an action drama. It draws stronger feelings of sisterhood and emotion. Zo In-sung gives his best as a corrupt police officer that you love to hate. In my opinion, the star of this movie is Go Min-Si. Despite being a supporting role, her character really stood out in helping carry the story.

The plots are not very complicated. With one or two twists that are constructed around allegiances and betrayal, they manage to make the audience gasp and anticipate more. The story develops well, with a good balance between comedy, drama, and action. I like that the comedy was well placed and not overdone, and the switch in tone doesn’t make the story look too weird. Kudos to the props team for recreating the unique 70s vibe. The attention to detail never failed to impress me.

All in all, it’s an entertaining movie, and it's always nice to see women outsmarting corrupt men.

A tribute to a pioneering figure in Taiwan's LGBTQ+ community

When they go to visit Mickey, their terminally ill former English teacher, two men and a woman remember their youth, when they began their friendship during their high school years.
After saying goodbye to the sick man, they return to the old intensive school to remember their years of study and their rebellious youth. Suddenly, quickly, colorfully and festively, the story goes back in time, to 1994.
At this point in the footage we have been identifying the main characters of the Taiwanese youth romantic drama 'After School', from 2023, by director and screenwriter Blue Lan, about coming of age.
Cheng Heng, the main narrator, is a teenager and only child who aspires to be a filmmaker, although his father insists that he study mathematics to become a teacher. Enrolled in Success Cram School, he takes remedial lessons to help improve his grades. However, instead of paying attention to his studies, he spends most of the day interrupting lessons and playing pranks, such as calling the school secretary, using his voice to make sexual advances, or setting fire to the school and provoking a fire with the consequent evacuation of students, teachers and administrators.
Cheng Hsiang is Cheng Heng's friend and also a troublemaker. He is the typical cute boy in the class, and many of his classmates dream of being his boyfriend, with the exception of the class beauty, Chen Sih, whom Cheng Heng has a crush on.
In addition to games and studies, the two boys share a bed in Cheng Heng's house, since his parents have taken him in, knowing of his poverty. They practically do everything together, from sharing a toothbrush to joking about their dirty, semen-stained underwear.
Ho Shang, an obedient and rule-abiding student, is the third in the company, known as the three musketeers of success, although not always of his own free will. Son of Wang, the director of the intensive school, is dragged by the two best friends in their misdeeds. We will soon learn the reason: when the exasperated principal wants to expel Cheng Heng and Cheng Hsiang, his wife will remind him how Ho Shang, in elementary school, was bullied by the older students, and the duo always protected him.
As we anticipated, Cheng Heng believes that studying at school will allow her to be close to Chen Sih, a girl with a strong character who defends herself. However, Cheng Heng is too nervous to ask her out.
With a main arc in the usual teen romantic comedy style, we follow the friends in their teenage pranks, falling in love and family relationships, used mainly for laughs, in an approach that takes up most of the film's 124-minute running time. .
Based on true events, when Mickey, a new substitute teacher with progressive ideas about teaching and society in general, takes over the classroom, the two young people discover a mentor who finally offers them proper guidance about their lives, by talking to them about romantic relationships and sexuality and teaching them to understand homosexuals and themselves.
Mickey openly addresses issues of sexuality education in the classroom and beyond, and encourages his students to think freely. Upon learning that he also dreams of being a filmmaker, Cheng Heng will admire the professor even more and will have him as a role model, interested in adopting his rich philosophy of life.
An embarrassing home accident causes Cheng Heng to suffer a burn in his groin. This will be the reason why students begin to speculate that Cheng Heng and Cheng Hsiang may have a romantic relationship.
However, this same event will also serve as a pretext for Mickey, aware of the rumors, to offer advice and guidance to a student who is currently going through a period of doubts and insecurities regarding his sexuality.
Meanwhile, Chen Sih begins dating the trio, Ho Shang fights with his parents over his two friends, Cheng Hsiang experiences a homosensual awakening, and Cheng Heng becomes more open to sexuality under Mickey's positive influence.
Michael's appearance permeates an atmosphere of freedom and fun. In truth, his dream is other than working as a teacher. The "awakening" he will generate in the students, in completely different directions, that eventually occurs due to his influence, takes the narrative down a completely new path. The story unfolds in a surprising way, this being one of the best aspects of the entire film, which should definitely be attributed to the way Blue Lan handles the twists.
At this point, the comedy transforms into drama, which reaches greater intensity as the story progresses, to the point that the last part, which also returns to the opening scene, borders on the melodramatic. Although this last aspect does not always work well, the truth is that 'After School' never abandons its intention to entertain.
At this point, multiple LGBTQ+ characters and stories are introduced into the story. The film puts homosexuality in the spotlight. However, despite exploring many relevant topics with the goal of educating and raising awareness among viewers, the stories barely scratch the surface instead of highlighting complex experiences. On the other hand, for the moment they perpetuate superficial stereotypes.
There is an excessive abuse of melodramatic scenes, especially when Cheng Heng's parents catch their son watching a gay porn video (which causes the incident noted above) and then catch him in a pose that suggests he is kissing his friend, for example. which his parents overreact while crying, lashing out at the two boys, condemning their son and expelling Cheng Hsiang from the house where they took him in.
The director, Blue Lan, seems well-intentioned. He dedicates his autobiographical film to Mickey Chen, his real-life mentor, an esteemed figure and pioneer in Taiwan's LGBTQ+ community. 'After School' pays tribute to someone who was instrumental in producing documentaries focused on queer and gender issues, actively participating in street protests advocating for equal rights for gays and lesbians.
Kipo Lin's editing results in a fast and fairly adequate narrative, although the extensive flashbacks to scenes already presented could have been avoided.
Comments on LGBT rights in the country of the time are quite frequent, without ignoring the simplicity of the messages and not describing gay issues with sufficient nuances. Even so, they address problems such as the pressure that adolescents felt in the 90s of the last century from their parents (they still suffer today) to succeed on the "correct" path, that is, the heterosexual one, the heteronormative, interpreted as studying in a good school, being able to enroll in the best university, getting an excellent job after graduating and getting married and having a magnificent family, especially with many children.
In that conservative and heteronormative society, concepts like homosexuality definitely have no place. Much less homosexual marriage, recognized only in the country 25 years after the events narrated in the film.
This approach adds depth to the story and reinforces the film's positive intentions, although the overall attitude here remains "light" to the point of becoming idyllic at times. In general, Blue Lan does not significantly lose its sense of measure.
The performances fit perfectly with the narrative style of the story. While the character played by Zhan Huai Yun exhibits impressive chemistry with Chiu Yi Tai's Cheng Hsiang, who is equally good, also in the way he handles his coming of age, even though the former's role is reduced to that of best friend.
Charlize Lamb as Chen Sih provides the necessary female element in the story as a bone of contention who eventually shapes the lives of the young people as well, in another quite attractive presence in the film.
Blue Lan himself plays Cheng Heng quite convincingly, both in the humorous and dramatic moments.
While Hou Yan Xi as Mickey is excellent in the role of the progressive teacher/mentor, Chien He Wu as Ho Shang promises a meatier journey, stealing the show at times, particularly after his transformation, when he finally spreads his wings. and he dares to fly without caring about his father's prejudices, but there is not enough development of his character and his conflicts.
On the other hand, the convincing bromance between Cheng Heng and Cheng Hsiang delves into romantic territory when they share a moment of intimacy, but the result does not meet the audience's expectations, failing to delve into feelings or portray the romantic nuances of the relationship. Despite addressing LGBT+ themes, the film avoids telling a homosexual love story. The cinematography follows brilliant paths, in an approach that coherently adapts to the narrative.
'After School' lacks a good script. Its poor writing reiterates all the predictable tropes. Sentimental messages fail to strike the viewer's nerve. We have seen this film about rebellious young people and mentors who guide their students on other occasions with better results.
The film highlights the importance of finding a mentor in life, a guide and educator that young people can look up to.
Mickey's arrival in the classrooms also eventually moves in the same direction of providing moments of reflection, but also of fun, adding to the narrative of the film, but the "awakening" of the young people, in completely different directions, which eventually occurs With the teacher's help, he takes the narrative down a completely new path. Frankly, the way the story unfolds is as surprising as it gets, in one of the best aspects of the entire movie, which should definitely be attributed to the way Blue Lan handles the twists.
Despite being cliched and cheesy at times, 'After School' is still a very entertaining film that manages to present its commentary eloquently, although its greatest feature comes from the fact that it will repeatedly leave the viewer with a smile on their face.

just a bad ass woman being a bad ass woman to avenge her friend

a lot of the reviews bring up the lack of plot but i didn't see it as being an issue. its a simple story about a woman who avenged her friend who was done wrong. the action scenes are amazing choreographed and shot. the cinematography was amazing. the colouring was beautiful. i realy enjoyed this one and would watch again on a day i wanted a female led action film.

p.s.
i do kind of get the ick that the fl and the director are dating. it just feels weird to me. the actress held her own and was absolutely amazing so it definitely doesn't take away from the job she did. i originally tried watching this film when it came out but stuff came up and i never finished it. i came back to it because i have become interested in the actress through her work in wedding impossible. i went through her list of work and saw she was in this so i decided to give it a go again and i do not regret it one bit.

This is so good that I forgot to review this last year.

Yes thats right I was speechless. I didnt know what else to do after watching such masterpeice.

The monster is just us.

Is it bad? or Is it good? Do we have to tamed ourselves? Should we feed it? Should we embrace it? Should we kill it? Can we run? Can we stop? Can we look back?

We actually dont know.
Does it matter? ...

As long there is happiness to everyone.

A Mother's Struggle For Her Son

“Monster” is an intriguing movie, told from the perspectives of 3 individuals, a single mother who is overprotective of her son and wants justice for him, a well-meaning teacher who finds himself in the middle of an almost impossible situation in which he is falsely accused of hitting a child, and a young boy who is coming to terms with himself and his feelings for a friend. Although not quite the psychological thriller one would expect, “Monster” does a great job in shifting our perspective, in as much as we are constantly being asked “who is the monster?”, while viewing the movie. We are not looking for a monster, but rather seeing victims of circumstances that we empathize with throughout the film and the question of who the monster is becomes the furthest from the audience’s concerns.
