Suspenseful, colorful, cheerful and even sweet – entertaining in several ways
"Check in Hanyang" nonchalantly takes elements of the modern lifestyle and the high-end five-star hotel industry of the 2020s back to Joseon, puts up-and-coming stars of today into robes and uniforms of another time and provides them with various challenges and group dynamics as part of their apprenticeship (while making the world a better place). The competition among the aspirants is fierce. Fair play is rare. However, one or the other is eventually less concerned with employment than with their very own, secret mission. The KDrama is brought to life by the charm of these youngsters. A piquant detail, though: one of those young men is actually a woman dressed in men's robes. You may guess, there´s room for plenty of funny situations.
The female protagonist actually has a murder case to solve on her own behalf – but suddenly she finds herself (and everyone else up to the audience) in a suspenseful polit-thriller with romantic icing.
The KDrama also benefits from the sharp chemistry between the owner of the Yongcheonru and his top of the range innkeeper. Here, Kim Eui-sung and Kim Min-jung can directly tie in with their controlled, explosive cat-and-mouse relationship as father and daughter in "Mr. Sunshine" as a successful pairing. With their charismatic presence, the veterans of South Korean cinema and TV significantly contribute to intensifying the dramatic overall pattern. Thus the handful of pretty rising stars may with good-humoured esprit fully indulge into playing their way even further into the hearts of the audience.
Actually, the story is about the hunt for a golden key, of which there are two parts – a key that some are highly interested in, all the way to the king. This hunt even goes over corpses. Thus, the double life of those hunters – old and young alike – is eventually getting quite dangerous.
Suspenseful, colorful, cheerful and even sweet – “Check in Hanyang” is entertaining in several ways. Actually, the first part in particular offers quite a load of fun and games with tricky group dynamics and demanding challenges for the competing candidates. In the course of the second half, however, tension, depth and drama are gradually increasing.
The fictional story draws courageously from the rich tradition of Joseon with a wide variety of selected details. The historical setting is thus mainly inspiring as a colorful, exotic backdrop of a rather timeless political thriller. All of this quite beautifully staged.

decent, but needed some serious trimming
give this drama a try if you’re looking for an easy watch. it has a fairly predictable premise, with a girl cross-dressing to keep her life safe. however, the cast did a great job with what they had. i really liked the chemistry between the main four characters, which made their interactions enjoyable. the pacing would've been fine if this series was 12 episodes long. even though the plot wasn’t groundbreaking, it had enough charm to keep me entertained. if you enjoy historical dramas, this one might be worth watching.Esta resenha foi útil para você?

Tropey with a great start, A VERY LONG DRAGGY MIDDLE, and a satisfying ending
Finally it's ended. Now that I've finished episode 16. Well.I think it ended on a rather high note but I just can't forgive the draggy pace and the fact that this drama turned overly dramatic from episode 5 onwards.
The romance wasn't there and the leads had not 0 chemistry but -1000... And it's the second drama in a row with Kim Ji Eun where she literally has a good buddy vibe with her partner but SUCKS on the romance aspect (the kisses were terrible but fortunately there weren't a lot). The revelation of Deok Su being a girl came also too late for some character(s) I won't mention to save the show.
This drama's biggest crime in my opinion is that it never embraced fully what it promised in its teasers: fun, friendship and some inn shenanigans. We got that for 4 episodes and after that the revenge plot took over and the fun left the room and never came back. It started to get draggy for no reasons, and honestly I think it would have been better if they had condensed episode 5 to 12 in 4 episodes turning in a 12 episodes series.
By episode 8, the only reason I kept on watching was because I had passed the middle mark and I hate to drop shows when I've invested already that much time. But honestly it was a struggle. I kept hoping the frienship and fun would be back desperatly but it only made a small appearance at the end of the last episode with a weird post-credit scene on top.
The highlight were Kim Eui Sung who is just terrific in every single role I've seen him in but he plays the vilains so so well. I hated him as Lord Cheon but my GOD he was GOOD especially his descent into madness, that was terrific acting, thank you sir!
AND Jung Gun Joo as Cheon Jun Hwa . As much as I didn't like the trajectory his character took, he was just wonderful through all his phases, as the good friend, the jealous psychopath and the atoning son. For me, his character stole the show and I'm just SAD that there's still no news of him getting a proper lead role in a major drama. He definitely deserves it... and the fact that he's drop dead gorgeous doesn't hurt either ( yeah I appreciate ART when I see it)
The other actors did their jobs but honestly pretty forgettable in my book apart from these two, though Han Jae Suk playing the King did have some memorable moments.
Suggested rating: 6 based on the criterions given
Personal rating: 7 ==> Classic average good, nothing refreshing or new but overall well done BUT HORRENDOUS pace that sucked my energy dry and made the watch tedious for most of its run.
In spite of how tropey it was, the drama had its moments, but it's a one watch. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone... BUt if you're planning on watching it anyway... I'd say watch it if you're REALLY busy and you need to be disciplined in real life. Say, you're currently studying for your upcoming exams, or you are about to pass some special qualifications for your job. It's distracting enough but not to the point of making anyone obsessed so you'll be able to stop watching without any problem.
Also. I found the ending EXTREMELY SATISFYING, no loose ends (except for the stupid marvel-like ending - to quote another MDL member), and I got to say, at least they delivered on that, which is why I didn't go below 7.

don’t watch this for the romance
Don’t watch this for the romance, you’ll be disappointedSo this started pretty good, it was funny and entertaining. I was enjoying the friendship. It became more serious and I liked some of the actions that was happening. Like the episode she learned he was the prince, I liked that scene
Acting was good, especially Jung Gun Joo. he nailed the « villain » going delulu kinda crazy really well, was impressed by his acting.
I liked Seol Mae Hwa a lot and Go Su Ra was a good one
villains were somehow interesting
Romance :
Not really any chemistry. The romance wasn’t written well, no proper and enough scenes for me to feel this romance. The kissing scenes were really bad, which is not helping. Some scenes were good to me, like the scene by the lac(river? Anyway not important😅) with the fireflies or the episode they were playing guess, trying the rooms, when they were applying the mask. But in a hole, the romance wasn’t giving.
16 eps was too much, it dragged at some point. just like ML finding out she’s a women, that was ridiculous. Took forever, as always, they needed SML to know early while ML looking stupid can’t figured it out💀💀💀 and find pretty late. They dragged this for no reason and it became so nonsense after all these hints and he couldn’t see it, that was annoying, took more than 10 eps.
The ending, I don’t know, I was expecting the cousin to have the throne and I think he deserves it (it was rightfully his anyway and that was the only way to make FL and ML end up together), but in general the ending was disappointing for some reasons. Happy ending I guess, the horrible kiss again at the end could have been cut out… at least all friends again, that was a good point.

An Fun Chaotic Mess.....!
I honestly don't like historical dramas, the only one I've ever liked is Moon Lovers... (not counting Aos since that's a fantasy)...but this show is honestly so much fun... the characters are so fun and their banter is adorable...
The story has a fun adventure vibe...!
The search for the certain something has them all on edge and I'm totally engaged...
KJE is a solid actress and all her works this year showed that... from the cold boss in Branding in Seongsu to the cute reliable paramedic in Love Next Door...!
BIH is similarly on the rise... and his dimples are a bonus!

Started out good, but went downhill midway through (SPOILERS MARKED)
I really liked it at the beginning. It was entertaining. Although I was starting to get a little annoyed at ML's stupidity in not figuring out that FL was a woman when there were so many clues.I still enjoyed it though. But then... All the plot holes, things that made no sense at all. It just went downhill.
The FL and the ML didn't have many romantic scenes with each other. I felt like the SML and FL had more to do with each other. Because the ML found out so late that FL was a woman, I felt like the love/chemistry wasn't built up. I can't remember where or how exactly they fell in love. It was just suddenly there.
Also, SML turning out like that... it really didn't have to be.
Then... the last episode... such a disappointment. I really didn't like the last episode and that ending. I so wanted to see those bullys kneel before the ML after they found out he was the prince. But well... did not happen.
Now a little spoiler (Does not have much impact on the story tho)
I dont understand what that dang opening scene in episode 16 was about. The prince was cut across the back by a sword but could still carry FL??? HOW????
At first I was like, “Oh, ok, he might be passing out because he can't take it,” but no. He was able to carry her home? What the heck is that? Is he not a human being?
And as if that wasn't enough... this was just forgotten throughout the whole episode. After crashing into wood, hitting his back on the ground and getting a patted on his back.... No reaction. As if his wound had healed within a day.
I cannot- I'm so sad that it ended like this. Such a mess. It was still somewhat enjoyable. I mean, I watched it to the end. But it could have been much, much better than this.

Gets Progressively Worse
Disappointing is an understatement for this series. It starts off interesting and you enjoy the bonding of the 4 main characters but slowly you start to lose your patience. It became hard to watch and I had to leave half the episodes for the end to binge which I watched on 2x and it still felt too slow. There really isn't much for me to say about this show. It doesn't have comedy but maybe a few moments that make you smile. Romance is barely there. It's best not to pick up this show for that reason. The mystery isn't really worth watching for either. There aren't any extraordinary fight scenes. The leads are charming. The only other good thing is watching their friendship and bonding in the first few episodes of the show.
The ending was okay. I wasn't blown away by it nor did it redeem the second half. The chips just coincidentally fall into place.
The OST is alright.
There is a suggestion that there might be a second season but I really hope they don't bother. There is nothing left to be told that would be of any interest.

A fun and exciting drama to watch!
There were three reasons why I initially didn't want to watch this drama.First, I'm not really a fan of stories where a girl is surrounded by multiple guys, and vice versa.
Second, I'm not into the gender-bender genre (I’ve only watched Coffee Prince and You're Beautiful).
Third, the historical (saeguk) setting—I’m still traumatized by The Red Sleeve.
But in the end, I decided to watch it because I kept seeing funny clips on TikTok.
The first few episodes were interesting, so I thought, "Might as well stick with it, it's ending in four weeks anyway."
Honestly, this drama dragged a bit when it came to Prince Muyeong and Deoksu. I think it took way too long for Prince Muyeong to realize that Deoksu was a girl—it should've happened around episode 8 or 9 instead of episode 12.
Watching it was kinda draining because, up until episode 12, none of the characters knew they were all heading in the same direction. They kept too many secrets from each other for too long. Episodes 7-11 felt a bit lacking, but episodes 12-16 were really solid.
I saw a lot of comments saying this drama should’ve been just 12 episodes, but I actually think 16 was the right choice. The palace conflict was quite complicated, and the reason episodes 12-16 were so good was that they finally started resolving that conflict.
Episodes 7-11, though… ugh, the bully trio was too annoying, they had too much screen time, and their scenes felt unnecessary. But it was still fun to watch because the four main characters had great comedic timing.
For me, the highlight of this drama was the character development.
Villain Cheon Mak Dong, this guy was unbelievably annoying. He really got on my nerves, and even until the end, he didn’t back down. I don’t think the Yeongcheonru fire was an accident—he saw Yeongcheonru as his, and if he couldn’t have it, then no one else could.
Once again, I always love Kim Min Jung’s characters. She always plays these cool, morally gray roles. And Seol Mae Hwa? She was honestly the MVP of this drama. So strong and patient—she waited 12 years to execute her plan carefully.
Cheon Junhwa’s character development was also really well done. When he ‘snapped’ and turned into a villain, it didn’t feel sudden at all. The writer had been dropping hints from the beginning that Junhwa was the type to take shortcuts to get what he wanted.
Like during the bedsheet washing task—while Lee Eunho helped Deoksu rewash them, Junhwa just bought new ones from Seol Mae Hwa. Or when Deoksu asked Go Sura to switch places with her while being followed by the bullies, Junhwa chose to rent a room instead. And when Deoksu got captured and interrogated, Junhwa sold his assets and went straight to negotiate with the minister, while Eunho stayed with Deoksu first before heading there.
So when he became obsessed with Deoksu, I wasn’t surprised. Fortunately, even though "blood is thicker than water," Junhwa grew up in a good environment and was close to Seol Mae Hwa. That’s why he was able to make a different choice from his father. And that, to me, is great character development. It also reinforces one of the drama’s messages: just because your parents are evil doesn’t mean you have to be. This also applies to Prince Muyeong—my favorite character in this drama.
Even though Deoksu is the main character, I’ll talk about Deoksu first because, to be honest, Deoksu was a bit reckless here. Maybe it’s because of her environment, the trauma, and the hardships she faced growing up. I can understand that. At least, by the end, she figured out what she truly wanted.
Deoksu is strong and incredibly smart, especially when it comes to strategy—she definitely inherited that from her father. Although she was blinded by revenge at first, she eventually realized what was truly worth fighting for.
By the way, I feel like Kim Jieun is way too pretty to be ‘mistaken’ for a guy. So throughout the show, it didn’t really feel like she was in disguise, lol. But to be fair, from the back, her build kinda looked masculine, and her movements were convincingly boyish. Still, she’s just too pretty—it was kinda funny that no one noticed she was a girl.
One thing I really liked about this drama is that no one sacrificed themselves for someone else. Instead, they chose to protect each other, rather than making unnecessary sacrifices. And what I loved the most—the communication between the male lead and female lead was so smooth. No prolonged misunderstandings, no unnecessary drama. It was refreshing.
That’s why I really love Lee Eunho (aka Prince Muyeong). He’s actually the perfect candidate for king—calm, wise, smart, and pretty skilled with a sword too. But, as Prince Eunsong said, "The throne has no heart." That’s why Eunho couldn’t be king—because he has one.
Bae Inhyuk’s acting in this role was top-tier. You could really feel the difference between Prince Muyeong and Lee Eunho, from the way he spoke, his tone of voice, and even his expressions. And Bae Inhyuk in Prince Muyeong mode? So cool and commanding.
What made it even better was how Eunho once told Deoksu that he never cried. Even when the palace was in chaos, even when he was in danger, he didn’t shed a tear. But when he found out Deoksu was in danger, he finally cried. That was heartbreaking.
Prince Muyeong was never suited for palace life. He was too kind and too unwilling to sacrifice others for the sake of power. That’s also why Prince Eunsong let him go so easily—because even Eunsong knew that Muyeong had always been sincere towards him and held strong integrity for the royal family. He would always get angry whenever random people badmouthed the palace.
This drama, despite its plot holes and some dragging moments, was still pretty worth watching. It was fun, and honestly, it helped me get over my saeguk trauma, lol. The comedy was on point, and the story was engaging—Yeongcheonru being copied into the palace was such a cool plot point. I really enjoyed watching it.

Perfect ending
It has been a while since the ending of a story appeared so satisfying. As the journey of people’s favorite interns concluded, Yongcheonru got a makeover- it reminded us that not every ending needs to be sad.It was difficult to witness Jun Hwa in a negative light. Ans witnessing his world crumbling down was more heart-wrenching. But the boy survived the wrath. With the passing of each episode, every character brings in a new depth and thought. Bang Ju lost himself and his life as he kept on choosing money. He betrayed Hong Man Sik who befriended him. He never even sided with his son once.
The prestigious inn witnessed treachery, betrayal and blood. But it survived the test of time. As Eun Ho decided to abandon his royal role, things started changing.
The story is a perfect amalgamation of love, thriller blended in the background of royalty. Hyun Woo did a brilliant job in weaving the tale in such a seamless manner. Not a single scene has been dragged out. And twists kept on playing in loop making the audience wonder what unexpected can happen in the next minute. It is a nice watch.

I loved the ending and their friendship!
I am really glad that they didn't make a bad ending or even a good ending where ppl just took their fathers place i love how all the bad ppl r gone and junhwa who I thought is a monster at the end became good and is okay with the idea of them dating them opening their own little inn and living happily tgt while still being the squad we know is the perfect ending I love it. I thought the Prince is gonna be king though but them having no responsibility after everything that happened is so nice and that the whole kingdom will live happily and I like how they still kept the thing where the customer is the king. at the start I really liked the show in the first like six eps and I thought the idea was unique and I was enjoying that she lived as a guy and how she was interacting with all the main leads and I hated the other guys who annoyed them but I thought that it was so funny how they were acting all mighty and better than them when they r bullying the Prince and the owner of the inn so I loved that but then from ep six to ten I think it got kinda boring I didn't enjoy it as much maybe cuz I got used to it and it was kinda slow but I understand cuz they were building up to the great six eps bro idk which ep but I think 12 or 13 was SO GOOOODDDD where everything was revealed and junhwa goes crazy and beats up that guy I just loved it so much the rollercoaster of emotions in those couple of eps was so crazy and I really liked junhwa so I was so mad when he became evil but everything that happened was so cool.Esta resenha foi útil para você?

Kim Ji Eun's male performance
It was a good series in general. I watched it without getting bored. However, there were many mistakes and parts that were covered with things beyond our logic. The story was structured in two ways. The first was about students doing an internship at an inn and the events that happened to them there. The second was about events related to a mystery. The facts and consequences behind this.I liked the mystery part. The school-like parts didn't really grab me. It seemed simple. It seemed childish. It seemed absurd. A lot of things came up thinking we would make fun of them. It didn't work. But the mystery part was very good. However, in the last episodes, the prince gathering the ministers and those who were interested in revealing the facts behind the events in front of the King, giving them a speech, inviting them to the right path, asking them to apologize, asking them to confess their crimes, exposing the King, including his father, and calling them traitors, in my opinion, was very absurd, even supernatural, beyond fantastic. It is impossible to imagine such a thing being structured, no king would allow it, he would kill him immediately. A father would not forgive his son, a son would not forgive his father. It was such an environment. There were similar incidents. These were glossed over, and they hurt the series' good progress. In the end, the series ended well. The actors were good. Even Kim Ji Eun, who appeared as a man from the beginning to the last episode, appeared as a woman in the last episode. We are so used to her as a man that it felt strange. I didn't like her as a woman. She suited her role to that extent. I especially liked Kim Eui Sung's image, who played the role of Cheon. The role he portrayed with this image was extraordinary. It was an award-winning performance. I congratulate the actor. The other actors were also good. I liked the cast.
