Miyako ga Kyoto ni Yattekita! (2021)

What a lovely lil' dorama! ^_____^

I hope you'll forgive me for quoting/paraphrasing what I had written in my review of "Hotarugusa", as it's befitting for this lovely "Miyako ga Kyoto ni Yattekita!" too! ^__^;
And that is: amidst the recent, ever-surging wave of "westernized" j-dramas (...), it does one's heart a whole lot of good to find a small gem like this!
The whole dorama is a heartfelt declaration of love for Kyoto, all while portraying the lovely story of the reunion between a divorced father and his 20 years old daughter, whom he hadn't seen in 12 years.
The script is wonderful, filled as it is with witty dialogues, touching scenes and a light-but-totally-not-shallow general atmosphere; the leads, Sasaki Kuranosuke and Fujino Ryoko, both delivered a great performance; the music is adorable, particularly that ubiquitous tango; last but certainly not least, Kyoto in all its glory is such a perfect setting and the short documentary clips, introduced by Fujino-san herself, shown at the end of each episode are just the cherry on top!
What else can I say? I literally enjoyed every single minute of it! Perfect 10! ^___^

Un Kyoto sans Maiko, ...

Mignon petit drama prenant comme prétexte les retrouvailles d'un père avec sa fille Miyako, jeune youtubeuse de 20 ans. Mais en réalité, le véritable héros de l'histoire est la ville millénaire de Kyoto. Ses maisons en bois, ses temples et sa rivière Kamogawa, que Miyako, à travers des scènettes montrant des séances de selfies dignes des années 2010, fait découvrir à son anglais de boyfriend et en anglais, s'il vous plait. Prétexte donc à donner des bons tuyaux de rues et impasses à visiter au spectateur international qui tomberait par hasard, mais alors vraiment par hasard, sur cette courte série de 6 épisodes de 20 min.

En effet, si le but est de séduire le touriste étranger (cette omniprésence de l'anglais), on peut être sceptique sur la démarche. L'ambiance surannée est bien là, mais le parti pris d'être le plus "Kyoto" possible avec des habitants à l'accent du Kansaï à couper au couteau et une vie quotidienne bloquée dans les années 50, peut dérouter le gaijin et semble plutôt fait pour faire remonter les souvenirs à la génération de l'ère Showa, majoritaire au Japon. La toilette, dans les bains publics, des maisons prêtent à prendre feu à la moindre étincelle, tellement proches et boisées qu'elles sont, des vieux kimonos qui dorment dans les tiroirs et valent une fortune et surtout un médecin, en la personne du père de Miyako qui se déplace de maison en maison à vélo pour voir ses patients tous très âgés, mais toujours en en pleine forme. Contraste exagéré avec la modernité de Miyako, élevée par sa mère dans la trop moderne Tokyo.

N'attendez pas de performances d'acting dans ce (docu-)drama empreint de simplicité. Sasaki Kuranosuke (53), le père de Miyako, véritable enfant du cru, est à sa place et fait peine à voir en papa qui se découvre, avec une Miyako bien trop grande pour faire sa crise d'adolescence. Comme des millions de jeunes dans le monde (et peut être encore plus au Japon), elle se rêve influenceuse et pour une fois le thème peu être intéressant puisqu'elle fait découvrir des artisans du coin. Bien sûr, avec aucun réalisme puisqu'elle envoie ses micro-reportages en anglais à un boyfriend qui doit débarquer à Kyoto d'un épisode à l'autre. Son jeu d'actrice est encore maladroit, mais à 21 ans, Fujino Ryoko est encore peu habituée à des premiers rôles et on préfèrera la fraîcheur des vrais reportages, bien plus réalistes, de fin d'épisode, où elle interview sans fard les gents du coin. Honnêtement j'attendais, sans trop me concentrer sur l'épisode, ces reportages où on apprend encore des choses, même si on croyait tout savoir sur Kyoto. C'est dire l'ennui que l'on peut trouver à suivre l'histoire assez banale et peu rythmée des retrouvailles de Miyako et son père.

Du bon et du mauvais dans ce drama donc. Comme les deux facettes du Japon, fasciné par l'occident (les Anglais, youtubes, ...) et leurs traditions (Kyoto , l'artisanat, ...). Je vous laisse évidemment choisir votre facette, mais moi, je ferai le même choix que Miyako ....

Beyond Expectations

I'm not really sure what this show was supposed to honestly be about (the history of Kyoto, coming of age story, dramatic relationship(s), family relations, new starts somewhere fresh) but this story really blew me out of the water! I've never been so infatuated with a set of characters; this story is absolutely in my top 15 of favorite shows!


I wasn't sure what I was expecting, or even looking for, and to be honest, I mostly wanted to watch a story with Sasaki Kuranosuke in it; I usually find new stories to watch or new actors/actresses to follow by following other actors/actresses that I already enjoy watching. And Sasaki Kuranosuke did not disappoint! This story is heartwarming and gut wrenching, very raw and relatable, unique and honest, respectful and absolutely beautiful. I saw a brand new Kyoto that I've never seen from other videos or guide books.


I really liked watching the connections between an "outsider" and the community form, it was interesting to watch the relationship between father and daughter grow as well. I think the story did a wonderful job of showing a new relationship between a father and daughter as adults quite well! It can be a challenging thing to see your child as an adult, and to treat them as such; but this story really did a fantastic job of showing how strong, hard, dedicated, fun, and respectful work can pay off in the end... in any type of relationship!


I think the ending was a bit of a cliffhanger, nothing too dramatic honestly, but it definitely left me wanting more of Miyano Miyako, Kakinoki Kukichi, and Kyoto! I liked hearing the Kyoto dialect, it was such a strong language yet had it's cute moments, too. I like that this story showed the viewer(s) the history of Kyoto in a fun, modern way while still staying true to their roots! I can't wait to see more!
