Revenge is Sweet but Karma is Sweeter -- Amazingly Done and Yay to a second season

There is nothing I didn't like about this drama. Taxi Driver, to some, may have been another revenge drama, but to me, it was one of those dramas that dared not only to undertake, but also address some mammoth issues that sometimes overwhelmed. From labor and mental health abuse to significant workplace harassment, pornography, organ trafficking, thrill killers, statute of limitations, and the biggest and hardest to reconcile the abuse of an almost lawless justice system, that was seemingly instituted to preserve the rights of the powerless victims, but somehow ends up shielding the lawless and the criminals. It's true when they say, the only thing more hideous than crime is repressive justice. So, it's no surprise that the issues above birthed and justified a service such as Deluxe Taxi that empowered the victims and punished the lawless as befitted their crimes. But as sweet as revenge can get, karma is sweeter, which the drama clearly articulates at its ending. And as Jung Sung Chul (Kim Eui Sung) says, revenge only begets more revenge.

The other thing Tax Driver unquestionably articulates is that if the criminal justice system intends to represent the victims and exact revenge by the law to dissuade people from self-help. It should then correctly do its job and not trivialize those it's supposed to protect. Just as people should be held accountable for their actions, so should the state, because there's a moral burden that comes from allowing heinous criminals and crimes not to be punished commensurate with their wickedness. I commend Kang Ha Na (Esom) and her Deputy Chief Prosecutor for recognizing that.

Taxi Driver's message is that revenge is never the answer, and neither is locking up criminals and throwing away the key. To achieve wide-ranging criminal justice reform, society and legislators need to overhaul how they think, dispense, and talk about social justice and crime. Because, as many experts have noted, how human beings describe each other either furthers their understanding and empathy or furthers othering and dehumanization. But what touched me most about Taxi Driver is the impactful and daring way it arrived at its final message. Everything from the system to the people who govern and are affected by it; are flawed humans, including our heroes. And that makes them more than capable of being the change they want to see.

As for the production -- well, a thousand and one kudos to the cast, the writer, the director, and production team of Taxi Drivers for a job beyond well done, but especially to Lee Je Hoon, this drama wouldn't have worked as well as it did without him. The same goes for Esom, Kim Eui Sung, Pyo Ye Jin; she was brilliant, and so was Cha Ji Yeon and the rest of the wonderfully talented cast. I will sorely miss this drama, but I look forward to seeing Lee Je Hoon in his next project -- Unframed and, if lucky, Taxi Driver 2. Highly recommended.

Are The Car Windows Tinted? AKA I Created an MDL Account Just to Review This

I just came from watching Signal, which for me was quite literally the greatest drama I've ever watched and if I could I would give it a 12/10. Having quite enjoyed Lee Je Hoon's acting in it and enjoyed the break from romantic themes, I searched for a drama that would hopefully produce similar results. I read through comments, choosing to disbelieve the nay-sayers because i OH-SO wanted to love this drama, but i cant, I just cant. Episode 14 is the episode that broke me.

What frustrates me so much about this series is the fact that the plot devices are SO inconsistent. Furthermore, the characters don't learn and make the same mistakes, they just aren't always caught by the plot unless it's convenient to the writer. Most of all, despite appearing so invincible and intelligent, they do things that make absolutely no sense. I want to give several examples below:

SPOILERS BELOW:
•Are the deluxe taxi's windows tinted? In every scene so far the deluxe taxi's windows were tinted pitch black. So dark that when all those news vehicles and helicopters were after it no one could see inside. So WHY OH WHY when it's convenient to the plot for the Prosecutor lady to drive by him at night to perfectly be able to look into the vehicle and see the male lead's face? It makes no sense.

•When the second female lead finally gets her hands on the cellphone of the perp who ruined her sister's life, she steps on it, crushing it. I'm just like DOES THE PHONE NOT HAVE A MEMORY CARD OR CLOUD BACKUP STORAGE? Like isn't this girl a hacker? Shouldn't she have confiscated the phone to delete the manual and cloud forms of the video as well instead of just stepping on it?! Like they literally blew up servers for that case but they couldn't do a tiny bit more due diligence? I got so upset.

•When our parallel universe batman male lead just came from saving an important character, he turned his back to the villain and got STABBED because of it. He's not wearing any protective gear despite getting stabbed several times before. THEN, RIGHT AFTER this event, he goes to save another important character (ep. 14), punches the bad guy (who is still perfectly conscious and able) and GETS STABBED AGAIN. I just want to know...IS IT SO HARD TO RESTRAIN THE BAD GUY BEFORE MOVING ON TO SAVING THE INNOCENT?

•Why are they always giving their names and identities/faces to the perps? If something goes wrong in the mission they have their identities and wont be able to know how the perps will demand retribution. Which leads me the stupidest part when Jang Sung Chul got stabbed by that other dude I was like "this man's family was murdered and he has NO home security systems?" also it didn't make sense that the guy who stabbed him didn't go for the kill, like why? There was nothing in that character's characterisation that would indicate he would spare him.

The show makes the male lead out the be this invincible character who solves all his problems by dropping bodies, but for a show with so many complexities this isn't SUPPOSED to always solve his problems and yet it conveniently always does. It's SO incredibly frustrating.

The other concern I have about this show is about the themes of revenge and philosophy of justice. It felt so lackadasical for Jang Sung Chul's character to think he had the answer to all of morality. The revenge schemes were also highly dissatisfying for me because they literally basically involved beating people up then throwing them in that makeshift prison. The reasons prisons exist is first and foremost to keep those who are harmful to society away from society. How are you going to trust a CRIMINAL to keep other CRIMINALS and think everything will be okay.

I just feel like the writer thinks this drama is smarter than it actually is, but there are SO many plot holes, philosophical holes, judicial holes, criminal holes, character-identity holes, conflict resolution holes they might as well have called this drama "HOLES."

What I Liked:
•The acting. The rag tag bunch of vigilantes had excellent chemistry together and really felt like they worked as a team. I thought they worked so well together that I actually feel invested in their relationship, despite the fact that I didn't love the story.
•The initial story--I liked the idea of a group of people coming together to support one another in a unique way which could have made for a more interesting story, but instead it just wasted a lot of potential on messiness.
•The PURSUIT of philosophy. I did NOT like at all Jang Sung Chul's moral condescending nature, but I did APPRECIATE his PURSUIT of morality and at least realising that even though the judicial system is flawed, he on his own cant be responsible for "reforming" criminals/ "fixing" them.

In any case I will probably still finish it. I might even try to watch the second season next year. But I most CERTAINLY wont be rewatching season 1.

4 stars 14.5 episodes in. Will update after finishing.

Should you watch it? YES!

This is a drama I was too hesitant to watch. Although I heard about all the buzz it was creating, and regardless of the love I have for Lee Jehoon, the violence aspect held me back from giving it a try. Finally, now that s2 is airing, my fomo urged me to binge s1 and god! I'm glad I did that.

The world is no binary, nothing's black and white, there's surely a gray area in between. And Taxi Driver picks up on the gray area in our justice system. This drama questions the difference between morality and legality. Being the pacifist I am, I was surprised when my conscience urged me to stand with Kim Dogi in all his actions. While we root for the rainbow gang, towards the end of the drama the holes in their organisation is also highlighted. The struggle faced by those who try to live within the constraints of law can also be witnessed through the prosecutor, Kang Hana. The drama tests our limits with all the remorseless criminals who escape lawful indictment through their economic, social and political privileges. It critiques some ignorant ideologies we have modelled over the years and urges us to rethink them.

Overall it's a fun watch and I would totally recommend!

Being a victim in the face of injustice is the worst – revenge promises release of suffering

Dealing with some actual crimes in South Korea, "Taxi Driver" retells them from the perspective of the victims - a variation of vigilante justice is the driving force and explosive in the plot development. A lot of action is guaranteed. The pace is high. There's nothing tear-jerking about. Romance has no place here. However there is room for emotions.

Although the crimes are extremely brutal and unscrupulous as well as the fights and chases don't sugarcoat anything - Taxis Driver is overall fun to watch (not in the sense of ´funny´ though!). On the one hand, this is because the perpetrators are caught and the victims actually get 'help'. On the other hand, and above all, it is the actors. Not only the team around Kim Do-gi, also and especially the individual villains in male and female versions. While on the one hand turbulent action fills the time (yes, for me personally less would have been more, but that's probably a matter of taste), it's actually the theatrical performance of the mimes that characterize the esprit of the series. The fact that Do-gi has to slip into new roles for his assignments has a certain charm - i.e. sometimes he mimes the inexperienced substitute teacher, sometimes the gallant, wide-legged criminal with a fur coat...

It's still quite a brutal TV serial. That's because of the cases. Yet they aren't invented. It helps that there is room for a pinch of humour, harmless situation comedy and a wink every now and then.

Despite all the vigilantism, which is the driving and fundamental premise of the entire series (and probably also of the 2nd season that is already planned), it is respectable: there is also a serious examination of justice/injustice, law/judiciary and the state's monopoly on the use of force. The brilliant public prosecutor Kang Ha-na in her idiosyncratic way and her team are excellently suited to this. The heroic deeds of the 'exemplary taxi crew' are thus not only whitewashed, but also rightly confronted. The script has in that sense hit a fine line that doesn't take away the joy of satisfaction, but still puts a question mark behind vigilantism, and thus gives credit to honest, committed and highly motivated law enforcement officers - because the country needs them. Vigilante justice, that should be clear, cannot and must not be the solution. (Human history is full of cultures of lynching and blood feuds - certainly this never did and will not promise a better world.)

And then: the heroes of the story are human beings, too. Flashbacks provide an insight into the taxi team's traumatic, formative past while tying them into current cases. They too are victims. On this earth there is probably hardly any person who does not have had the experience of being a victim in the course of their life - more or less traumatical. It is an ugly feeling, a deeply shameful experience, as it reminds mankind of its greatest weakness: the ultimate loss of control and helplessness inherent in the finitude of being, the inevitable surrender that sooner or later everyone awaits.

Accordingly, forgiveness and reconciliation are also a topic of this KDrama. However, this is ruled out as a serious option quite early on. A nice concept, yes, but rather not practicable, because people prefer to thirst for revenge. In this story, the emphasis is on the satisfaction of such. There are others, emphasizing that the pain doesn't go away with revenge. Because the fact remains: For a victim, the past cannot be reversed - in fact, the pain associated with it and the feelings surrounding it are rarely in the past anymore. They shape life from that moment on, become a part of it in the here and now. The experience cannot be erased or undone. In this respect, revenge on the perpetrator doent´t help either.

Taxi Driver gives less importance to this consideration. That's actually my only (but not insignificant) criticism. The series prefers to ride the obviously successful Speed&Action wave. Because otherwise that would have robbed the KDrama of the basis for the second season, so to speak. Consequently, they want to build on the success of the first. (Without Esom in the role of prosecutor Kang Ha-na, by the way, since she apparently left the actors´ crew due to other appointments.)

A complete entertainer

Taxidriver is that drama which kept me interested even from the first look posters. The story is really good,a bit allover the place in 10 and 11 generally justifies its tag as a revenge drama. It is not a lovey dovey ordinary drama of kworld. It plunges into the real problems of korean society.it tackles some serious issues like bullying, forced labour, phishing etc. Each episode is a rollercoaster ride and my personal favorite were the first two stories .I really like lee jaehoon (before this drama I only watched him in hot stove league, now I watched almost all his dramas). He is an amazing actor, the way he portrayed different characters which are entirely different from Do ki is highly appreciated. I was familiar with both first and second female leads.ye jin a good job in potraying Go eun and her different emotions. We didn't feel that she was casted at the last moment as she fit in so perfectly. During first half of drama it is really hard to find out who was the first female lead. I had high Hope's with esom as she is a wonderful actress but the writers doesn't even used 1%of her talent .Her character doesn't have any development until episode 9 and they should have used her potential way before then but i am satisfied at least they gave her some development They should have used such an amazing actress in so many ways more than being a moral compass and they killed mr wang to make her shine(sigh). The gangster lady sung mi is really shady, dark and she did a great job as I hated that character.I didn't like how they gave mr.jang a wig to show him 20yrs younger.its a big no and meh ,that's my only complaint about the otherwise perfect drama. The action scenes were fairly good but in a rooftop fight scene you can almost identify the stuntman.I liked the other two members as they provided some comic relief. The drama falls into revenge thriller category so it is better off without romance. I liked the pace of the story and music is really really good. The 80s music will get to all pumped. The writers did a good job with rainbow taxi members as all of them had a chance to shine even though Do ki shined brightly (obviously he is the lead).some scenes were deeply disturbing but they were essential to maintain the intensity of the drama.I didn't read the manga so I don't know how the series turned out in comparison with it.But this one is one of the good dramas aired this year.If you want a drama without unbelievable and illogicalplot twist and good acting and writing this drama won't disappoint you.Taxidriver is an absolute must watch if you are a fan of fast paced revenge dramas,if looking for fluffy romance and easy going story line this is not for you. This drama is one of the best revenge action thriller dramas so far.Taxidriver may scored a perfect ten from me if it continued it's amazing run like first half but the second half felt a little draggy and all over the place and something's didn't make sense at least for me. In conclusion this is not a flawless drama it has it's own flaws ,with a fantastic first half and above average second half ,taxidriver turned out to be a overall good entertainer of 2021.
P.s rewatch value is low as its revenge thriller i will not rewatch it as its charm is lost one's you find out the plot.

incroyable drama d'action!

Surement pareil.

Jang Sung Chul me semblait louche.

Promising premise, badly executed

I was excited when this show came on my radar a few days ago. A storyline with an antihero who drives a taxi and metes out revenge/justice on those the legal system does a half-assed job at penalizing — let's do this. Additionally, I really enjoy watching Lee Je Hoon, having seen Signal and very recently, Move to Heaven.

The first few episodes were alright in the way that some shows try to find their footing with a unique premise. I don't know what it is, but this one is lacking in something. It was a mess, cliched, dragged on too much at times, and I didn't care much for the characters. Lee Je Hoon's antihero character could've been examined a little more, like showing a different, intimate side to him, but this was all about him beating the bad guys up.

Maybe the behind-the-scenes problems contributed to this, like the original actress who played the hacker having been replaced due to bullying allegations and reshoots being done, or the scriptwriter being replaced midway because of disagreements with the director. Who knows?

This show missed an opportunity to be something original, brilliant, and thought-provoking in terms of justice and its relationship to the law. It was more of one brooding figure taking on a gang of black suits everywhere he went. Really tiresome.

I stopped paying attention by episode 12-13 and couldn't be bothered to see the last few episodes because there was just no thrill and at that point you're no longer waiting for anything to happen. Disappointing, but maybe Season 2 will be better?

Waste of 16 hours

The writing is awful. Female lead annoying. Bad plot. Icb some people think it's "the thriller drama of the year" when beyond evil and so many better thriller dramas happened. Say yikes
It’s really not worth the time. I m fond of the actors but this was really disappointing
Another thing is, the action scenes were cringe. Many one dimen sional characters too. Main cast plays as archetypes anf ghey dont always have real depths. Some aspects were good but that excitement gets tiring and you just end up watching bored after a while

THE REVENGE DRAMA WE BADLY NEED. A MUST WATCH!

This is not your typical revenge-themed drama. I really liked how they introduced the characters in the first episode then their works in the next ones. This drama tackles social issues that are relevant to us today. The revenge concept is really unique and the prosecutors balance what the taxi company does. The actors are all good especially Lee Je-hoon. He nailed every "role" so far and I fell more for him. He also did the action scenes himself (talk about dedication and talent <3). The plot and the series itself gets more and more interesting. I hope more people would recognize this gem.

It's still ongoing but I made this review for those who are still unsure whether they should start watching Taxi Driver or not. The answer is: WATCH THIS KDRAMA NOW!!

I enjoyed this drama a lot, all of the cases were amazingly written (I know some are based on true events), it makes me mad and and upset, especially in the way that sometimes even the law couldn't bring justice. The last case, the hidden track 3 damn it makes me cry like crazyyy ughh it breaks my heart so muchh, i mean if law couldn't help these victims and the innocence, who will!! well, at least in this drama, we got rainbow taxi. anyways, great drama, with super amazing acting and action scenes. the squad thingy I love it but I do kinda wish moree of that family vibes feeling. The storylines were great but somewhere in the middle towards the end it has some plot holes and that ending of some cases weren't as satisfying (??) like I kinda wish more. There are parts that feel sloww and draggy prolly because they tryna make this drama more on dark side, but I think it's unnecessary cause I couldn't stand those slowness. All in all, enjoyed and love itt, it is not just a typical revenge drama, the whole message they trying to portray is amazing but there are parts that could have been better.

I guess this ain't for me after all..

I guess it not really for me.

The plot was really interesting at first, unique. They were getting justice for those people that was denied of it. I like it a lot. Even the cast were great.. The fights scenes were good too. Some says, there's too much violence with in this show. Me, I don't mind it. As long as it's necessary for the story.

But then it went downhill from there really fast. It was as if the same thing kept happening on and on, all throughout the whole story. 16 episodes, 1 hour each is too long to watch almost the same thing over and over again.

I also wish a little bit more heart, something maybe a bit sweet just to cleanse the palate. The only reason I kept on watching is only because I was hoping it would get better, it didn't..

Refreshing Idea, but needs more focus on characters.

There were quite many things to love about Taxi Driver, and I hate that I couldn't agree on giving a higher rating, but the things I did love include:
- The idea of getting revenge through a Taxi was a very refreshing idea and the comfort the victims felt when the main character, Doki listens to their stories warmed my heart a lot.

- The main character, Doki was also very complex, and not to even mention the actor's portrayal of this character's weaknesses, strengths, actions, and even reasonings was really good.

- The awareness each of their cases raised, watching the victims tell their struggles was very heartbreaking but the fact that these cases actually occur in real life allowed us as viewers to see why we should try as possible to be better or more supportive of victims who go through horrifying things as such.

- The villain, Beak Sun Mi, was a very complex character who knew what she wanted and was smart enough to get her hands on it.

- Both of the FLs. One of them was Go Eun, Go Eun had a bad backstory that made her physically and emotionally unstable, yet despite this, she was able to get herself up and fight for what she desired, demonstrating her strength. I absolutely loved that.

On the other hand, despite the fact that she was despised by the majority of viewers, I adored Hana's character because she had such an independent demeanor and a stubborn intellect that made me fall in love with her right away. And she was just despised by the majority of spectators since she held a different belief than the Blue Bird Team.

Things I disliked:
- The founder of the Blue Bird team, Jang Sung Chul had very little intricacy or steady composition. Yes, he was brilliant enough to form the team, but given that all he did was get angry, he seemed to me to be a self-pitying, anger-driven man who wasn't even smart. For example, when Beak Sun Mi was exposed to be the villain as the series progressed, I was unhappy that he hadn't seen it coming. It didn't make sense; he was working with a lady who could murder him with the flick of a finger, and he had no leverage to defend himself and his crew. His supposed personality traits of being intelligent and intimidating had nothing to do with 90% of the things his character performed.

- Stripping Go Eun of the follow-up of her backstory. I enjoyed Go Eun's character and was surprised to see that she had a background, but I'm pleased she did. Unfortunately, almost nothing happened with her after her backstory episodes; I mean, she's one of the main characters, so a backstory should've been inevitable; it was almost as if they'd forgotten about her.

- Hana's wasted potential. As much as I like her character's steadiness and independence, I despised how long it took the scriptwriter to put her on the team. Her joining the team was something I expected to happen even before the drama aired, but they took much too long to do so. Hana was a clever person who understood her way around the law, therefore I believe she could have protected the team better even if the law didn't punish the offenders harshly enough. They could've also given her character a more interesting backstory.

I recommend this but if you're like me you'll have difficulties wrapping your head around the unsteady development of some of the characters.
