A mixed bag

This was a rewatch for me as it was one of the last BL series I watched before life taking over for a few years (plus). It was just as problematic the second time around, and I hate myself for enjoying parts of it, but I did. I'm partial to the main actors, as I think a lot of BL lovers are, and so sometimes I overlook the glaring issues.

That being said, despite years between watches, when we got to the exes returning to meddle start of the storyline and then the additional blackmail hot mess express that followed, I remembered a large part of why I was so irritated with the series It felt like a lot of unnecessary drama -- literally just thrown in to draw out episodes. I think that time and energy would've been better spent dealing with Type's not-so-internalized homophobia and maybe starting to better understand and love himself as well as others, but no one asked me so extra drama it was. They also didn't actually deal with the storyline they presented at all. There was no legal involvement for anyone, and the emotional damage of everything and the gravity of the situation was totally glossed over. Hence, again, it was just thrown in to make the plot more dramatic IMHO and without actual forethought or appropriate care.

Techno will probably forever me one of my favorite side characters, though. His facial expressions never ceased to make me laugh and he played the typical side BFF to a T.

Unexpectedly Good

I went into Tharntype with low expectations. I based those on the word of mouth I have seen online. There are problems with this series. The whole subplot of Tar and his rape is not handled in the best way. Moreover, the person who orchestrated the assault of a 10th grader (or possibly a 9th grader, given the timeline) is not punished and is made to look sort of sympathetic in a few scenes. I am including the special episode when I talk about this series.

The chemistry between the actors Mew and Gulf is incredibly good. However, even at the start there are issues with the characters. A gay character falling head over heels for a homophobe is a little hard to believe or take seriously, but you go with it. How the show handles Type's childhood trauma of sexual abuse and related issues is better than I expected. I sort of wish this was used to help examine some of Type's homophobia or even some terrible homophobic stereotypes around homosexuality and child abuse. But the series pulls back from that, in part because Type is not exactly the most self-reflective of characters.

The other subplot with Tar and his step-brother Tum is also in Love by Chance, but it just feels weird and it goes nowhere.

The relationship between Tharn and Type eventually becomes rather cute. I also really like the gradualness in how it works. It goes from enemies, to a one night stand, to fuck buddies, to a situationship, to finally being together. Each step was a natural outgrowth of the previous one. There are still deeply problematic elements to their coupling, but I leave that to the fact the characters are 18/19 years old. Honestly for a lot of people there are some toxic elements when in relationships at that age you eventually out grow, but it takes some time.

Another strength of this show is Type's growth as a human being. He goes from being very narrow minded and an extreme hot head to still being hot-headed but a more mature, caring, and thoughtful individual. Type grew because of his love for Tharn. Tharn doesn't really change much throughout the series. We get to meet Tharn's family a handful of times and they are really cute.

A favorite character of mine was Techno (aka No). He was magnificent comedic relief throughout this season. Much funnier than in Love by Chance.

Major weaknesses of the show? Well, there are characters who stop being relevant halfway through. There are some subplots that feel irrelevant or just drop entirely. The way this show treats consent is also quite the red flag in of itself. The villain doesn't really got portrayed in the way they should have. How this aligns with Love by Chance is also quite a head stratcher in terms of making timelines work, because they do not.

retyping this review

i watched this bl drama at a very young age and the only reason why i didn’t notice anything bad happening is because it was two men kissing in front of my eyes. on youtube. in all honesty i didn’t know how bad this show was until i heard all about it on social media. so i’m going to be putting my opinions on this show about how it’s good and bad.

type’s personality: traumatic past…i get it…i really do but to be a dickhead to everyone you meet?? there’s being a jerk to having human decency. i get it caused him to not trust others but he has guy friends for christ sake so why can’t he talk to other guys about simple things? you had to have made friends somehow. for example: when he tried switching rooms with a couple people on his floor they refused because of type’s responses or resting bitch face. and he goes around questioning why people treat him that way when he’s a complete douche to most. i understand that’s why he’s homophobic, 100%. the plot was good for him because you had a gay roommate and a homophobic roommate with that. i didn’t like how type made the decision to give himself to tharn so that he didn’t have to owe him anything even though they only repaid each other with snacks. like take tharn out for a meal or something and if you had sex then i would have been a bit more relaxed. to give yourself away when there are so many other options is just crazy.

tharn and type’s relationship: don’t get me wrong these two actors have amazing chemistry and know how to get it on to cause an uproar. i liked the scene where they were watching porn on tharn’s computer for it to end up being straight porn and type was so confused like “i thought you were gay” which really made me laugh. in all honesty i would have stayed being roommates with a homophobic guy just so i could show him idc if he doesn’t like me. it’s basically anyone that i know would do if they were gay and dealing with someone who was homophobic. but did tharn really have to touch type while he wasn’t conscious?? i cant believe they put that in the series especially so early on. it would make sense if they put it deeper into the show when the bond between the two characters was more than just bickering. it wouldn’t have been molestation but a bit of teasing yk? that’s if if type wasn’t having a nightmare at that time too.

llong: wtf is wrong with this guy?? i thought we had a good friend on our hands but instead he turned out to be a crazy freak in the end. he got me at the start thinking he was a supportive friend of tharn’s who’s always been there whenever tharn was sad or happy. i really didn’t think llong liked tharn in any way but i was also confused why llong didn’t have much of a background stort and little snippets of his life just to keep thr audience from guessing he was the bad guy. but what made him really crazy is when he sent guys to rape tharn’s ex. that really shock me into thinking he was a complete psycho. i just wish there was more about him in the second season because they acted as if he never existed when he was the biggest dent in their lives. doesn’t make much sense.

tar’s story: damn, this kid has been through a lot. being sent to a hotel by llong expecting to be met with tharn but instead it was a bunch of guys who raped him. i feel for this kid and the fact he has such a baby look to him that i really set me off. i felt deeply for this kid until i found out his brother had a major crush on him. there wasn’t any clarification that if the two got together or tar rejected his brother. the scene where tar’s brother met with tharn and basically confessed his feelings about his brother should have made tharn jump into action because well…incest???? i also wished there was more about them in the second season because we are left guessing what happened to them and if tar was better than from before because tae had a lot of trouble expressing how he felt and was locked inside his head.

techno: I FREAKING LOVE THIS MAN! funny as hell character and was really the comedy relief that kept me watching. i always like the guys who are funny and clumsy but also friends with the main lead because they just have more to them. he was a supportive friend as well but didn’t have any relationships outside of his friendships but ended up dated a MAN in the second season. and boy was that a surprise to me.

tharn’s ex sun: tharn was a receiver??? and that was his wake up call to give and not receive??? i mean you get man nothing wrong with learning who you are but i couldn’t imagine younger tharn being the one to receive. i really thought sun liked tharn’s brother, thorn but no…thorn got married to a woman in the second season but sun was still stuck around.

after finally realizing what really happened in this series it wouldn’t stop me from watching it for the fifth time already. the cast was amazing and the chemistry with it all out the cherry on the cake. there were a lot of funny and hottttt moments so overall i would and wouldn’t recommend this being the first bl you’ll watch or last.

The chemistry is just wow ???

I love it 🥰. This I what good actors, chemistry and editing can give you. There were a lot of things that I felt were not exactly right with this show however all those things were not deal breakers for me due to the way the good acting and chemistry.

I WILL BREAK DOWN WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE
-I still till now don’t know why Tharn liked Type.
-Types Trauma was not really dealt with and it felt a bit jarring from him disclosing he was sexually abused to him asking for anal sex as we are not clear on the time line outside of the fact they had been living together for a semester.
-the fact that we did not get any justice regarding Tar. sexual violence is very real and it helps to really explore and also get some closure around this. I don’t think that this should have been fluffed out but actually explore both sides for the victim and the perpetrator.
-Thorn relationship with san, I don’t get how he could have been okay with his friend sleeping with his brother at such a young age.
WHAT I LIKED
- Type and Tharns chemistry was off the charts
-The steamy sex scenes were refreshing they gave enough to let my imagination run riot.
-The friendships that Type had were endearing… he was a loveable grumpy person
-Type’s eyes are so expressive i loved this as they showed all the emotion, his body language was great too.
-Tharn’s Family and Types as were quite realistic on showing both sides of what you can get when coming out.
-TYPES character development.
Good OST

DESPITE the issues i loved this drama and have rewatched it mainly because Tharn and Types relationship was shot so beautifully. Type’s character development can be seen in how he is in the relationship but I was so happy that he remained the sarcastic, blunt and rude type who is really a softy. I WOULD RECOMMEND

Type è francamente un po' eccessivo e violento nelle sue manifestazioni e passa troppo in fretta dall'odio all'amore.

My All-Time Favorite BL … In Spite of Its 'Issues'

I cannot believe I am just getting around to writing this review.

Simply put, this BL is my all-time favorite. I loved the couple and their initially acerbic relationship. What stands out most for me is the brilliant job the actors did of giving me an utterly convincing performance that they were really into each other. And the affection… My goodness they were affectionate. I truly wish other BL series and actors would follow the example of Tharntype.

And yes! I get it. There were some parts of this series where I went WTF!!! But the reality is that Type was a 'damaged' human and it took Tharn's slight aggressiveness and 'persistence' to deal with it and keep 'plowing' forward. Not all relationships are perfect and for the most part, none are a bed of roses. Tharntype deals with the reality of making the best out of a not great situation and actually coming out on top.

As for rewatching scenes, there are several that I watch over and over again. Small spoiler here… Type pretends to sleep and Tharn comes out of the bathroom and does one of the most beautiful and loving, romantic things I have ever seen portrayed in any romantic series (both hetero and BL) causing Type to realize, to his dismay, that he is actually falling in love with Tharn.

At this point, I really have to make special mention of Type's friend Techno played by Mild Jinna Pichit-o-Pakun (https://mydramalist.com/people/9103-uengtrakul-suttinut). What a wonderful character and what a wonderful job Mild Jinna Pichit-o-Pakun did of rendering him. Viewers can't help but love Techno… at times too frank, hilarious and doing all the right things a truly supportive friend should do. The face full of water that Techno gets for asking a simple question is hysterical.

To the the producer of this series—Tee Bundit Sintanaparadee… I say "I love your work! Thank you for Tharntype and Lovely Writer". Two of my top 10 favorite BL series.

I wish all my fingers were thumbs so that I could give this series 10 thumbs up. This is my all time favorite.

I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START FROM

For me, the Tharntype was both good and terrible. Good because of the good direction and acting, and terrible because of its storyline. What hurts me the most is that this story had picked up pretty good themes and elements such as PTSD, sexual abuse, obsessing over your first love, and such but the way they had portrayed these elements had just amplified the toxicity. I heard the original story is more explicit in the sense that they sexualized rape which I believe they shouldn't. I have issues with rape scenes in a series or book unless it serves their purpose in building up a story. The way they handled PTSD in the series was triggering in so many senses.

I would say the acting and the chemistry between the two leads are good, this had so much potential of being a good series but then it can't be helped because the actual story sucked. The only reason why I am rating this series 7 is only because of the acting and directing.

Could have been better

This series is very dear to my heart. I rewatched it 3 times (and I extremely rarely rewatched series). I loved it, Mew and Gulf played great for the time but now, when I watch edits on the series, it badly ages. The storyline was clumsy ; Type being homophobic and a football player, and his gay musician roomate, Tharn. The two of them happen to live in the same room and when Type finds out that Tharn is gay, he is asking him to move out and insult him by every names. (TIME JUMP) Later on when they get together, Type is still homophobic and bad-mouthed, and pathetically excuse his behaviour by saying "but you know I am not talking about you", Tharn has to keep on with his boyfie's annoying attitude. This relationship is so toxic. Type leads Tharn by the nose, and you can clearly see Tharn isn't happy in their realtionship, he is always jealous bc his sweety is unpredictable, and he has so justify his wrong doings over and over. He is tired but he love him. Type is the hugest walking red flag I've seen.
Let's now talk about the NC scenes. Mew is really talented for those (if you watched or know a little bit What The Duck! then you know what I'm talking about) and the series even won an award for the best kiss, the iconic ice kiss. I really enjoyed them, I was giggleling, screaming, crying, jumping or stoicaly watched the kisses or the spicier scenes.
One thing I really really didn't like is Gulf acting. His acting was poor but God bless Mew saved their chemistry and the ambiance of the series. I'm quite sure if they took an other actor to play Tharn, the series would have been burried in the universe of BL.
I think I wrote a lot, and I prolly didn't say all I wanted to say.
It was Kachoii, byyyye !!

Tharntype is the best thai BL drama I have watched

Basically I am writing this review because I absolutely loved the whole series but still found mostly negative reviews about it which this drama does not deserve . Everybody is emphasizing on the fact that it is toxic because of type's behavior towards Tharn but to be honest I don't think that it is very toxic because he said it himself that he has anger issues and doesn't realize what he is saying especially towards Tharn which is partially also because of his trauma and even if it does not excuse his behavior , is it really important that all the characters have to be the sweet kind and the perfect , well behaved kind except the villain ,I don't think so, rude people do exist and also he really did changed a lot towards the end witch indicates some good character development . As for Tharn he really is the sweetest and the most kind seme I have ever seen and as far as the Consent issue is concerned I don't see any problem with it because yes he should have taken his consent before kissing but it was just a small peck and it could also be seen as a punishment for how type has treated him without any reason.

let me tell you the acting of all the characters was very good , each character was very clear. There was no tension or a feeling of discomfort between the couple and it felt real .

This series is worth to watch and I personally enjoyed it a lot. I am not saying that what other people say is wrong, of course its their opinion but I just couldn't stop myself seeing so many negative comments on such a good show .

It's good enough

Okay so I'm just gonna straight up say... I kinda disliked Type. I understood that that was his character and I guess Gulf did a pretty good job cause I even hate his character now but anyway, Type was sometimes unreasonable and I lowkey felt sorry for Tharn because Type didn't even let him explain. Also, it was understandable he hated gay men but it was stupid that he hated EVERY GAY MEN cuz not every gay men were like that. To be honest, if it wasn't for the kiss and sensual scenes, I would've given this a lower review but I did like how the actors did.

Also, the ost is literally beautiful and it's really catchy, I just liked the main ost of it so I didn't give it a full 10. The story was pretty simple but it didn't rlly matter to me so much, I liked the development of the main couple and how Tharn is so soft for Type but he was pretty pitiful whenever Type bursted at him. Ngl, I would watch this again, it isn't that bad, I just think Type it too dramatic but the love and chemistry between them was beautiful and it was nice to see Type smile every once in a while.

Overall, this was a good BL. It depends on you if you like it or not, but for me, it was good enough and I believe the conflicts and obstacles they went through definitely made their love for each other even grow much stronger than before ^^
