Novoland: The Castle in the Sky Episode 8

2.The scene changes to Yu who is now a prisoner, and it seems his job is to work on this super weapon (out of all the people...she put the subordinate of her enemy in here? that's like handing the enemy your plans!)
3.Change Scene: Ling'er tearfully searches for Tianyi and finds him, passed out...
4.Tianjun pleads for his mother to let him abdicate because he has no desire for war or to unite the people of Lan. The Queen mother is clearly mad but says if he can escape the city, she will give him what he wants (lies; she is going to set it up so he has no choice to do this. I kind of think she will cause injury to her self to achieve this end...that or his jealousy of Tianyi will bring him back)
5.Meanwhile, Ling'er is trying to get herself and a very injured Tianyi to some shelter (more snow). This ends with her collapsing beneath his weight and him mumbling that he must be dead...
6.Yu instigates a fight that leads to his lock up...but oh he has smuggled out some items...perhaps to escape...?
7.So this scene is pretty brutal: Tianjun, in order to leave, must undergo this Moon punishment. It will cause him to hallucinate and experience his every worse nightmare, from Ling'er abandoning him for Tianyi to betraying his mentor, Jishu...his mother is visibly upset and begs him to quit (he doesn't get many steps but the suffering is prolonged). He manages to leave, he is now a commoner, and the only one with him is that servant girl who is in love with him...
8.(Now this show gets good!) Tianyi and Ling'er sit by a fire. He seems better injury wise. I would say emotion wise he looks icy cold, in contrast to Ling'er who is sobbing over her new situation. And based on what she knows, it is pretty crappy. Her father is dead, her best friend killed him. Tianyi shares that the plan was for him to work with Tianjun to help her and her father escape, however not only did Tianjun not show up, he killed her father--Tianyi admits he has no idea if there is a deeper reason behind this. Now they need to figure out where to go. Ling'er assumes he will go to the South City, since his people hold it, and assumed he would go because this is the road there.
9.A subordinate of Tianyi appears and he shares they notified the King Shinzeng (?) at South City and then he is killed by flying wingpeople, who seem to want to kill the emperor (so a power struggle back home?) but his guard shows up and takes down these flying people (these are not his buddies)
10.Tiangyi gives her a dagger before following them to Qiyang palace. The man in charge of this guard seems like a prick. He tells Tianyi that if they keep the 'chosen humankind crown princess here' it will cause problems. Tianyi orders him to put her somewhere safe...
11.We finally get a glimpse of the wingkind city. It seems to be much more technologically advanced, with them using flying aircrafts. Looks like something out of a RPG.
12.Change Scene to Tianjun who is trying to remove whatever Jishu put in him to make him suffer for loving Ling'er. Not sure if he succeeded. But that other girl clearly wants to be the only one in his heart, asking if she could call him 'Brother Tianjun' (that is what Ling'er called him..)
13.Meanwhile, Tianyi witnesses the assassins cruelly excited (I guess having your wings cut off is an awful way to go). Another girl stops her from running out and explains that the man in charge of the executions is the same person who ordered the assassination. he is Tianyi's uncle, and the regent, until Tianyi comes of age (he also seems a trifle sadistic). She introduces herself as a palace maid, Xio Xue.
14.This Xio Xue is a bit..odd she checks out Tianyi when she gets ready for her bath and praises her body (? bc women do this all the time?) and then proceeds to ask questions about her relationship with the emperor, even suggesting she likes him but she denies it...
*this episode was interesting because we get to learn more about wingkind*

2.Tiangjun collects 'stealth weapons' from the unconscious bodies of guards of the star court. He quickly tracks down the guy who owned them: Yi Fuling (a wingguy) who admits that Tianyi ordered him to do it. but in front of the elders, he takes the blame. Ling'er (rightly) assumes that Tianyi put him up for it.
3.Ling'er (stupidly) chooses to intervene and take the blame. She 'can't let anyone suffer on her behalf' (please, please let her grow up a little she doesn't do cute very well...) Now she will be flogged, and I imagine this will make Tianjun feel bad since he is tasked with protecting her. It will likely make Tianyi feel bad since his target all along was Tianjun. It will def. make Yi Fuling feel bad since he not only shot the weapons, but he was seeking to use this as an opportunity to gain entry to the elite club. And Ling'er won't be feeling very good. So I see her thinking she did something good but at the end of the day she hurts so many people. Self-righteous behavior....*sigh* she should have apologized only for what she did, not for others. She's automatically (and correctly) picked the mastermind but it doesn't erase the culpability of others who willingly chose to involve themselves. (My rant ends here)
4.There is a heated confrontation between Tiangjun and Tianyi, while Ling'er watches. (I can't imagine all the stuff Tiangjun does to protect her and she has no idea...). Everyone now thinks that Ling'er and Tianyi had a romantic encounter, making Tiangjun a bastion of jealousy...
5.Interesting turn of events...Tianyi has to administer the lashes...with his extremely strong weapon...leaving Ling'er all injured. perhaps they aren't going to wind up together.
6.Ling'er is imprisoned because she has more punishments to endure. Tiangjun decides to break her out with his posse (wearing masks? really bad masks?) however his own guy turns traitor and tips off Tianyi. While this is all happening, Fuling has already busted in, feeling guilty. No one succeeds in breaking her out (I do feel bad for her this seems a bit over the top) and Tianyi walks out having set them all up but he still gets punished for breaking into the prison after hours.
7.In the next scene Tiangjung, Fuling, and Tianyi are all tied up. They get to talking and we learn that there was an Elder in the court by the name of Jishu who disappeared and had some special tools that were banned (me thinks this is Ling'er's papa). This topic arises because Elder Jishu is believed to be the one who constructed the prison, therefore, the only one who can break her out (also, every time they struggle their bonds are tighter...Tianyi keeps doing this on purpose...) anyways Tianyi is utterly unwilling to accept responsibility
8.I don't like her character she is too black and white in her thinking. I hope she grows a little. Anyways, she got herself into this situation. She came to a forbidden place. She shouldn't be shocked she was captured....
9.Tianyi cleverly makes use of Tinjun's feelings for Ling'er to continue to manipulate the situation to his advantage. Also, he is the only one thinking with his head--he reminds Tinjun that his actions have given Ling'er to undergo a trial with a slim chance of survival or receive 49 slashes which will kill her...
10.Tianyi watches Ling'er while she sleeps (odd...maybe these two are supposed to hook up) he is curious to know why Tingjun has fallen for a 'stinky girl like her' (he must be extremely immature when it comes to feelings--who talks like that?). he is trying to figure out what makes her so special that this guy whom he has known for so long would suddenly break all the rules and openly defy teachers to protect a girl with no background or significance (good points)(you need to know your enemies and clearly he did not know him)
11.Tianyi informs her that Tiangjun is threatening to raise his army against the star court--actions that count as revolt and would lead to a harsh punishment like beheading. This persuades her to take the trial
12.Tianyi really knows how to read Tiangjun. As Ling'er is about to leave, he gives her a 'gift' and proceeds to make out with her. Enraging Tiangjun. Tianyi storms off after Tianjun injures him, and the episode ends her with facing an automatom kind of weapon...
____
The most interesting character in the show is Tianyi. I love romance but I don't like watching a show where there doesn't seem to be a lot of answers for those feelings. We are told that Tianjun and Ling'er have a close relationship, and other than two brief flashbacks, we have no real reason to know why he loves her, or why she is close to him. The writers rely on the 'childhood friends' but there is not a lot of depth to this relationship so we don't feel invested. I would say it is better to wait and build towards that. Currently, I think Tianyi is going to be her main love interest because you can build that up and her quick conclusions about his personality will probably be changed. I shall continue to watch. Having just watched the spectacular eternal love I do think that I am judging this show a bit harshly.

'The God of Shooting Stars': Descends upon earth once every century. Her birth is easy to spot because shooting stars will fall, and she has a grey birth mark behind her ear.
Star Court/Master of Star Court Xing Ching: Seems to be a mediator between the two Lan Clans
Yinchi: A teacher at star court
Rui Zhu: A country girl who comes under attack literally as she is giving birth. Can shoot needles at pressure points (or it could be poison). mother of the goddess
Blue Eyed Man: Someone the Queen is in love with. He married Rui Zhu because he was too low of a status to marry the Queen. Is a student of the Star Master. Father of the goddess.
Humankind Maiden, Fu Ling/Ling'er: the little girl, all grown up, unaware of her identity
Chishu: Ling'er's butterfly companion
Bai Ting'Jun : Prince of human kind (no wings); seems to be the proper kind of guy who follows the rules and is thoughtful and is described as being 'kind and not overbearing' (I bet he is hiding a darker personality)(come on Ling'er refers to him as 'Brother' second male lead!)
Feng Tianyi: Emperor of the wingkind (which would make him the son of the princess from the beginning...): seems like an aggressive guy with high emotions (and extremely pretty eyes) and more pushy--
1.The show opens up with a brief prologue explaining that the two clans on Lan, a continent, have a long history of war. One clan can fly, given them certain advantages, the other cannot. Finally, they agree to a weak treaty to not attack one another.
2.The next scene opens to a pretty woman in the throws a very painful birth. Outside a man with blue eyes nervously waits. In the distance soldiers race towards them. It seems the man with blue eyes has been expecting this: he pulls a few things and a series of arrows hit these soldiers, but it isn't enough to stop a woman clad in white. She is even more pretty than the woman giving birth, and she is a princess seeking the girl child that has just been born.
3.Incidentally we learn that there is some kind of unsaid history between the princess and man. She seems to be in pain (perhaps she has feelings for him?).
4.The man tries to escape with his wife and child. His wife shoots needles (these could be poison needles or needles sealing pressure points, I don't know). They are stopped by a cliff, and here we learn that the man and princess have a history, that he married the country girl because he had no hope of a future with the princess (or so says the country miss)
5.The princess laughs and points out how happy he is, even having a child. Soldiers attack, and the country miss is killed. The man appears to be heartbroken before grabbing the infant and leaping, it seems, to their death. But the woman doesn't think they are dead. She wants them alive, and sends soldiers to find them.
6.The man visits the Star Pavilion and begs his master, the Star Lord, to help him but his master refuses, maintains that his role is that of mediator, and to not become entangled in the conflicts of the two Lan clans (he also gives us a little history lesson on the star goddess)
7.Man with blue eyes begs for a piece of Shura Cinabar--it will altar his appearance. It seems he will go into hiding....
[18 YEARS LATER]
8.Humankind Maiden Fu Ling is sent a message by TingJun (butterfly messenger) who does not give her the red bean she wanted but instead a dagger, and apologizes he wont be there for her birthday...Ling'er is irritated because the red bean symbolizes longing, and seems to represent her feelings for him (?)
9.Change scene: the star court. Xing Ching is ready to officiate a tournament held annually, the 7 Lantern Ceremony that is between the Wingkind and Humankind. Whoever wins gets to light the lamp. TingJun is here, as the prince of human kind (does Ling'er know?)
10. Feng Tianyi (he has to be the male lead--he arrives late and strides in and I can see him as a perfect foil/ I already call out Tingjun as being the second male lead). he essentially throws in the towel as if to say that the ceremony symbolizes peace and so isn't worth fighting over, just let Ting'Jun light the lantern. This makes him look good however it makes one wonder what his motive is...(come on there is always a motive)
11.In what seems to be a cleverly orchestrated plot, the lantern falls under the weight of Ting'Jun lighting it. Tianyi uses this as an opportunity to explain that the heavens must have been upset with his peaceful choice to avoid combat. Thus, even when Ting'jun assumes responsibility (clearly knowing this is a set up) Tianyi insists that he be punished for going against the heavens (I think the implication is that the two clans are expected to fight one another)
12.Bwahahahaa the star court is not to be taken for fools. The emperor is chastised before they show him what they knew all along: footage of him planning for this incident. This is designed to humiliate him, teach him a lesson (This guy has to be the main lead)
13.Ting Jun and Tianyi have a small confrontation and essentially they go after the other's weakness: Tianyi calls him out for being a mere prince (a.k.a. his mom is in charge) and Ting Jun calls him out for lacking military power (a.k.a. the wing kingdom can't afford to go to war with their small man power)
14.Meanwhile, Ling'er decides its a good idea to see Tingjun and climbs a mountain (I like her already, she's impulsive and not the brightest bulb)
15.(o yea these two are totally going to hook up) She isn't supposed to be on the mountain, and Tianyi is looking for Jade Cave (I have no idea why he is here, and I don't like his costume). She makes up that she is looking for a cave, takes advantage of his confusion, and uses her new dagger to threaten him to help her escape. Instead, he forces her against the mountain, makes it look like they are making out, and humakind soldiers leave (she drops her pretty new dagger...)
16.Ling'er looks pretty angry, and we are treated to the typical 'how dare you' and he plays it off in a cool way, continuing to take liberties that make her uncomfortable because she has to be a maiden of purity (sigh i hope the rest of the series is not like this). When he learns that she is looking for Tingjun he agrees to sneak her into the Flower Chase Festival (they pinkie promise)(she isn't completely dumb she expresses doubt over trusting him but she doesn't have much of a choice). he pulls her into his embrace for absolutely NO reason before strutting off (these kinds of arrogant characters I kind of hope something bad happens to them they just seem really one dimensional
17. OMG this has to be a teen drama, they have an 'elite club' that the emperor is in charge of and I guess he makes guys go through grueling tests to join. it feels like F4 I really, really hope that this drama doesn't go that route...
18.She accepts a special grass from the winged people that is supposed to make her fast enough to break into the star court (Rule 1: never accept food from strangers) this is given to her by a guy trying to get into this elite club
19.She breaks through, but naturally is arrested for breaking rules. Tianyi again sets Tianjun up. The star lords automatically think Tianyi is responsible because, well, he usually is. Ling'er punches a star lord out and she seems dizzy, and is imprisoned while they investigate.
20. The episode ends with her in prison.
_____________
Other than the pretty cast members and interesting opening, this show has not impressed me much. The dialogue has been pretty...meh, it all seems fairly predictable. I don't have high expectations but I hope it improves.

1.Lu zhen seems to have become friends with...the emperor? Anyways, she is promoted to the rank of 2nd made to Madame Zhou. Jealous girls continue to conspire against her but she seems to be born to be lucky.
2.Not a whole lot happens in this episode other than the fact that Madame Zhou is dying and and Lu Zhen wants to help her but the powers that be are against her. Even her other mentor, who is allowing her to study her books, warns here there is no such thing as a good person in the palace
3. Madame Zhou's former fave sets up a show that requires a piece of flesh to help cure Madame Zhou and she is about to stab Lu Zhen when other maids intervene and call her out. the girl wielding the knife is made to submit her own flesh, and then sent to the dungeons to be tortured.
4.We learn that this 'savior' is part of a larger plot orchestrated by Madame Lou who is trying to seize more power from Madame Wang. She will use the incident to gain control over the isolated palaces.

1.Essentially, nothing new is really shared bc most of ep 8 is part of ep 7 on viki. Sorry. I am continuing to the next episode.
Was this review helpful to you?
1.The emperor sees Lu Zhen and is immediately struck by her resemblance to the imperial consort. She is summoned the next day to see him and the emperor
2.Lu Zhen is at first flatted but her mentor explains to her that she is in danger as she is caught in a battle between the empress and the imperial consort. The empress would use her to lure the emperor away from the consort, the consort would kill her as being a threat. Either way, her being of low status would mean that inevitably she would be disposed of when the powers that be are finished using her.
3.Lu Zhen shows up and acts both dumb and wears way too much make up. It makes the emperor look like he was attracted to a simpleton, After this, the empress is angry with Madame Wang, who then sends Lu Zhen to the cold palace to serve.
4.We see a lot of the same games, as servants vie to be the favorite of Madame Zhou here. Lu Zhen seems to succeed but becomes ill. She is sent to the mediation court which seems to be where you get sent to die. Lu Zhen cleans it up, everyone likes her. She even shares some common medicinal knowledge to help others.
5.It seems Ah Bi has managed to curry the interest of the emperor (?)
6.They are now spreading a rumor that a girl was killed by the imperial consort (a girl working under Ah Zhan) because of the imperial consort's jealousy....Ah Zhan seems to be phased by this
I won't lie I skipped a bit in this episode because the same plots were being recycled and there didn't seem to be a fresh take. The focus on plots has taken away from any kind of unique character development and there is no romance yet so I am just waiting to see where this goes.
Was this review helpful to you?
2.Ah Zhan's sister is allowed to return. he tells her that he gave one of her jade pendants to a girl and if that person appears, to detain her for him.
3.Meanwhile, the Dowager Empress is about to hold a big fears. The girls are asked to help make shoes. Lu Zhen helps the girl who was beaten (Ah Bi's former buddy). Lu Zhen's friend cautions her not to help and look after herself (Lu Zhen is able to help her by coming up with an idea to turn the blood drops on the shoes into bees, gaining her more respect from the ministers)
4.The imperial consort insists she is aware of whatever plots Minister Lou is up to
5.The Dowager Empress is with the emperor and she and the consort trade words. essentially consort is trying to make the dowager look bad by choosing to mourn the late emperor longer, and will wear mourning clothes at her festival. The dowager counters by sharing that she is planning to introduce the emperor to harem girls, from powerful clans (basically that the consort's days as the emperor's favorite are numbered). The imperial consort mocks the young lady brought before her (who happens to have the bees on her shoes...)
6.In a tragic scene we see some hard lessons. Out of kindness, Lu Zhen allows the girl to take the credit for the design she made. The justice minister learns and then a moment later, the girl who said she did the design is dead. Lu Zhen learns from her mentor (yang) that she protected her identity due to the fact that she respected Lu Zhen's gracious behavior of helping someone who wronged her. But she tells her that the lives of the servants are worthless to the powers that be. It seems that the Madame who wore the slippers was mocked, so she killed herself. The person who designed them was executed quietly.
7.Yang (I think I am misunderstanding; i think she is an official, not a minister) then confronts the other woman who has been assisting Minister Wang. She lectures her for being dumb enough to get caught up in a war between Minister Lou and Wang, and tells her in the future, to leave Lu Zhen alone, that she will handle it (I think she is personally training Lu Zhen to be her successor)
8.The emperor is getting drunk. He feels responsible for the Madame Lipin taking her life because of the comments his mistress made. He says he wants to to give him the throne but Ah Zhan swears he is loyal. he drinks medicine meant for the emperor, knowing it is poisoned, in order to solidify his power (it seems he has built up poison resistance?) He maintains that he has gained more sway with the family (i think of the girl who killed herself) and also he has deceived Madame Lou (I can't tell yet if Ah Zhan is plotting to take the throne back...i think he is and is not as nice as he seems. i mean he can't really accept the throne from his brother because it would make him look bad)
9.Lu Zhen feels guilt over the girls death. She tries to burn paper to put her to rest (that's what it looks like) only it causes a small fire. Ah Bi tries to set her up and notifies the higher ups. Lu Zhen is nearly kicked out of the palace but Madame yang stands up for her, once again uses the princess's backing of her to help her, and Lu Zhen's ability to recite some rules all save her. but she is still beat 30 times....
10. meanwhile Ah Zhan learns that Lu Zheng is in the palace (seems she might have another powerful ally)
I gave this episode a 7 because the amount of plots just seems to be dizzying. It is probably true to the time period, I mean people were killed over what seems like trivial matters to us. I need to expand my knowledge of the time period to really comment on this. but i personally feel that the plots are becoming so entangled that I am finding it a bit confusing.

2.It soon becomes evident to the audience that Xuan Nu is bitter and jealous. She is hiding out here to avoid marrying a black bear spirit. She also has feelings for Li Jing. She is able to get Su Yin to teach her some magic that allows her to use BQ's face (I find this odd)
3.They encounter an untamed phoenix who is startled by Li Jing and Si Yin. Si Yin uses the Jade Purity fan to render it unconscious.
4.Unsurprising, she uses this face to seduce Li Jing...
--throughout all of this, MY remains in seclusion....

2.Li Yuan is ready to assume control of the ghost tribe. In a charged scene we learn the source of their enmity. Apparently Li Yuan's mother died because of Li Jing's mom. So Li Yuan personally strangled her. Li Jing outsmarts Li Yuan and assumes control of the ghost tribe with support of the celestial tribe. Li Yuan accuses him of being a traitor as he is dragged off.
3.Dijun (in a rare scene, not wearing purple) speaks up for Su Yin. At the same time, Su Jin is both named (apparently you get a name only after 1000 years in her tribe) and given to YH's parents to look after (they are childless, the mother is thought to maybe be barren).
4.In order to preserved her master, she swallows her pride and asks Li Jing for the Jade Stone. Li Jing says it was lost. Xuan Nu confronts Si Yin and says that it isn't lost. Having been found out, Li Jing tries to apologize but it is too late. He hits Xuan Nu hard (not really okay with that).
5.Dijun suggests in his usual vague way that 1st prince and his wife visit Kunlan for answers. She touches the lotus MY was cultivating and it disappears....now she is pregnant....it seems that the lotus was waiting for the right person and that person was her...YH will soon be born
6.Si Yin has dinner with her fellow disciples, gets them so drunk they pass out, and steals MY's body (creating one of the central conflicts in the story...)
This episode really lays the foundation for so many important things. So it was a good episode.

2.18th and 16th, meanwhile, part ways. The goal seems to be to find Su Yin and MY's body.
3.YH takes it upon himself to move in with BQ and work from (her) home. She can't really turn him away because they are engaged. But she is clearly not happy with this (I find this to be kind of annoying myself).
4.16th encounters some assassins and Su Jin has convinced herself that BQ is a seductress and that is the only reason why YH is giving her the time of day. She also believes that BQ will lose YH just like the 2nd prince, and Su Jin takes it upon herself to help her out in the 'losing YH'. Su Jin knows she can't attack her head on because BQ is much stronger than Su Su. She instead decides to start out by weakening her authority. Also, the sea princess shows up seeking to serve YH. Su Jin immediately recognizes that love sick face (I really, REALLY think that the reason why so many people like YH is because there aren't many alternatives/competition. DH is said to be unemotional, MY is dead, and 3rd prince is a well known Casanova. Everyone else is too young, or too old, or spineless and no one would entertain Li Jing because he is in the ghost tribe//so odd because in the books the biggest issue is not enough women and too many men). Anyways, Su Jin sees another tool in the sea princess.
5.Su Jin' s plan was to send her maid to address the inappropriateness of YH staying there. Mi Gu replies that the celestial tribe has too many rules and sends her off. Su Jin calls the fox tribe uncivilized (as compared to the celestial tribe, who eats their own).
6.We see a descent chunk of scenes dedicated to A Li, BQ, and YH acting cutesy, like a family, which I found boring. Give me romantic, give me passion...not family scenes. But I am shameless.
I gave this episode a 7.5 because most of it dragged (I get bored with the cutesy family scenes).
Was this review helpful to you?
2.Meanwhile, Li Jing and BQ run into one another. Li Jing passionately professes that she is his A-Yin, that he loves her and hopes to occupy some part of her heart. What follows is (in my opinion, one of the best speeches of the series): BQ cooly but proudly states she is Bai Quan of Quian and tells him she will have a talk about what happened with him because of his thoughts/feelings. She walks him through what happened, beginning with his choice of Xuan Nu. She is very direct and honest as she coldly explains that he broke her heart, that she entertained naive dreams of the two of them living together. But she also explains that it never would have worked out because of who she was (her status) and that her family never would have allowed them to be together. She explains that she truly loved him and her heart was truly broken by him. Since then she has moved on, and he should to.
3.YH gains confirmation that BQ is Su Su because when she fled the eastern sea she left her blindfold. He burns it in the lamp and it in fact proves they are the same. He and 3rd prince are now trying to figure out how Su Su passed as a mortal, with no memories.
4.Meanwhile, BQ visits her brother, FJ's aunt, to deliver some wine not expecting he is home. She is essentially forced to stay and talk, and learns that her brother is well aware that his daughter has been causing headaches in her pursuit of DH. BQ covers up for FJ and explains that she will keep her at her home and take care of her (in truth she has not exactly been keeping a close eye on her; probably because no matter how bad FJ is BQ was a million times worse in her youth). BQ sneaks away when she has the chance.
5.BQ comes home and complains about YH and after that only asks where FJ is (interestingly, she affectionately calls her Xiou Jiu, a name that DH came up with and uses in pillow book)
6.Change the scene to FJ, who has a chance to be seen by the emperor--his palanquin is on its way by and a guard whispers to the emperor (who did not ask for this info) that the woman is Lady Chen who almost died. DH calls her pitiful, and OUT OF PITY says she will be the one he will sleep with tonight (I am sorry but FJ was born under an unlucky star. Even in the mortal realm it is PITY that moves DH. Poor girl).
7.She has the normal reservations of someone who has never been to bed with someone (Side Note: in the novel, while this is the same in terms of reservations, her character talks about how the fox tribe sort of thought she was odd for trying to keep herself pure for DH since they are more simple, and passionate, than the rigid celestial court. essentially i took this to mean that no one would have judged her if she had taken a lover)
8.Unfortunately, the royal consort yet again intervenes. she has a priest arrive and insist that the mark on FJ is a sign of evil. The emperor is rather annoyed with this and does nothing to punish FJ, as his consort insists, but does say he will not see her tonight (things like this truly illustrate that thing called fate, and how it is constantly working against these two...)
9.FJ decides to visit DH the mortal in his dream and learn what his deepest desire is. Because he was never successful in love (the woman, and mother of the crown prince sort of abandoned him to become a nun) he seeks someone who loves him and only him, a devoted true-love. (Side note: i thought you couldn't use magic in this world? how can she do this?). Ironically, this wish has in a way already come true because FJ already loves him 100% even though he has rejected her time and again. I think this is an expression of Dijun's trues desire, even as a god, and his biggest secret.
10.Back to BQ (I know a lot of people think these scenes are cute and nice but they are a little too cutesy for me) who is with A Li. She's had him for a while and hasn't notified YH. Anyways YH is a bit high handed and gets annoyed when she gratifies A-Li's wishes (she doesn't seem to mind, also, that he calls her mother) while he is more responsible, being the parent, and lectures her on proper eating habits.
11. The episode ends on a cliff hanger, with Mi Gu crying out in shock while YH, A-Li, and BQ turn to see what is going on,
I liked this episode because of FJ. But I am biased. So please take that under consideration. I didn't give it a 10 because some elements were a bit too cutesy, others seemed like plot holes (maybe I am confused here).
Was this review helpful to you?
2.BQ arrives at the eastern sea, and naturally, she does not tell anyone her identity because that would make sense.
3.Li Jing arrives at the Eastern Sea and is treated rudely by 18th, who happens to live there, but the king intervenes on his behalf.
4.BQ encounters A-Li (they call him rice ball but in the novel it is little dough/the dough). She gives A Li the fan to play with (the cloud fan) and it causes the seaweed to come off the lights. It is so bright her invisible blindfold appears just as YH (who is looking for his son) walks by. He thinks it's Su Su.
5.YH steps out of the scene and snake lady shows up (I always forget her name) and begs for forgiveness. BQ offers to grant her a wish, which will effectively end their relationship when granted, and explains why she cannot forgive her in spite of her not being able to control who she fell in love with.
6.YH returns and since he knows her identity (eavesdropping) he can't wait to remind her of their engagement. BQ, in contrast, finds reasons to put barriers up by citing things such as their age as an issue. She seems to have no knowledge of YH despite A-Li's insistence that she is his mother. Then the sea king arrives, and she lies to him and says she is a servant of BQ sent to give a gift (she is doing this to escape having to appear publicly with YH).
7.YH's inner monologue reflects on his confusion, his belief that BQ and Su Su are the same, and wondering if she really forgot, if she is pretending to forget
8.The princess performs her dance to seduce YH (fails) and then later she tries to speak to YH and treats BQ rudely, who in turn reveals her identity. Just prior to this scene, an angry A-Li explains the entire Su Su story in a nut shell and accuses her of not really loving his father. To get the child to stop crying she says that YH is her only love, her honey (this is more fitting with A-Li's character in the novel). BQ later then tries to push the sea princess on YH, but A-Li conveniently shares the sweet love words that BQ told him--and YH is clearly happy with this.
9.An uncomfortable BQ escapes.
-I like this episode because it continues the love story and it also illustrates that BQ, who always seems so cool and unreachable, can be ruffled by somebody else. She is clearly aware of YH and he unsettles her and instead of confronting the issue head on, like she normally would, she takes every opportunity to avoid him and escape.
-I am not a fan of the more contrived things. I understand that the subplot of the sea princess is supposed to be used as an opportunity to bring them together but there are SO MANY women in the series with this kind of petty personality. Naturally when someone like FJ or BQ comes along you are going to like them because the alternatives are so annoying. The same goes for the men. Most of the male deities in the show look like grandpas or are spineless. So it makes us like DH or YH even more. While this show tries to have more depth than other romances it is still something that annoys me.

2.Next scene, FJ explains to her Aunt that she returned the lamp (now BQ is wearing cool blue, I think reflective of her personality which is supposed to be composed, smart, and understanding, while FJ wears bright red, because she is so bold and passionate).
3.The scene changes to the celestial court where we learn that BQ is making a rare appearance and visiting a sea king because a midwife there helped her mother birth her. Since her appearances are nonexistent, they are taking care to cover up lights out of respect to her sensitive eyes. Chung Ye is there and in her typical fashion continues to feel a strong affinity with BQ who the gossips say has had struggled with love (just like Chung Ye. i am extremely interested in her back story with 3rd prince).
4.Change scene to YH and A Li who plan to go to the eastern sea. Here he will presumably run into BQ, unleashing a torrent of new conflicts.
5.Back to FJ who is visited by Si Ming. He can hardly contain his excitement as he tells her she can pay her debt if she can come with him, but it will take two months (the equivalent of a lifetime in the mortal realm). Although she has been forbidden by her father to leave, when has that ever stopped her? FJ plans to sneak out while Mi Gu must struggle with the guilt of covering for her//it seems he will lie by omission he is so loyal)
6.Now we change scenes entirely. This is the mortal realm, and of course DH was born as an emperor (this would be consistent with the Chinese belief at that time that emperors had the favor of gods/ were even earth bound deities). I am not incredibly fond of his mortal look because of the beard but he still manages to be attractive (probably because I know what he really looks like//this is very shallow of me but at the same time difficult to ignore since in these dramas actors are required to be good looking, unlike in america)
7.FJ learns from Si Ming that he is here to undergo trials. Si Ming says it was his idea that this could be how she repays his kindness. (Perhaps DH's reason is something shared in confidence, and the reason why Si Ming circulates the 'cover up' explanation of being there to undergo trials. recall DH said he wanted to give FJ what she wanted i.e. himself and he could do this as a mortal)
8.FJ learns that Si Ming needs her assistance in the love trial that DH must undergo. A concubine of DH's is soon to catch a cold and die. DH it seems slept with her twice and has forgotten about her. FJ will assume her identity after she falls into a pond. her name will be Lu Chen.
9.FJ refuses to hide her flower (forehead) because her aunt said it was a good sign; Si Ming warns her that it may not be taken that way in the mortal realm. He is right. Just when her name comes up on the roster for the emperor (it seems that names get circulated on this list, and when your name is next the emperor spends the night with you. what a system. imagine if that was reversed for us ladies?) she runs into a royal consort (basically a woman with a higher rank than her in the harem) who seems to have it out for her. She refuses to let her see him because of her 'evil' flower mark.
10.FJ again tries to disguise herself as a maid (I don't know why she thought this would work. she also looks even younger because of her hair style) and fails. She also attracts the attention of the royal consort. I cannot emphasize enough that FJ was just born under an unlucky star.
11.Meanwhile, the disgraced 2nd prince visits phoenix for some peaches. It seems he and his wife, the snake girl, can't keep there hands off of one another and since this is her 5th child, they want some peaches to prevent pregnancy. I wish birth control tasted so good! Phoenix agrees. I think this was included because 2nd prince did what he wanted, and is blissfully happy, while everyone else is...miserable. Damn the rules.
12.BQ discusses with phoenix the strangeness of marrying YH, who is younger than her, and how awkward it will be.
13.YH arrives at the eastern sea, and the sea princess who earlier rescued A-Li conveniently lives here. She and her father (or is it brother?) conceive of a plan to try to seduce YH, whom she has developed feelings for (I don't get it. I don't think YH is that good looking, other than his hair. Am I alone in this?)
END EPISODE
I gave this episode an 8.5 because I really like the interactions between FJ and her Aunt, and because FJ is finally going to have an opportunity to address her feelings with DH (even if he is mortal). I found the scenes with YH to drag a lot.

2.After her labor Su Su shows no interest in the child and continues to be weak and depressed. I think she has already decided her plan of action (I don't want to spoil anything). I also think her heart is completely broken.
3.Meanwhile, Su Jin throws a tantrum in her rooms, convinced that Su Su has the best luck and expresses anger and despair because now that Su Su has birthed a prince, her position is likely to be cemented.
3.YH continues to give Su Su gifts, but she isn't buying his sweet act. She thinks he loves Su Jin and is doing this out of obligation. She begins to memorize the path to the terrace. I think we all know what she is planning. (Side Note: this plot device, of believing the male lead is in love with another, is very prominent in the sequel, pillow book).
4.FJ spies on a conversation that DH is having with the phoenix. She overhears that not only does he not require her to pay a debt but that she has been an inconvenience (ouch). Feeling dejected, she leaves and runs into YH's cousin (the girl also in love with DH) For reasons that make ZERO SENSE this girl chooses to throw her into the pagoda??!! This is one of those WTF moments, the last being, when the celestial emperor found Su Su. Again, WTF? This literally makes no sense. WHY WOULD SHE DO THIS???
5. The scene switches to YH who sees Su Su speaking to the Phoenix god. In typical YH fashion he makes a blunder and asks if she is causing trouble (yet again reaffirming her beliefs that she is a burden). He apologizes on her behalf in spite of the god saying she has caused no trouble. Then he escorts her back to her rooms and she acts a little afraid of him (who wouldn't be?) he tries to comfort her with good news: they will be married soon. she seems to not be excited but says that is nice in a very listless way. And yet again we see another case of YH focusing on his own goals and overwriting/dismissing her feelings (probably thinking that he can make it all better with a ring).
6.DH appears in red flames to rescue FJ. (This is my favorite part in the entire series, seeing Dijun get this angry). He has a fight with the guardian of the pagoda, a horribly rendered CGI monster who is described as 'the terror of the heavens'. My one complaint is that they make him seem weaker than he actually is, both in the series and compared to the novels. FJ tries to help but is knocked unconscious. DH has a strangely excited expression on his face as he takes out this creature (he is supposed to be sadistic in the novel, so maybe he was trying to project that?) I guess he hasn't fought for a while?
7.In the next scene FJ is sleeping in Dijun's private chambers, and he is watching her intently from behind a screen. I call this his 'aha moment' because this is when I think he realizes he is in love with her and thus this changes their relationship. Given who he is, and what he eventually reveals, I am not surprised he sends her away under the excuse 'you have caused too much damage'. He is sending her away I think because he likes her.
8.FJ leaves, returns home all upset, and to distract herself from her depression, she goes to confront the snake who married 2nd prince, causing her aunt to lose face. FJ, having a softer heart than BQ, agrees to accept the cloud fan when offered as an apology (recall BQ gifted this to the snake girl) and admits that she she should be mad at her but seems to accept the apology. She does state that she can't accept an apology for her aunt i.e.speak for her but acknowledges that she earned her respect because she never revealed any of the fox clans secrets.
9.FJ returns home and her father is there to yell at her. Presumably because she ran away without telling anyone for many years and because she snuck in to help DH. END EPISODE.

2.Meanwhile, Su Jin and Su Su run into the demoted 2nd prince and his pregnant wife (the snake spirit). His wife stares at Su Su intently (undoubtedly because she looks like BQ). Meanwhile Nia Nia (maid; apologies I think I spelled this wrong) who is unclear of the rules obeys a message from Su Jin's servant, to bring the fan to Su Su to the Lotus pond (where the assembly is to be held). She obeys.
3.Su Su overhears the emperor lecture YH to essentially not allow any weakness in. Su Su then runs into the emperor. Su Jin makes up an excuse as to why they are there but it doesn't seem to earn her any points with the emperor. Su jin continues to maintain that she is safe. YH emerges and coldly tells Su Su to return and gives Su Jin a thinly veiled warning to stay away. Given what Li Jing has told Su Su, it seems to confirm her words that YH is angry with her. YH quietly warns Su Su to stay away from her, but with no explanation and her already feeling depressed, I doubt that will work out.
4.Change scene to FJ who plans to sneak into the assembly by pretending to be Si Ming's maid. He is shocked by her shamelessness and insists she wouldn't dare but FJ insists she will be his maid ( I adore her and her relationship with Si Ming is like that of best friends). Meanwhile 2nd prince and his wife greet the emperor who lectures him for giving up a good future to be with a woman. They implore him to forgive them.
5.A bunch of ancient looking deities are gathered at the lotus pond (how come only some deities age well and others don't? DH is probably the oldest god and he looks young) The servant girl arrives with the fan, and seeing Su Su runs towards her. Someone uses magic to make her trip (gee, I wonder who?), and the purity fan reacts, startling the phoenix that came with the Lord of Numinous Treasures.
6.Every one scatters, and unfortunately FJ is attacked after failing to dodge the bird and coughs up blood. It tries to kill her. She faints. Si Ming tries to help her. Li Jing tries to fight it off and claims it is untamed. It is YH who ultimately delivers the killing blow after some fancy sword work. He then takes custody of the fan.
7.FJ is very injured (this girl has bad luck. just read the sequel and you will see a total confirmation of this) and is carried back, unconscious to the maid chambers. DH arrives with YH's cousin and appears to be extremely pissed (Si Ming was supposed to keep an eye on her). Si Ming explains what happened. DH orders everyone out, including the medicine man, and personally sees to her injuries (!) (I cannot emphasize enough how big this is because DJ really doesn't bother with anyone or anything. Indifference is an understatement. He didn't even partake in the battle 70000 years ago b/c he couldn't be bothered)
8.Su Su is being interrogated (poor Su Su!) She explains that the fan was supposed to be a fake. The emperor is relentless--ignorance does not excuse you, he says. The maid insists she was told to bring the fan. Su Su believes she was framed. YH tells her to shut up (basically) and bows his head asking for forgiveness. (I imagine that for Su Su, unfamiliar with these politics, is utterly baffled by these games. She continues to defend herself only to be yelled at by YH again and again. Su Su doesn't understand how far these people will go to kill her/She's also never really been treated this way by YH). Si Jin uses this as an opportunity to make herself look good by standing up for Su Su but YH insists Su Su will take her own punishment (yeouch)
9.The Lord of Numinous Treasures bursts in and learns what startled the phoenix. He says that the phoenix basically suffers from PtSD after Su Yin used the Jade Purity Fan on him 70000 years ago. Nevertheless, the bird was untamed. The Lord of Numinous Treasures takes responsibility for bringing an untamed bird to the gathering. Even though the incident is let go, YH uses it to issue an order designed to protect Su Su--she is not allowed to leave her palace without his permission, but for someone as lonely and depressed as Su Su she probably views it as yet another confirmation that YH doesn't not hold her dearly (it seems like a punishment) Worse, it is extremely humiliating to be punished like that in front of so many people, especially when she knows she is innocent. Poor Su Su.
10.The Lord of Numinous treasures cautions YH to send Su Su away before she is killed by his family. Meanwhile the celestial lord has a private audience with Si Jin in order to understand why she stood up for the mortal. She essential reveals that she wants the mortal dead due to concern for YH (uh-huh) She will help the celestial lord kill Su Su if he will grant her wish to become YH's side consort. (Talk about ambitious!). The celestial lord respects her ruthlessness and believes that she is the kind of person needed by YH's side. Su Su's days are now numbered.
11.DH uses his own cultivation on FJ (this is probably unusual for him). She weakly asks how her debt would be paid. DH studies her intently. (I can just see the wheels of passion turning in his cold eyes and instead of moving forward I bet it is going in reverse)
12.The scene changes and Nai Nai is begging for forgiveness. Su Su apologizes for getting her involved in this nonsense. She also reveals her insecurity as she asks about the relationship between YH and Si Jin. She learns that they grew up together. YH later visits Su Su but she pretends to be asleep, and the gap between them continues to widen (I think YH should have taken more care with her instead of keeping her at his side and not telling her what his plans were he just expected her to blindly trust him?? come on!)
13. FJ awakens and feels guilt at causing more problems for Dijun (nevermind he chose to personally heal her). She is so weak she turns into her fox form. Dijun finds her collapsed and picks her up and carries her into his palace. His expression seems concerned.
14.The scene changes to Su Su, who finally awakens and explains to him that she has mood swings because of pregnancy and apologizes (I view this as a cry for help. Also shows she is guilty of not communicating with him but since he is thousands of years older than her, I blame him) He in turn explains that they can't be as carefree now that they are in the palace. She frees him of all blame (????) and cuddles up next to him. She makes her wish clear: she wants to go back to the way they lived on the mountain. Unfortunately, it is becoming increasingly clear that it is unlikely to happen. She seems so forlorn! . YH leaves her again.
15.DH continues to use his cultivation to heal FJ, who is still in her fox form. Si Ming asks if she has returned and it appears she has not and is going to be staying with Dijun now (so different from the novels!)
16.MEANWHILE Li Jing, ghost prince, learns that his older brother has succeeded in instigating a rebellion. Now he has to go take care of this. Xuan Nu picks the wrong time to throw a tantrum. In her defense...she didn't know about the rebellion. (on dramafever there is a weird 1 second cut scene that clearly did not belong here)
17.FJ meanwhile is doing great. She chooses to take full advantage of this situation and pretend she is ill to remain close to DH (can't say I wouldn't do the same). He isn't stupid. But this is an opportunity to indulge her and himself without having to answer any tough questions (basically I think they can satisfy their desires without having to confront them//physical contact without any shame). He discusses matters with Si Ming all the while petting FJ.
18.MEANWHILE we learn that the scarlet flame lion that YH supposedly killed is alive and helping the rebels O_o
I really enjoyed this episode. Every element and subplot was enough to keep me glued to the screen--Su Su's trials as well as DH actually nursing FJ all were great, and now we have a rebellion from the elder brother of the ghost tribe who has been 'missing'. What will happen next?
