Don't forget your tissue boxes

I'm not going to go too in depth with this review because simply writing about Mother won't give it the justice that it deserves. I watched Mother months ago, but my heart still aches whenever I think about it (I promise that I'm not crying as I write this review). I believe that Mother is the true definition of an unforgettable series. Every element of the show, from the story to the music, enhanced each other in such a way that without even one element, the show wouldn't be the same. This unity within the show might be why it's so unlike any other Asian dramas out there. Along with how unified the show is, I felt that the story was amazingly executed. No matter how interesting a story is, if it's not executed properly, then it's meaning will be lost. So, it's truly amazing that the story of Mother is carried out so well that the meaning isn't lost. I also appreciated how every character and every part of the story always related back to one thing; the "kidnapping." Sometimes, shows get so carried away with their side stories that it becomes really confusing. So, it was refreshing to see that everything in Mother always related back to the "kidnapping" in some way. Honestly, I still don't understand how something as genuine and as brilliant as Mother could ever be created, but it was created, so we should give ourselves a chance to appreciate this masterpiece.

PS: I gave a low rewatch value rating because Mother is so special that I wouldn't want to ruin it's impact on me by rewatching it.

Great Concept, Improper Execution

Coming into Why R U, I didn't know what to expect, but I must have expected something because the show left me a bit disappointed. Before I started watching , I didn't do any research on the storyline or the characters. So, with my limited background knowledge on the series, I expected Saifai and Zon to be the main BL couple. I mean, the first episode began with Zon's "crisis," (you'll know what I mean if you watch the show ;) so I assumed he would be in the main couple. A couple of episodes later, to my disappointment, I realized that Fighter and Tutor were the main BL couple. I only say I was disappointed because Saifai and Zon's relationship was so adorable, and I wish we saw more of them:( I really enjoyed the first half of the show, (until around episode 6 i think) but afterward, the show went downhill for me for three reasons. One, I didn't understand the point of any of the BL couples besides the main two. The stories of the other BL couples fell flat because of a lack of development, so I felt like there was no point of them in the show. And honestly, those other couples just added more confusion to the show. The scenes of the main BL couples were already scrambled enough (as if random scenes were placed into random parts of the episodes). So, randomly adding the scenes of the other BL couples just made the show more of a mess. On the side of the potential straight couples though, I feel that Day and Hwahwa was the only couple that was executed nicely. I know I've rambled :) about my first reason why the second half of Why R U went downhill for me, but my second reason is that I had hoped that Saifai and Zon's story would receive more development, but it really didn't. I thought maybe Why R U was going to stray from the BL norm of only developing the story of the main BL couple and go more in depth with Saifai and Zon's story. Sadly though, only Figher and Tutor's relationship received some developmet. My final reason why I think that the second half of the series wasn't amazing is the main BL couple itself. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that kissing scenes in BL always take away from the value of the story, but in Fighter and Tutor's case, it did. Though Fighter and Tutor's make out scenes were pretty hot, it seemed like making out was what the couple's story was driven on. Why R U was similar to TharnType in the aspect of make out scenes, but at least in TharnType, the couple's story was developed in a way that there was more to their relationship than sex. However, in Why R U, Fighter and Tutor's relationship seemed too sex-driven, making their relationship quite superficial.

Alright, if you made it this far into my review, I believe that Why R U had a lot of potential that, sadly, was lost due to how disorganized the show was and the lack of meaning in the relationships. In my book, meaning is what truly makes a BL successful, and unfortunately that is something that Why R U didn't have too much of.
