It gives a lot more complexity to the plot. It makes the characters denser than in "The Pornographer" and that is great. For sure is one of the most engaging BL's I ever watched (and I watched some). It was great to notice how the characters evolved along the time. My feelings were mixed in several circumstances, and that is very good. I fell in love with the characters, but I also was disgusted sometimes. It is cool, sad, hot, real, and a lot of other things.
There are hot scenes and they are good. It's great to watch a drama that does not have the usual "resistance" to sex or even kiss scenes. This is simply natural, and I always found it weird how BL usually treats it.
Again, I loved the colors of this series.
