'When the Phone Rings's Yoo Yeon Seok, Lee Je Hoon among the nominees for Daesang (MBC Drama Awards)

The Grand Prize (Daesang) nominees for the MBC Drama Awards 2024 have been announced.

The MBC Drama Awards 2024, set to take place on December 30 has revealed the nominees for the prestigious Grand Prize (Daesang) Award. The list includes the following actors:

1. Lee Ha Nee for Knight Flower

Knight Flower follows the story of Cho Yeo Hwa (Lee Ha Nee), a woman who has been living as a widow for 15 years. She wears a mask and leaps over her house wall to help powerless commoners. Knight Flower was themed as a Joseon-era superwoman K-drama, and Lee Ha Nee delivered a versatile performance, showcasing skills in action and comedy. 

2. Kim Nam Joo for Wonderful World

Wonderful World tells the story of Eun Soo Hyun (Kim Nam Joo), a psychology professor and a famous writer whose life is turned upside down after she loses her son. She takes justice into her own hands and uncovers the secrets tied to that fateful day. Returning to MBC after 13 years, Kim Nam Joo portrayed a wide range of emotions, from maternal love to vengeful fury in the K-drama. 

3. Lee Je Hoon for Chief Detective 1958

Chief Detective 1958 is a prequel to Chief Inspector. The K-drama takes place in 1958 when Detective Park Young Han was appointed to Seoul. Lee Je Hoon took on the role of young Park Young Han, a talented and charismatic detective, who just can't tolerate injustice. 

4. Kim Hee Sun for Bitter Sweet Hell

Bittersweet Hell is a black comedy K-drama that tells the story of Noh Young Won (Kim Hee Sun), a renowned family psychiatrist, who is threatened by an unknown blackmailer. This leads her to collaborate with her mother-in-law to protect her family. 

Playing Noh Young Won, Korea's top family psychological counselor, Kim Hee Sun portrayed the resilience and determination of a character willing to risk everything for her family. 

5. Byun Yo Han for Black Out

Black Out tells the story of a young man, Go Jung Woo, who was branded as a culprit in a murder case, while the corpse was never found. After serving ten years in prison, he now seeks to uncover the truth of the case that turned his life upside down. Byun Yo Han, playing the lead role of Go Jung Woo, a man wrongfully accused of murder and branded a convict, delivered a praise-worthy performance as he pursued the truth behind events from 10 years ago. 

6. Han Seok Kyu for Doubt

Doubt follows Jang Tae Su (Han Seok Kyu), the nation's top profiler, who comes to know about his daughter's secret intertwined with a murder case he's investigating. Han Seok Kyu delivered a deep performance, portraying a father in a psychological battle with his daughter. 

7. Yoo Yeon Seok for When the Phone Rings

When the Phone Rings centers around a couple in their third year of an arranged marriage. Despite being together for three years, the duo's relationship has been cold. They would have continued living as usual, until their lives were turned upside down by a threatening phone call.  Yoo Yeon Seok is currently the most buzzworthy actor, as When the Phone Rings continues to dominate Netflix rankings.

The MBC Drama Awards 2024 will air on December 30.
