A Stalker's Guide to Oguri Shun

I first saw Oguri Shun as Oda Nobunaga in Nobunaga Concerto and I was surprised I actually liked the show. I love him as a Yakuza or Policeman. Crows Zero and Crows Zero 2 are both amazing and his roles in Ouroboros seem to fit.  His role in Rich Man, Poor Woman seemed forced, while it is one of his most popular dramas, did nothing for me.

He was amazing in Crisis, Stand Up!!, Gokusen, Hana Kimi, Smile, BORDER, Tokyo Dogs… Just go to his page and watch his stuff, it’s all good.

And oh yeah HanaDan, he was in that drama too right?

If you ever watch him on Vs. Arashi you will know he totally dominates every time he is on. I don’t think he has 100% success rate but it is pretty darn close.

Early life

Oguri Shun is the third child born to his family, his older brother being Oguri Ryo, (if you google translate the Japanese Wikipedia it will say his name is Isao) who was a stage actor and an older sister. His father is Oguri Tetsuya who is a stage director. On 14 March 2012, four years to the day they started dating, he married actress Yamada Yu. They have two children a daughter born in 2014 and another child just born in 2017. Yamada Mikako is his mother in law and Yamada Shintaro is his brother in law.

Shun was given his name after a fortuneteller told them the name would give their son a lifetime of good fortune.

With his father’s career, it is no wonder he started acting on the small stage in children’s theater at the age of 11. Two years later he went from stage to the small screen in the  NHK drama “Hachidai Shogun Yoshimune”  In 1999 he stopped acting to concentrate on baseball and high school, but in 2000 he quit school. His first movie role came in 2003. In 2005 he gained stardom with his role of Hanazawa Rui in Hana Yori Dango. Fear of being typecast propelled him to choose a variety of roles.   

He has done 6 documentaries Story of the world Ullrun Siberian version ( Mainichi Broadcasting - February 4, 2001), Passion continent (Mainichi Broadcasting · November 11 and 18, 2007), Experience! Cirque du Soleil seen as Oguri Shun ( Every day. · June 3rd - October 9th, 2008),  24-hour special number! Shun Oguri "Crow ZERO II" and their friends ( Perfect choice · July 31 - August 1, 2008), Physical expression of Corteo super circus touched by actor, Shun Oguri ( Fuji TV · December 27, 2008) and Please tell us the war (Fuji TV · August 15, 2015).

He made his directorial debut in 2009 with Crows ZERO II CM and his first film was Surely Someday released on 17 July 2010.

He was also a screenwriter for the movie HK: Forbidden Super Hero in 2013

This I did not know about him until I started this article. He is a huge manga fan. Here's a partial picture of his collection. the circled book is his Gintama collection and fans were upset he didn't have more. Article here. Hey is that the Bleach Manga next to it? I have those!

In trying to figure out how to make this post less table-riffic I re-read all the plays he has been in and realized that most of the readers probably have never seen "A Clockwork Orange" or "Young Frankenstein" and I feel really really old.  I recommend both for different reasons.  Picturing Oguri as Alex, I bet he crushed the role.

OAL why do you post commercials? I mean I usually record my shows so I don't have to watch them, or better yet I just watch the internet.  Several reasons: Japanese commercials have a SPECIAL reputation, rather than being seen as a lowly job CMs seem to be a rite of passage for actors in Japan, and I personally am always looking for clips for music videos I may make someday, CMs are great for those.

I found a bilibili account with a TON of Shun's commercials so I am going to just post that link here.

I am very happy Shun is still successful and has a happy family to go with his success.  He got into acting wanting to meet Idol Uchida Yuki. At first, he hated doing plays and acting classes but now states that acting is his life.  As he gets older his characters get more depth and we get to see more sides of him.  I personally am glad he stuck with it because I love almost anything he has ever been in.
