In the past, I would usually always hesitate to watch a drama from Mainland China. Most of the previous ones I had seen were always too long to watch or unsatisfactory in some other way.

This time, I decided to watch My Sunshine (a.k.a Silent Separation) because the story caught my interest. It's about college sweethearts who were separated and meet again years after - a simple but sweet plotline. Another reason I started watching My Sunshine is because of Wallace Chung. As much as I have liked him for years, I was never able to complete any of his dramas. The only things I were able to finish were a few episodes of Best Time. This time, I decided to give this drama a chance and it didn't fail me.

First, here’s the synopsis of the drama:

Zhao Mo Sheng (played by Tang Yan) met He Yi Chen (played by Wallace Chung), one of the top law students in the university and fell in love with him. However, due to a misunderstanding between them, they got separated for years when she left for overseas. Seven years later, when Zhao Mo Sheng came back, they met again and how do their story go from there?

Now, let's get to the main point - why I have fallen in love with this drama.

Reason 1: The handsome and smart He Yi Chen

Clearly he is the main reason of my love for this drama. He is a smart and successful lawyer and the story shows him in action multiple times. He's full of wit and intelligence - unlike in other dramas where they claimed intelligent characters but in reality the character makes multiple stupid mistakes.

He never fell for tricks set by his love rival to create complications in his relationship with Mo Sheng. He is just so composed even when faced with challenges, but his actions show his unwavering love for Mo Sheng. In addition to that, he protects her in in his own way, never hesitating to fight for what he wants from the beginning till the very end. Apart from the fact that he is seemingly cold-hearted, his character his perfect. I just wish there were more dramas with male leads like He Yi Chen.

And Wallace Chung was the perfect actor to play He Yi Chen. He had the looks and the top notch action skills. He made the character PERFECT!

Reason 2: The Storyline

The story of college sweethearts rekindling their relationship has been done in dramas before. Nonetheless, this drama has made this cliche storyline surprisingly refreshing and novel. It is not a surprise since the original novel has gained so much popularity. This drama has both light, sweet moments plus some darker dramatic moments in between. Although the story started lagging a little in the last few episodes, I still enjoyed it overall. In addition to the main storyline, the cute and sweet backplot in college was very nicely done with younger actors.

Reason 3: The Music

OSTs always play a major part in whether a drama is good or GREAT. This drama has an amazing soundtrack from the opening song 'My Sunshine' to the ending song, 'Why Love!' by Wallace Chung. One song that attracted my attention was 'The Road Not Taken' by Gao Shan. Interesting enough, the lyrics are in English but suit the drama very well. This song seems to be based on an English poem with the same name.

Other things to note:

No matter how much I love He Yi Chen, it was hard for me to watch the adult Zhao Mo Sheng character. She was too quiet and weak for most of the drama while the younger version was so bubbly and cute. Although I could rationalize that it was because she had a lot to go through in those years, it was just hard to like her.

Regardless, with the above-mentioned reasons, I have fallen in love with this drama and the character of He Yi Chen. Although the drama got a bit too laggy near the end, I found it great overall. Here’s a 3-min trailer. If you enjoy it, why not give this drama a chance! Enjoy!
