Missed Kisses:
It would've been Perfect, If only it HAPPENED 

How many times did you scream to your screen for your OTP to just KISS already? Or you waited as your handsome main lead painfully and slowly tries to approach your timid female lead’s lips and then when your favorite couple is finally about to actually DO it, something gets in the way and the much- awaited kiss is gone with the wind.
 
In fact, since producers know that “The Kiss” is the most crucial point in their dramas, they like to playfully tease us and build what seems to be THE PERFECT kissing mood, only to completely wreck it after that. That’s why I’m going to preview some of the perfectly missed kisses opportunities and try to find out what went wrong exactly. Of course, you know that anything that brings up kisses is a SPOILER and I don’t think that an almost kiss is an almost spoiler, do you?

Missed Kiss #1: Ojakgyo Brothers

Unlucky couple: Hwang Tae Hee & Baek Ja Eun

Wasted set-up: Innocent Ja Eun is daydreaming about her fiance in his own room when he catches her by surprise and finds out that his innocent fiancee does actually think about things like Kisses. So, he snatches the opportunity to show her the real thing. And just when they’re like this:

Hang On! I’m about to make it!

Grandma barges to the room; yes, we love you Granny but you should work on your timing. Now, this grandma is actually cool. So, she just tells the young couple to LOCK the door and complete their business. See! Even grannies know that you LOCK the door if you don’t want to be interrupted. What really bugs me here is that our lovely couple just stands there looking at each other. They get too busy laughing and they forget all about the kiss.

Overall: Although Granny ruined the mood, she was so cool and it’s hard to get angry with her. To be honest, Tae Hee and Ja Eun never had super HOT scenes, but they made up with their cutesy and sweetness.

Missed Kiss #2: Personal Taste

Unlucky couple: Jeon Jin Ho & Park Gae In

Wasted set-up: While fooling around, Jin-Ho and Gae In found themselves in a really intimate position. So, they made use of the situation and prepared themselves for the KISS. Only, they failed miserably and very cutely. It looks that both were very eager to kiss, so they seemed to close their eyes a split-second earlier and consequently, miss each other’s lips. Instead, their attempt resulted in the most awkward nose-bumping kiss imitation ever. Honestly, I don’t know what’s wrong with Korean girls; it’s either they keep their eyes wide open through the entire kiss or close their eyes and miss their partner's lips.

Seriously, how could anyone miss Lee Min Ho’s lips???

To further ruin any chances of redeeming this kiss, Gae In’s friend had to pop up at her house at this moment which resulted in this: 

Overall:  the kiss was a failure even before annoying friend barged in. What can I say more?

 Missed Kiss #3: Sungkyunkwan Scandal

Unlucky couple: Lee Sun Joon & Kim Yoon Hee

Wasted set-up: To make things clear: First, this is a historical drama that takes place in the late Joseon era (meaning sometime in the 19th Century). Second, our female lead is disguised as a man but don’t you worry at this point Sun Joon knows she’s a girl.

Like the other incomplete kisses, this one had a perfect set-up: After dragging her into a dark alley, Sun Joon promises her to defy every single stupid social rule so that nothing could set them apart. Then, he leans in for the kiss (and he perfectly earned it with his earth-shattering promise). Only, it never crossed his mind that Yoon Hee’s disguise would become an obstacle for their kiss. Apparently, Joseon’s brimmed hats (the ones only men wear) were not designed to allow men to kiss while wearing them.

In other words, their damn hats kept bumping into each others preventing Sun Joon from reaching her lips. Poor boy! He tried different angles but the stubborn hats stood in his way and were so determined to ruin his chance. Finally, he gave up and it was so cute to see how disappointed he was. Yoon Hee found that funny for sure and laughed to cover up her disappointment too.

Overall: This kiss-fail was very funny and cute. It’s only fair to say it didn’t make me mad as much as it made me laugh. Plus, Sun Joon is a quick learner so he doesn’t make you wait forever before he kisses her again for real.

Missed Kiss #4: A Gentleman’s Dignity

Unlucky couple: Kim Do Jin & Seo Yi Soo

Wasted set-up: at that stage of the drama, Do Jin and Yi Soo were still playing chase games. More accurately, Do Jin was the one chasing after Yi Soo while she was thinking: I’m definitely NOT attracted to this man and I don’t care that my heart beats ten times faster whenever he’s around. So, our couple was drinking with a friend. After that friend went to the other room, the conversation took a serious turn. Do Jin practically tells Yi Soo that she couldn’t possibly be not attracted to him because he’s one of the guys who fit the taste of every woman in the universe! (Is this self-confidence or arrogance?) Then, he asks her to ignore her brain’s order for once and follow her heart, or just blame it on the alcohol and he leans in for the kiss! Damn arrogant or not, he sure made her SWOON and just when Do Jin succeeded in melting the ice, his friend decides that his cell phone’s reception is better in the kiss- room and interrupts the scene. And what’s Yi Soo’s perfect solution to avoid the awkwardness? Well, drop dead of course.

Overall: It really was a nice build moment and it does make your heart flutter when he’s leaning in. I wasn't very disappointed because the whole drop dead- asleep sequence made me laugh.

Missed Kiss #5 & #6: Boys Over Flowers

Unlucky couple: Go Jon Pyo & Geum Jan Di

This has to be one of the most famous couples in dramaland and their way to happily ever after was lined with obstacles. Kissing wasn't very easy for those two as well.

Wasted set-up 1: This lost chance happened very early in their relationship. It was also the first time Jan Di acts friendly with Jon Pyo. Of course, she happened to be drunk and completely wasted what caused her to act weirdly.  Jon Pyo was enjoying the show till she offered to give him a “thank you” kiss. Jon Pyo was a little bit scared of her crazy attempts but he knew she wouldn’t do it, anyway. Surprisingly, Jan Di managed to get very close to him and for a split-second, he believed she would actually kiss him. Right then, she threw up everything she ate that day on his super expensive suit. Poor, Poor, Jon Pyo!

Overall: She BARFED on him! Enough said that romance was doomed to hardship from day 1. 

Wasted set-up 2: This time, our teenage couple was on their first official date. They were watching a movie in Jon Pyo’s car when things began to heat up. Their hands touched while reaching for popcorn and romance was flying in the air. Jon Pyo knew that was the moment. He gave himself the prep-talk and mustered all of his courage. He leaned in very slowly and Jan Di closed her eyes in anticipation. Everything was going smoothly.

Jan Di’s parents had to call her at this defining moment. Very shocked, Jon Pyo and Jan Di reacted as if their parents surprised them while being naughty and every intention of kissing evaporated. Just look at Jon Pyo’s face:

Overall: I think the writers wanted us to really wait till we see the real lip-lock.

Missed Kiss #7: Faith

Unlucky couple: Choi Young & Yoo Eun Soo

The way he stares melts my heart.

Wasted set-up: Many would argue this was not meant to be a kiss attempt from the first place but I really think it was. Eun Soo was all dressed up like a Woodalchi (royal guard) as she convinced Captain Choi Young that she would follow his orders like a good obedient soldier. And while she was answering him, she kept saying Yes, Daejang (captain) in her soldier-like way. Apparently, the word “Daejang” turns him on because he asked her to repeat what she was saying to hear this word again. As Yoo Soo obeyed the orders, Choi Young kept getting near and near her face while staring at her lips with a look that can melt ice and make it evaporate for good measures. Alas, his second in command interrupts the scene shouting “Daejang!”Yeah, it’s not sexy anymore, (-_-) and so long for our hot steaming kiss :’(

Overall: This kiss- abort left me very disappointed. In my opinion, this show suffered from a severe lack of kissing (CPR is not a kiss!!) and I really wanted to see Daejang and Dr. Eun Soo having some private romantic time. So, yes this was very mean from you, writer!

Missed Kiss #8: In Time with You 

 Unlucky couple: Li Da Ren & Cheng You Qing

*This is the one and only Taiwanese drama I’ve ever watched and I totally love it!

Wasted set-up: First, I think I won't be spoiling you if I said: Li Da Ren and Cheng You Qing have been best friends forever. The whole world knows that Da Ren loves You Qing and You Qing loves Da Ren, except for Da Ren and You Qing. (the premise of the drama)

This kiss attempt takes place on the bed of a hotel room (HOT!) where Da Ren and You Qing were drinking and discussing the truth about love. The conversation leads them to wonder whether women could take advantage of men (the way men take advantage of women). Consequently, Da Ren spreads his arms and challenges You Qing if she can take advantage of him and kiss him. You Qing, being the stubborn girl that she is, takes the challenge and places her face right above his own to show him she’s not afraid.  

This was pure torture!

For a long lingering moment, she hovers above him, only inches away from his lips. Da Ren finally closes his eyes and for a split- second, he believes that this is the moment he always waited for. Only then You Qing backs off and starts laughing hysterically about the absurdity of what could have happened. 

Overall: Agh! So, I knew they couldn't kiss so soon in episode 4, but still HOW COULD you do that to poor Da Ren and me??

Missed Kiss #9: City Hunter 

 Unlucky couple: Lee Yoon Sung & Kim Nana

Wasted set-up: Nana is sound asleep on Yoon Sung‘s sofa when he comes to cover her with a blanket. He brushes her hair with a sweet smile on his face. And this smile kills me; it shows how happy he is just to be near Nana, touching her. Then, he stands up and turns his back to go, but he can’t control himself (YAY!) So he crouches back near her and brushes her eyebrow with the same impossibly beautiful smile that makes me want to dance. Then, he decides to go for the kiss. He moves ever too slow and when he’s this far from her lips she wakes up, but Yoon Sung doesn’t back up. At this point, I was praying for Nana not to ruin the moment. Luckily, she decides she wants the kiss too, so she closes her eyes and clasps her hand waiting for him. Only inches away from her lips, the cell phone of doom rings.

Yoon Sung sighs then he takes the accursed call. After he answers the phone, Yoon Sung looks soulless. He coldly asks Nana to go back to sleep>> Yoon Sung-ah you sure know nothing! How could any girl be able to sleep when she just missed the chance to kiss you TT__TT  Just look at poor Nana’s face: 

Overall: This one is my personal favorite kisses ever and I don’t even care that it’s not a real one. In fact, despite that I know for sure he won’t kiss her, I still get angry every time I re-watch this scene (I can’t even count how many times I've watched it :P)

What we learned from this article:

1. Cell phones can be real mood killers so TURN THEM OFF.

2. Friends are cool to have around. However, when you get your long-awaited chance of kissing your sweetheart, they become such a nuisance. All I'm saying, make sure to LOCK YOUR DOORS if you don't your best friend to ruin your kiss. 

3. If you get caught in an almost kissing position and you need to evade the awkwardness, laugh hysterically,

    drop dead- asleep, or you can always stuff your boyfriend in your closet.

3. Lee Min Ho is jinxed when it comes to kissing. Notice, the guy managed to miss 5 kissing opportunities  in

    4 different dramas. I hope you break this curse in your upcoming drama, Min Ho!
