mz4jun's Favorite Drama Characters of All Time
It’s my first time writing in MDL, so guys, please bear with my poor writing.
When thinking about what I wanted to write, I wanted to start with something broader. Therefore, I am going to uncover my favorite drama characters of all time. While creating this list, I tried not to be biased with actors/actresses playing the roles because as the title suggests, the important thing here is the “fictional characters”and not the actors themselves. Basically, I tried to think of characters who left a great impression on me. This, of course, is based on my experience with Asian dramas, and it is from my point of view. It is in no particular order since I think it is impossible to rank them.
1. Sawada Shin (Gokusen)
Although I said that this list in is 'in no particular order,' the truth is:
He is the longest-lasting male character on the list.
Truth be told, I've been in love with him since middle school. Well, I don't wanna expose my age, but it's been almost 9 years.
Sawada Shin was the first character to introduce me to my love, Matsumoto Jun, as well as Japanese dramas in general. Apart from that, Sawada Shin is perfect in such a way that he is not only clever and smart, but also loyal to his friends, adding to the fact that he is cool with girls--and I have a thing for guys like that. His love for his sister was so touching that I wished I had an elder brother like him (because in reality, I don’t have a brother).
The winning factor is that he has the guts to pursue what he believes in--as in living alone and fighting against his father’s totalitarianism (is it a bit exaggerated?). Plus, like in the end, he so easily confessed his interest in Yankumi.
You have no idea how much I wished for the story to continue from that point onward. He is like the most perfect guy that you could ever meet in your high school life. Also, I love his smile like crazy!
2. Yeo Un (Warrior Baek Dong Soo)
I felt so much pain at the end of this drama even though I expected such an ending (I don’t wanna spoil it!!!). I love this character because of his development throughout the story. I saw his fierceness and how he was so eager to seek revenge since childhood; his friendship with Baek Dong Soo; how he struggled with his conscience in his assassin life, and how he tried to fix his fate and so on.
Although he can be considered as a villain (not really!), in all honesty, I think no one could have hated him. Everyone who loves complicated characters will love Yeo Un. Yoo Seung Ho’s acting was superb. I’ve seen him acting in his other dramas as a child actor as well as an adult, but in this drama, it was PERFECT. It became one of my favorite dramas just because of Yeo Un’s complicated characterization and, of course, the storyline.
Honestly, I didn’t like the actor playing Baek Dong Soo or the female lead. In my opinion, the drama should really change its name. The story was not only focusing on Baek Dong Soo, after all.
He is like someone you might want to risk your life for.
His pain was so real that I wanted to cry with him.
3. Falcon (Bloody Monday)For those who don’t know him, he is the coolest and greatest hacker in doramaland (at least from my experience). There isn’t much to say about him, actually. I just love everything about him; his pursuit of justice, his hacking skills and so on. There aren’t many Asian dramas about a hacker, after all (not even one that I know of, in addition to Bloody Monday). Therefore, the story as well as the character was unique. He is not that perfect. He, in fact, fell for the enemy’s tricks several times and failed to accomplish his missions several times. Nevertheless, I just love him being heroic and energetic.
He is like someone whom every high school student would want to be.
4. Huang Rong (Legend of Condor Heroes 2003)
I grew up watching wuxia series, and it remains to be such a huge part of my life today. In fact, I have quite a few favorite characters from that genre, particularly from Legend of Condor Heroes.
Legend of Condor Heroes is one of the greatest wuxia series based on the novels by Jing Yong, the famous wuxia novelist. I loved the 2003 version drama, actors and actresses starring in it, as well as the story and choreographed action. However, the one that really stood out is Huang Rong played by Zhou Xun, one of my favorite actresses ever.
Introducing Rong Er to you: she is clever and cunning, she may be evil to others but angel to her Jing ge ge. She is so protective of him and would do anything to protect him. I am especially in love with her sense of humor and cleverness. Plus, I like how she is independent.
Ariel Lin also played Huang Rong in 2008 version. I liked that version too, but Huang Rong played by Zhou Xun is just amazing. And her deep voice just said it all.
5. Tang Jun (Queen of SOP)
I might be having a bit of a recency effect here. I finished watching Queen of SOP a few months ago, and I still can’t get him out from my mind.
That’s why I decided to include him in this article. I guess many won’t know this drama as it is a Taiwan-China romance drama. The story is quite typical, an office girl falling in love with a rich handsome guy, but I must say, Tang Jun is much more than a typical rich handsome guy.
He is sweet in a way that he is always thinking of ways to make her happy. He is incredibly cute when he gets jealous of her ex-boyfriend, and when he does some other cute acts. Still, he is very manly, especially when he protects her from others. Thankfully, he is not arrogant like other rich guys in dramas, and he doesn’t have an evil mother/family member either. Plus, he is pretty smart too (I like smart guys). I love how much he likes freedom, wandering around the world and love even more how he developed into a more responsible man for his family.
He is like a one of a kind dream guy for me.
Now I am in love with Tang Jun as well as Zhang Han, the actor who portrayed this role.
I love his smile a lot! It's so refreshing.
The list is not exhausted yet. However, 5 is a great number to stop at, I guess! Hope you guys enjoyed reading my article. Please share any thoughts/comments below.
