Theme: freedom is always more important
I don't think I'm asking too much in a Chinese drama:1- no dubbing please and accurate speech delivery
2- no overkill filter (especially costume dramas)
3- relatable likeable characters (meaning more than one)
4- proper casting (which results in good acting)
5- good pacing in telling an interesting story
6- appropriate costumes and hair design
7- add a little humor so drama is not one note
This list is not long or irrational but not many cdramas can deliver. I left one star because I didn't finish yet but so far director Ding and Yang Zi did not disappoint.

ADDICTIVE, and LIVELY
The first 4 episode got me hooked so deep, I watch it just because I am a fan of Li Xian, have no high hope what I will face... So far, I like how the story flows, feels natural and just the way it is, a preparation in the making... But, just like before I must prepare my self just how the Chinese drama land industry is (a big bang in the first, but a mess after), I don't know if the screenwriter is at fault, or else? Nonetheless, that's just how most historical colossal drama from Chinese was made, that was too bad, because it has so many potentials if you just give the right push. Anywayyyyy, hope this one is just okay would be great, give the right conflicts, add the nice characters development, put a beautiful and logical connection in between, give it a touch of sweet ending, and voila.... a perfect sweet drama to accompany you. Seriously, I really like this drama, hope this would be stable from the beginning until the end. What do I like from here.... let seeee... 1st, I like how the Jiang Chang Yang's character differ from the past character Li Xian had played before. He played lots of grumpy guys with cold demeanor but hiding lots of warm love, but in here I can see more of his smirks and cute dimply smile. It's so refreshing. 2nd, I do like the color grading of the cinematography too, so gorgeous pampering my eyes. 3rd, I do like the story of family dynamic, and their inside drama but I guess the story will get more and more interesting after He Wei Fang got her dreamed divorce. (Can't wait!!!!)
But I do have some complains too, One, I just want to know How the eye make-up from women is done? Why is it have to be like that? Is there no other eye make-up choices? Definitely not necessary, and not complementing anything. Other is, the hair-do, it looks unnatural too much too high too big. the contrast is too much between men and women, there are so many color in the women's face but the men are so pale, so many accessories on women that seems unnecessary and heavy (haha poor the actors for wearing those high and heavy hair). But overall, I still gonna be waiting for this drama to come out everyday at 7pm.
Hope this review will help you all!
Happy waiting for 7pm! <3

I LOVE HER in this role
Usually Yang Zi is a bit of a comedian.....and I like her in those roles. She lands on time and is quick on the back and forth banter. Her facial expressions are always on point, as well. But in this drama, she is mature, serious and handling real world (even currently the world over) issues. Spousal abuse. Women not getting paid what they should. Staying in a terrible marriage and the consequences of it. Lack of respect. Misogyny. Sexual harassment in the workplace. War of the classes. The consequences of war, and who it affects.......cause it 'ain't' the wealthy.I love the story. I even like the love story and I'm not one that likes love stories. Her and her love interest have chemistry. It's slow and cerebral......how real people fall in love. It's sweet, but not overly so. It's mature love and that, to me, is believable.
The costumes are amazing. I love the colors, fabric choices and thought that went into the creation of each dress. I'm a seamstress, and costumes are an important part of historical fiction. I'm thoroughly turned off, if the costumes are satin-y or poorly constructed. The costumes designs of this drama are drool worthy, without the 'cat lady' bling effect. You know the one-- it looks as though someone vomited sequins and glitter all over the front of their dress! Eww.
The makeup too! They held back, and applied it sensibly. The women are gorgeous.....they don't need red lipstick and heavy eyeliner. Their natural beauty really shines through.
Set design is creative and colorful. Music is thoughtful as well. No cringy ballads from actors that cant sing. More traditional and lovely.
Story is wonderful as well.......with a few cheesy lines thrown in, that I've come to love. I grew up with old Chinese martial arts movies and it's the Chinese cheese that keeps me coming back- over the top acting, fight scenes, blood shooting from someone's chest, the blood vomit, the extra villain-y villains. All of it. Love it to bits!
This drama has just enough cheese that makes it nostalgic to me.
LM is adorable, masculine, intelligent, empathetic, vulnerable and grey. Not a complete good guy, but not a villain. Nor is he over-the-top pretty. All the things I want in an on screen love interest.
This is the best one I've watched in awhile. Can't wait for the next episode (just finished ep21).
If your looking for a 'real' love story (slowly paced), decent fight scenes, intelligent dialogue, great acting and anxiety driven plots.....this is a great drama to binge.

falls short of expectations
The plot centers around the life of a young woman navigating the challenges of her personal and professional life in a bustling city. At first, the premise seems promising, with opportunities for rich character development and engaging story arcs. However, as the episodes progress, the narrative becomes increasingly disjointed and predictable. Key plot points feel rushed, and the pacing is inconsistent, leading to moments where I have lose interest. The series attempts to tackle various themes, including ambition, family dynamics, and romance, but often fails to weave them together in a cohesive manner.
One of the most significant shortcomings of "Flourished Peony" is its character development. The protagonist, while initially relatable, becomes a caricature of herself as the series progresses. Her motivations and decisions often lack depth, making it difficult for me to empathize with her journey. Supporting characters are introduced with intriguing backstories, but many of them fade into the background without receiving the development they deserve. This lack of depth leaves the me feeling disconnected from the characters, which is a significant blow to the emotional impact of the story.
The series attempts to explore themes of love, ambition, and self-discovery, but the execution often feels superficial. The moral lessons presented can come across as clichéd and predictable, lacking the nuance and depth that would elevate the narrative. Instead of providing thought-provoking insights, the series often resorts to formulaic storytelling that fails to resonate with me.

weak Plot Development
The premise of "Flourished Peony" is intriguing, centering around themes of love, ambition, and family dynamics. However, as the series progresses, the plot becomes increasingly convoluted and predictable. Key story arcs that could have added depth feel rushed or poorly executed, leaving viewers with a sense of dissatisfaction. The pacing is inconsistent, with some episodes dragging on while others rush through significant developments, making it hard to stay engaged.
While the main characters have potential, their development throughout the series is lacking. The protagonist, portrayed by a capable actor, often comes off as one-dimensional, making it difficult for viewers to empathize with her journey. Supporting characters frequently fall into stereotypical roles, lacking the complexity needed to make them memorable. This absence of character depth results in a disconnect between the audience and the story.
The series struggles to maintain a consistent tone, oscillating between melodrama and light-hearted moments. This inconsistency can be jarring, detracting from the overall viewing experience. At times, the humor feels forced and out of place, undermining the more serious themes the show attempts to explore.
While the cinematography and set designs are visually appealing, they can’t compensate for the shortcomings in the script and character development. Some scenes are beautifully shot, but they often lack the emotional weight needed to make them resonate with viewers. The soundtrack, while pleasant, becomes repetitive and fails to enhance the overall atmosphere of the series.

A fantastic period drama with a gripping story line, high production quality, and excellent acting.
The script is intense, engaging and dares to critically explore deep issues about the role of women in Tang era. History says it is the most civilized feudal dynasty where there is an unprecedented improvement of women's status, and one of the few female-friendly eras in history. But if we really explore it, this "friendliness" is relative, not absolute, and its essence is still a feudal dynasty, even if it is the Golden Era of women's rights in which female emperor Wu Zetian ruled. The creators makes an attempt to not just focus on the plight of women in that era, but also on the division of society into different classes and the inequality of human rights. Through He Weifang's journey they convey a beautiful inspiring story, about an attempt made by a woman who rose from her lowest and blossomed all the way through and gave hope to other women in difficult situations in life.
We follow the main character He Weifang's journey. He Weifang is not a woman with "privileges". She was born into a merchant family who were not considered Nobles and were much lower in the hierarchy. To abide by the agreement reached between her mother and the Liu family for medicine she is married into the higher ranking Liu family. Although she was not accepted by her husband and inevitably suffered from all kinds of treachery and torture in the name of female discipline in the Liu household, she was gentle and obedient just to make her life better. The great rebellion comes in her life when she discovers that her in-laws misused her dowry and fabricated the medicine supposed to cure her mother's ailment. The last draw was when her closest aide gets killed.
Rest of the story seems to be about the challenges she faces when seeking divorce, the great escape from Liu house and her transformation to a strong and determined woman who seizes every opportunity to fight for a way out for herself with her business acumen and wisdom. On episode 8/9 she sets up the Peony business with the help of the Flower Convoy (a righteous minister in disguise) and not only paves the way for herself but also gives hope to a woman in difficult situations in life.
Yang Zi delivers a flawless performance, Li Xian character is very mysterious and interesting, and his acting is very relaxed. Their chemistry and tacit understanding is amazing! Their interactions give comic relief. Miles Wei plays a completely different role here as the ex-husband who you will hate and pity. His acting is amazing! Zhang Ya Qin is good in her role as the County Princess and so are the other support actors.
Sets, costumes, make up, visuals are all top class and in line with the era
Eagerly waiting for the rest of the episodes to air. Highly recommend!

found myself wanting to connect with the characters
"Flourished Peony" had the potential to be a captivating experience, but it ultimately fell short in several areas. The concept of exploring the beauty and intricacies of peonies in a narrative form is lovely, but the execution left much to be desired.
The storyline felt disjointed and lacked a clear direction, making it hard to stay engaged. While there were moments of beauty and insight, they were often overshadowed by pacing issues and a lack of character development. I found myself wanting to connect with the characters, but they felt flat and underdeveloped, which made it difficult to invest emotionally in their journeys.
Visually, the aesthetics were appealing, and the cinematography had its moments, but it wasn’t enough to save the overall experience. The dialogue often felt forced, and the plot twists were predictable, which took away from any potential suspense or intrigue.
In summary, "Flourished Peony" is a missed opportunity that could have blossomed into something beautiful. I’d rate it a 4/10—there are glimpses of potential, but it ultimately fails to leave a lasting impression.

Good Cast and Crew
The casting for 'Flourished Peony' is excellent, though the filming quality can be uneven. The pacing of the narrative occasionally falters, creating moments of disengagement. However, the series boasts truly captivating visuals, particularly the stunning display of flowers throughout the seasons. This visual spectacle, coupled with the exquisite costumes that perfectly complement each character, elevates the production.A significant strength lies in its portrayal of female empowerment. The female protagonist serves as an inspiring role model, demonstrating the importance of self-reliance and hard work. Her journey emphasizes the necessity for women to break free from dependence and forge their own paths. The title, 'Flourished Peony,' aptly reflects the themes of growth, resilience, and blossoming into one's full potential
