Dear Diary (我的巴比伦恋人 - My Babylonian Lover), is a 24 eps rom-com drama that narrates the story of how a diary that was once written by a 12-year-old girl come to life. The 12-year-old girl (Chen Meiru) once fantasizes and wrote a diary about herself as the woman whom the Babylonian prince single-heartedly love and would die for. However, her "diary" became known by everyone in her hometown. Thus, the 12-year-old girl was traumatized and she grew up to become a very closed and serious woman.

This drama is not like any other rom-com drama, it is original and unique. Dear Diary has so many plot devices and themes used harmoniously together. The drama is well-paced and there is not a single dull moment. Dear Diary has many exciting, interesting, and heart-warming plots along the way. Moreover, the drama also transitions seamlessly between comedy, romance, action, and suspense. All in all, the element of fiction and reality are seamlessly interwoven and executed.

The quality of storytelling is very well done, this drama grips you every single episode, it makes you want to watch more and binge the whole drama. Some people might find this drama bizarre and weird (because yes, it is), but when you're watching this, just turn off your brain and enjoy the drama. The drama isn't all about romance and comedy, there is a deep message hidden in it. The drama has some really meaningful dialogues, and the drama also displays tremendous character growth in all characters. In addition, even though there are 3 characters who were technically "fictional characters", but they didn't feel fake or generic, they felt like real people. All the characters are well-dimensioned, it is very well-written. Though there might be some plot holes, the plot holes are forgive-able.

All of the main cast did a very exceptional job. The actors are really commendable for acting delivering their lines without laughing, as there are a lot of scenes that are really hilarious; e.g. drinking from a fishbowl. Moreover, the interactions and chemistry between everyone are also realistically and convincingly portrayed.

The production of Dear Diary is also executed immaculately, the writing, direction, and production team pays close attention to the whole drama that making it a perfect drama!! The production team went to Iraq, Morocco, and Paris to shoot some of the scenes and to accumulate Babylonian artifacts and resources. In addition, the drama also spent 2 years on post-production, with its dubbing and editing. Therefore, believe me, it won't disappoint you. The technical execution of this drama might not be top-notch, but it is interesting and beautiful. It has immersive camerawork for certain scenes and appropriate levels of color grading. Moreover, the high production value is also reflected in the set design, costume, everything is fantastic.

All in all, Dear Diary is a wonderfully produced drama, it has an engrossing plot, impressive cinematography, beautiful writing. Dear Diary will keep you on the edge of your chair, with its comedy, thrills, and suspense playing out at a compelling pace. With it, it deserves more attention and it is definitely one of this year's dark horse.

Plus, I love how each episode ending ends with this statement, "MeiRu, I’m marrying you. We’ll be in a monogamous relationship and I’ll never leave you."

A warm ode to our youth – one day, we will become someone that our past selves can be proud of.

Mental turmoil latched onto me the moment that I attempted to evaluate this drama with a rubric. To claim that this show is close to objectively “perfect” would be awfully far from accurate. But the more that I told myself to be impartial, to judge this drama as fairly as I did every other show that I’ve ever consumed, the more squeamish I got. After all, it's one of the most magical dramas I've ever had the pleasure of watching.

The overarching plot of Dear Diary starts with a woman by the name of Chen Meiru. Like many young and hormonal creatives, she wrote a self-insert love story when she was 12, and paired herself with a handsome and devoted prince to boot. On her 24th birthday, he appears before her very eyes: a buff Babylonian man, wildly proclaiming his love for her. Hilarity ensues as the jaded careerwoman attempts to return to her normal life, haunted by the gorgeous prince, his loyal subordinate, and a beautiful love rival – each of whom she designed under her own pen as a starry-eyed child, but who are now composed of flesh and bone.

On the surface, Dear Diary is yet another kooky fantasy rom-com mess. In a genre teeming with titles, what instantly sets this one apart is that it’s legitimately funny…hmm, nope; “hysterical” is a more fitting term. Not once does it rely on cheap gags. All the jokes fit perfectly with the situation and are delivered impeccably. I had just gotten my wisdom teeth pulled when I started watching this drama, and the amount of pain I suffered due to failed attempts at suppressing my cackling was not trivial. Totally worth it, though. (Side note: some of the jokes may only be effective if you have prior understanding of Chinese culture. I took a look at the official English subtitles and they don’t provide any relevant context to understand these references. Booooo. If you're interested, you can visit my profile for a link to my fan-subbed version, in which I translate and explain these references.)

Is good humor this show’s sole asset? No, no, no. That’s the mere tip of the iceberg. Once you go for a deeper dive, you’ll discover that this show possesses a power that many others can only dream of: logic. Halle-freaking-lujah, it’s not mindless antics! Not only is there a methodical sequence of interesting events, there are actual reasons behind those events. I would like to thank these writers for displaying to their industry peers that “fantasy” is not a synonym for “has no rules.” In spite of a few plot holes (which are inevitable due to production reasons, as I’ll explain in a bit), the overall story is one of compelling, nonstop developments.

As you learn how and why certain events occur, more serious themes emerge. Whereas a great deal of creativity went into the layout of the story, an equal amount of thought went into tying it all back to reality. The fantasy elements become increasingly metaphorical in nature and the initial humor recedes to reveal the characters’ internal struggles. While I adore the comedy, the tone shift is truly brilliant and utilized fruitfully. Savor your joy – the higher your mood flies in the beginning, the more tears you’ll shed when later episodes wrestle you back down to earth.

How do the funny and somber components both work so well? Obviously, the writers and directors put in excellent work. But it would be a severe injustice to not applaud the actors. Across six lead characters (that’s right; six, with each of them bearing equal weight in the story), there’s not a single weak link to be found. They all interpret their roles very seriously, which allows you to immerse yourself into every scene – be it one of comedy or one of tragedy. I’m especially appreciative of the actors and actress playing the three characters risen from Chen Meiru’s diary. These characters would be extremely easy to exaggerate to the point of being awkward caricatures. However, because each actor gave due respect to the role that they played, every character feels real and their reactions suit the situation. Also, special shoutout for Bu Guanjin, who I swear has some of the best line delivery skills in the industry.

For the sake of clarity, I’ll go over the drama’s characters by splitting them into two groups: “human” and “paper,” the former being those in the story who are regarded from the get-go as “real” people, and the latter being those who rose from the pages of Chen Meiru’s journal. These paper characters, Murong Jielun, Ouyang Wenshan, and Jiutian Longnu, all start off as you would expect – horribly cringeworthy. Flat, one-dimensional; the pinnacle of an adolescent girl’s imagination. But, over the course of the story, their growth is the most impactful and satisfying of all. It’s through them that we witness the departure from supposed destiny, and the subsequent importance of taking your future into your own hands.

As for the humans themselves: you have Chen Meiru, Jiang Huizhen, and Duan Shuiliu. Each of them live drastically different lifestyles, but are ultimately as similar to one another as they are to you and me: full of youthful dreams, and also full of doubt. Perhaps we’d expect that them teaching the paper characters about life would be the primary focus. However, what is of more interest is watching them—the “real” humans—find hope within cruel reality by cherishing and loving those fictional, yet genuine paper characters. It’s poetic cinema, I tell you.

At its core, this drama is a tale of growth and self-worth; about overcoming insecurities and reaching for greater heights with the support of those around us. This storytelling is especially valuable for us women in the audience, who need more media in which ladies are permitted to be vulnerable, to be flawed, to be irritable. Of course, this message applies to you; whoever you may be. We all have our moments of weakness. We all have negative memories that hold us back. But through others and through our own self-reflection, we can find happiness.

Alright, so I’ve talked your ears off about all the good points. Then what made me initially waver away from giving Dear Diary such a high score? For one thing, the dubbing leaves a lot to be desired. It is extremely obvious that they recorded over existing dialogue for numerous scenes. I’m sure it was unavoidable, but dubbing will always get me in a huffy mood.

Secondly, and possibly most importantly, the pacing is far too fast. Like, “someone needs to dish this production a speeding ticket”-level too fast. 24 episodes at 20-some minutes a pop? It’s whiplash waiting to happen. In regards to the overall story, the length is tolerable; but as they say, the devil is in the details – the compressed timing creates a good number of plot holes, which leads to clunky development, which in turn harms intricacies in the characters and their relationships. Frankly, I didn’t find it to be a major issue; but the progression definitely doesn’t feel as natural as it could be. Here, I’d like to mention that the producers edited the entire show twice before it could air (due to reasons like our beloved censorship). Twice. Can you imagine how much precious content got cut out in the process? I could cry just thinking about it. Anyways, if the crew is willing to release an extended director’s cut—even if it’s secretly in some kind of drama black market—I might have some pocket money at the ready…just saying.

These issues could prove fatal for any other show, but I’m more than willing to overlook them all for Dear Diary. This is a rare drama where you can truly tell how much care and effort went into making it something of emotional value. You never get a sense that those involved in this production were in it to make mad bank or to revolutionize the Asian drama scene or even to be super dramatic. It’s just here with the modest goal of telling us a fun, soothing story. Whether it be in the realism of the acting, the craftsmanship of the dialogue, filming in Morocco and having the cast learn the Akkadian language for scenes referencing ancient Babylonia – there is no shortage of genuine dedication. There’s something exceptional about witnessing a passion project, bursting at the seams with honesty and sincerity, coming to life upon your screen. It warms my cold, cold heart. It inspires me to be just as heartfelt toward my own life.

While Dear Diary may not be “perfect,” it’s a perfect example of the sentiment that a show need not be flawless in order to receive love from its audience. When a writer cares deeply for her script and an actor his role, a viewer can instinctively feel it. That emotional connection, that soul alone can be enough to make a show into something special. Dear Diary possesses that soul. And I couldn’t be more grateful that the team behind it shared it with us, because it really is something special.

A grand romance demands a grand sacrifice

I was a little speechless after binging this show over 3 days. Not many show affected me this way but it did and I was surprised.
On paper it is a low profile web drama of 24 episodes running about 30mins each. Short by c-drama standard. It started off as a decent rom-com with a dose of fantasy. It centred around characters in a story written by the FL coming to life on her 24th birthday and interacting with the FL and her friends. Lots of zany shenanigans as those fantasy characters tried to adjust to modern life (they were from ancient Babylon). Similar storyline has been used before but the show did a good job drawing us in and keeping our interests. The casting was very good. You don't have to suspend your disbelieve. They hired a number of good actors with mixed heritage and one main character even spoke Akkadian during the entire show and that is respect to the source material.

Around mid show, the tone changed and it became a bit of a thriller with a touch of the supernatural. It was a rollercoaster ride from that point on. The show swung back to romance then back to thriller plus historical intrigue and some light-hearted moments and back again. Yes, it is a bit manic and hectic when you look at it from a distance but if you are still watching by the 2/3 point, you are shipping the CP's and the story would have hooked you.

Speaking of romance, they weren't sugar coated fluff but love that transcended time and the great divide. I have to give the writer full credit for the teleport to Mount Wu running gag. It is next level! The last few episodes are heavy with the feels and the pace finally slowed. A sense of melancholy and reflection coloured the later scenes.

The writing is no doubt a key element of this drama. It is good, surprisingly good for a short drama. It dashed around both time and space but the core promise was always solid. Layers of revelations are peeled away. Yes, it can look messy but the ground work for later development was laid well in advance and it is more about gathering all the threads and pulling at the right time to turn chaos into cohesion.

The ending was bittersweet and not your typical 11th hour miracle. I accept and appreciate that because it would have betrayed the whole narrative and destroy any pretence of logic (but I was torn, damnit). We did get some kind of closure for the protagonists. We can derive some comfort in knowing that they were not forgotten and they are learning to live with the hands they were dealt. There is hope after all.

Production value is good. I heard that it was a labour of love with years of post production. They actually filmed on location in Morocco and Paris which is rare even for big budget dramas.

I'll admit that the transition is not always smooth, there are the odd plot holes and some scenes towards the end were contrived and heavy handed (aka burying the mask) but I'll accept the flaws in exchange for the complete package.
OST was good. I still can't get the opening bars of the theme song out of my head.

This show is not for everyone. The whiplash change in story telling and layered plot might put off or confuse some. If you are expecting a fluffy rom-com or an action thriller then watch no further.

It is a wild ride to be sure so test the water with your toes. Be warned, the water is deep and quite murky. :)

>>>>>P.S. There is a bonus ep.25. It is not an alternate ending but it extended the show beyond the end of ep.24. It provide some extra fan service scenes so if you are happy with the original bittersweet ending then please ignore this episode. Otherwise, it is a must watch for the fans of this show. :D The link to a Chinese only video is the comments section in MDL for this show. Thank you to cyn lynn for the heads-up. :)

Almost perfection 美中不足

Excuse me having to use Chinese characters in the headline, but that is my first thought when I completed the drama. The correct translation for 美中不足 is "a blemish in an otherwise perfect thing" but that sounds kind of negative 😅 Almost perfection sounds nicer. I have really enjoyed this drama, although I'm rating it 8.5 it would still go on my list of Top 10 dramas for the year. Will come back on what are the 'blemishes' that could have made this a perfect story.

What are great and very well done in Dear Diary:
1) Actual/Real sets and training
Production and cast have travelled to Morocco and Paris for the scenes set in Babylonian times and for the scenes in final ep. Crew had really construct an ancient set for the shooting, the 3 actors that belong to Babylonian times had received training and been educated on how people in those times would behave, walked, fought....
2) The dialogues
There are really good lines in this that are reflective on life and love. It somehow reminded me of Il Mare, Bloody Romance but the dialogues in this are much more superior. I have watched this raw, no idea how the Eng subs would be like? Hopefully it managed to keep the same meanings... A lot of the dialogues could be used in our real life, quite similar to The Alchemist and Little Prince (it even quoted Little Prince in a scene).
3) The story
The premise of a 12 yo's fiction story that came alive, how she had wrote the story with love then hated it due to the public humiliation she suffered when her book was accidentally discovered and read out loud in class, how the experience changed her into an anti-social 24 yo woman with OCD..... her emotions and reactions when she first met the story characters (hilarious yet sad too) and realized her story had came alive..... And the friendships!! Especially between Meiru and Zhen Zhen.
4) The casting and acting
This is one of the best casting choices made in a cdrama! Everyone fits their characters so well ❤ And the actors did their best to understand their assigned characters and portrayed them very convincingly.
5) The cinematography
If you read my comments on this page you'd know how impressed I am with this director. Although the cast are perfection, when we look at these 3 couples, they don't give any CP feels at all, they don't look matching. But this director knows the right kind of scenes, angles, etc to make viewers believe in their love. 3 pairs of people who don't look like couples become believable as lovers with his directing.

The "blemishes":
1) Somewhere around the halfway point, story developments and scenes start to feel disjointed. The scenes are awesome! But when linked together felt like there's missing parts. We see the love, the fears and grief between the 3 couples, but there ain't that many scenes that show how they reached this point, this deep love. It gives me a somewhat empty feeling at times, like there's big gaps in-between-- great scenes and dialogues but it felt over-melodramatic because of the missing interactions and developments in the beginning arc. Cast revealed the whole shooting took about 4 months, yet this is only 24 eps of 30 mins each. Hopefully Youku would release the additional scenes that were not used in drama.
2) What is the story theme? I get the feeling this story has a theme and not just "a drama", that it is trying to make a point about something. But that point that it is trying to tell, did not come across clearly enough, end up with a few points that are conveyed quite weakly. About learning to love and live, letting go of the past, learning to forgive yourself.... etc are not conveyed as strongly as it might have intended.
3) Chen Meiru's uncle.... Who is he exactly? How did he know about their stories? It felt like he had been waiting all his life for it to happen.... If the storytelling was better, didn't have the above 2 issues I wouldn't mind not knowing the truth on Uncle, there have been other fantasy productions that had similar unknown characters who know everything but identity unknown.

If you are just starting on this drama and feel put off by the cringe and slapstick comedy, it is only in the initial eps. Hang on until ep 4 or 5 and you would understand why this drama is worth your time. It isn't the greatest in this genre but the heart and sincerity put into the set design, story and acting, are really quite something. Hopefully its original script can make be published into a novel, would like to see the original story prior to the many edits....

A Hot Mess

This is what happens when screenwriters use outlines to put together a script as opposed to a fully flushed out plot with character development and cohesion. This was a huge mess. I understand 24 episodes but they were all over the place. No proper introduction to them and on top of that what was originally believed to be 3 fictional characters out of a diary, ended up being crossed over from Babylonian/Akkadian history. The only reason I didn't drop this like the majority of people I spoke with was because WRC or Richards Wang's character essentially carried the entire show on his shoulders plus the historical and international locations were beautiful. He was the only not over the top personality that honestly played his character without screeching, squeaking, and not making sense. I liked him in The Long Ballad as King of Mobei and he was able to do the same here and believably. Wish he had more screen time in both and I look forward to better roles from him in the future. For all of the insanity during, only one couple had a semblance of a happy ending while the others just matured but had to be heartbroken and separated by thousands of years and a different dimension; a real let down if there wasn't enough. Truly wish I hadn't started watching it. This series is only good for people who like chaos and insanity without a straightforward plot. Otherwise, please avoid.

Unique & Funny to start, but gets more Emotional

Completed - 11/17/2021 - rounding up to 8.0

Surprisingly, I enjoy "Dear Diary" a lot more than I initially thought. I was expecting a fairly low quality and low budget drama, but was pleasantly surprised that the production quality is not good and they filmed at different real locations. Before I watched this drama, I thought this would be a silly, over-the-top drama and I am prepared for it. But after the first episode, it's obvious that there's a more tragic undertone to all of this silliness. It is quite an emotional drama, and might be a tad melo towards the end.

What I Enjoy:
1) A unique story started by a 12-year old when she was day dreaming about a grand love story. I was a hopeless romantic myself when I was young (maybe still am.. LOL), so I can totally understand the obsession of wanting to have an amazing star-crossed love story. Instead of saying she's writing a diary, it's more like writing a romance novel. I love how this all started, and how a tragic event changes the FL's life and her view of the world. I enjoy the character growth and how she comes to accept herself and that she deserves to be loved.

2) Hot guys in Hot outfits. I have never seen our male lead, Rhydian Vaughan in any drama or movie. It shouldn't come as a surprise that he's a good-looking guy, with sexy eyes and a hot body. I apologize if I sound like a cougar. But he's one of the main reasons for me to watch this drama. He looks incredible in everything he wears (or not wear), whether it's in his Babylonian armor or his modern casual looks and suits. I never find Wang Rui Chang to be particularly attractive, but he does look really cool in this drama. He is so tall and lean that he makes all the outrageous and over-the-top suits look stylish.

3) Sismance. Our two female leads have very different personalities, but have been supportive of each other since they're 12 years old. I love scenes when they were young and writing the diary. It's so cute to see the young ZhenZhen dancing around and reading the romantic parts of the diary. Their friendship remains strong through all the ups and downs in this drama. There's no jealousy between the two.

What I don't enjoy:
1. The pacing of the first half of the drama is pretty good. But towards the last 1/3 of the drama when it becomes more serious and emotional, the scenes become very repetitive with too many flashbacks.

2. Cheesy love lines. I know it's the writing of a 12-year old, but I can't help but feel that once the three couples got together, they forgot how to talk like normal people. Their lines to each other become too cheesy for my taste. It's really like they are straight from a young adult romance novels.

3. Underdeveloped romance. This is a pretty short 24-episode drama. But if you take away the beginning and ending credits, the recap of the previous episode, then you are only left with about 30 mins per episode. I feel that there isn't enough time to properly develop 3 main romance storylines. The romance of Jiang Hui Zhen and Ou Yang Wen Shan is the weakest of the three. They started out as such a cool couple, but there isn't enough time to tell their story properly.

Other observations:
1. Fan service - there are many shirtless scenes of Rydian Vaughan, and I am not complaining
2. Acting is pretty decent all around, esp. Bu Guan Jin. I would say the weakest of the bunch is Rydian Vaughan.
3. Why are they fixing a broken mirror? How Ou Yang Wen Shan knows so much more about the modern world than Mu Rong Jie Lun and the Dragon Lady?
4. Dubbing is inconsistent and sometimes totally out of sync.
5. I didn't expect to cry so much!!

Surprise of this year for me...one special series which touched me deeply

When I first watched the trailer, I was surprised how theatrical it was, how can you connect Babylon and modern times. So I watched first episode when they aired and I was hooked. Many people stopped watching after the first 2 episodes, because they were hilarious. But truth is, they are really hilarious and so funny...let us see "In my presence, not a strand of Chen Mei Ru's hair will drop to the ground" "I don't fall for his money, it's his charm of scheming, it melts me" I had to roll my eyes and smiled from ear to ear...
BUT than next episode aired and the hilarious funny story changed to story with many deep emotions and problems, which stayed hidden for a long time...time to heal is what the characters needed to change to live for real, to accept who they are and what they wish. And when you think how the story will continue and you know you think you know all, than next episode airs and you get fully new direction, which changes the life of all 6 characters.
Is there a male and female lead? At the beginning I would say yes...with time I would definitely say NO. This story has no leads, three couple, three love stories and everyone of them is wonderful and unique and although all are fully connected and interacting with each other in beautiful way.
I cried, smiled, cheered with all of them and fell in love with these amazing characters and also with the actors, who did awesome job. At the end of the show, I was really happy I could see the love the actors put into these characters.
The quality of the drama is wonderful, great shots, camera work, also the colors were beautiful, costumes and the style fitted the drama very well. The OST is also very touching and I am listening to it daily.
Would I have changed something? Yes the end, I heard there was different finale too...I would love to see that one more. Although the end was well done...it didn't give me what I wanted from a finale. This is the reason the story got 8.5/10 points from me. I would so love to read the original script..
At the end, I have wonderful comforting feeling in my heart and am happy to count this drama to my favourites now. It touched me deeply and maybe healed some of my own little wounds on its way.

Way worth watching over standard story lines

Under the radar gem. Creative story line with seamless story telling. There's no "filler" episodes or useless characters taking too much screen time.

It started out with lots of laughs. OTP acting completely worked with the story. Kudos to the actors who did an amazing job. This is where a good script can be amazing with the perfect casting.
The characters started simple and very 1 sided love without reason. Of course! it's from a 12 year old mind. How deep can the characters be? As they become self aware, each relationship becomes more meaningful.

Ost is fitting with the beautiful scenes:
Like the 24 year old Chen Mei Ru facing the 12 year old self.
The moment Chen Mei Ru screams out all her insecurities
Memorable scenes that can really hit you with a wave of emotions

Great Drama!

a disaster

The beginning was great, the plot was amazing too. However as the drama progressed it got worse. By the end everything was illogical and in shambles. ending is weird asf. I had lots of hopes and expectations for this drama but I'm very disappointed with the outcome

There were better endings they could've used, i mean in an extra ep both our FL and her Bestie find ouyang and murong look alikes who have no memories of their past life and encounter with the 2 girls. but it isnt the ideal ending.

You may ask yourself, should I watch this? I am here to tell you YES YOU SHOULD.

This is a complete package of a drama. Fluff! Angst! Hilarity! What was that! Noooo!!!! Yes!!!!!

I had no idea when I started what I thought was a creampuff would become a beautifully balanced eight course meal. It slid gently & smoothly into emotional complexity.

Every single person involved in this production can stand tall & know they produced a work of art. This was completely charming, on every level. Many small touches that showed care.

Every child's brain is creative we need to nurture it.

Wonderful dram..
A 12 years old imagination is written in a dairy
And it becomes alive.
Such a beautiful way to present it.
The beauty of the drama is
It is presented in the view of a preteen and teen girl.
Viewers should watch with the rosy glasses of a teenager and how it would effect the present situation. How the adults deal with it.
How to solve the grudged
I loved the all the leads
1st
2nd
3rd...
The loyalty
The friendship
Love
Every thing was beautiful.
Even the ending..
Such a reality..
I would definitely recommend every one can watch it.
And especially the young would love it.
In these days of just watching the phone..
It would wake up the writer skills in the young.
They should at least try to write a story..
We used to...
All nonsense
Getting mixed up.
But that was fun..
Hope this drama gives inspiration.
