Hidden Gem of Romcom

The reason I start this drama because I like Nana acting from The Swindlers, I think she's one promising idol turned actress. And for Park Sung Hoon I know him from Psychopath Diary, Falsify and Gonjiam Haunted Asylum. Both of them haven't act as main role before and the theme of this drama is politics which normally not my cup of tea, so I start this drama with Zero expectations.

Honestly the first 2 episode is kinda boring, but I keep going for the sake of Nana acting (she's really all out as Se Ra) Thank God I didn't stop as the story gets better and continue captivating with fast paced, no dragging problem. I'm really glad I find this hidden gem drama, it's so long since I find drama which I am looking forward to watch each week.

Chemistry both ML are overflowing, they act like lovey dovey couple, and they kissed like real life couple (which i find rare nowadays, most of actress just stand still and stiff when being kissed).
And I like how they show affection not only in Drama but through interaction in personal Instagram! Where else we get to see skinship from actors in their personal instagram without being shy or afraid of negative comments lol.

Actually I feel the ending kinda bit rushed, but I still give it overall full marks consider I really enjoyed all Sera and Gong Myung relationship.

I definitely treasure this drama and will rewatch it in the future for all the sweet moments of Sera and Gong myung ❤️

I'll be honest, I decided to watch Into the Ring because I heard Nana was starring as the main role. As my first Nana drama, I did not know what to expect, and let me just tell you that I was shocked. I went from watching because of Nana to continuing to watch because of the amazing cast, story, and characters.

Story:
Politics is a genre that I never mind watching. As someone personally interested in the matter, I am always up for a political drama. But with drama's, I usually find the political side either lacking or too hectic. For Into the Ring, I saw a perfect balance, which I loved a lot. I loved how it was not obvious how every issue would turn out, and I love how each politician was portrayed. I found myself laughing multiple times, and even shedding a few tears here and there. For me, there was a perfect balance of everything, and nothing went overboard.

Characters:
The thing that made me love the drama the most was no doubt the characters and the relationship between them. Starting off with the leading lady, Goo Se Ra. From the first episode, I already loved Goo Se Ra. I loved how passionate she was and how she never gave up. I was happy to watch a character that would keep trying instead of breaking down and cry when things don't go her way. The leading man, Seo Gong Myung, was another character I cherished dearly. I loved how we got to see how Gong Myung transition as he starting helping Se Ra. Which speaking of, Se Ra and Gong Myung were such a cute couple to watch. I loved every scene they were in, even before they starting dating. No doubt one of my favorites couples in kdramaland. For other characters, Yoon Hee Su and Kim Min Jae were two characters that I could never decide whether I like them or not. Despite my personal feelings, I think they were good characters and brought a lot to the drama. Cho Maeng Duk, the "villain," was another interesting character to watch. Although his character infuriated me multiple times, I do think he was a great character with how he was set out to be. I loved the relationship between Se Ra, Han Bi, Woo Young, and Ja Ryong, which speaking of Ja Ryong, he stole so many scenes he was in! Overall, all the characters stood out and made the drama what it is. I also applaud all the actors, especially Nana and Park Sung Hoon. They portrayed their characters flawlessly and I couldn't imagine anyone taking on those two roles.

Other:
As someone who took a film class for my senior high school year, I'm all too familiar with camera angles. From the first episode, I'll admit it was weird seeing camera angles I've never seen before, but after a few episodes, I grew to love them. I thought the angles complemented what was happening very well, and I think it was an interesting addition. Personally, I wouldn't change anything about them, as I cannot imagine this drama without those fascinating angles.

Final Thoughts:
Into the Ring is no doubt one of my favorite dramas of the year and one of my favorite dramas of all time. Every week, I found myself counting down to a new episode, and when I saw one had been subbed, I would immediately stop what I was doing and watch it. I hope people don't ignore this underrated gem because of the political side and instead give it chance. If you're hesitant to watch this drama, I'd say go for it. You never know, you could be pulled in by the characters, plot, relationship, or everything wonderful this drama has to offer.

Kindness Wrapped in a Warm Hug

This drama is near perfect - a fact made even better because I went into it truly knowing nothing about it so the surpise was better AND that it's written by a completely new writer. The breath of fresh air it brought to the kdrama world is something else!

Goo Se Ra is the obvious highlight of the series - Nana plays her earnestness and recklessness and kindness to perfection. Se Ra has a huge heart and is so soft but never ever lets herself be walked over by anyone. What an amazing female character. I dare anyone not to fall in love with her laugh.
Gong Myung is her perfect love interest - the brains to her heart. He's kind of awkward and blunt but so sincere and extremely loyal. Together they are literally one of the softest couples who so so obviously like each other as much as they love each other.

Just watching them makes you realise how many supposed romances really miss that important part of just having the leads enjoy each others company. They are equals in every sense of the word, protective of each other, so adorable to watch and have shot all the way up to be one my favourite OTPs ever!

The extended cast is amazing - particularly Se Ra's friends, our wise-beyond-years kid neighbour and her fellow politicians who are all so memorable whether its because you hate them, laugh at them or are conflicted over them. Hee Soo in particular was a really interesting grey character and just another great female character in a whole cast of them.

The through-line throughout the series is so important too. In the most basic sense it's about politics sure, but mostly it's about always having hope for a better future, never giving up in the face of long odds and making sure to stand up for those who cannot stand themselves.

Special shout-out to the director! The angles and wideshots in the drama made it one of the most unique watches of 2020 and it deserves to be on everyone's best-of-year lists, whether it comes into rewards or not.

Go watch! You won't regret it! There's truly nothing out there like this.

Honestly this was one of the better dramas this year. The story was refreshing and sorta original: strong female joins politics for selfish reasons at first but then decides to take a stand and make a change, no matter how many times she falls she never gives up and stands up again. Many Kdramas right now are full of cliches,m and repeating story lines but this one wasn't.

Another thing that was refreshing was that SeRa and Go Myung, stay together since they get together. They work as a powerful team to bring down the corruption in their city and in the end they manage to beat it no matter how many hardships they face. Also the actors were so natural and comfortable together those kisses: wow!

Plus the takedown of the villain at the end is one of the best, I kinda even felt a little bad for him, just a tad lol.

YET

Aside from those positives I just listed, I really struggled with this drama. I had huge problems with the lead characters while yes the characters go on their journey of development I couldn't connect with them in the end. it was just they were so exaggerated in one end of the spectrum at first then boom change that I really didn't feel SR & MY growth.

I also felt like the story was too boring at times. It was a drag to watch the last few episodes. I noticed that I just finished it out of obligation not really because I wanted to.

It's not a bad drama, as many enjoyed it, it just wasn't for me . Like I said I guess I couldn't get past those negatives at the beginning to really enjoy it.

The soundtrack wasn't memorable imo, and neither was the supporting characters. Aside from SeRa's friends and family I found all of the other supporting characters annoying.

One thing I did enjoy though, was how the writing showed the struggle many women go thru when entering into politics not just in Korea but all over the world imo. For that reason it was important for Into the Ring to be made.

Overall I give this a 7.0 for the reasons I mentioned. I probably won't be rewatching this but for those who enjoyed it by all means do. Maybe some can see more of the positives rather than the negatives.

Surprisingly fresh with real life characters

Okay so apart from the ML's one drama (Psychopath Diary) I haven't seen any other dramas by either of the leads. Honestly, I started watching this drama while I was waiting for the weekly episodes of Its okay to not be okay and Backstreet Rookie. Hence I began with zero expectations or idea about story, lead actors, reviews.

This is such an underrated gem of a drama. So many of the 2020 big actor dramas have been kind of disappointing or not really left a lasting impression. However, this drama and its main characters leave a mark and I was sad to have the drama end.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS DRAMA. One of my most favourite in 2020 and will also make it to my All-time favourites. The acting is so fresh, goofy yet natural. The comedy is not forced, great flow of storyline with perfect transition from one plot to another. While having the element of politics this drama is not over-the-top with confusing political sub-plots and schemes. The romance part is also great and I liked the fact that the FL takes matters in her hands most of the time while dealing with their relationship. ML is good in supporting the FL and yet not overbearing as some other K-drama ML characters. A special mention about the 'camera angles' which some people might find unsettling but you get used to it and in fact it adds an interesting storytelling facet especially in the comic scenes.

I urge everyone to watch this drama for its story, acting, comedy, romance, politics and slice of life vibe. Its a must watch of 2020.

Encapsulates all the lovable aspects of Korean dramas

Into the Ring is built on the solid foundation of its excellent writing, and it endears itself to the viewer with each and every episode. Although it is missing the typical ingredients for commercial success (e.g. top-tier actors, veteran staff), Into the Ring continuously challenges us for our attention and respect, much like the Female Lead. There is just enough romance, comedy, and drama for a well-balanced drama viewing experience just shy of perfection.

Story:
The award winning merit of the newcomer Moon Hyun Kyung’s screenplay is undeniable. The diverse characters and dynamic relationships are a highlight. Consider these two side characters - a manchild who earns his elected position with his daddy’s money and a working mother who refuses to “sacrifice” either her personal or professional life. The relationship between them and the main leads is hilarious (like when the FL turns the manchild into a whimpering puppy with her assertiveness).

Even the political setting delivers laughs as we witness the ridiculousness of each politician’s pettiness. ITR transitions from this comedy to heartwarming romance to drama seamlessly. Scenes are often layered with all three, which keeps the pace refreshing and the story engaging. The drama’s journey is consistently pleasant from beginning to end, and the careful and deliberate screenwriting is what makes it all possible.

Acting:
My mixed feelings about the main cast changed quickly with Into the Ring. For instance, I know Nana for her kpop career with After School rather than her filmography, and the general attitude towards idol-turned-actor is lukewarm. However, Nana exceeds expectations not just with her comedic timing and romantic chemistry but with her nuanced portrayal of empathy towards others. Park Sung Hoon actually appears with Nana in Justice, which I did not watch. I did watch Psychopath Diary where I found his acting uncannily funny. To see PSH in a completely different character is eye-opening and impressive.

Yoo Da In’s character is surprisingly nuanced for what some may consider a “side” character, but YDI’s acting ability is clearly at the level of “main role” actors. I remember Han Joon Woo from his great but small role in Be Melodramatic. Unfortunately, it is a similar case in ITR where he plays an interesting character which does not receive much screen time for a “main role”. Veteran actor Ahn Nae Sang adds another quality appearance to his long filmography.

Music:
Compared to the strengths of the story and cast, the music is not as critically noteworthy for Into the Ring. The subdued backing tracks are a safe choice, a mix of kpop and ballads. The music is actually a good parallel to the overall drama, which is excellent in its strengths but not quite a masterpiece in its entirety. (One last comment - I am a sucker for OSTs sung by main leads though)

Rewatch Value:
As I happily followed along with the weekly episodes of Into the Ring, I did not envision such a high overall rating because of a lack of some jaw dropping scene or enthralling plot line. Instead, ITR makes its appeal piece by piece, and its beauty is fully appreciated when considering the entirety of the drama. After 32 episodes, I can confidently recommend Into the Ring as a solid romcom in a relatively dry 2020.

Original and funny

Originally I avoided this show because I disliked the storyline. The idea of watching a drama that revolved around a bunch of backstabbing politicians sounded boring. But since the ratings were high and the reviews said it was light and funny I decided to go ahead and watch it. And I’m glad I did. Even though the story does revolve around politics they don’t overdo it with angst or go too crazy. This drama does a great job of getting you all worked up over a situation but then easing the tension with some great comedy. I also liked that nothing was drawn out too long and whatever got you upset gets resolved in a reasonable amount of time. This is a true romantic comedy that stays true to its genre without ever turning into a melodrama.

As for the romance, it’s woven throughout the drama and it’s sweet but it’s never the main focal point of the show. There’s lots of real kisses and skinship and this couple has some amazing chemistry. It’s not a really lovey dovey romantic show though. But since the romance isn’t the main focus there are some great benefits. There are no love triangles, no evil parents opposing the couple, and no breakups.

It’s just a really cute funny drama that focuses on the little people in this world and shows how they can accomplish so much in their lives if they just put their mind to it and try a little harder. It also exposes the deep corruption in politics and shows just how far some people will go to in order to maintain their powerful positions. But despite the deep message, the drama stays surprisingly light funny and sweet. It’s a definite must watch in my book.

Good Enough

" Into the Ring " is a pretty fun drama.

It is character driven, with a quirky, dynamic leading lady who dominated every scene she was in. Nana did a superb job with her character and she is one of the best surprises of this year. She pulled Goo Se Ra off masterfully and without overdoing it. The rest of the cast did a great job as well.

As for the actual story, it combined comedy, romance and politics in a beautiful mix that was entertaining and not overbearing. The romance was realistic, subtle, as it didn't take time off the actual story, and it did help that the couple had chemistry. The comedy, in addition, was just enough, mainly produced by the character. Finally, the politics, with the corruption cases, were pretty intense, without being too complicated, confusing or tiring to follow.

However, one thing that the drama didn't handle well, apart from the odd camera work with the high angles and close ups, was the last episode. It was rushed, partial and just not what one should expect from a drama that was pretty steady up until then.

So, overall, nine out of ten.

this is one of the best 2020 K-Drama

In terms of political genre, this one is not the typical dark political side with serious story, this one is much lighter with lots of funny and comedic side, yet still have a deep meaning behind it, which does impress me.

I love both main leads, they have such a GREAT CHEMISTRY, you will definitely love them! their acting is really good

the OST is good as well, especially when you have the main leads singing duet together

this will be go-to drama when you need a bit of lighter story with well-made chemistry cause i LOVE both MAIN LEADS so much.

If you are looking for a serious drama about cut-throat politics, this is definitely not for you. 'Into the Ring' is a quirky and goofy drama about a woman in her late 20s, who decides to run for a spot in District People's Council just because it pays well and you only have to work for 90 days in total. That sounds like a great plan for Goo Se Ra aka the queen of complaints, who doesn't have a stable career or income and so begins her journey to the land, where she has to represent citizens and constantly deal with corrupt politicians while also maintaining her personal relationships.

I've always been interested in politics, so when I read the description of this drama, I was instantly drawn to it and I couldn't wait for it to finish airing so I could finally watch it. And I have to say, that I wasn't disappointed. At first, Goo Se Ra seemed like your typical annoying FL, who will make you constantly roll your eyes, but pretty soon she proved herself to be a strong female hero, even an icon you might say. She's surely not the smartest cookie in the jar, she makes questionable decisions and her moral compass is not always pointing north, but despite that, you can't help but like her, because she's only being herself. On the other hand, we have Seo Gong Myung, a civil servant, who is cold, critical of his peers and always does everything by the book without much care for others. These two characters couldn't be more different, which makes their interactions funny to say the least. We also see Se Ra's family, her friends, council members and a bunch of other characters, who appear from time to time. Sometimes it's hard to keep track of all these different personalities, but I have to say, that supporting characters are not in this show just to be here, they also have their distinct storylines albeit there's not much focus on them.

The cinematography is also interesting, since this drama is shot a bit differently from others. I think, there's a specific effect, used during filming, which gives this show a unique perspective. Personally, I liked it. In addition to that, I have to mention the OST, which included truly beautiful songs and fit the scenes perfectly. And the acting was believable. I haven't seen anything with Nana before, but I really liked her in this role. As for Park Sung Hoon, I've seen him play a serial killer in 'Psychopath Diary' and after seeing this, I admit, that he has an incredible range. I also really liked actors, who played Se Ra's friends: Shin Do Hyun, Kim Mi Soo and especially Choi Go, that kid is amazing.

I think this drama is greatly underrated and underappreciated, so I want to encourage those, who enjoy funny, heartfelt, romantic dramas with peculiar and unique plot, to watch this one and decide for yourselves, if it's worth your time. I certainly think that it is, but that's just me :)
