Freedom, youth, love... nothing like that! Police school is hell!
Shimura Teppei and his friend Yuichi made a pact as children to become police officers. Now a young man, Shimura attempts to enter the police academy. On the day he is to enter, hijinks ensue and he ends up being late. However, a female officer sends him to the "S" class, where he finds his friend Yuichi. Later, they find that the "S" class stands for "substitute" -- that is, the class for those who didn't pass parts of the exam. Yuichi struggles and eventually leaves.

Beginners! reminds me a lot of Police Academy--a bunch of misfits who want to become police officers and are looked down upon by others for being unconventional, yet they conquer the odds against them.
Taipi shines here already. His character is very hilarious, even from the outset when he sings a song while riding a motorcycle.
Overall, this episode was good. We are introduced to the characters as well as informed about why this class is "special". I can't wait to see where this goes.
