Short summary - quite disappointed with the drama. I am probably in the minority here, but please, it is just my personal opinion. Was really hyped up for this, as I have heard so many positive reviews about this show being an epic love story, heart wrenching and brilliantly scripted. If anything, I only liked the first half of the story and decided to mainly watch this because of the good reviews, and because I am always interested in stories about North Korea. This drama was borderline inaccurate once it comes to storytelling about the "hermit kingdom" (not sure whether the screenwriters can can go ALL IN ACCURATE about the country, knowing that they have tense relations with the other Korea). That is what probably ticked me off the most. Additionally, I thought that the acting was a bit immature too, especially for a TV show with such an intense plot. Although I liked the OST a lot, and that's probably the only thing I'm taking away from this drama.

I don't get it. I just don't. This writer only has one idea, star-crossed lovers and that's it. Every show I've seen from her has been very similar and frankly, very cheesy and overdramatic. To be honest, this didn't start off badly, I liked the characters and it just felt like it would be a fun show. Well, I was wrong. The amount of ridiculousness that happened is just shocking to me. Soooooo much unnecessary drama in the last part of the show, I was rolling my eyes in almost every scene. Some scenes that were supposed to be sad were so cheesy and ridiculous that they made me laugh. I'm sad that this was so bad because I really liked the leads but I don't think I felt their love as much as I was supposed to. They just kept staring at each other for some reason and I don't know about most people, but if I'm madly in love with someone I don't wanna just stare at them, I also wanna touch them and hug them if I haven't seen them in a long time or if I think I'm never gonna see them ever again. The second leads were lacklustre to me. Their story didn't feel believable and I just didn't really feel the chemistry + that whole drama at the end. Yawn. I think me and this writer just don't mesh. I hated You Who Came from the Stars and I had pretty much the same feelings about it as I do about Crash Landing on You. The main plot is literally almost the same in both dramas and also in the writer's other drama, Legend of the Blue Sea, which oddly enough I enjoyed more than the other two.

Crash Landing on You was the best kind of weekend drama to get addicted to. It's a rom-com about an officer from North Korea and a business mogul from South Korea, and as expected with a North vs South storyline there's also action and melodrama. I wanted to watch this drama because of Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin, two actors who starred in two of the very first KDramas that got me addicted to KDramas in the first place, and they did not disappoint. This drama totally gave me an old school drama feeling that I miss sometimes. I was far from impressed by the beginning but as the drama went on I became more and more excited about each new episode. I do think the story was definitely flawed, but what I loved most were the memorable characters. This is the kind of escapism drama that is perfectly imperfect entertainment.

Obviously the chemistry between Son Ye Jin as Se Ri and Hyun Bin as Ri Jung Hyuk is one thing that this drama gets absolutely right. This is the kind of couple that makes you laugh and cry, and whether they are having cute banter or dodging bullets I was always rooting for them. Yes, their relationship is way over the top and even sappy at times, but it works so well. Captain Ri's straightfaced swag and Se Ri's extreme confidence played well off of each other, and I loved that Se Ri was a strong character and not just a victim passively waiting for a savior. They make a lot of corny moments work because they are just so good. Se Ri is also in the classic "chaebol" role while Jung Hyuk gets the makeover (a definite switch from the Hyun Bin I'm used to seeing in dramas), so even with a strong military theme, the women characters are just as strong.

Then we have the rest of the cast that is filled with great performances. Two surprising favorites were Seo Ji Hye as Seo Dan and Kim Jung Hyun as Goo Seung Jun. Seo Dan's bitter arrogance and Seung Jun's playboy charm were great, and I loved watching their characters' growth and their unexpected bond. At first, they just seemed like two annoying villainous characters but they soon became two of my favorites in the show. Then there are Captain Ri's fellow soldiers (#squadgoals) and neighbor wives (frenemies turned bffs) who are not only hilarious but were all characters I genuinely cared about. I also liked Seo Dan's aunt and uncle (who are so different from their roles in Parasite) and Se Ri and Jung Hyuk's moms. These characters had a lot of funny moments but also some touching moments that actually made me tear up quite a few times. The North Korean characters were definitely way more interesting than the South Korean characters, mainly Se Ri's family, who I thought were pretty cliché. Greedy siblings fighting over who will take over the family business is probably the most overused KDrama trope, and they weren't very interesting aside from helping to push that part of the story along. I also wasn't too fond of the main villain, who although he was effective he was very one-note.

The story did have a great pace and that's impressive since each episode is well over an hour. Most of the episodes balanced all the different genres well. The only two episodes that dragged for me were the first one, and the last one. I was honestly disappointed in the ending, even though it did do a good job of not leaving things unresolved. I felt like it took an unnecessary extra melodramatic turn then dragged out the endings with flashbacks and slow scenes that lost the show's momentum. Still, even with the slow ending, I still enjoyed the drama as a whole.

There's also a small musical element in this drama but it wasn't very strong. I honestly can't even remember the melody of Captain Ri's song. The rest of the music was over the top or just ok.

Would I watch this again? Maybe. As entertaining as it was anticipating new episodes each weekend, I'm not sure if the story is the kind I want to binge-watch again any time soon. I also think the plot loses all suspense which would make some parts of the story seem slower, especially with such long episodes. I would rather just rewatch parts that I like, but there aren't even specific scenes that I can think of wanting to see again. The characters would be my main reason for ever watching again.

Overall, this is a great classic-style drama. I was all in for the fish out of water/opposites-attract love story, and I liked the idea of being away from the comforts of the south and ending up finding real support and friendship in the north. If you are willing to embrace the tropes, the melodrama, the abundance of coincidences, obnoxious product placements, the cheap special fx, and silliness you will get to see an epic love story, beautiful scenery, some cool action scenes and cliffhangers, and more than a few moments likely to get you in the feels. This drama won't make my personal favorites list but I understand all of the high ratings. For Hyun Bin fans this is a must-watch. I am also rewatching King 2 Hearts now... don't worry that there's anything similar, there isn't, but I do like how both marry humor, action, and suspense with a great love story. Watching this drama made me want to watch that drama again (one of my old school favorites).

There really is a lot that makes Crash Landing on You worth watching. I related to the drama obsessed soldier big time while watching this. Don't let my lack of perfect 10s or 9s dissuade you, I was bored with a lot of the current on-air dramas I've been watching and this finally took me out of that slump. I'm glad I embraced the expected tropes and enjoyed the unpredictable ride.

This drama was great from the beginning. The actors are all amazing from the ML to the support characters. The story is full of comedy, romance, and drama. I was not familiar with either of the main leads before, but I am definitely a fan now. BIn Hyun and Son Ye Jin were awesome. There was great chemistry between them. The writer is generous with the comedy relief during those dramatic and intense times, which I greatly appreciated. I thought the ending was fine. It could have been better, but it was a happy for the main couple. I would watch this again.

Right off the bat, let me start off by saying this was the best show after watching so many disappointing ones in 2019. This show has finally come to an end and I am left with a plethora of emotions. I don't even know how to write this review without bursting into an unintelligible babble. It's my first time writing a review and for good reason.

CLOY was one of the most addicting dramas I've watched in a long, long time. I'm not the kind of person who gives a straight 10 to any drama. Also, i'm not the kind of person who watches dramas as they are airing. I like to wait until the whole show is out. But this drama was *very* different.

When i learned about the show, i wasn't too interested in it, even though the plot sounded kinda reminded me of DOTS. But i started watching it after the 4th episode aired, and trust me when i say this: I WAS HOOKED! Every single episode got me on the edge of my seat (literally and figuratively) as i was so eager to watch the next episode (hi Hyun Bin).

I LOVED the plot! The plot was a great mix of melodrama with the perfect amount of romance and comedy. I liked how this wasn't the cliche of the male lead being super rich and cocky and rough, and the girl being poor and soft. I liked how, the guy was innocent and the girl was strong. That's not to say that this was the most perfect and original plot i had heard of, but all the other things totally outdo the minute imperfections. I would've liked it better if the second couple was given a bit more screen time.

Cast and acting wise, i can't think of any actors who could've played the main (and lead) roles better than the original casting. Son Yejin and Hyun Bin had the kind of chemistry that just made your heart pound out of your chest. Let me take a moment to actually talk about how sweet and handsome and sexy and cute Hyun Bin is in this drama! oooohh I just CANNOT take it (but i want it). Moving on, the supporting actors contributed well to the positives of CLOY. Seo Jihye and Kim Jung Hyun made a great couple and i was rooting for them the whole time. But as i mentioned earlier, i really wanted more of them. Seo Dan's mother and uncle were in the Academy Award winning movie "Parasite", (which i realized a bit too late) and i really do commend them on their acting.

I don't really like a ton of OSTs and so, don't usually pay too much attention to them. But the OSTs were actually pretty decent in this show.

All in all, CLOY was EXCELLENT! Although it had those minute imperfections, it only helped the show seem more perfect in my eyes! It has definitely found a way into my list of favorites and it sure ain't leaving anytime soon! i would recommend this show to anybody who's contemplating. You have to watch it right now or you might seriously regret not doing so later! I don't even know why you are even contemplating is the first place! Seriously watch this NOW!!

The show started off amazing, and very interesting, but around ep 8 or 9, it started to go downhill. And yes this was before they switched to South Korea. Okay I sort of understand why people rated it 9.1 but at the same time I don't. At first it was excellent, then stated to have many flaws that I couldn't look past at.

STORY
the story was a captivating idea. The love interest was interesting. And I enjoyed the couple, however, I wasn't really emotionally attached to any of the characters. Both leads were amazing, and so was the rest of the characters. But I didn't really get into their chemistry. It was THERE, I wasn't emotionally connected to it if that makes sense. Maybe because this is my first time watching them

THE ABSURD STORYLINE OF DEATH
Both characters have faced death like how many times????? A lottttt..... At one point hey are about to die, then they come back to life, then the same thing happens again, they don't die, they face death again, then they don't ie again.

UNBELIEVABLE ROMANCE
If you really love someone, and you see them after such a long time, are you just gonna stand there? I understand you might be shocked. But are you just gonna give them a hug?It doesn't make sense to me. I wanted so much more from the romance.

RIDICULOUS SECOND CHARACTER LOVE STORY
Everybody seems to be in love with the second leads storyline. And I'm still wondering what people see in those two? I felt nothing from them. Their storyline is ridiculous. The girl is an unlikable character, the boy is not bad, I actually liked him. But I don't really understand how they "fell in love" I actually thought a love story between him and Se-ri was more interesting

THE ENDING
I can't even find the words to describe the ending. Just totally terrible

OVERALL
Disappointing kdrama, started off good, ended up meh! Thank goodness I'm done watching it! Don't think I'll ever watch again. Not sure if i would recommend it, but be prepared! And I don't think anything in this drama will stick with me.

Just looking at the overall rating I know I'm against the grain here so I'll just keep my reasons for a low score in a simple list format so if any of you have similar tastes to mine you'll know whether you want to give this drama a chance.
1. The beginning half remains brilliant. Fast-paced, great cast, fluttering romance, mystery. A good dose of everything we love in a kdrama.
2. The North Korean squad and the village wives are both amazing from the start and remain amazing til the end. If I rewatched it would be solely for them.
3. A character death at the end serves no story purpose except to ensure the second couple don't outshine the main couple.
4. Our no-nonsense Seri devolves from a woman who knows her mind to one who spends 90% of the finale lying down or crying.
5. At the halfway point and then until pretty much the last 2-3 eps the pace slows riiiiight down and left me skipping through them all without missing anything significant.
5. An ending that wrapped things up well enough but left me unsatisfied.

So, not for me, this one.

A show you will definitely like!

I just finished watching this show and what can else can I say about it apart from the fact that it's a tearjerker, a comedic and blissful romance...
What I love about this show is hard to list out because of the huge number, but I must agree on the fact that the familial, and friendship bonds in this show are so raw that it'd just bring a teary smile to your face. The way they show the contrast between the North and South in every aspect is just so gorgeously detailed that it never fails to bring out my empathetic side for the North Koreans. There's a small aspect of dark humor underlining the entire show that you'll have a great time figuring it out.
The main leads romance is so cliche yet so pure and enjoyable to watch that the cliche aspect wouldn't even stop you from liking it.
The story of the second leads is just as good as one would expect it to be and I loved all the side characters. Even the bad ones.
The only drawback of this drama is that it is HIGHLY unrealistic. But that just made it even more enjoyable to watch so I'm not in queue to complain.
I will definitely rewatch it one day.

It's really hard to move on and find what's next k-drama to watch once you finish this, especially to us who always wait every week for updates. No doubt! This drama will make its way to your list of "Best Korean Drama of All Time". Why? Story wise! Character wise! and Acting wise! This drama has all of it that you will be hooked up once you start watching it.

This drama will make you fall in love again (and again), and make you realize how it is nice to be in love. This drama also proves how powerful love is that even the demarcation line between South and North Korea means nothing for the two person in love. Also, I stan the character of Seo Dan, a perfect picture of a strong, independent woman. You will not hate his character coz she didn't do a lot of things to hinder the relationship of Jeong Hyeok and Se-ri as she was also busy making her own love story. Lastly, we all wish that we have our own Ri Jeong Hyeok in our life! Watch the drama if you want to find out.

Honestly, I thought I was done with K-Dramas for a while until this popped on to my radar and of course, N E T F L I X.

****SPOILERS BELOW****

From the main leads to the second leads to the supporting cast, everyone's character was written well (enough) that you knew what their motives were. The selfish greedy but 'dumb' brother and his nothing-but-evil wife were fun to see getting beat down at the end. And strangely enough, I found her eldest brother and sister-in-law quite comical and obviously, not as greedy and heartless as their younger counterparts.

I was devastated that GSJ didn't make it to the end because I did love him and Dan together, but I felt like they wanted to add that extra 'tragedy' moment to the show. Yeah, I said it, they just wanted to add more drama to the drama, 'cause I didn't think he deserved to die unlike some dramas where characters died out of 'redemption' or karma from their own actions. Unless I forgot something, all he did was exact revenge by scamming the family that scammed his. :(

Overall, there were cliché moments as with any K-Drama, but at least this one had a few nice twists and turns and the plot line and setting made a real difference. It wasn't a hospital, school, justice system setting which really took it and turned it into a more unique experience for the viewer. The chemistry between the leads and all the heartfelt moments between Seri and the NK characters made me cry buckets of tears. I loved that even though she was a 'cold' and 'picky' chaebol in SK, it was in NK that she learned to not be picky, to be social, and yet still retain her most loving mindset. She and RJH really do make a perfect couple! Cheers to the cast and the whole team behind the show!

Complete watching the drama in 3 days. Have to say it's so so only.

There were many very sweet moments in the drama between Son Ye Jin and Hyun Bin, especially when they keep reminding each other that they would eventually be separated. The 4 subordinates of HB created many light hearted moments in the drama. SYJ is so pretty in the drama, regardless of the clothes she was in. All so classy and graceful.

I am touched by the writer's perspective. They tried to show us the human side of North Koreans. I appreciated seeing things from this point of view.

The scenes in Switzerland were gorgeous.

What I dislike,

1. really weak OST. I don't understand how come they couldn't put in more effort on the OST. I can barely remember any songs from this drama.

2. The drama lacked those heart breaking moments that wld make you remember the drama. For example, I can totally remember those heart breaking scenes in Goblin 1 year after watching it, but I can hardly think of any heart breaking moments from CLOY.

I kinda don't get the hype and rating for this drama. It's not that it's not good, but I don't think it is good enough to get this kind of hype.

Just passable for me, I guess.

An okay comedy, but superficial romance

The opening to episode one did not really draw me in, but I pushed through. If you watch this then you have to come to terms with that it is super unrealistic, the first episode sets the fantasy/cartoon like tone - surviving a tornado, running through a minefield unscathed, elite soldier missing his shot, north Koreans soldiers super friendly to southerners etc (all in first episode).

So much of the plot is stupid coincidences, and Seri being stuck in NK seems convoluted, every plan failed. When she does get back to Seoul then all the tension is pretty much gone, and the show just devolves into North Koreans tyring chicken and random south Korean stuff.

The show is supposed to be a romance, but Seri comes off unspathetic (especially when back in princess mode in Seoul), but why are Seri and Captain Ri a good match? Dan & Albert had a much better romance and chemistry going on, whereas Seri and Ri looked more like friends or siblings.
There is a scene when they are in Seoul and Ri asks Seri about her interests and she replies "You don't need to know that type of stuff, I told you already, your face is my type"..., yeah she told him that in the first episode, but this is like episode 13 or something and she is pulling out some shallow response like that? So she is spoilt and gets her way with him because he is weak willed & he is handsome.., soudns like an awesome romance..

Ri is also too perfect, like he apparently a musical genius, all the women like him, his is rich, comes from a family of high status, he plays an instrument, he reads a lot, he is tall and strong, kind.., he made noodles *fresh* for her in episode 2 or something. Dude cooked fresh noodles and usedthe spaghetti/noodle machine. He is some unrealistic Nietzschean Korean superman. If they made a season 2 then it's probably entail Ri building space probes, colonizing Mars, solving the world's energy crsis, and bringing world peace, oh and raising a successful family or something. He came off too fake and unrelatable, give the character some flaws beyond being weak willed.

Music was okay, but this is 2 months later or something and I can't remember any of the songs. The songs were pushed too much too, I get they are probably going to sell the songs to the audience or something, but sometimes I heard the same songs over and over, and they'd just have these long musical parts where nobody spoke; those were dull.

Comedy aspect was alright, you have the annoying and sometimes funny housewives of the village, most of the funny moments for me were Ri's second in command, Dan's mother and uncle, and Dan and Albert.

It's cool if you enjoyed Ri and Seri, but for me I'd much rather have watched a show focusing on Dan and Albert, they felt more organic, not forced like the main couple. They were cute, sucks the writers killed that off, not sure if it was to insert some sadness or to stop them outshining the main couple.

The sad backstory of being left on the beach as a kid for a few hours was not really that traumatic, so that plus not getting on with her family means she'd suicide? Eh.
Why is the ending they meet each other only in Switzerland? It's strange, Ri could easily buy a house outside of North korea and meet up anywhere, Dan was Studying in Russia for ages so clearly people are allowed to leave NK easily.
I felt emotional maybe in one scene when Man Bok (the rat) told Ri how his brother died or something.
Overall a decent show, but you are best going into this approaching it as an unrealistic and over the top comedy show than anything else.
