This is going to be reallyyyyy long
SPOILER ALERT.
To be honest, what dragged me to this series was its similarity to Itazura Na Kiss' plot. I first saw ALSB in a fanmade video in youtube and your Itazura avid fan reacted, "IS THIS THE CHINESE VERSION OF ITAZURA NA KISS??"
Story - 9.5
But upon watching the first episodes, I realized the difference, particularly the characters. Although the actual plot: "a flank student falls in love with a highly intellectual, handsome yet isolated guy" was highly similar to Itazura Na Kiss.
What I love about ALSB's plot is... It doesn't need a fresh and mind-wrecking plot to be beautiful. The plot is so simple yet captivating. And I really enjoy it to the point of getting lost and wanting more and I didn't realized that I just finished the whole series. I love how Wu Bo Song's character here effectively works. I love how the plot happens to be your typical love story. ALSB also talks about their dreams. I really love the part where they all get to write what they dream of and Lu Yang writes "to be a healthy person." I love the high school feels and Xiao Xi's struggle in college although the topic just passed by. I love the relationships between characters, particularly Jiang Chen's and Bo Song's characters (they are still friends despite liking the same girl). Most of all, I love how Xiao Xi and Jiang Chen's relationship developed gradually. In ALSB, IT'S THE SMALL THINGS THAT MATTER.
And about the last episode? It isn't that episode you'll be waiting to watch but I still love it. I was so disappointed that it was the last episode. ???? Couldn't it be a bit longer? Making it a bit longer can also emphasize their adult life. Personally, I think after the high school part everything went fast-paced. I was so surprised when Jiang Chen became extra showy of his emotions to Xiao Xi in the next episode after their high school life. I find it sudden, though. We could have savor the process and their adulting more if there's extra 2 episodes.
Finally, I like how the story didn't went to a cringy love story. It was so lovely that you wouldn't get tired of it. But if you weren't that cliche love story kind of viewer, this drama isn't for you. But I'm in love with the story's sincerity, soul and simplicity.
Acting/Casting - 10
Chen Xiao Xi - Who would have thought that this series is her first lead role and big break as an actress? And who would have thought that her first kiss will be given to our Jiang Chen? Isn't that the cutest thing ever?
I actually find Xiao Xi's character the most fictional but when I was trying to recall if I'm that childish back in my highschool days, I reconsidered the thought. Going back, I find Xiao Xi's character the most beautiful thing to watch since there's visible development with her highschool and adult character. Is it just me or she delivered her role so well that I was shocked to find out that it's her first major lead role? Oh, I also searched for her videos and she also sings beautifully! (contrary to Episode 24). I actually want her to sing the OST with Jiang Chen. I wouldn't also protest if her acting made her the most capable for Shan Cai's character in the Chinese version in the iconic meteor garden. But it makes me a bit sad since I love the Hu Yi Tian and Shen Yue loveteam and height difference.
Jiang Chen - Now, on Jiang Chen. HOW CAN THIS PERFECT GUY EXIST ON EARTH WITHOUT ME KNOWING FOR 18 YEARS???? HE IS OUTSTANDINGLY PERFECT!!!! Fangirling aside, I am in love with Jiang Chen's character here and we finally have a human lead guy here! What I mean is, the usual perfect guy is either a casanova or a snobbish isolated guy. Jiang Chen is more of the latter one but not totally isolated (although he is sometimes). The perfect guy Jiang Chen has a circle of friends! Perfect guy is your introvert friend that stands for his friend when they need him. *insert the scene where Lu Yang ran so hard and the whole squad's chasing him*. He also asks his friends for help when Xiao Xi went mad on him. He isn't expressive but he displays lowkey emotions, especially when these emotions are related to Xiao Xi, he himself couldn't keep it. But a lot of times he expresses those emotions either in a funny way or in a negative way. I was laughing so hard when he dragged Xiao Xi away from Bo Song after he lost a billiard game to the later. And for the negative way, he told Xiao Xi how embarassed he is with her after tripping off the stage during a school play (he did this because he saw Xiao Xi's shirt looking the same with Bo Song's). He even went to an extent of having a fake girlfriend (thanks to Dr. Su) to test Xiao Xi's feelings for him.
Jiang Chen's character developed in the latter part of the series. We saw a Jiang Chen who hasn't moved on after a break up with Xiao Xi, 3 years ago. We saw how much he longs for Xiao Xi and how he desperately works out their relationship (note the front seat incident where he transfers all his things to the passenger seat so Xiao Xi won't have a choice but to seat beside him and the straightforward "let's make up" scene). He somehow learned how to be expressive and now he uses his charms to get Xiao Xi back. We also see him at lost after his vain attempts of retrieving the only girl she loved. Hu Yi Tian's acting is so moving on the confession scene where Xiao Xi listens through Bo Song's phone. You could actually tell at one glance how weary he is upon losing Xiao Xi. It was as breathtaking as when he sees Xiao Xi after 3 years.
Wu Bo Song - This man is the real MVP. HOW CAN A SECOND LEAD BE SO PROMISING?! Everyone will agree that he deserves the world. I never had a second lead syndrome before so you have to believe me that he is actually the best second lead that existed. Both leads are raised from a certain stereotype but Wu Bo Song isn't the annoying second lead nor the taking advantage second lead. He is the "I'm just here" unconditional loving second lead. I love his relationship with Xiao Xi. I thought that they can be somehow compatible during the scene Bo Song shows her a lizard while Xiao Xi was rolling herself to the corner of the car and they were arguing why on earth Bo Song finds it cute. But my favorite scene with Bo Song was the fake snow scene. He almost had my heart there.
Second Leads - With the Rosetta and Philae loveteam, they are so lovely!!! I love how they have their own story for viewers to enjoy. It was heart warming to see how Lu Yang's annoying character turns into a very sweet one. Individually, I love them, particularly Lin Jinxiao and her frank disposition with Xiao Xi (we all need a friend like her). These two will make you also giggle at 4 am like the main loveteam.
But what I love the most of ALSB is the friendship. Absolutely #squadgoals. You'll find yourself smiling at looking how the characters interact with each other's differences and point of views. It's like reminiscing unforgettable memories with your friends.
Music - 9.0
When I first heard the opening song, I was humming it to myself for 2 weeks because it matches the light vibe of the series. Since I couldn't speak mandarin, I searched the actual english translation and even found a fanmade english version. I also downloaded Hu Yi Tian and Shen Yue's version of it. ???? Whenever I hear it, I couldn't help to smile ridicoulusly.
Rewatch Value - 10
After being a bias wrecker to my favorite asian drama, I personally think that ALSB is something that I wouldn't get tired of watching over and over again. That was my thinking before the last part showed up. JIANG CHEN TELLING THE WHOLE STORY IN HIS POINT OF VIEW (in a shorter manner). I was taken back when he tells the other side of the door while having flashbacks. I didn't saw that coming and I didn't saw it leaving me on a cliffhanger feeling as well! Like, wait what? Can I have more of these? I wanted to watch the whole series again but this time I know Jiang Chen's secret. ????
This series is gold. Seriously, this is one of the best series out there if not the best (but it just became my all time favorite). ???? After finishing the series, I was at lost, asking myself: what should I do with my life now? Anyway, who wants season 2? ????
