Too Precious!

This movie is so serene, calming, and such a cute watch. Though it's short, it is very sweet and meaningful!

I'll definitely watch it again.

Many might not share the same opinion as me, because the story is indeed a bit cliche, but it's way too cute and adorable. Definitely worth a watch in my opinion.

It has elements of shounen-ai, but a ton of message with regards to friendship. If you are bored and are looking for something to pass time with, or if you are looking for something that's simple, then do check this out!

A Story about Overcoming Disabilities... with a Hint of Romance?

Hidamari ga Kikoeru is more of a story about overcoming disabilities than a romance. While the movie claims to be a Boys Love, there is barely any romance. Kohei gives Taichi many hints that he is in love with him, but Taichi is very dense and doesn’t notice. He even doesn’t know how to react to Kohei kissing him, so there is barely any romance.

•❅✧❅✦ Story ✦❅✧❅•

However, just because there is barely any romance, doesn’t mean that it’s a bad movie. Taichi is constantly saving Kohei by not treating him any different from normal, and that is the heart of the story. It’s through Taichi that Kohei learns to love himself and his disability. There are very few films out there that can deal with this type of heavy topic without getting preachy, and this film is one of the few that does it perfectly. There is no special treatment or romance to save the day, it’s all just Taichi being Taichi that warms Kohei’s heart.

That being said, this is a movie and has a very short screen time. The movie tries to cover Kohei’s disability, his emotional turmoil over not being able to adapt to society and his growing feelings for Taichi. Due to issues with screen time, Kohei and Taichi’s relationship end up becoming more of a bromance because it’s not explored much in comparison to Kohei’s disabilities. I wish we had more screen time to show Taichi and Kohei's romance because... well, it is marketed as a BL.

•❅✧❅✦ Manga vs Film ✦❅✧❅•

While the manga is still ongoing as of writing, it’s so much better than the movie. The movie only covers the first volume, but Kohei and Taichi’s romance starts blossoming much later. Taichi starts to notice Kohei’s hints and starts trying to think of his feelings. It takes a while, but he does end up dating Kohei. Once they start reciprocating their feelings, they are an amazing couple. Taichi even starts to think of building a better future for Kohei where he can be included in society without prejudice, so he drops out of college and starts working at a company that helps those that are hearing-impaired. While Taichi may be slow and dense, he really puts Kohei and Kohei’s comfort first.

Honestly, while the Movie is good, the Manga is so much better. The movie feels rushed and unfinished towards the end. It feels rushed because at the climax, Kohei and Taichi have a misunderstanding, which leaves Kohei all flustered about not being able to live without hearing Taichi’s voice. There wasn’t much build up on his personality being very paranoid about not being able to hear Taichi, so it felt like it came out of nowhere.

As for the ending… Well, they kiss… And that’s it. Taichi doesn’t respond back to Kohei’s feelings, which is manga accurate, but he didn’t hate it, nor was he confused about it. He accepted Kohei’s feelings and nothing else. Kohei also just accepted that Taichi didn’t understand the meaning of the kiss and was willing to just have Taichi by his side without any strings attached. It wasn’t a very satisfactory ending, but an ending that screams there needs to be a sequel.

•❅✧❅✦ Film vs Drama ✦❅✧❅•

The drama version was made in 2024, seven years after the movie. The drama follows the plot of the manga more closely than the movie. The drama also covers more volumes than the movie. Due to having more time to explore the characters and the plot, the drama is able to focus on numerous plot points like Kohei’s disability, his emotional turmoil over being unable to adapt well to society due to his deafness, and of course, Kohei’s love for Taichi. The drama also includes Maya, a girl with a similar disability as Kohei. The drama also expands more on Taichi’s friends, family, and future prospects as he thinks of a better future for Kohei.

In terms of plot and romance the drama was better. The movie only had a little over an hour to fit everything from Kohei’s disability to their romance. The drama had 12 episodes to explore all of their issues. However, when it comes to the characters and their chemistry together, the movie was so much better.

The characters in the movie seem to embody more of Kohei and Taichi than the drama. Taichi is more loud and annoying, and literally looks dense, but he shows more expressions of concern for Kohei. Similarly, while movie Kohei is less expressive, he seems to genuinely be in love with Taichi and just wants Taichi to be by his side with no strings attached. It’s because of this genuine side to their characters they have better chemistry.

Overall, while I like how the drama expanded on the story, I personally think the movie was far more superior despite it’s flaws with the plot.

•❅✧❅✦ Acting ✦❅✧❅•

In terms of acting, the two actors did very well. It felt very natural, and they had lots of chemistry. The climax of the film was a bit difficult to understand since there wasn’t enough time to completely show Kohei’s growing feelings for Taichi and how it connects to his disability, but other then that everything felt natural.

•❅✧❅✦ Overall ✦❅✧❅•

Hidamari ga Kikoeru is a nice movie. It has an interesting storyline and amazing characters. It is a little slow-paced and doesn’t have much romance. But if you can get past that, it’s a nice drama.
From Kohei’s struggles and Taichi’s straightforwardness and willingness to help adapt to Kohei is something everyone needs to see.

That being said, I sadly I won’t be recommending the movie to anyone anytime soon. Instead, I will have to recommend the drama first, before the movie, sadly due to the drama covering more plotlines and having more romance.

It's still a great movie, though so I recommend watching it, especially if you've already seen the drama. Please tell me which Taichi you prefer? I prefer the movie Taichi over drama Taichi~!

The film was made according to the manga, faithfully, it did not deviate, and I think that the Japanese youth have been copying the hair style from the manga for many years, that the young people look like some fragile young ladies. I've seen a lot of other Japanese "civilian" movies, so I wouldn't consider this a "typical representative of Japanese production" as the previous reviewer claims. The picture is very successful, but the low-quality copy did not allow me to have a greater experience. However, I felt a bigger age difference between the two main characters than it should have been, that they are the same age, but I didn't mind. The elder Sugihara Kohei, hard of hearing and timid, his character was faithfully played, and the younger Sagawa Taiichi and they build a relationship between them that deals with Kohei's hearing problems and how Taiichi could help him. This relationship eventually blossoms, although I don't think it was clear at the end how deep Taiichi's feelings are especially towards Kohei, but it was like that according to the manga. Nice experience...

Thank God they made a remake

Mn, I don't like it.
Of course I like the plot,- but I don't like Kohei's character here.
He's acting like a Gadis Manja menggerutu; idk how to say that in English, mn..... a spoiled girl who always grumbles??!? (he's doing it with his eyes, + he also has a judgmental gaze).
He reminds me of Ji Hyun from Eight Sense

I'm so glad they made a remake because~
If this was the only adaptation of 'Hidamari ga Kikoeru,' I might never have thought to read the manga bcoz i think, this...... is..... bad.!
The series version, which is still airing now, is so good; they made it exactly like the manga.
We can also see how Kohei develops his feelings for Taichi. We don't get that in this film, and it's not because of the limited duration.
Here, Kohei looks like he was born- ummn Gay?
There is no state where he considers his feelings for Taichi, whether it is love, like pure friendship, or romantic love-love.?!
In Here, he seems like a man who has never received attention and love in his life, then immediately falls in love with the first person who gives him that attention.

Ah, And you're delusional if you think they have chemistry here.
Go to check Delusion by One OK Rock.

Loved it, but need help with something.

I absolutely loved this show. It was short, sweet, to the point. It had its ups and downs, drama, sadness, love and acceptance all in one show. Now what I need help with is finding out the name of the ending credit song it's All piano and it's absolutely beautiful. I know that it stated music was by Nobuhiko Morino, but I can't seem to find the song on Spotify I've listened to every one of his songs. If anybody knows the name of the ending credit piano song please let me know.

Heartwarming watch

This was an heartwarming watch. I only watched it because I recently discovered its tv adaptation. Thought it would be ideal to watch this before the new one adaptation.

There were a few dialogues I disagreed with watching this but putting myself Sugihara’s shoes definitely makes you understand his way of thinking.

It all does come down to cultural differences I think. Looking forward to watching the TV adaptation.

A little bit boring but pretty moving

It''s pretty well done for a short movie. It manages to capture quite a lot in a short period without feeling rushed. In fact, it's a little too slow paced for me lol

It's kinda boring, although it's touching and moving at same time

I guess, it depends on what you're looking for

It's a nice movie to watch on a rainy day where you just wanna chill. Nothing dramatic, nothing thrilling, or too fancy

Just sweet friendship, lovely moments and simple story.

sugar sweet

this was the most endearing, heartwarming, wholesome BL i've seen in a while - from start to finish i couldn't stop smiling cause both the mains, r just adorable - even though Taiichi's dennis the menace personality was just enchanting, i couldn't get enough of him and i "got" why Sugihara fell, so hard and fast for him. doubt anyone could be unaffected by his charm - he was a ray of sunshine and not only cause of his sparkling personality and loud voice, but cause he was a man that stood up for what he though was right and good and he wasn't scared to (literally) fight what he though was wrong/bad. not a lot of people got a back-bone made out of steal, let alone those kind of morals and high standers...

this was a joy to view and see how everything unfolded, i could feel when Sugihara's intrigue turned into wonder cause he was hooked and then he "ran/" cause he didn't want to be hated - not by the one person that brought some light into his dark isolated world.
the fact that Taiichi was as infatuated was all the more touching - even though he still couldn't comprehend what he felt was love and that same thing Sugihara has confessed to feeling - he just knew he cared for Sugihara and wanted to be in his life. if that's not a positive ending - idk what is.

and yeah there loads of serious issue's dealt with Sugihara hearing loss - which was getting worse as the time went by. his isolation and segregation by his peers. let alone Taiichi's back-story (which WTF is wrong with people that decide to bring a child into the world and then ditch him cause they want to move on with their lives?!? sorry but people like this need to be castrated, so they can't bring any more children into the world and toss them aside the sec they had enough) and that deep down even though he doesn't seem so, he is carrying a heavy burden - which ironically is also isolating him as he acts like everything couldn't be better, when he is really hurting. so them finding each other felt like kismet, cause they just "fit".

side note: idk where i've seen Tawada Hideya (playing Sugihara) but the dude is beautiful in this movie and was tempted more then once to stop the scene and just stare at his face, he so beautiful - and not even gonna mentioned when he smiled. so having gotten that off my chest - this was a gem - lovely and sweet in the most organic, soul cleansing way - wholeheartedly recommend and for sure a rewtach!!!

The movie is not how I thought it would be,at some parts it was awkward. They rushed the story imo. the actors playing Taiichi and kouhei were pretty similar to that of manga but the kouhei in the movie seemed quite timid, in the book he appeared rather cold. there was some awkward pauses between them, overall it could be better. I really liked the manga so I had better expectation from the movie. Not that their acting was that poor it's just me who didn't find it as good as the manga.

So sweet, so short but so content

It's one of those dramas that you can be satisfied with the ending but would think of the "ifs" if it can continue cause there's still a lot of things that the movie can go from after. overall everything is cute and well done! i don't have hearing impairment so i cant judge how well they portrayed the disability but from a person who doesn't have it, it's very understandable. It is sad but it's not something to be pity about yet society still makes people who have hearing impairment or disability be ashamed of themselves and make things more harder so I'm glad sugihara met sagawa! I wish every people with hearing impairment or disability have someone who will be there for them, treat them the same way as others and understands them the way they want to.

The only problem I have is the unrealistic way of making a connection between the leads, so one of the leads have hearing impairment and it's getting worse but still, the only one he can hear clearly is the other lead which is so stupid and so selective that destiny just made a miracle come true lol

It could've been more, like a season 2 or just another movie that is a continuation of this, I would love to see them explore their relationship and be able to show how relationships works on partners that have hearing impairment especially homosexual relationship will still be an obstacle, I wonder how they will get through and their adultery journey would've been nice to see but it's okay with it cause you can imagine it yourself.

At the time the film was filmed, the end of the manga created by Yūki Fumino did not yet exist.

Teen films are always a good idea. Portraits of a generation are like fascinating stories that allow us to understand the unique characteristics and experiences of those who make it up in a specific era. The transition from adolescence to adulthood, known as "coming of age", is presented differently depending on the cultural and temporal context in which it is situated. Furthermore, maturity is not reached in the same way for everyone and it is these stories that increasingly interest the public because they allow us to analyze society and also ourselves a little.
Kamijo Daisuke, in his directorial debut, is responsible for the film proposal 'Hidamari ga Kikoeru' (ひだまりが聴こえる), from 2017, the real-time adaptation of the shōnen-ai genre manga of the same name written and illustrated by Yūki Fumino, a mangaka who began her professional career in 2013. With her delicate and poetic style, her work was published for the first time on October 27, 2014 by Printemps Shuppan.
The script is written by Takahashi Natsuko, known for writing the series 'Hana Yori Dango' and the films 'No Touching At All' ('Doushitemo Furetakunai'), 'Seven Days: Monday - Thursday', 'Seven Days: Friday - Sunday', 'Does the Flower Bloom?', among others.
The plot of this romantic drama of the youth, school and Yaoi genre begins by narrating the difficulties that Kōhei Sugihara has hearing, since the current university student had suffered from a sudden sensorineural hearing loss during high school. Circumstances have led him to become a lonely, distrustful, introverted, unsociable and distant young man with great difficulties relating to other people. He himself admits to feeling "out of place wherever he goes."
Thus, Kamijo Daisuke presents us with a love story between two teenagers of the same gender, and analyzes the problems that the world can pose for a person with hearing problems.
Kōhei's entire life changes when he accidentally meets Taichi Sagawa, who offers to take notes in classes for him in exchange for the lunch that the disabled student gives him every day. Kōhei will soon discover that he can hear the loud voice of the new acquaintance without difficulty.
This is how a friendship develops between a boy who had always had problems socializing, because his hearing problems caused him to be marginalized by his classmates, and another cheerful, optimistic, determined and empathetic, energetic boy and extrovert who lives practically in poverty, needing to work while attending university in order to survive. Both will help each other and, little by little, they will give in to their feelings, unleashing a beautiful story of friendship and love.
Taichi will make Kōhei open up to the world once he assures him that his hearing loss is not his fault. Taichi's kind words pierce through Kohei's usual defense mechanisms and open his heart, causing his feelings for Taichi to turn into love. Now they are more than friends and less than lovers. Still, this relationship changes Kohei forever.
Thanks to Taichi, Kōhei begins to smile and integrate into the social life of the campus. Others also begin to see him with different eyes. Taichi becomes the friend he never had or perhaps lost when he lost his hearing and was ostracized. Taichi teaches him "that there may also be a place for him on the other side."
Taichi and Kōhei challenge gender norms on a journey of self-discovery. His story takes us into themes such as the search, the formation of identity, personal growth and the transition to adulthood. But it also addresses feelings such as loneliness, happiness, marginalization or improvement.
It is not a simple love story between two teenagers, but rather it represents the problems that can arise in a romantic relationship when one of the two members of the relationship has a hearing disability. Thus, beyond a standard love theme, 'Hidamari ga Kikoeru' is a call to eradicate the mistreatment and discrimination that society carries out on minority groups, be it the disabled or the members of the group. LGBTIQ+.
In this way, the film becomes a manifesto to demand the equality of all human beings. Being different, something highly punished in Japan, should not be seen as something bad, but rather should be integrated into society until, one day, there is no discrimination of any kind for the mere fact of being different from others.
The main roles of the film distributed by Nippon Shuppan Hanbai are played by Hideya Tawada and Akira Onodera as Kōhei and Taichi, respectively. The former is known for his role as Takigawa Kinji in the series 'Shuriken Sentai Ninninger' and in the films 'Shuriken Sentai Ninninger the Movie: The Dinosaur Lord's Splendid Ninja Scroll!', from 2015, 'Shuriken Sentai Ninninger vs. ToQGer the Movie: Ninjas in Wonderland', from 2016, among others.
For his part, Onodera Akira has his first leading role in Taichi, after playing the character Amamiya Masaki [Young] in 'High&Low: The Red Rain', Inukai Manabu [Classmate] in 'Daytime Shooting Star' or Sakamata Kiyone [Mysterious teenage boy] in the series 'Rinsho Hanzai Gakusha Himura Hideo no Suiri'.
The cast is completed by Mitsuya Ryo as Yokoyama Tomonori, Takashima Reiko as Sugihara Ryoko, Yamazaki Ami, Igeta Hiroe, Fukumoto Yuki, Hiranuma Norihisa, Nakamaru Shinsho.
However, the ending of the film is understandable. At the time it was filmed, the end of the manga created by Yūki Fumino did not yet exist. We had to wait 7 years later for the trio of debut directors Yaegashi Fuga, Makino Masaru and Harashima Takanobu to bring 'Hidamari ga Kikoeru' to the small screen, in a version for the TV Tokyo channel starring Nakazawa Motoki and Kobayashi Toranosuke. who play Sugihara Kōhei and Sagawa Taichi, respectively.
