I can't say I'd rewatch this drama purely because watching it once already felt like watching it a thousand times. It's cute, it's simple, girl moves in with a guy on accident and falls for him, yeah, but the plot is way too repetitive.
Every time we're about to get Uehara being nice to Nao, he backs out like a coward and keeps up his cold front. The only time he gets protective is when there's another dude around, how healthy!

Nao's only strength seems to be cooking, anything else she tries, she's pretty bad at which upsets me. I wish there was more to her character but there's like 3 personality traits per person in this show. Hers? Airhead, chef, and totally googly-eyed over her roomie.

If you are thinking of watching this, I'm going to assume you either A: Enjoy roommates/enemies to lovers or B: Need something to put on in the background while you cook food. Or both, I don't judge.

Good Morning Call serves its title as the representative of nearly every shoujo manga ever. It presents itself with a very cute and fresh ambience, an example of what a shoujo manga would be like and how it would be received if turned into a live action (as the show itself is based off of a shoujo).

STORY:
Many reviews have pointed out the lack of originality in the general plot. And I agree, at first, it's predictability generally pissed me off a little and made me a bit hesitant to continue watching. As someone who has read shoujo ever since their elementary school years, the story is a textbook stereotype and so were all the twists and turns and arcs. The only thing missing was the beach arc.

However, this does not formulate into a god awful show, as everyone loves a good cliché. Although it does not bring anything new and refreshing to the table, it was quite a nostalgic watch for me, and garnered several comments as I went through the episodes as if I was seeing these clichés for the very first time. It's a simple and sweet story that caters to the exact audience it's made for, and for that I give props. I do wish Netflix adapted a more original shoujo, however. This show is literally L-DK except their apartment is bigger.

CAST/ACTING:
Acting, at most, was slightly above mediocre for me. I'm used to the way Japanese actors act in these romance dramas, but how they presented their characters — especially Uehara — gave a very poor performance of making us like them in general. Marina seemed rather annoying, and Uehara's expressions never seemed to soften even when he laughed or supposedly softens up in front of Nao.
Nao's actress definitely pursued that awkward, shy, idiotic and pouty atmosphere I believe the character is supposed to have, which was a good performance on her part.

However, their characters are not supposed to be dramatically realistic anyway as the drama itself is rather comedic. As per usual, I rooted for the second male leads throughout the entire thing, and by far the most likable character to me was Kitaura for some reason.

MUSIC:
Nothing I can remember from the top of my head, so easily forgettable. It could be rather cheery and matches with the mood.

REWATCH VALUE:
Not very high. Perhaps I should head over to reading the manga instead, as people say Uehara is much nicer in the original adaption and shows more genuine emotion. I may also watch the second season to pass the time, as I wasn't exactly very obsessed with the show to begin with.

OVERALL:
A sweet, simple and predictable romance drama which is ideal to pass the time. Although I am a lover of clichés and did find myself liking this drama somewhere in between, it really is about time they start changing it up a bit before the audience really does get bored of it. I would definitely recommend if you love shoujo manga and all its cute little stereotypes, but not if you're looking for something different.

'You live here too?!'

It's so stupid but I do like this drama. It's very reminiscent of Playful Kiss but with that comedic Japanese element. It's got every trope in the book, orphans, sharing a room, love triangles, love quadrilterals, strict parents, meddling second leads, mean girls, sick days from rainy dates etc... This show is well aware that it is corny and it runs with it! It's made to be silly, and it's corniness not just an unfortunate side effect, but a deliberate move on the directors part and I love it!

Nao is very annoying but loveable and it's fun watching her grow and mature. I love that she wears her heart on her sleeve and is always honest about her feelings. Her level of immaturity at the start of her first relationship is perfect and sets the stage for some growing up later on in the show.

Hisashi again, manages to grow as a person and becomes more accommodating and kinder as the show goes on. Too often do I see in dramas, a cold, mean male lead that never grows and is never held accountable for his actions yet still gets the girl at the end. It's refreshing to see that in a corny drama the cold male lead does become a better person.

It's pretty predictable and nothing amazing or revolutionary in the way of plot but cleans up nicely and is a wonderful addition to cute teen romance dramas everywhere.

Watch this for a adorable little drama, that is very easy to watch or even binge.

Good Morning Call and I have a love/hate relationship. I hated that I loved it so much. I don't normally go for the lovey-dovey cutesy romance dramas but I needed something to marathon and decided to give this a try. I got hooked from episode 1. Nao GOT ON MY NERVES!!! The entire drama she had plenty of good men in love with her but in true drama fashion, she went for the jerk. I think I stuck with this drama because of the character Daichi. He looks like Kang Daesung from BigBang. Once I had that thought, I had to find out what happened to his character.
Overall this drama was good. I hope there is a season 2 though I don't know where they can go in the story-line. I am trying hard not to post spoilers (ugh) but please if you enjoy screaming at the screen and staying up late into the night when you have work in the morning, watch this drama.

extremely cliche, liking it heavily depends on if you like the leads

This was totally cliche, from the girls squealing over the cold/smart/brooding ML, to the silly/quirky/dumb FL, the story was nothing special. It's pretty similar to ItaKiss and all those variations. The writers don't really try to do anything else, it's just a regular cohabitation drama with all the hijinks.

The acting was fine for me. I feel like they got the point of what their characters were supposed to be like. Unfortunately, I ended up getting 2nd/3rd/4th??? (I think there are 4 guys in total when considering both seasons) lead syndrome. I won't say which one got to me the most, but even though both he and the ML were originally mean to the FL, at least the one I liked became much warmer to her. I couldn't see any real feelings from the ML, even though he's supposed to be cold, does he really have to be that bad? I've watched almost every single variation of ItaKiss. I've always enjoyed the ones where the actors of the ML show that they do like the FL where they can. It really felt like she was still stuck in a one-sided love even when they were together.

It would have a higher rating from me if it could actually make me buy into the relationship between the leads. I believed that the FL really liked him, but I couldn't feel anything from the ML. A person has to be really into his type of character to not fall to 2nd lead syndrome.

I can't comment on the music since I don't really care about that.

I finished the drama, but it didn't really leave an impact. I do like certain scenes so I'd rewatch those, but I ultimately don't love the show. It's not a waste of time if anyone wants to watch something fluffy. Overall, it was good, but not great.

My introduction to asian drama's! And my first and last Japanese drama yet..
I gotta admit that I am a preferrer of Korean dramas but I have to give this show credit for drawing me in and introducing me to drama land.

Story: As far as the story goes.. Forced live in situations are my absolute favourite story line so this was write up my alley. I also have a special spot for high school dramas as they tend not to get tooooo melodramatic. This show knows how to leave you at a cliffhanger.. It isn't possible to leave it at one episode.. You have to keep watching till you eyes can't keep open mainly due to curiosity. Another thing I'm a sucker for is when the on screen couple is an off screen couple.. It just gives you a whole other dynamic to think about while watching which I love. I loved the show a lot the first time but when I watched it a second time my opinion fell a lot which means thats its probably not a great show to rewatch. But I like that there wasn't much scheming and 'adults interfering' and it was just simple and sweet..

Characters: I have to shamefully admit that I am a huge sucker for the good girl turning the mean guy nice especially for her so I liked the way the story unfolded. There were times I felt Uehara was unnecessarily mean but Ii guess its the contrast in his personality that makes everything so sweet in the end. Nao was such a sweet and lovable girl that it was impossible not to feel for her. I must say though that there were points where she just seemed too slow and childish which irritated me a lot. Cant say I had any special love for the second leads.. I found Daichi to be to desperate and Issei was better but cmonnn she already has a guy and he is HAWWT. Special shout out to her cool mom and to her amazing friends.. Loved them!

I needed to mention the last episode because dramas often tend to lag towards the end and end on an extremely underwhelming note but Good Morning Call most definitely did not. It actually almost brought tears to a generally dry eyed persons eyes.. Uehara was just so perfect and spoiler alert the secrets he had up his sleeve where just so heartwarmingly cute.

Overall would definitely recommend it as a one time watch.. Especially if you're into J dramas!

My first ever drama so I am attached to it, doesn't change the fact that it's a pretty bad drama

I really tried to like the ML, but every single one of the other love interests that were introduced, were a better match and just way healthier.
I could not bring myself to understand why the FL was so obsessed with this moody character of Uehara.
Ignoring this kind of red flaggish relationship of the FL and ML, I have to say some of the other characters really grew to me.
I fell in love with Daichi and even though Yuris whole story line was kind of icky I liked her.

Ending this review, I want to point out that there were of course some good (very few good) moments between the ML and the FL and I never regretted watching this drama (except most of the second season).

This show starts off cute and hooks you right away, BUT the recycled trope of tsundere dude and clingy girl is super outdated. I'm not one to whine about culture differences but the lack of feminism in Japan makes this show really hard to watch by mid-season. I went from finding the character Nao absolutely adorable to wanting to shake her silly by the end. No character development at all for either of the main leads. Everything cute and endearing about them in episode 1 fades away by episode 10 and every single moment of drama could be cleared up by 2 lines of communication between them. It's cringey and frustrating and you will hate yourself by how addicted you are to this stupid plot and lame leads.

He would be endearing if there weren't other guys who treat her better. Juxtaposing the main lead against literally ANYONE else makes you really hate him...Not once did I find myself rooting for their love. I had so much hope that she would wisen up and think "this guy sucks! He treats me bad, I am better than this!" which would make a refreshing twist on this tired genre. They signed off for a season 2 so maybe there is hope for a healthier relationship.

I would have dropped this show halfway if it weren't for the lovable secondary characters. They make the show something special, and I would pay good money to see a spinoff show featuring the Ramen guy.

Intensity lacking, Artificial Romance, No chemistry & Wasted characters

Good Morning Call is certainly that kind of a romantic-comedy drama focusing between two opposing characters, Nao and Uehara, that have hardly any good chemistry together.
The story was promising but the side characters could be used more wisely. Rather than using the side characters to lead the story in favor of the cold, anti-social Uehara and the dense Nao, they could use Daichi or Issei as the main second lead-rivals of Uehara's & Nao's relationship. Instead of posing a threat, these 2nd lead characters were just taking shots from Uehara who was simply doing nothing, and Nao who kept falling for him out of nowhere, calling him kind(?) and nice(?).
This leads to the creation of the most dull + artificial romance between two characters that I've ever seen. At the end of the day, despite the constant obstacles that their relationship was attracting, they were able to survive them unscratched, as if nothing actually happened.
No matter how many characters were being introduced, they all existed for one main reason; To make Uehara and Nao get closer together, failing each time. This in reality would have actually resulted in many break ups already.

It's such a shame that characters that had potential to turn this romance upside down, and create a lot of conflict were simply used as puppets for the main leads' romance, which again, is artificial at best.

Other than that, the acting was not impressive at all. At times, the characters were either over-exaggerating or just simply had a poker face 24/7 (I'm looking at you Uehara).
The music was decent for the show, and some OSTs were actually really good and fit the atmosphere in certain moments.
Cinematography-wise, nothing impressive either, but the camera quality for many Japanese shows is kind of old and not very clear. The sunlight it too much on certain scenes too.

All in all, if you are the type of person who has time to spare, then this romantic-comedy drama will be a good start for you to get into the Japanese romance scene, despite how dull & artificial the romance is in this show.
If you are more like a veteran like me, who has seen good romance-drama series from South Korea too, then this show ain't for you.

Good Morning Call

it’s a very typical high school crush to lovers story but’’ I loved it the actors are perfectly fit for their roles beautiful actresses and handsome actors. This Good Morning Call was the first time Japanese series I have watched after a long time because I do always watching Korean drama but since I watched this I started to watch other Japanese dramas and series on netflix. Let’s go back to this series at first i thought it’s gonna be boring but i was wrong it was funny and cute and it’s open to all ages but for some times i’m waiting for some scene that Issei will push himself to so that more dramatic scenes would rise but it’s fine. And for me I like to see Nao and Issei more than Uehara. I wish there will be season 3 ;-))

My first review in a japanese drama

I am a fan of kdrama and my daughter is japanese drama fan. And it was a second time for me to watch a japanese drama. The first time is You are my destiny japanese remake. Because I am an avid fan of fated to love storyline. I watched all the version. Much to say, it didnt catched my attention fully. But i come to watched this drama Good Morning Call thru netflix recommendation. I got curious. And it happened that out of curiousity i begun to loved this drama.
First, the female lead was so good in acting. It was her not the main lead got my attention. Her emotions, bubbly, sad, good heart reflects on her . As if she is not acting but it was really her, not the character in a drama. I really loved Nao. A true person.

Second, the story line. Nao fell in love with Euhara, but not immediately even he was the most popular person in school. It grows on their daily co habitation. She understand his inner self. Though she too has some insecurities. They trying to grow together. Slowly and so many obstacles. But that's love, growing together thru ups and down. And i as married woman for 23yrs. You loved a person not because you are the same as his but mostly opposite to you but understand each other. When Euhara told Nao "I love You" Nao replied "I know". Mostly men do not say I love you often same with my husband . It was very rare, but when they say it, it was with sincerity. And I just felt it. Since they are young, insecurity and jealousy is common with young couple but they will somehow conquer it.

3. friendship. Nao got true friends. And even her admirers becomes her friends because she was an honest person. Her honesty warms their heart. Though she didn't reciprocate their feeling they still wanted to stay friends with her. All the character played well. All the support roles were great even Daichi i loved him. Marina was really a bff. Abe character was hilarious but great too.

4. Music and rewatch value. I highly recommended it. It will give you a warm feeling. That you will re watch it till you are satisfied. Even the music were good.

I think i already have a long review. Hahaha. I hope you enjoy this as i do. I will try to watch more japanese drama in the future. Next in my list is coffee and vanilla. Nao and Daichi will be the lead actors. I know they too have chemistry.

The first episode just hooked me to this series and I enjoyed most of it. I kind of hate how people were complaining that the main lead Uehara shouldn't be with Nao but I just thought they were perfect with each other. I knew some of these actors because two of them were actually kamen riders before this so I recognize their faces. I loved how they put the heartbeat sound at those right times it should happen.

The plot interested me how the couple were already living together in the first episode. It was different for me that they couple(to be) just are living together. The show developed their relationship of how living together can change your relationship with the people you live with. I kind of hated the episodes where they go back and forth if they love each other or not too repetitive.

Characters I hate were Uehara's sister in law or first crush because she mostly kept appearing too much but then stop appearing which made the show better. I'm not sure why some of the guys except Uehara keep telling Nao that they like her or secretly like her while she likes Uehara or is her boyfriend.

There were some really funny moments that I enjoy. That ending I won't spoil made me go WOW. It's almost certain that a second season was gonna happen and it will be interesting to watch. I don't see why it had 17 episodes which felt long a little, wished the ending part where they kissed would of been better a little.
