Japanese LGBT+ Main & Side Characters/Romances
You have @River Cloud to thank for this existing.
LGBT+ representation in J-Dramas (and also Japanese movies but mainly J-Dramas) is few and far between. That's why I decided to make this list. There is progression, and I want to highlight Japan specifically for taking steps in the right direction.
I'll put a few movies on here. But mostly just dramas.
In an order.
First Post: https://mydramalist.com/profile/8835865/feeds/22D50TA
Note: Normally on my lists I will put links/directions to where you can find a title. However, this being Japan, finding legal sites or even fansubbers can be next to impossible. So, sorry if I sometimes just have to leave you with the ambiguous "can be found on free websites" as I don't want these options to no longer be available. Japan just has to make things difficult!
Subs PSA: DO NOT RUIN A GOOD THING FOR EVERYONE AND REPOST SOMEONE ELSE'S SUBS! YOU CAN DIRECT PEOPLE TO THESE RESOURCES BUT DO NOT REUPLOAD SHIT!
Disclosure: I, myself, am BiAce (Biromantic Asexual)
This list is not just for me by the way. It's for all of you guys! And you're more than welcome to leave suggestions in the form of a comment or even send me a message, regardless if we are friends or not.
Will contain spoilers at least regarding a character's sexuality/gender. May or may not contain other spoilers. I will attempt to keep it just to what is related to the rep. You have been warned!

1. Cherry Magic!
Japanese Drama - 2020, 12 episodes
#1
Main romance between two MLs as well as an AroAce (Aromantic Asexual) SFL, Fujisaki Nozomi.
Regarding Fujisaki, she doesn't specifically call herself by any label but how she describes her feelings toward relationships makes it clear enough.
Warning! This contains lethal doses of cuteness and fluff! Watch this if you want to inject dopamine directly into your veins.
Brownie Points: The level of respect and consideration Kurosawa has for Adachi will make any man, woman, or nonbinary person swoon. Swoon!
Consent Highlight: Mr. I'm-not-going-to-kiss-you-because-of-a-game-and-also-when-you-look-really-uncomfortable-with-the-situation-so-I'll-just-give-your-forehead-a-light-peck-and-go *cough* *cough* I mean, Mr. Kurosawa. Just take my heart. Go on, just take it!

2. Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna
Japanese Drama - 2022, 10 episodes
#2
Main blossoming romance between two FLs.
Regarding Nomoto Yuki, she is confirmed by the creator to be a Demisexual Lesbian. Her realization near the end of the drama was done very well. She is shown thinking back on her life and how she always felt like the odd one out when it came to romance. Her friends always talked about and paired up with boys while she had no interest. She takes some time to embrace herself for who she is, and the drama ends hopefully with her promising to herself that she will reveal her feelings for Totoko Kasuga.
Note: the creator
Overall thoughts: This is a great watch for the holidays. These lovely ladies will make you feel like you are floating on a cloud for a bit.

3. Duas Pessoas Que Não Podem se Apaixonar
Japanese Drama - 2022, 8 episodes
#3
Features an AroAce (Aromantic Asexual) FL, Kodama Sakuko, and ML, Takahashi Satoru.
They both say it themselves and the drama itself centers around being on the Ace/Aro Spectrum.
Side Note: As someone who recently came to terms with her own Asexuality (just Ace not AroAce), I found this incredibly comforting and validating.

4. Watashi to Otto to Otto no Kareshi
Japanese Drama - 2023, 10 episodes
#4
Features a main cast of Queer leads as well as a Lesbian--at least, I believe she is--SFL, Mika (she tells Misaki that she likes her and doesn't have/isn't shown having a relationship with a man).
Regarding Yuki, he says himself that he is Gay but does express appreciating/having certain feelings for Misaki (FL) as well as expresses simultaneously feeling something for her as well as Shuhei (ML). So I think, to be more specific, he is Biromantic Homosexual as well as Polyamorous.
Regarding Shuhei, from the beginning he expresses having feelings for more than one person at a time [Misaki (FL) and Yuki (ML)] as well as having feelings for men and women. Therefore, I think it's more than safe to say he is Bisexual as well as Polyamorous.
Regarding Misaki, she at first is adamant about only liking Yuki but later expresses having feelings for someone else as well and decides to not limit herself to a monogamous relationship. Therefore, I feel comfortable calling her Straight as well as Polyamorous.Link to my review (really recommend reading it as it goes into a lot, I would include it but the character limit is stopping me): https://mydramalist.com/profile/8835865/reviews/269781
To attempt to summarize my thoughts: This is amazing polyamorous rep! I cannot recommend it enough!

5. Joshi-teki Seikatsu
Japanese Drama - 2018, 4 episodes
#5
Features a Lesbian Transgender FL, Miki.
This is nothing short of a rare drama. When I first watched it I was worried it would be some sort of mean parody. But, don't worry, it's not.
Miki is a very strong character with an interesting personality and outlook on life.
Episode 3 was a particularly emotional rollercoaster. I was so impressed with the way they show her doubts, fears, and challenges in life as well as with family.
It's funny when appropriate and interesting throughout, while remaining respectful.

10. Café & Baunilha
Japanese Drama - 2019, 10 episodes
#10
Features a Queer SML, Yuki, who has unrequited feelings for the ML (Hiroto).
In Ep 9, we find out Yuki is in love with Hiroto. It's really one specific line that makes it clear and observing his behavior. We get to know next to nothing about Yuki though, let alone how he defines his sexuality. So I really can only feel comfortable calling him Queer. Shame he's also as manipulative, twisted, and toxic as everyone else in this drama.
I do NOT recommend watching this for the rep. I do not recommend watching this drama, period.
My thoughts on the drama itself: This is the first drama I'm rating 1/10. I just cannot think of anything redeeming about it whatsoever, any reason to recommend it to anyone, anything positive or so-bad-it's-good at all: Not even the Queer rep (one of my reasons for completing this).
The FL is a shivering bunny rabbit, a blob, a glob of jello with nary a spine to speak of who is there to be molded, shaped, and manipulated as anyone would like, without protest.
Every side character either wants to steal the ML from her or assault/force their feelings onto her. And after she inevitably gets saved by her "Knight in Shining Armor," she then forgives/apologizes to her assaulter and/or apologizes for being assaulted. Yay! Victim-blaming! ? *feel the intensity of my sarcasm*
And the ML? He is the "perfect" man. Except—wait—he's not. He's the walking, talking, living embodiment of a red flag. He lies, pressures, manipulates, and is toxic and overly possessive of the FL.
In other words, this is flaming hot garbage I wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole again, not even if you paid me.Can be found on Rakuten Viki

11. Yuri ou Outra
Japanese Drama - 2019, 8 episodes
#11
Right. The "rep."
Sometimes Kairi seems confident about her sexuality and will either directly call herself a Lesbian or indirectly say she is Bisexual, but the majority of the time she says her sexuality is "twisted" and makes claims that her childhood trauma is what made her the way she is now. Not only this but she will fall back on "friendship" rather than anything "more."
I think it goes without saying that this drama was not made to represent anyone in the LGBT+ community nor did it actually portray anyone LGBT+.Just gonna put my full review here because I can't seem to summarize the rest of my thoughts any more concisely
Well, I knew what I was getting into when I started this for the "rep."
I'm actually going to seemingly do things backward and answer the question usually reserved for the end of my review: Do I recommend it? Absolutely not!
There is touching without consent, unprovoked inappropriate and suggestive jokes and comments that either border on or are definitively sexual harassment, completely inaccurate statements, definitions, and comments about any sexuality other than heterosexuality, and constant excusing of stereotyping, bullying, stalking, harassment, and emotional/physical abuse.
All in all, this was like toxic soup for my brain.
You know what? I don't want to elaborate any further! I'm tired and this was awful.I do not recommend watching this. I watched it only to document the quality of the rep.
Non-Con/Dub-Con Warning!

12. Accomplishment of Fudanshi Bartender
Japanese Drama - 2022, 2 episodes

Doesn't actually feature any Queer characters but does feature a ML constantly shipping guys together. His sexuality is never stated.
Its outrageousness can be very funny. Some may find it too much though, and I can definitely see why. Lol.

13. Absolute BL
Japanese Special - 2021, 1 episode
#13
Features a side plot romance between two MLs, Ayato, the ML's brother, and Toujou.
The ML, Mob, finds himself to be in a "BL" world where there are almost no Straight people, and guys around him are dramatically and easily falling in love with other men like they're in a drama. He tries to do everything he can to avoid falling into his own romance.
By the end of this short series, though, Mob has himself a male love interest, Kikuchi, that he (reluctantly but clearly) has feelings for.
My thoughts on the drama itself: So overdramatic and fun! They go over the top, but it's never too much to the point that it's annoying.

14. Não Chame isso de Mistério
Japanese Drama - 2022, 12 episodes

I suspect the ML is Queer/Queer-coded, but don't quote me on that!
He says himself that he has had no feelings for a man or a woman but that he was interested in someone, Garo, a man who seemed to understand him and is fond of him.
My thoughts on the drama itself: While it could sometimes be predictable, I found this incredibly fun and engaging. And the main character is just a blast!

15. Sixteen Shoukougun
Japanese Drama - 2020, 8 episodes
#15
It's a crime this doesn't have a Sismance tag at the very least!
My thoughts on the drama itself: For the smaller details that add to this drama: the unique shots, cuts, camerawork, and music really lend to this drama's dark tone or light tone always nearing or having the potential to turn dark.
Obsession and trauma are the main themes of this drama. How much to hold on and how much to let go. As well as trying to overcome your past trauma and not let it consume you.
Sometimes, when we love people, we ignore the many red flags. The subtle manipulation and lying can become part of normalcy and we accept it all because we love them, care about them, and want them in our lives. But, that is not healthy. Manipulating and lying to someone in order to get them to spend time with you is not healthy.
This was a really dark and, at the same time, really sweet drama. I think the amount of episodes and length of them was perfect. A very solid 8.5/10 for me.Subbed Episodes on Irozuku fansubs

16. Casal Maio Dezembro
Japanese Drama - 2020, 8 episodes
#16
Features a vaguely Queer side character, Ricchan/Rion/Rion-chan (these are used almost interchangeably for this character), FL Maiko's second cousin, who has unrequited feelings for her. To avoid being redundant, I'm going to use Ricchan to refer to them. Also, I will be using they/them pronouns since how this character identifies/wishes to be viewed/referred to is rather unclear.
Ricchan is a puzzling character, rep-wise. They dress and style themself in stereotypically feminine clothes and makeup as well as masculine clothes, seemingly take no issue with being referred to as a guy, and also refer to when chatting with Maiko late at night as "girls' talk." The subtitles also only ever say he/him.
In Ep 5, after being introduced to Ricchan, despite them, frankly, being quite rude, ML Harumi asks how he should refer to them, "Nice to meet you, Rion. Or is it Rion-chan?" There is no sense of sarcasm or prejudice in his tone. He's respectful.
To which Ricchan says, "Either name is fine."
FL Maiko says, "Oh, he's dressed like a girl right now, but he's actually a boy."
Maiko also later says, "Ricchan and I were raised together like sisters, so he's like a family to me."
All this background info is to say that the only label I would feel comfortable putting on this character is Queer.
This character's vague Queerness, for the most part, felt like a non-issue. They are described as having a chaotic home life growing up with an unaccepting mother. But, in the present, the main characters treat them with nothing but respect (except when they try to sabotage/express disdain for Maiko and Harumi's marriage). Maiko, in particular, fully accepts Ricchan no matter how they present/act, always wanting to be there to support them. I just wish they would have made Ricchan's identity more clear.

17. Escolhendo o Cônjuge na Loteria
Japanese Drama - 2018, 8 episodes
#17
Features a Gay SML, Kitakaze, one of main ML Tatsuhiko's close friends, as well as a Lesbian SFL, Hikari, a reporter.
In Ep 7, Hikari comes out to her mother, Minister Yukiko Onodera (the one who is basically the face of the new law). What I most appreciated about this character is that she doesn't bend or break underneath her mother's hurtful comments. She fights back against her and even tries to make her understand, but she quickly sees the conversation isn't going anywhere. And you know what she does? She respects herself and leaves, saying, "I don't regret telling you. However, I was wrong to think that you would understand me."
In Ep 5, after having read Tasuhiko's blog and believing he might understand, Kitakaze comes out to him. Revealing everything pessimistic he said about marriage and love was to cover up his sexuality. This is yet another touching and effective moment in the drama that hits home how horrible the new law truly is. It's not just insulting, invasive, takes away others' free will, reinforces the idea that producing children is the only thing that gives a woman and a marriage value, it also pushes heteronormativity and is discriminatory in nature. And the drama doesn't just bring up LGBT+ people this one time and then stop here. After Ep 5, Queer people become a main talking point when discussing the law (Tatsuhiko researches and drafts an amendment to the Marriage by Lottery law, and while doing so, acknowledges he may not be the right person to speak for Queer people due to him being Straight but pushes on with the encouragement of others as he wants to help) and even aside from it. In this world of Japan, by the end, things appear hopeful. It seems that because of this once law, people are now taking notice and caring more about minorities, those who are LGBT+, disabled, ill, of a different nationality, etc.

18. Densetsu no Head Sho
Japanese Drama - 2024, 8 episodes

Ep 6 features a Transgender SFL, Cinderalla. Transphobia is not present (in fact, her sister fully accepts her and affirms her gender).
The episode is centered around her but doesn't really dig deep into her character.
The description of this drama seems a bit complicated, but it does somewhat pique my interest, so I may just watch it in the future. At that time, I will update this accordingly.

19. Shefu wa Mei Tantei
Japanese Drama - 2021, 9 episodes
#19
CW. Will update accordingly.
Features a Lesbian SFL, Kaneko Yuki. The reveal to the viewers occurs in Ep 4 (related to FL Ayaka's story). She mentions how she felt supported by Chef Mifune and Shimura in that they didn't change anything when she came out to them.
Additionally, Ep 4 features a Transgender FL, Kishibe Ayaka, a pâtissière (a pastry chef) working at one of FL Suzuko Hatano's restaurants. We learn about how her parents are unaccepting and that being a pâtissière in a female-only space has made her feel more comfortable in her identity. I won't spoil her whole arc in the episode; you'll just have to watch it for yourself! What I will say is that I loved the message they had, "A woman is a woman." A.K.A. Trans women ARE women!

20. Raise de wa Chanto Shimasu
Japanese Drama - 2020, 12 episodes
#20
Features a main Bi/Pan FL, Momoe, an AroAce FL, Ume, a Transgender SFL, Nagi, a Lesbian SFL, Seira, and a Queer ML, Masaru.
Regarding Momoe, she doesn't label herself. Ep 7 sees her sleeping with a woman named Seira and afterward simply silently accepting herself as open to being with more than just men.
Regarding Ume, while listening to Momoe's sex escapades, she actively expresses that she has no sexual or romantic desires and basically prefers to observe from afar (specifically, she has what you could call a fetish for Gay guys and likes to imagine her male coworkers as being together/uses them as writing inspiration). In Ep 7, after going to a Lesbian bar with Momoe, she realizes her disinterest in relationships extends to women as well and concludes, ". . . Regardless of gender, love itself is impossible for me."
Regarding Nagi, while I do refer to her using she/her pronouns and call her a Trans woman, it should be noted that she doesn't claim herself to be a girl/woman to Masaru; in fact, when they first start messaging, she 'admits' "I'm a guy." However, she is feminine-presenting, gets upset when she gets deadnamed and corrects others, and likes to be referred to as Masaru's "girlfriend."
Regarding Masaru, I refer to him as Queer because while he does accept and act on his attraction to Nagi, he, unfortunately, for the most part, views her/refers to her as a man.
Overall, I found the rep to be a mixed bag.
My thoughts on the drama itself: A very unique and entertaining watch. But the narrator calling Momoe a "slut" really got on my nerves! Shouldn't the whole point of this drama series be to show people who live their lives differently/have different relationships than others as being something that's acceptable? Calling the main FL a slut goes against that if you ask me.

I found this rep to be spectacular. A badass fighter with a cool attitude, secret determination, and an interesting backstory who just happens to be Trans? What's not to love?

#28
Features a Transgender ML, Kanzaki Mitsuru (birth name Hiura Mizuki), with seemingly unrequited feelings for SFL Nishiwaki Risako (who is married to ML Nishiwaki Tetsuro).
Something to note is that Mitsuru's friends continue to deadname him, calling him Mizuki. He doesn't ask them to stop or request they call him Mitsuru, though, so I have to assume he's either tolerating it/is alright with it.
In the first episode, we learn that Mitsuru was married (to SML Hirokawa Yukio) and had a child before deciding to live his truth as a man. He couldn't take pretending to be a woman anymore and, without a word, left divorce papers and never reached out to his ex-husband again. From what we hear/see about their past relationship, Mitsuru never seemed to have any feelings for Yukio. He does admit to Tetsuro that since university, he has had feelings for Risako and that he only slept with Tetsuro to try to force himself to continue "being a woman." He goes on to describe how Tetsuro has always been his "ideal man," as in he wishes he had his body.
I appreciated how they portrayed Mitsuru's struggles with gender dysphoria in such a raw way. His period returning after he is temporarily forced to stop his hormone injections is gut-wrenching. And even though he is hiding from the police, the idea of dressing as a woman again to hide is something he can't bear. Another example: After kissing Risako, he begs Tetsuro to punch him because if he were "really a man," he would. He so desperately wants to be viewed by the people around him and feel like a "real man."
My thoughts on the drama itself: This was an ambitious project that fell short. They portrayed gender dysphoria and invalidation of one's gender identity in such a painfully real way. But with the plot only getting more convoluted as time went on and repeated deadnaming only adding to the confusion, I'm left disappointed as well as a bit irritated.

30. Meu Nome é Chihiro
Japanese Movie - 2023
#30
Features an Aromantic Heterosexual FL, Chihiro, as well as a Transgender SFL, Basil.
Regarding Chihiro, she says she doesn't need or want love (she used to think so) but does say she wants sex. I think you could quite easily interpret, based on her conversation with Basil, that she is Aromantic Heterosexual:
Basil: "Don't you ever fall in love? I've always wondered about that. You never seem to be attached to anyone. What I mean is, don't you want someone just for you? To want someone so much that it hurts? You don't have those feelings?"
Chihiro: "I did a long time ago. I thought love was meant to be like that. But these days . . . I don't believe that. You cannot own someone's heart exclusively. Also, I don't want to be owned. I realized, if love is about owning, well, then I don't need love."
Basil: "But what about making love? You don't need that either?"
Chihiro: "That's a slightly different story. A bit like needing to drink water to live."
Basil: "Yeah, but it's nice to love them."
Chihiro: "You might think that's important. I don't really need to have feelings for them."
Basil: "I don't understand that."
Chihiro: "Well, I have found on this planet many others like me."My thoughts on the movie itself: What a dreamy movie. It felt like going on a long and slow walk around your hometown in the middle of the day.
Chihiro keeps such a positive outlook and attitude about life. It was sad to see her have such a full heart and spread so much joy in her community only to be alone so often. I feel it was the movie's way of quietly expressing how society had shunned her for her past as a sex worker, though.
How wonderful that she did find her people.

31. Konya Sukiyaki Dayo
Japanese Drama - 2023, 12 episodes
#31
Features an Aromantic FL, Asano Tomoko. And guess what, you guys, her Aromanticism is not just clear based on what she says, but she actually says ALOUD that she's Aromantic!
Now, this is just me personally, but I believe it would be an accurate read to also call her AroAce. I say this as while she clearly expresses her disinterest in romance, she never expresses/appears to have an interest in sex. Maybe she just feels more comfortable calling herself Aromantic/identifies with her Aromanticism more than her Asexuality? Or, maybe if we saw her in a second season she would come to identify with being Asexual as well/specifically address her disinterest in sex. Again, this is just me speculating. Since she does call herself Aromantic here, I will go along with what she confirms and not place the label AroAce onto her.
My thoughts on the drama itself: A lighthearted yet critical take on how love and expectations are casually placed on people just going about their day or making personal decisions.
The discussions and the way they approached topics such as relationship dynamics and what makes/should make a "family" were handled so well.
I cannot recommend this slice-of-life drama to you enough, especially for those starved for Aro ep.Link to Drama Otaku page with raws and subs (will need an account): https://drama-otaku.com/drama/konya-sukiyaki-dayo/

32. 17,3 Sobre o amor
Japanese Drama - 2020, 9 episodes
#32
Features an AroAce (Aromantic Asexual) FL, Hara Tsumugi, as well as a Pansexual ML, Asahi Yu.
Regarding Asahi Yu, he speaks openly about having thought he was Gay and realizing after falling for the FL, Seino Sakura, that gender plays no factor in his attraction. He also says the word! *happy yelps*
Regarding Hara, it should be noted that she does use the term Asexual to describe both being Asexual and Aromantic. While I will not invalidate a person choosing to use whatever term/label they are comfortable with, this does misinform viewers who are not already familiar with the Ace/Aro Spectrum. Asexual ≠ Aromantic. Those who are Asexual are not necessarily Aromantic as well. Likewise, those who are Aromantic are not necessarily Asexual.
Brownie Points: Discusses various topics related to sex; including consent, condoms, first times, etc.

However, the scene gets erased as things are "progressing too fast" between them. After they're separated for a while, in the end, he is faced with a love triangle with him, Sikuchi, and a new character, Hatano (SML).
My thoughts on the drama itself: Another insanely creative and hilarious season!
The Takan Yoho reference about had me dead!?

35. Kamisama no Ekohiiki
Japanese Drama - 2022, 8 episodes
#35
I'm not spoiling this one or going into specifics as the drama itself is all about the confusing and wide spectrum of attraction and sexuality.
Basically everyone was Bi/Pan. I loved this so much! To have a main cast not be primarily attracted to just one gender and actually show it/talk about it was beyond refreshing.
And the amount of time they devoted to the characters questioning their attraction/feelings as well as questioning the very meaning of love was wonderful to see.
Is it the personality, the appearance, or both? Is your love not "real love" if a change in the body of the object of your affections "turns you off?"
This is just a taste of how in-depth the conversations were.
Also, there was some gender-questioning as well that was respectfully done.
If you haven't seen it yet, do. Consider it highly recommended from yours truly.Brownie Points: The iconic chihuahua!

36. Hanzawa Naoki
Japanese Drama - 2013, 10 episodes
#36
Features a Gay SML, Kurosaki Shunichi.
In Ep 1, some coworkers/friends of Hanzawa say to him, in reference to Kurosaki, who works with the Taxation Bureau, "Be careful with that Gay guy Kurosaki." They don't warn him in reference to his sexuality, though (as if he's some creep/predator); rather, his background working as an auditor at the Financial Services Agency. It seems the comment about his sexuality was a stray negative comment simply to add on.
Very brief and not positive rep, if you ask me.

37. Jitenshaya-san no Takahashi-kun
Japanese Drama - 2022, 8 episodes
#37
Features two Gay SMLs, Yamamoto Koki, FL Tomoko's coworker, and Takahashi Shinji, ML Ryohei's father. The rep here is really, really brief. I cannot stress that enough. Ryohei's father only makes an appearance in Ep 5 when Ryohei and Tomoko are eating at a restaurant and run into him (he is cross-dressing, but it is confirmed in Ep 7 that he is Gay—they do not say he is a trans woman, so I am taking the drama at its word). And Koki comes out to his grandmother in a short scene in Ep 7 (it's a difficult conversation but ends well).
As this rep is really blink and you miss it, I don't feel I can say much about it. The side characters in this drama more so served to push the lead's stories further and/or provide insight into their personalities anyway. I wouldn't say they did a bad job, though, these brief moments of representation were fine, just not memorable as they didn't attempt to make them a focus of the story at any point.

39. É amor! Yankee-kun e a Garota da Bengala Branca
Japanese Drama - 2021, 10 episodes
#39
Features a Gay SML, Shishio.
Ep 7 reveals Shishio's sexuality/love for ML Morio when he tells SFL Izumi he cannot return her feelings, confessing the person he likes is a man. Izumi and him become close after this. Ep 10 sees Morio showing up when he's sick and Izumi's over. Shishio says, "I asked someone important to come take care of me." When Morio expresses his relief, he confesses, "Morio, I liked you. Even now, I always kept it in." Morio smiles and, sounding emotional, jokes with him about him being shy/never realizing. He then says, "However, I have Yukio, you see. So what is the right answer? Sorry? No, it's thank you." Shishio then, after talking about his past, says, "What supported me at the time was that I had someone I had feelings for. But now it seems I found some important to me. That's why it's okay. " When he goes back inside, he discovers Izumi overheard and she already knew he liked Morio. Shishio then says his important person is her now: "But my feelings of care for you are different from love. To be honest, even in the future, I don't think I will ever fall in love with a woman. But if you're okay with it, I want us to be together."
All of this to say, despite Shishio deciding to "be with" Izumi, I believe he is Gay rather than Bi. Also, Morio not just saying he doesn't like men kind of leads me to think he's some flavor of Queer, just saying!

40. Formigas sem Guarda-Chuvas
Japanese Drama - 2016, 4 episodes
#40
Will add more info
Features a Gay SML, Keisuke Murata.
My thoughts on the drama itself: They manage to add a lot of depth to the characters in so short an amount of time. It's really well-done. That, and it's shot and lit in a way that fits the mood of every scene. It starts comedic but then quickly goes dark. There were a few instances where I thought the writing of the dialogue could have been better, but for the most part I found it convincing and moving (probably because of the actors doing a damn good job).
Overall, I found it quite touching and I felt a bit like I was getting a peak into the intimate details of real peoples lives. In a way, I felt I didn't earn the right to know their personal stories so quickly. But, I felt honored as well. Can be found on free websites

41. Ie Uru Onna no Gyakushu
Japanese Drama - 2019, 10 episodes
#41
Features a Gay SML, Adachi.
He has his own compelling side story and is generally more present here than in the first series. The first series set up the possibility of him being Gay so it came naturally and easily when it was included here.
Also, there was an entire episode basically dedicated to discussing LGBT+ people and them living in a conservative Japanese society. There were some mistakes made in the explanations and outdated definitions, but they did a good job for the most part of respectfully talking about and showcasing the community. I appreciated it :)

43. Boy's Abyss
Japanese Drama - 2022, 8 episodes
#43
Features a Gay SML, Minegishi Gen, ML Reiji's clasamate who tries to keep him under his control. In Ep 3, we find out he's not just possessive of Reiji but actually loves him. The final episode sees him directly confessing to Reiji (who has no idea how to respond to this).
This drama is such a heavy and incredibly alarming/conflicting watch that I really can't recommend you watch it solely for the rep. It's not as though the rep is bad or good at all anyway: Just something to note.
My thoughts on the drama itself: I'm in awe and disturbed. This is pure corruption and despair that is perhaps beautiful? Sincere yet the worst lie ever told? I'm not sure how to explain how it made me feel. All I know is I couldn't tear my eyes away from the darkness I was staring directly into; my soul may have been dragged into the Abyss by the end.

Features two Bisexual MLs, Ritsu and Satoru.
When I first saw the tags I assumed there would only be one Bi character. It was a nice surprising twist for me.
Ritsu was very obvious and I suspected Satoru and was glad they actually confirmed it instead of keeping me guessing.
With Ritsu you are either going to feel for him or dislike/hate him. Either way, if you are looking for a very interesting watch maybe give this one a go. Japanese Drama - 2022, 10 episodes
#46
Features a Bisexual ML, Hanabusa Shiro. This drama doesn't actually feature a romance between the two main MLs. It's really more an intense Bromance that you could picture leading to a relationship sometime in the future.
My thoughts on the drama itself: I started this because the feed posts intrigued me. It was very much comedic yet sultry detective noir, particularly with how it was shot.
I was not disappointed.
Don't start this if you're looking for big action scenes or intense romance.
Do start this if you're a well-delivered-dialogue junkie and enjoy a subtle and unique connection that is playful yet earnest.

47. Embaralhando o Amor
Japanese Drama - 2009, 10 episodes
#47
Features a Bisexual ML, Masato Kikuta, as well as an indirect/background Bi ML (his past lover).
In Ep 7, he directly tells Airu and Usami that he's not Gay but Bi. He said THE WORD! *gasps* Boy, do I love it when they do that! They get brownie points just for that!
You know, for an older J-Drama, I was quite pleasantly surprised with the ease with which Queer people were discussed and the sheer non-toxic masculinity present (the men cry, rant, and bemoan life as much as the women, if not more, and show equal or zero shame for it—also when ML Ojiro kisses ML Usami to make up for kissing FL Mei, even though Usami is a bit shocked he's not upset and readily agrees that he has soft lips ). For example, in just the first episode, Ojiro casually drops in the fact that he takes pictures of all types of women, including Trans women. Now, he does use the term "Transsexual," which practically everyone has left behind. Of course, it's anyone's guess if this was just the subber's translation choice or if it's actually the specific term he used.
Overall, a surprisingly Queer-friendly drama that I would recommend.
My thoughts on the drama itself: A sitcom-humor-style drama that marched at its own pace. Made me confused on many an occasion but never truly annoyed. Rather, amused.

This drama perfectly captures what it's like to not be Straight and be in the closet.
You can go through life "comfortably" if you only ignore one of the biggest parts of yourself. But, you can't completely. Because, it's who you are.
I hope in the end Jun does find himself Somebody To Love. Not someone he feels like he has to love or should love.Brownie Points: The use of Queen's music. What a marvelous choice for this drama! 50. O Marido do Meu Irmão
Japanese Drama - 2018, 3 episodes

Features a Gay ML, Mike Flanagan (the Canadian widower of ML Ryoji), with a focus on family and fighting/overcoming prejudice. Also, has two Gay SMLs: Kazuya, a student who hears about Mike from his younger brother and seeks comfort from him and chooses him as the first person to come out to in his life, and Katoyan, Ryoji's classmate who had unrequited feelings for him.
My thoughts on the drama itself: What a tender story about love, family, and acceptance. It was filled with warmth. And Kana was such a precious, curious, and kind little girl! Truly stole the show!

51. Kashimashi Meshi
Japanese Drama - 2023, 8 episodes
#51
Features a Gay ML, Amagai Eiji, and an indirectly mentioned/shown Bi/Pan—I say Bi/Pan because all we know is that he dated Eiji as well as Oda Chiharu (FL) at different points in his life—ML, Tomio (the man whose passing brought the three friends the drama centers around together).
Regarding Eiji, he talks about his sexuality himself, is open about his past with Tomio, and is completely accepted by his friends (they not only casually mention his boyfriend but also root for his love life in general as well as attentively listen to his struggles). While he does break up with the aforementioned boyfriend, Tatsuya, and later finds himself having unrequited feelings for a—presumably—Straight man, Eitaro, by the end of the drama he is in a good place and has opened himself up to pursuing his passions despite his fears.
My thoughts on the drama itself: This was a lighthearted yet mature foodie drama about coming together when you need to and leaving when you need to: ultimately, being understanding of your friends' desires in life that will set them on different paths.
I was sad to see it end.

52. Double
Japanese Drama - 2022, 10 episodes
#52
Features a Gay ML, Takarada Takara, who has feelings for ML Kamoshima Yujin. Ep 8 sees him admitting it to SML Kurotsu Soichi as well as, without directly saying it, confessing to Yujin. Yujin kisses him but expresses his doubt now that all the time Takara spent with him doing plays was all in pursuit of sex or a romantic relationship with him. Takara denies this, saying he looked up to him and wanted to be like him. Then, Yujin himself says, "You are the only one for me."
After completing this drama, I must admit, a part of me doubts whether that night of Takara confessing to Yujin and Yujin expressing his own feelings, ever happened. If it did, I would say that Yujin is also Queer. My thoughts on the drama itself: Double is truly revolutionary. The characters of Takara and Yujin and their relation to each other: an all-encompassing web. It's needing, wanting, imitating, creating, lusting, hating, agonizing, obsessing, craving, dying, and reincarnation.
Made in my own image? Made in his image? A unique creation or a modified copy? Whatever the case, the image staring back appears to be my double.Link to Subbed Episodes (need to have an account): https://www.d-addicts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=166125

Features a Gay ML, Ichikawa Ryo, who has feelings for ML Toyama Hikaru. There are a few times where we get glimpses of Hikaru maybe feeling something for Ryo, but nothing is confirmed.
My thoughts on the drama itself: I don't necessarily mind an open ending with a hinted future romance. But when you spend the majority of your time on a poorly built-up mystery, all the while teasing about two of the leads getting together, I'm left with nothing to really fall back on. What did I watch this for?

Japanese Drama - 2022, 9 episodes
#55
Features two Gay MLs, Riku and Yuma, as well a side romance between two MLs, Satsuki's father, Kotaro (who is basically confirmed as being Bi), and Shinji.
Regarding Riku, he used to be together with Yuma (before his father, worry, and pressure from society made Yuma decide to leave). He ends up dating Satsuki for a time and expresses his feelings for her. You'd think this would lead me to conclude he's Bi, but no. During the last few episodes, it becomes painfully clear that while Riku does care for Satsuki, he's trying to "see her as a woman" while really holding onto his deep feelings for Satsuki. In the end, I think he was never IN love with her.
Regarding Satsuki's father, Kotaro, I believe his being Bi is more than clear. The topic of him being with Satsuki's mother for so long before Shinji gets openly discussed by him, Shinji, and others and finally leads to Satsuki understanding that her father really did love her mother at that time, and now he loves a man. Shinji is even open with Satsuki about how he used to feel anxious about it but then took the time to talk to Kotaro, ask him questions, and express his fears. That he wondered if Kotaro might be suffering more than him and that it must be painful not being understood by the people you want to understand you. All in all, I found this a well-done representation of Biphobia and the stigmas that come with it.Link to Drama Otaku page with subs with no raws linked there (will need an account): https://drama-otaku.com/drama/prism/

56. Escola dos Romances Proibidos
Japanese Drama - 2024, 8 episodes
#56
Features a side romance between two MLs, Yuma and Ruka. In Ep 4, it's hinted that they are interested in each other. Ep 5 confirms that they have been secretly seeing each other since the school trip. Ruka has come to terms with and is okay with his sexuality being known. Yuma, on the other hand, is still scared and concerned with others' opinions. What I thought was really interesting is how this episode brought up the unfair double standards between Straight couples and Queer couples. The school doesn't consider two men being together to be a real romantic relationship, so it does not enforce the rule and expel them. Meanwhile, they do nothing when their photo gets spread, and they face backlash.
Also features a Queer SFL, Sawa, who has unrequited feelings for SFL Yuzuki. In Ep 1, she tries to kiss her but gets rejected. This ends up prompting her to become a Rabbit Hunter and go after/expose other students for being in relationships. But she does eventually grow as a person and stands up for herself and others.
My thoughts on the drama itself: It was an interesting watch, and I liked that they didn't have perfect protagonists. But I wished they had delved more into the characters. I cared about them, but I felt they didn't give me enough to truly get invested.
Additionally, I got incredibly frustrated by them equating love/romance with sex. Because, excuse me, Asexual people exist! Also, are you telling me it wasn't love until they had sex? That Sexual Attraction=Romantic Attraction? Because, newsflash, it doesn't!Can be found on Netflix

Japanese Drama - 2019, 6 episodes
#57
Features a side plot romance between two MLs, Ikeda Yujiro and Hamaguchi Daisuke. They state themselves that they are Gay and even come out to most people around them.
This short web series explored very well the often conflicting feelings Queer people feel toward their own sexuality as well as how they view society's place in their lives.
I have to share what the ML, Junta, said when Daisuke came out to him. It's what I and everyone else in the LGBT+ community deserves to hear:
"Thanks for telling me. I think it's wonderful. You'll definitely become happy. With the person you love. Without a doubt."
My thoughts on the drama itself: Life. That's what this is about. Just, life. The joy, suffering, advantages, struggles, and changes of many different people with different mindsets as they take in air another day.
This was something special. I could already tell from the description, comments, and reviews. But now that uniqueness has been made fully clear to me.Link to Subbed Episodes: https://www.rjgman56subs.com/post/shujinko

58. Minha Confusão de Amor!
Japanese Drama - 2021, 10 episodes
#58
Main romance between two MLs.
Regarding Aoki, he was a wonderful and respectful representation of Bisexuality. It was also delightfully easy to show. He was in love with Hashimoto and then he fell in love with Ida. Simple. He didn't declare that he "doesn't like boys and just likes him" (I hate that trope so much) nor was there any line indicating he never truly loved Hashimoto and was just "confused." He didn't deny his past love and also accepted his present love. I could cry!
I think this was as perfect Bi representation as you could get without actually saying the word Bisexual.Regarding Ida, I concur with @starrynights in that I think Demiromantic Asexual is a valid interpretation of him. Before Aoki, he doesn't have feelings for anyone or even know how to tell if he does, and it takes truly getting to know him for him to develop them. Also, he doesn't express any interest in having a more physically intimate relationship with Aoki once they are together.

Main romance between two MLs.
My thoughts on the drama itself: This was a quiet and reflective story with a romance to match. There wasn't a big coming out but it also didn't seem to be a world where everyone would accept it.
This is a sad story. But not in the typical way since it's really what everyone, including Koichi and Mitchan—as well as us—knew was going to happen: This was inevitable. But at least we had the time we did.
I would recommend it. Just . . . Prepare a box of tissues.

61. More than Words
Japanese Drama - 2022, 10 episodes
#61
Main romance between two MLs, Makio and Eiji. As well as a later main romance between two MLs, Makio and Asato.
Regarding Eiji, in the very first episode, when Mieko and Makio are speculating about him maybe being Gay because of his hairstyle, etc., after overhearing them, he asks how they knew and admits he realized he was Gay recently. Later on, he does get into a "relationship" with Mieko. While he does say he likes her once, I honestly don't believe he does in the way he's pretending to. More that he cares for and the child she provided for him, but not something like deep romantic feelings and/or physical attraction. Which is why I believe he is truly Gay, unfortunately living denying himself real happiness due to societal and parental pressure to conform to what is "normal."
Regarding Makio, with how much he expresses his non-interest in the gender of the people he may or may not be attracted to, I think it is likely he is Bi/Pan.
Regarding Asato, he never labels himself as anything. He has a relationship of comfort and physical intimacy with Makio and, in a tender moment, tells him that rather than "liking him," he deeply cares for him. All of this makes me reluctant to put a specific label on him, if any. If you wanted to call him anything, I think that would be Queer.

They did an amazing job making them feel like a couple that has been together for a long time and knows each other very well. And they had fun banter :)
I also loved how comforting it was, and the great narrations and importance placed on cooking. It felt like eating a hot bowl of soup on a rainy day.Side Note: They don't really show physical affection. I didn't feel this took away from the drama, but some did.

Japanese Drama - 2021, 6 episodes

Main romance between two MLs.
Regarding Hira, he doesn't do the awful "I don't like guys, I just like you" trope. What he says about his own sexuality when Kiyoi asks him if he likes guys is "I don't know. But . . . I don't like other guys. Or girls. You're the only one I think is beautiful. You're the only special one." Now, the subs did change a bit for this scene (I prefer the original as it fits better).

67. Ossan's Love: No Céu
Japanese Drama - 2019, 8 episodes
#67
Main romance between two MLs with a very prominent love triangle. Coming out or confusion about sexuality also isn't an issue here.
Regarding SML Reiji, he is most definitely Bi. In Ep 6, he says to ML Haruta, "I'm fine with either guys or girls."
My thoughts on the drama itself: It's not nearly as heartfelt as the original series. But it is just as funny!

Main romance between two MLs with a pretty prominent love triangle.
My thoughts on the drama itself: I stumbled across this one quite randomly and my only thought was that it looked a bit interesting and there seemed to be a large fan base for it. I'm so happy I gave it a shot!
It was so ridiculous, over-the-top, heartfelt, weird, cheesy, and funny.
I was glad at the times when Haruta finally stood up for himself. And, despite his many shortcomings and odd behavior, he was still believably charming.
This drama is just so fun to watch! I had no idea where things were going to go at times, I just knew it was going to be a wild ride.
I really enjoyed my time watching this drama. I enjoyed it so much that I moved around my time for other dramas just to get to this sooner. Can be found on Rakuten Viki or free websites

This just brought a soft smile to my face. Food, family, and connection. So peaceful :)
Side Note: It was such a relief for Minoru's father to be completely supportive of his relationship with Yutaka and push for them to be together. Really lent to the light tone and made for a soothing watch.

Neither of the MLs addresses their sexuality. What I will say is that they both kind of gave me Demiromantic/Pan vibes. But that's just me.
My thoughts on the drama itself: The tenderness, consideration, adoration, and pure heart-fluttering present here were enough to make me sprout wings.
You really can't beat a well-crafted friends-to-lovers with intense mutual pining. When it's good, there's nothing like it.

74. Amor Venenoso
Japanese Drama - 2024, 12 episodes
#74
Main romance between two MLs.
My thoughts on the drama itself: A wonderfully wholesome romance and fun law drama with the best partners in every sense. This is a good apple.
Ryoma was a passionate lawyer as well as a riot of a human. A delightful tsundere, with his L-like eccentricities and constant overanalyzing of situations and talking to himself/his succulents. What I loved the most about him, though, was his steadfastness for Haruto. No matter who or what tried to get in the way (including Haruto himself), he stood firm and said, "This is my partner."
And Haruto. Haruto at first appeared to be a suspiciously shiny apple. Enchanting, but clearly, something is under the surface. Once he felt safe with Ryoma, though, he slowly let his real self show. His hurt, fear, and overwhelming love he had to give. I adored his confidence, resilience, and unconditional support for Ryoma.
I hate to say goodbye to this wonderful pairing and their little succulent family.
Brownie Points: My man Ryoma (ML) was the MVP of accepting his feelings and standing by his man! He said, "Homophobes? I don't respect those people! My job, forget it if I can't be with Haruto!"

75. Takara no Vidro
Japanese Drama - 2024, 10 episodes
#75
Main romance between two MLs.
My thoughts on the drama itself: This was a sparking marble in the grass for me.
The first couple of episodes, while charming, had me fearing mediocrity. But over time, I grew to see a surprising level of quiet depth and maturity in the leads. These young men have been hurt and are still dealing with hurt. One is more naive and hopeful, though, while the other is disillusioned with reality and terrified.
Takara's fight to not fall into the same depths as his mother and fear of himself the moment he mirrors her behaviors, even slightly, in particular, stood out to me.
"If I want something, I must have it."
What it must be like to fear your own wants and feel the need to push your desires aside in case you just might take a treasure into your hands, keep it from the world, and unwillingly crush it.
I would like others to see what I did, but I understand if you don't. Regardless, I found this a precious watch that I almost want to keep to myself. My own "treasure."

Main romance between two MLs.
Regarding Amane, he is generally out but on various occasions feels the need to conceal his feelings/sexuality due to his past negative experiences around people with regard to his sexuality/coming out and/or joke about it to make others more comfortable while hurting himself.
Regarding Ryuji, he never addresses his sexuality. After Amane confesses to him and tries to brush it off and Ryuji insists on addressing it, we learn he hasn't had a friend confess to him before and so it all confused him. He then asks Amane what he wants from the confession, and when he says he wants to date him he responds, "I never thought of dating, or being in a relationship like lovers or something like that with you. The truth is I can't imagine it. But I myself think that liking you might be good. I won't act like nothing happened and it won't be like before. Now that I know you like me. So . . . Please . . . Make it one-sided for a while."
In the last episode, he says, "My feeling now is not quite enough to say I like you in the same way you feel for me. But I think if I could meet someone because I want to, it would be good to be you. If that's the privilege of being a lover, then I want to date you."
If you ask me, I think he might be Demiromantic. What I got from his words is he likely has never been in love and that it takes quality time to get to know a person as well as time to analyze himself to understand his/develop feelings for someone.
My thoughts on the drama itself: Sweet summery goodness! This was such an easy, breezy, soothing romance. And I loved how it ended on a beautifully simple night with a desire to linger together, where the air itself seemed electrified with potential.
Consent Highlight: Amane asks to kiss Ryuji and Ryuji later asks to kiss Amane :)

79. BL Drama no Shuen ni Narimashita: Crank Up Hen

Regarding ML Aoyagi Hajime, he mentions that he did have a girlfriend in the past. Other than this, his sexuality isn't really brought up, though he does come to terms with and admit his feelings for ML Akafuji Yuichiro. With this limited info, I think it's rather likely he's Bisexual.
My thoughts on the drama itself: This was a hilarious little gem of a series with a great deal of charm to it. I found myself bursting out laughing multiple times during each episode. I really had the best time watching this.

81. 25 Ji, Akasaka de
Japanese Drama - 2024, 10 episodes
#81
Main romance between two MLs.
My thoughts on the drama itself: The pacing of this drama was a near-masterclass, at least to me. With an exciting lead-in, the MLs' relationship seemed to move at break-neck speed (on the surface) but was full of reflection, fear, and carefully said words. Many might disagree, but I found the flashback episodes a perfect "interruption" to dive deeper into both their current mentalities and past states, which put actions taken when they met again into a whole new light. I felt excited seeing everything laid out and awaiting their next interaction, armed with all the new information presented to me. In particular, I loved the execution of Asami's story.
Final note: I must say, the love scene? Felt like I was watching living, breathing art comprised of two people brimming over with feelings, desperately needing and reaching for each other, physically connecting, all while begging with their eyes, "Please, stay. Please, be here with me." Take notes, other dramas! Take notes!

My thoughts on the drama itself: It was light and charming. And the two MLs were so thoughtful with their words and actions, always considering the other.
I found it beautiful how their feelings were so pure they cried when confessing. Even just glancing at each other, you could truly see the love overflowing from their eyes.
Also, the friends shaking hands and literally confirming they hopped aboard the "ship?" Comedy gold!

My thoughts on the drama itself: This was just so funny! Not as hilarious as Kieta Hatsukoi, of course, but it had me bursting out into hysterical laughter at least once every episode.
Kouta was an iconic character. "Fuck the law" and "I don't care if I look like a stalker" just killed me!
Also, the consent was great!
Give it a shot when you have the time.Consent Highlight: He saw he seemed a bit uncomfortable but wasn't saying anything so he just gave him a kiss on the cheek and said he would wait to kiss him when he agrees. My heart ❤

87. O Fim do Mundo Com Você
Japanese Drama - 2023, 8 episodes
#87
Main romance between two MLs as well as, in my opinion, a Gender-Questioning—could also be Trans but I think that's less likely—character, they (I'm using they/them since it seems unclear what pronouns this character would prefer) go by the name Kagami Meguru. We also got a Queer SFL, Madoka (through flashbacks it is revealed that she was dating a woman).
Regarding Meguru, they are feminine-presenting. As to their own gender identity, when "found out" they say the following to Ritsu and Masumi: "For one, I don't want to necessarily become a girl. The truth is . . . My hobby is uploading erotic selfies on social media. I just never had the courage to step outdoors dressed like a girl. That's why I decided to try it out before dying."
Regarding Ritsu, he himself states that he is Bi.
Regarding Masumi, he himself states that he is Gay.
My thoughts on the drama itself: I didn't like some of the comments they made regarding suicide, but overall, I found this drama a worthwhile watch.

Main romance between two MLs. Coming out or confusion about sexuality also isn't an issue here.
My thoughts on the drama itself: Well, this was a weird but fun watch that could only come from Japan!
I really liked how, when it came down to it, this was about two kind-of-kinky people who just hadn't had a proper conversation with each other about where they're at in their relationship, with one lead being terribly dense and unwilling/anxious to fully voice his desires and concerns and the other being forward physically all the while desperately craving simple but meaningful things from his lover: quality time together outside of sex, being relied on, being greeted at the door, and verbal expressions of affection.
All in all, I would recommend this sometimes frustrating drama. Can be found on Rakuten Viki or GagaOOLala

89. O Amor É Melhor na Segunda Vez
Japanese Drama - 2024, 6 episodes
#89
Main romance between two MLs.
My thoughts on the drama itself: This drama hit the ground running with a great opening to hook in viewers. From there, things only seemed to get better, with creative stylistic cuts and smooth comparisons between the MLs in the past and present. These two also had a great teasing push-and-pull dynamic to their relationship—they were delightfully sharp and to the point in their retorts.
However, I'm sad to say that I felt like this drama ended with a whimper in the last episode. Not necessarily like they rushed things, but that the key points along the way didn't hit right.
I'd say it's worth a watch; just don't expect a masterpiece. Can be found on GagaOOLala

90. Tóquio em Abril É…
Japanese Drama - 2023, 8 episodes
#90
Main romance between two MLs.
Okay. Let's talk rep. Specifically, Kazuma (main ML), since Ren completely and openly embraces his sexuality. Kazuma does not struggle with his feelings for Ren. But accepting his clear Queerness? I definitely think so.
Maybe it was just the imperfect translation of some important lines, but based on what was said in a key scene in Ep 7 as well as in previous episodes (Ren and others constantly say Kazuma's not Gay and he completely goes along with it and/or responds that he just likes Ren or something else incredibly vague) there's really a valid reading that they used the "I just like you" rather than have Kazuma be a legitimately Queer character. And I am NOT a fan of that being a valid reading! The "I just like you" is a years old, horribly tired, and annoying trope from Thai BLs that should be dead already, not reappearing in a J-BL in 2023. I mean, it could be they were trying to say he's Pan without actually saying it, but if so, they failed (in my opinion). Finishing this drama, I was just left with a bad taste in my mouth as far as how they were/were not having him label his sexuality. Like, clearly, at the very least, he likes men. Therefore, not Straight. Therefore, some flavor of the rainbow. So what gives?
We need to not only stop treating Bi/Pan people like they don't exist but also like the terms don't exist. You can use the word!
My thoughts on the drama itself: It had all the ingredients for an excellent drama: Solid acting, gorgeous cinematography, a compelling backstory, and an interesting direction to take the plot. However, I felt something was lacking. I can't put my finger on it exactly. Finishing it, though, I just feel . . . Incomplete, somehow.

93. Hidamari ga Kikoeru
Japanese Drama - 2024, 12 episodes
#93
Main romance between two MLs.
My thoughts on the drama itself: As someone who adored the film adaptation and has gone back to it again and again and again, this was pretty darn faithful, showing how one meaningful connection can expand someone's world and how all you really need is one person to see and understand you, just one.
I liked how this Taichi showed more of an interest in Kohei right off the bat, which led to some lovely, thoughtful moments. And Kohei was more forward with his feelings in his own way. However, over time, I did begin to feel like the drama was dragging its feet. By making Taichi more attached to Koehi but also more dense, there was this constant circling around his feelings. And while I, of course, was happy to see them explore hearing loss and the different perspectives and struggles of people who are deaf/hard of hearing, I think it took away valuable time that could have been spent with Taichi and Kohei. While they focused on Taichi's passion for making a better world/helping others, Kohei ended up taking a backseat. Some later episodes had barely any scenes of Taichi and Kohei together, let alone from Kohei's point of view.
The ending also didn't quite sit right. While it did its job and was sweet, it felt rushed and lacking.
I think this drama wanted to be bigger than it was and lost itself a bit.
I wasn't disappointed, per se; I just think they could have done more. Can be found on iQiyi or GagagOOLala

94. Kabe-Koji-Nekoyashiki-kun Deseja Ser Reconhecido
Japanese Drama - 2022, 8 episodes

Main romance between two MLs.
Mamoru talks several times about his realization that he likes guys. No "It's just you!" here! :)
My thoughts on the drama itself: It's kooky in a good way. I agree with other MDlers in that this reminded me of A Man Who Defies the World of BL. It's got a similar style.
I had some laughs, and it's fun and all . . . But the build to a romance wasn't done very well, in my opinion.
I would say you will enjoy this more if going into it you view it as a slice-of-life-ish-comedy rather than a romance.
Side Thoughts: I thought it was neat and unique of this drama to reverse the trope of BL writers being women who just have some obsession with writing about Gay guys in a stereotypical/unrealistic fashion and make it be an actual Gay man doing it.Can be found on Rakuten Viki

98. Minato Shouji Coin Laundry Season 2
Japanese Drama - 2023, 12 episodes
#98
Main continuing romance between two MLs. Coming out or confusion about sexuality also isn't an issue here.
My thoughts on the drama itself: At the beginning of watching this, I found myself in the minority of people who weren't too upset about the premise, even though it was like a step backward. Minato has always been a jumpy and nervous overthinker, like a rabbit. Would it be nice if he'd made more progress? Of course. But I got it.
But as things progressed, I grew more annoyed at the drama and Minato putting off clearly expressing his feelings. At the end of the day, it was just unfair to Shin. Minato is generally a person who is not good at saying how he feels outright or initiating physical contact himself, which isn't bad in itself at all. But he should have sat down and had a VERY clear conversation with Shin about it; let Shin know he's not holding back to be mean or because of his age.
Also, near the last half of the drama, it felt like the writers just straight up ran out of ideas and just threw a dart at a bunch of tropes written on the wall and went with it. To be fair, it did make me laugh at how out-of-left-field things went.
Do I recommend it? Ehhhhhhh . . . Maybe. Can be found on GagaOOLala

Main romance between two MLs and, additionally, in my opinion, a likely Pansexual SML, Akihiko. He just gave me "I'm open to anyone" kind of vibes. Just did. Lol. Also, he said, "I dated men before." So, we do know for sure he has/has had an interest in men and women. My gut doesn't say Bi, though.
My thoughts on the drama itself: The first episode was great and set the tone for this drama. It really makes you think of an anime (makes sense as it is an adaptation of one). Especially with things such as the opening description of the main character, the shots/lighting that were used, etc.
The two leads are intriguing in different ways. The main lead has a too-cool-for-school personality, but he is also a pushover and he feels a lot more than he lets on. The second main lead has NO sense of personal space. Lol. And he is also carrying a heavy burden that constantly leaves him feeling sad as well as apathetic.
I haven't seen the anime, so I can't compare this live-action version to it.
While I enjoyed this, I think it would have been more suited for this to be in a movie format rather than a short drama. I think it would flow a lot better that way as far as pacing.
Not as great as it could have been, but I was very glad to have seen it.Can be found on Crunchyroll or free websites
