A little dragging

Dashing Youth sure was expected and had to face the fact, that many had already seen The Blood of Youth and therefore knew the end.

The "+":
I liked all the actors, not one was anoying. Most of the characters were fun to follow. Some.were just "décoration" ans didn't add anything to the plot, but not annoying.
We had some heartbreaking scenes (I won't spoil but those cries of his still resonate in my ears)

The "-":
All those "drinking" scenes got quickly on my nerve.
The romantic scenes were so slow and dragging, without ever getting real. I always fastforwarded, as we had to observe the lovers eyeing each other for 1 minute straight, every single time.
Why did thew need a pure white carriage? This "pureness" of the main couple was just too much for me.
The CGI in the battles were too much, as well. The fighting-scenes were just about that, one blow, use of the final move - CGI all over - and that was it.
Why ? I was looking forward to some great fighting-scenes, I got none.

All over I missed the flow of TBOY and the interaction of their group: In DY it was more each character on his own, they just met from time to time, they didn't really get to create this particular group-dynamic I hoped for.

I don't regret watching it but I won't rewatch it.

Dashing Youth Indeed

just finished this a few minutes ago. as per Youku's production prior to this, it was quite a challenge for me to find a site to watch this comfortably (not in Netflix/wetv app or iqiyi which are usually the 3 sites I frequented for CDramas. Finally settled for watching in Dramacool site, despite the annoyance of having to filter all the popups *sigh

now, on with the drama's review. The plot is nice enough, intriguing and appropriately interesting. The idea of a carefree handsome youth (which is somehow an influenced wealthy heir to an important family) finding his footing in the big jianghu world really grab me in, and Neo Hao did a good job playing the role of BLDJ. I used to have a crush on him in his A Girl Like Me and yes, he was as enchanting and handsome as ever. His portrayal of BLDJ is also appropriate and endearingly captivating. in fact, all of the characters did a good job and that made the stories flow perfectly well in my opinion. Though it looks like BLDJ seems like the ML here, and it was clear during the first half (or maybe the until the third quarter) of the show, I can't help but feel that they put so much emphasis on YDZ towards the end, and BLDJ just kinda fades in importance towards the end. Love the idea of the so called brotherhood that BLDJ and YY/YDZ shared as the main point of this story, but I cant help but think, the brotherhood was only based on the same scene when they were about 9/10-ish year old and there's not enough brotherhood thingy going on between adult BLDJ and YDZ shared to convince me of such high paid effort that BLDJ seems to extend towards YDZ and vice versa ( albeit lesser for the YDZ's part towards BLDJ). I feel like BLDJ shared more moments of ups and downs with SKCF as brothers compared to YDZ.

Acting was quite top notch if I may say so, and this extends to almost all characters in the drama, so it was quite heartening. I definitely was amazed that the younger actor who carried the role of NGCS can keep up with the vibes set up by the older and more experienced actor for the older Mr Li , causing the flow of Li Changsheng character to flow smoothly even though there is a transition from one actor to another, as if the NGCS character was acted out by one actor only, just donning a face mask. lol. This gives me quite a contrast to Li Hanyi's character, I love little Hanyi, but the adult version was just annoying, I dunno what the Writer was planning for that character. How can someone being raised alongside NGCS and was then later sent to someone like BLDJ can possibly grow up to be that kind of irritating, hollier-than-thou swordsman I wonder. In fact, in my mind, the ranking for the most annoying female character for this series are YueQing > Yi Wenjun > older Li Hanyi. (and wenjun only slightly above in the list due to the fact that she appears more than the adult Li Hanyi. lol). YueQing was such a useless character with no redeemable value at all in my eyes. very close minded, all she did was whine and throw tantrum while making her sister's underlings did all the works. And don't let me start with Yi Wenjun. I can symphatized with her life as someone who basically had no choice at all from the beginning and had to be a sacrificial pawn in the political board of Beili, and I can even understand why she needs to leave her first born in the palace when she first left, I can even understand how she felt the need to go back for her supposedly dying first born later, but the way she did it, and her decisions ultimately caused all the downfalls of important and strong characters. The romance between her and YDZ was also not so well developed and I just cant get into the ultimate love story to pity their failed love. Totally agrees with Ji Ruofeng's comment "beauty that is causing the downfall of a country" (or something to that effect) and I'm glad that BLDJ blames her for his brother's death, even though he thinks YDZ don't. With adult Li Hanyi acting all mighty and self-righteous with no power/life experience to back-up her annoying self, this concludes my list of 3 most annoying females in Dashing Youth. lol

Back to ML and FL, I think this is my first drama of FL and I quite like her. Yue Yao was also someone who is righteous, but is not clouded with power and was able to see the bigger picture. She was a steadfast supporter of BLDJ and I think, for BLDJ to become such an accomplished swordsman, YueYao was at least half a reason for it. in fact, I think, if BLDJ were to lose YY and his entire Marquis of Zhenqi's mansion like YDZ does, I am sure the turnout would not be quite so different with YDZ tbh. BLDJ was just lucky he was able to happily end up with someone like YY and get to keep his families and as such, was backed up by such a powerful family. The romance between ML and Fl was plentiful in the first half and I was sad that viewers were robbed of the chance to see them back in Qiandong City and get married (I mean, BLDJ has been taking YY left right and center with him all this while, and he still hasn't married the girl yet? the heck were you doing Dongjun?? I'm pissed). and though it was mention times and times again that BLDJ inspires to be a Liquor Deity, while his brother wants to be a Sword Deity, it seems that that inspiration fades into the background by the end of the stories, nothing whatsoever about Dongjun finally being renowned for that feat, after the episodes where he won with his Seven Starry Nights. In fact, much of the plot tails end up like this, with no satisfying closure. Mr Li disappears with no trace, what with the Marquis's mansion fate, seeing that Dongjun is the sole son/grandson of the hereditary title of Marquis of Zhenqi, what's the point of Li Hanyi being the second city lord of XueYue, what's the point of Ye Xiaofan's character coming back (is it only to say hi to YDZ and lets him off? lol), what happened to the 8 gentleman's (BLDJ's shishiongs-poor Gu fella only appears in the first few episodes lol), I was even irked why the need to go to such lengths to introduce certain characters like Zhao Yuzhen then didn't do anything with him. lol. There's lots of other knickknacks left untied but I guess there's that. I was also left unsatisfied with how the emperor seems to be let off with no repercussions whatsoever and nothing in the palace of Beili seems to change for the good while YDZ had to atone for his strains of bad luck. I was in a hate love relationship with Xiao Ruofeng's character. while he seems to be quite upright and just, he also enabled such an undeserving man to own the highest power, when he himself can fit much better in the shoes. So it's fine for him to be selfish by allowing himself not to be tied to the throne but it was wrong for others not to let them be sacrificed for the greater good? yes, I'm talking about YWJ's case here.

OSTs were quite nice. And not to mention, hats off to the costumes team. they did a splendid job! I was always looking forward to see the next costumes the characters donned every time, and I'm glad that the dashing costumes were not only limited to the main leads only and all the characters' costumes appear to be so well thought of and beautiful, be it for the men or the women. BLDJ and YDZ's costumes were amongst the most beautiful I've ever seen in wuxia series. YueYao's also all flowy and enchanting *love love love. And truly, as per the series name, all the characters are dashing in their own right, it was literally a feast for the eyes. lol.

All in all, I probably will be looking around for this so called sequel of Dashing Youth -the blood of youth. Hopefully it can kept me watching till the end lol

Zhao GE can't out but this drama can release come on chinese gov

This drama fighting is completely ridiculous. it look like shooting instead of fighting. they should create gun fighting in ancient chinese instead of using sword.

story is completely stupid.
characters broken and act like no one else beside them. try to be on spotlight.

why this drama which promote theft, absurd, alcohol , misbehavior, can be release while drama like zhao ge can't be release.

look like chinese are unfair to good drama and promote only bad drama.

Fate general which can't release also.

at least those drama which can't release far better than this drama and even putting youth.

base on chinese's eyes is youth mean drug, stupid, spoil, clueless and theft?

truely stupid and extremely disappointed.

'I’ll drag the whole world down for the sake of you'

After marking Dashing Youth as completed on Friday, I’ve been putting this review on-hold because I can’t seem to find the precise outline for the review. After guessing the whole night in my sleep, I was reminded of Ye Dingzhi and Yi Wenjun’s tragic love story, so I decided to pick this title among a bunch of other titles. Moreover, I’m also reminded of One Direction’s song 'Drag Me Down', which has equivalent meaning with the story (if you notice the dialogues). Alright, let’s get back to the review.

Dashing Youth aka 少年白马醉春风is the prequel of the much-beloved wuxia series The Blood of Youth. Back in 2023, it became the year’s dark horse and garnered high viewership and buzz due to being one being one of the most extraordinary wuxia dramas that incorporated CGI to fighting scenes, which is no different to a xianxia or xuanhuan drama. Following its predecessor, Dashing Youth also attains the same reputation with the aid of bombastic promotion from Youku, despite having a more mediocre plot (if you compare it with The Blood of Youth).

The story is about a spoiled and arrogant young master of the Baili Family, Baili Dongjun and his sworn brother who is supposed to be executed long ago, Ye Yun aka Ye Dingzhi, and a street-smart wanderer who wields spear, Sikong Changfeng. Joining the trio are the astute former princess of Beique, Yue Yao and the daughter of the Shadow Sect and also Ye Dingzhi’s love interest, Yi Wenjun (though she’s confined in her residence all the time, still I don’t get why they put her on the main poster lol). Together, they traverse through the jianghu and discover their growth and unique talents and make their names to the world.

If I must say, the plot is nothing new in terms of a wuxia drama. You’ll get those friendship, brotherhood, loyalty, adventure thingy so it can be predictable some time. The plot is well-craved, and the dialogues are meticulously written and the witty banters between the leads are just hilarious, until the story goes downhill on the second half of the show, where Dingzhi and Wenjun’s love story becomes the main priority of the story. The palace politic is dull and very obvious if you compare it with Joy of Life Season 2, furthermore the apathetic grand eunuch sometimes drives me mad, to be honest. The emperor’s actions are similar to that of Xiao Ruojin, I can’t say he’s a good ruler but at least you’re better than a bloodthirsty and cruel monarch. One of the best aspects of this show would be the grand entrances of the characters, which kick off with their signature moves/techniques (they sure spend a lot of money for these scenes). In addition to that, most of the casts are eye-candy actors, which is the reason why many people watch this show.

Of all the characters, the one I like the most is Master Li Changsheng aka Nangong Chunsui. He’s the most savage master I’ve ever seen and an unruly one, not even the emperor can restrain him. The second goes to Xiao Ruofeng, the Prince Langya and also Master Li’s seventh disciple. In the comment section, many people claim that his actions are questionable, but I think he is put between a rock and a hard place, so I understand that he’s forced to choose the best option for the greater good and can’t pick ‘sides’ or show favoritism to others. However, it’s a pity that he refuses to become the emperor and is willing to give that position to his brother. If he were one, I’m sure Beili wouldn’t be in such a chaos in the future (for reference, check out The Blood of Youth and you’ll know why). Other characters that I like are Sikong Changfeng and his fiancée Feng Qiuyu, the Eight Young Master of Beili, and the Baili Family (I can’t explain all of their lore one by one lol).

Now, let’s delve into the romance. Though it serves as the side dish, the romance feels underbaked over time and I can’t feel the chemistry between Dongjun and Yue Yao, not even Dingzhi and Wenjun’s. If I am to choose, I’ll pick Changfeng and Qiuyu’s love story – they seem to have little spark of chemistry, though not an explosive one. Except for a kiss, we only got several hugging and staring into space and boring dialogues, though I must say Dongjun is such a persistent boy while waiting for his girl to come back.

As for the second couple’s issue, I’ll put the blame on Wenjun for being such a selfish, useless, and gullible woman. For the sake of your other child in the palace, you’re willing to abandon Wu Xin and Dingzhi. Why, just why? And how can you trust a stranger’s (Feizhan) word and be manipulated so easily? Just because you have a bad dream doesn’t mean it’s happening in the real world. Because of you, poor Dingzhi turns into a demon and vows to drag the world down for you. Because of you, the world becomes a bloody and chaotic hell. Boy (I mean Dingzhi), I get you’re a very loyal person and only wants to spend time with your beloved ones, but this is not the best option for you. Moreover, she chooses to stay at the palace on her own will and one more thing, she doesn’t deserve your love either!

I have no problem with the acting, though. Neo Hou pulls off Dongjun’s character seamlessly, but he’s not such a complicated character, so I’ll let this pass (really like him at Back from the Brink tho). Don’t get me wrong, I really like Hu Lianxin as Rongrong in Fox Spirit Matchmaker, but I can’t connect to her character whether it is Yue Yao or Yin Luoxia – there’s problem with the script, I guess. He Yu is the MVP of the show by executing the most complex character of the show – his micro expressions are on point too. As for Jiang Zhenyu, she’s still a newbie and has room for improvement, but I don’t blame her either – it’s the script that gets screwed. The former idol Xia Zhiguang surprisingly does well too, given that he has no acting background (based on my understanding). Kudos to the rest of the casts too for their efforts to bring the characters alive.

One more con that I've yet to mention is the ENDING! In my opinion, it should be a bittersweet ending given how the situations go through. However, the ending isn't fleshed out properly like the one we always fantasize. We never get to see how Dongjun accidentally kills Yue Yao, how Lei Mengsha and Li Xinyue died, how Xiao Ruofeng is executed, how Wu Xin is sent to Muyun Abode, and blah blah blah. Overall, a very unsatisfying ending indeed!

CGI, sets, backgrounds, and costumes are visually appealing and miraculously gorgeous. The budget sure goes a lot to these departments.

The rock and bombastic OSTs are wonderful, and I like four out of seven songs. BGMs are nice to hear too.

Will I rewatch in the future? Absolutely! But I’ll only watch the beginning of the show and avoid the second half at all costs. Because of the inconsistent plot and the lackluster romance, I’ll have to dock one point off from the rating. I may not be a heavy sucker for romance, but still, I love sizzling chemistry and stuffs like that. It’s such a pity that they fail to execute the romance department, which also happens at The Blood of Youth. This is going to be my longest essay to date and I’ll end it here. Good luck and happy watching!!!

topped the list

I loved the drama! to be honest I liked it more than I liked blood of youth. this drama had a strikingly fine balance of everything and the fight scenes..the special effects..the colours.!!! also what an ensemble....the cast was great too! a good plot with entertaining characters. Despite knowing the bittersweet ending that awaited me , I blew through the 40 episodes. They indeed had a 'dashing youth' and as viewer you would wish same as their master for these disciples to lead carefree, happy lives in martial world. unfortunately, much like previous generation they too can't break away from clutches of noble cities and wicked royal family (roufeng is the exception and not the norm ). baili donjun was a great protagonist, and ye dingzi was a sweet soul who deserved better. two platonic soulmates.

captivates with its ensemble of strikingly handsome young men, each bringing both charm and depth to their roles.

The dialogue is sharp and engaging, with a natural flow that enhances the realism of the interactions. The attention to detail in set design and costume further immerses into the world of the show, adding layers of visual interest that complement the narrative.

captivating drama that offers a blend of emotional depth, realistic portrayals, and compelling storytelling.

Better Than Expected.

Dashing Youth is a prequel of The Blood of Youth, which I personally became interested before. Some might say that it's better if you watch this first before TBOY, I agree, it's literally the start of everything. But also, I understand those whose glad that they watched TBOY first before this one, it's like a throwback in everything that happened in TBOY and an answer in why things that happened in TBOY, happened. But in my case, luckily, I haven't finished watching TBOY when I discovered Dashing Youth, because for me, it's better to start from where all things have happened.Sadly, I already knew that Ye Dingzhi died because it was already told in TBOY, that's entering this series was a bit of a road for me knowing that I will truly root for his character.

With the casting being one of the most beautiful line of actors is a plus points for me. I love how the Eight Young Masters of Beili have their own distinct classifications and power that make them unique from each other. I love Xiao Ruofeng so much, his vibe at first was a bit off for me, but once this man smiled, I knew he is a good man, like what the people around him always tell him, he's too kind and nice. Neo Hou is very good at playing as Baili Dongjun, from the first time I watched him, he definitely improved in his acting. But I want to give my full applause to He Yu, he gave Ye Dingzhi justice. I root for his character, even though I question his decisions sometimes. I just hope that Xia Zhiguang's Sikong Changfeng was given more screen time, but overall, he's character was engaging and his chemistry with Baili Dongjun is amazing.  The overall set up of this serie are good, CGI is always on-point. But I kinda hate some aspects about the obvious green/blue screen. Like I know they can make it better when it comes to the editing. Also, its a bit disappointing because I feel like all the fight scenes of this show mostly relies on CGI, like we don't get to see more of the moves of our characters. But overall, it worked so good one on that part.

But here's one thing that was a huge let down of this series; the love line, the romance. To be honest, I am really not a huge fan of romance inclined series, especially when it comes to hanfu/wuxia dramas like this that focuses on roaming around martial arts world. Some series made it work, like there is a hint of romance, yet it doesn't overpower the real purpose of the show. But this one is not the case. The romance made it all worst, especially in Ye Dingzhi's case. Come to think of it, you're one of the strongest the martial arts world can have, but your life will be a wasted because of a lady who doesn't even know how to fight for herself. Imagine, everything was because of you? It honestly pisses the hell out of me. I moved or skipped a lot of times because of how some ladies in this show doesn't make any sense, at all. Only Lei Mengsha's wife and Baili Dongjun's lover have, somehow, a purpose here as a lady of a man. The rest, just ruined it, for me.

The ending. The ending is perfect for me, esp when you haven't watched TBOY, it's a good opening for everything. Some may say that it's an open ending but for me, it's perfect. Even though I am sad about Ye Dingzhi's death, his death represents a lot of aspects.

Overall, this series is good. Not the best but definitely not the worst. Still lacks in a lot of aspects, and as someone who watched a lot of hanfu/wuxia drama, this is a mediocre one. A good watch, still.

THIS IS THE WORST SERIES EVER. (DESPITE MY 9/10 RATING)

Ok, this was a good drama, not the best but a good one. the acting is good, the vfx, actors, costumes, action everything is good and with a great production but the story will maim you for sure. They use 30 episodes to justify a character and then they just tell that all those reasons are invalid. I mean wtf. This is among the one series where I wanted the villain to defeat the hero.
Now in detail. This is the second part of the blood of youth but chronologically this happens before the first part. Some actors who portrayed their kids return as their fathers in this season(like Langya wang& Mingde Emperor). The story isn’t as complex as The Blood of Youth and most characters are the younger versions of the side characters from The Blood of Youth. The story is told in quite a straightforward way and it isn’t as enthralling as the blood of youth. But you feel so miserable because we know the future of these characters(eg: consort xuan(Yi Wenjun), Ye Dingzhi (Ye Anshi/wuxin’s father), Lord Langya(xiao se’s uncle)). So when you know these characters closely in season two, you kind of feel sad and want to change the future into something else. Season one was an intellectual treat and season two is an emotional treat. Everything about the story is great. not much of a large plot hole. everything kind of co-exist. And the humor in season exists in season two.
Now why I say this is the worst, when it was actually great. Because of the ending. The story kind of emphasizes karma but the wrongs that were committed by the second lead(Ye Yun) are actually justifiable when compared to the wrongs committed toward him. You will also be deeply disappointed in some characters:
i) Xiao Ruofeng ( Langya lord ); this guy was the holy beacon of righteousness and then he deeply disappoints you. But then his death in season one is kind of less agonizing when we hear the backstory
ii) Ye Dingzhi (wuxin’s dad); this guy is supposed to be the worst in season one but then in season two we learn that he is just a broken hero, a fallen angel, and a victim of injustice, and then his death becomes more agonizing and when he fails that hurts even more.
Now should you watch this, yes you should. please watch it This is a great drama. It is a question and a statement at the same time.
‘ are the villains truly villains and are the heroes always right because they stay alongside the so-called righteous path and orthodox way when they are completely filled with hypocrisy, rendering evil within their minds.’
