Family drama mixed with supernatural and reincarnations really good but needs patience

Where do I start ?? At the beginning I was going to drop it first two or three episodes ,, it wasn't my type of drama with all the blood and monsters but then they went to modern era and it began to interest me more and more
it dragged a bit in few episodes trying to build the connections between the characters ,, to be honest the casting of the female lead wasn't the best choice ,, I love her in other dramas but in this one she made me feel detached and not rooting for her at all
with her messy style and weird colored cloths ,, her clinging to the male lead ,,it was really odd and annoying to be honest
the writers filled the drama with family moments really good connections that I loved very much
I fell in love with Do Yoon the kid he gave so much feelings for his character and made me cry every time he got hurt like he was a lost puppy ,, he looked like a lost puppy most of the time to be honest LOL
the other characters were okey
the most interesting character of them all was the evil Eul Tae WOW !!!!! he got the best style ,, the best script ,,, the best acting skills and the best evil vibe ,, he did an amazing job the whole drama may be more than the male lead
The drama didn't disappoint in matter of keeping me intrigued to watch more ,, I was waiting every week for it's episodes but it underwhelmed me at the ending a little ,, I expected that ending half way through the drama and they copied a scene from Goblin drama at the ending ,, the ending it self ,, I hoped they would give them a chance in this life time but no
The ending was a forced happy ending ,, it was rushed and so many un answered questions were there
Over all I recommend the drama because it was really good and enjoyable watch ,, I may binge watch it again in the summer to see how I feel about it as a whole not waiting every week with anticipation

Lee Joon: The villain

Horror is the last genre I pick for entertainment, I get scared easily with all the blood and ghostly immortal creatures. It had a dark aesthetic world full of monsters and Bulgasal (Immortal Creatures) which haunts, reincarnations, and curses that runs from ancient to the present.

Bulgasal has an interesting plot, full of fantasy thrillers with the unpredictable story. The history is written pretty nicely with all the characters intertwined with each other but the present story writing is quite stretched and lacking. Every episode is interesting and has a twist but sometimes the questions that arise with the twist remain unanswered in the Plot loops and I watched the next episode expecting to find those answers.
Every scene of the drama is cinematic with the color palette and lights in perfect proportion. Every episode has flashbacks, monsters, and immortal confrontations with humans. Many of them feel having the same expression with all the makeup.

Bulgasal (Kwon Na Ra) is like a damsel in distress waiting to be rescued. She has unconventional beauty which resembles immortality. Her role matches that of a solemn, optimist, and resentful lady of the past. She does a very good job.

Well, Lee Joon villain saves the day for me. He literally is my show-stealer. His villain characterization with bold wardrobe is exemplary. I picked this drama solely for LEE JOON, for I had started admiring him for a few months after watching his extensive range of acting in My Father is Strange. He is an excellent ick for the antagonist character and for the first time I am more into villain than Leads.

music is fine with my favorite is "If You Cant Forget". I really like the intricate BGM.
I would rewatch the drama to watch of course Lee Joon.

If you are a fan of fantasy, mystery, and thriller dramas, BULGASAL is a must-watch.

wow!!! this plot is supernatural at its best, it is a fabulous build-up of twists and turns, and the entire cast is magnificent. lee jin wook and kwon na ra are perfect together, they have great real chemistry!! Bulgasal is a definite must-watch!!! Amazing job done by script writer, director and the cast!!

Une incroyable fresque poétique

Je vais prendre à contre-courant la rivière des pensées, des ressentis et des conclusions de bien d’autres. J’ai perçu ce drama, cette merveille, de manière très différente et c’est l’une des raisons pour laquelle j’écris cette critique aujourd’hui. Pour offrir un autre point de vue et peut-être, une autre explication.

Nos émotions et nos vécus conditionnent la manière dont nous percevons les choses. C’est probablement l’une des raisons pour lesquelles le public est si déchiré vis-à-vis de cette histoire qui, à mes yeux, est avant tout une histoire d’amour.
Car oui, Bulgasal est avant tout une histoire d’amour. Celle d’un couple dont les blessures ont influé 1000 ans de chagrins et de malédictions.

Je vais commencer par parler du personnage principal, Dan Hwal, dont la personnalité, les blessures et l’interprétation m’ont bouleversée. Pour moi, il est – et de loin – le personnage le plus difficile à interpréter de par sa complexité émotionnelle. De polarité Yin, Hwal est un être qui intériorise toutes ses émotions, tant pour les dissimuler au monde qu’à lui-même. Pour survivre, il n’a d’autre choix que de renier tout ce qu’il peut ressentir et ce jusqu’à présenter le visage de la mort elle-même. Car, et pendant six cents ans, Hwal est mort de l’intérieur. Cela se traduit par son regard éteint et cette maison décrite comme celle d’un fantôme. Hwal n’existe pas. Dans ses émotions, dans ses pensées, dans son habitation. Il est là sans l’être. Seule la vengeance l’anime car il n’a que ça. Jusqu’à sa rencontre avec Min-Sung, qui lui insuffle tout doucement la vie, ce qu’illustre parfaitement non seulement le regard de Lee Jin-Wook mais également la maison qui s’illumine petit à petit. La vie y revient car lui-même reprend vie. D’abord par la colère, puis par l’affection et enfin par l’amour. Le drama s’articule entièrement autour de ses émotions et de ses pensées. Et l’acteur … que je ne connaissais pas avant, le montre si bien par sa gestuelle et ce regard qui dit tant de choses ! On le voit tout doucement s’épanouir, par petites touches. Alors oui, le processus est lent mais après six cents ans, n’est-ce pas normal ? Et n’est-ce pas là toute la beauté de la chose ? De voir cet être, qui a tant souffert, revivre ? Ou devrais-je même dire ressusciter ?

J’ai pu lire que beaucoup regrettaient les scènes familiales, pour eux peu utiles et préjudiciables au rythme. Une nouvelle fois, je me permets de signaler mon désaccord. Elles sont pour moi essentielles car elles illustrent le chemin de Hwal qui, d’un être animée par la haine et la vengeance, s’est mué en un être prêt à aimer. Car Bulgasal n’est pas une histoire de vengeance, elle est l’histoire d’un être différent, d’un « monstre » méfiant envers les humains, qui apprend à pardonner, à aimer et à être lui-même humain. Sans ces scènes, la fin et l’histoire elle-même perd de son sens car elles sont essentielles au choix et au cheminement. Elles sont au cœur de l’histoire.

Ce cheminement, cet éveil à l’amour est symbolisé par son histoire avec l’héroïne, sa moitié d’âme et de cœur. Ces deux êtres sont nés ensemble. Ils sont les deux moitiés d’une même âme, raison pour laquelle on ne peut les tuer. Car, et oui, Eul-Tae le dit lui-même à Hwal, les Bulgasals ne sont pas immortels parce qu’ils n’ont pas d’âmes mais parce qu’ils sont jumeaux. Et c’est l’une des deux raisons pour lesquelles Min-Sung se réincarne dans deux jumelles au début de l’histoire. Pour illustrer la réalité derrière les Bulgasals. Ils partagent leurs âmes. Ils sont donc tout l’un pour l’autre. Néanmoins, Min-Sung a compris avant Hwal, qu’elle avait assez de place dans son cœur pour les humains et l’homme de sa vie, là où Hwal a fait d’elle son univers tout entier au point de renier jusqu’à l’existence, non seulement d’autrui, mais de lui-même. Min-Sung avait un cœur humain là où lui en refusait même la possibilité. De polarité Yang, elle était déjà tournée vers les autres il y a 1000 ans. Néanmoins, elle a fait ses propres erreurs et le drama retrace également son apprentissage vers l’équilibre. Elle n’avait pas à choisir. Aussi, et alors qu’elle l’a « abandonnée » 1000 ans plus tôt, elle n’a pas refait la même erreur dans le présent. On la voit en effet, et à nouveau, partir avec Si-Ho et Do-Yoon dans le présent – et donc délaisser Hwal – avant de faire demi-tour pour aller le retrouver. Cette scène, où elle l’empêche de se poignarder, où elle est là pour partager sa douleur, symbolise l’équilibre retrouvée. D’un impact ahurissant, elle illustre le chemin de l’héroïne vers son propre retour vers elle-même et vers lui. Car Hwal et Min-Sung ne font qu’un. Ils avaient donc tous deux à apprendre pour pouvoir se retrouver.

Il y aurait énormément de choses à dire et à analyser sur ce drama, mais je vais arrêter ma propre passion ici pour parler du troisième élément essentiel de l’histoire, Ok Eul-Tae.

Lee Joon est la raison première pour laquelle j’ai regardé Bulgasal car il est un acteur que je suis depuis longtemps. Son jeu est, une nouvelle fois, impeccable pour un personnage qui représente à la fois le côté monstrueux et coloré de la série. Je pense d’ailleurs, que ses côtés comiques et attendrissants ont été les raisons pour lesquelles il a tant plu au public. Pour ma part, j’ai trouvé le personnage un peu superficiel et classique. En effet, il est l’enfant malheureux et fragile, en manque d’amour, qui souhaite exister en devenant puissant et immortel. Son côté le plus intéressant était son admiration, son amour même, pour Hwal, qui représentait à la fois le père, le frère, et le mentor. Au final, on peut dire qu’Ok Eul-Tae a fait le chemin en sens inverse du héros car il a fait de Hwal – et du Bulgasal – son univers tout entier jusqu’à s’oublier lui-même, c’est-à-dire jusqu’à oublier son humanité. C’est cette facette que j’aurais aimé voir un peu plus développer car elle donnait un peu plus d’essence au personnage de Ok Eul-Tae qui, et autrement, voulait seulement se débarrasser, non pas de l’héroïne, mais de lui-même en détruisant son âme. Quoique, on pourrait dire qu’il voulait également la faire disparaître, car elle représentait l’obstacle entre lui et Hwal, et surtout, l’obstacle entre Hwal et sa déshumanité puisqu’elle est son Amour, et donc sa lumière.
J’ai adoré les personnages secondaires, adoré leurs rôles et leurs implications dans l’histoire. Coup de cœur pour le personnage du père, dont la force m’a impressionnée. Je l’ai trouvé très touchant, voir même bouleversant, dans sa relation avec Hwal et les autres. J’ai d’ailleurs été particulièrement touchée qu’il soit celui qui demande à Hwal de rester humain à tout prix avant d’être celui qui, en premier, lui donne son sang pour l’aider à survivre. J’espère, et je veux croire, que Hwal se soit d’ailleurs réincarné en son fis dans sa nouvelle vie.

Hye-Sok était très attachante et mystérieuse, Shi-Ho était adorable et Do Yoon …. Ah Do-Yoon … que j’ai aimé sa relation maladroite avec Hwal.
Les acteurs étaient tous incroyables. J’aurais tant à dire, tant à féliciter, tant à remercier. Je réitère mon incroyable coup de cœur pour Lee Jin Wook, à l’interprétation fabuleuse.

Je voudrais revenir sur la fin du drama, que beaucoup n’ont pas compris. Une nouvelle fois, les Bulgasals n’étaient pas immortels car ils n’avaient pas d’âme mais parce qu’ils la partageaient. Lorsque Hwal s’est sacrifié en se tuant avec Ok Eul-Tae, il a mis fin à un cercle vicieux auquel il a donné naissance 1000 ans plus tôt, lorsqu’il a donné une moitié de lui-même, son immortalité, à Eul-Tae. C’est d’ailleurs la raison, je pense, pour laquelle Hwal et Min-Sung étaient différents, même humains. Ils possédaient une force différente, comme si l’un et l’autre étaient toujours Bulgasal malgré leurs mortalités. C’est aussi la raison pour laquelle Eul-Tae tenait absolument à détruire son âme – et Min-Sung – pour devenir un vrai Bulgasal et ainsi être réellement puissant, car sa fragilité et son humanité passée étaient illustrés par son trou noir. Lorsque Hwal et Eul-Tae sont morts, les « Bulgasals » ont disparus. Si Hwal avait survécu, je pense que Min-Sung serait également restée en vie. Mais son côté Bulgasal étant également mort en même temps que celui des deux autres, elle est morte complètement humaine et ce pour la première fois. Hwal s’est réincarnée car il a récupéré son âme, celle donnée à Eul-Tae en échange de la sienne, et Min-Sung s’est réincarnée avec l’âme de Eul-Tae, celle que lui-même n’a pas réussi à détruire une huitième fois (raison pour laquelle il avait tant besoin de Hwal. Il avait d’ailleurs précisé que s’il refusait de la détruire, il la tuerait encore et encore indéfiniment jusqu’à ce qu’il se décide, preuve qu’elle pouvait se réincarner comme elle le désirait).

Autre théorie, Min-Sung s’est réincarnée avec la même âme que Hwal, celle des jumeaux Bulgasals de départ, tandis qu’Eul-Tae a récupéré la sienne et a recommencé quelque part sa propre vie d’humain.

J’aurais des dizaines de milliers de choses à dire mais je vais m’arrêter là pour ne pas en faire un pavé de dizaines de milliers de lignes. Merci, simplement, pour m’avoir fait rêver, pleurer et rêver – et un grand merci à Jin-Wook et Nara, pour avoir magnifiquement illustré cette histoire d’amour qui, au-delà d’une histoire de cœur, est une histoire d’âme.

A tale of love that span a thousand years

Loved it. I liked the switch from paranormal traditional drama to modern day paranormal drama.

The backstory was so engaging it made me hooked to the show. Their stories and histories are complicated and a bit convoluted. I think that's normal, if you're trying to tell a thousand years of history..

I was on the edge of my seat almost all the time. The show gave me the thrill, the adventure, the mystery, a few laughs, a heart tugging tears and an epic love story.

The last episode almost threw everything to the drain, the only saving grace was the consolation of a happy ending.

There are some plot holes, but are forgivable. Cast were great. OST too, they set tone of the scenes beautifully. And I would very much likely to rewatch the show.

Mindblowing Bulgasals

First of all I really enjoyed the series and how the plot is very unpredictable, I love the never ending plot twists from the beginning till the very end and honestly I did not stop watching this since you will get your attention on what's next, you will be curious in every episodes that's how I felt watching Bulgasal: Immortal Souls.

I also love the friendship and family of the leads how all of the characters are connected in the three timelines and I felt sad for the other characters but amazed on the other hand when in the next life they met again, literally in other life I would be your girl~~~ hahaha that's all

Quality Dark fiction which tickles our binge watching genes

Due to the plethora of shows with 'fiction' tag thrown at us, it is nearly impossible to actually find one that we would enjoy and re-watch later. This is one of them.

What hooked me to this series was the overall storyline and how events unfolded keeping the suspense till the last episode, with a perfect ending, giving the viewers full closure. The actors have done a fabulous job especially the villain in giving life to their respective characters'. OST was well balanced to the plot and moments.
Even with 16 episodes this one tickles our binge watching genes.

Overall a great drama to invest our 16 hours in.

honestly the drama started a bit strong but it went downhill maybe from episode 6 or so. as with so many other dramas, it was unnecessarily stretched. 10 episodes would've done it more justice but it is what it is.

Lazy writing

The insane amount of plot conveniences ruined the drama and killed even the slightest potential it might had which made the writing seems abysmal. Not only it was stupid with every step along the way but it also removed the tension with any serious scene. Moreover, we were over fed the same repeated information like babies. Even if we were to disregard all of that, the pacing was terrible with a big empty gap of nothingness in the middle parts. None of the side cast were interesting enough to make the middle parts worthwhile. Aside from the first episode, there wasn't much appeal left.

Tormentous but intense, romantic tale of posssessive love

The ending was good...better than I expected.
My only complaint is that the female lead was not upto par with the male lead when it comes to sensitivity. And the male lead wasn't that bad at all. After all, the humans made him that way 1000 yrs ago. The female lead should've understood that & forgiven the male lead 1000 yrs back itself. From what I see, she was one of the main source of all complications & messed up fate of the main male lead. The male lead had too much faith in her for his own good. Such a pity. But the ending made up for what was lacking in the their initial backstory & the plot as a whole --- somewhat.

The backstory of the main leads 1000 yrs ago ( minus the sidekicks) had huge potential. Such a pity all of that got erased by a poorly designed plot.
The story could've been made thousand times better and rosier--- not moodier!

Hope there will be a season 2 with a more epic but simpler, rosier story revolving around the male lead and the same, but wiser, more sensible female lead with no unnecessary side stories and convoluted complications. Only then, will I as a viewer be completely satisfied.

Great cast, mediocre writing

I thought this was pretty slow moving up until about episode 8, it took that long to build enough backstory to make it interesting. I know a lot of reviewers liked the beginning and the later episodes less. I also didn't like the way some of the plot twists were written to MF with the audience. Yes, I know it's a common K-Drama plot device. I did not like the Finale, it was rather depressing and the reunion felt rushed and incomplete. A darker but happier full circle ending might have been interesting.

I did enjoy the cast, the ladies were so pretty. LOL. I'm sure the female viewers enjoyed the pretty boys too. The detective and the 'Housekeeper' were great as well. I really liked Kwon Na Ra, although I admit she was not my favourite in Itaewon Class. I also noticed Gong Seung-Yeon's eyes, as mentioned by other reviewers.

The plot was Goblinesque, I will rewatch Goblin one day, but not this show. I would watch a season two if it ever happens, but I can't imagine where it would go from here, perhaps we would get the romance that never bloomed this time.
