Following the success and subsequent TV adaptation of his previous novel, Gene's publisher presses him to write another Y novel, a genre he was coerced into writing in the first place. For Gene, it's a struggle to find inspiration and grapple with the questionably moral tropes of the genre. It isn't until Gene is pushed into attending the casting of his book's TV adaptation that he finds an unlikely inspiration for his novel. (Source: MyDramaList)
The premise is quite engaging and interesting. The chemistry of the two main characters has also started to show since this episode. A cast of supporting characters with really chaotic energy and the cinematography is pleasing to the eye.
I feel like this early episode is pretty simple. The main character's explanation is quite clear. The most amazing thing is the casting scene. They successfully introduced Nubsib with a unique and already thrilling scene. Moreover, the visuals of the cast are also cool.
1st episode was cute. I liked the visuals definitely. But the story kept reminding me of why r u. Well too soon to tell but i almost fell asleep watching i hope things get better as story develops.
A great beginning with only a few things to keep in mind
TW: Sexual Harassment mentioned. As far as BLs go, I think Lovely Writer has one of the strongest first episodes. I personally watched the series trailer almost every day the week prior to the airing of this episode. Needless to say, I was super excited to watch this episode, and it did not disappoint. Characters: We are thrown right in to meet Gene and he became an extremely likable character to me. He's polite, sweet, and calls out what needs to be called out. He nitpicks the flaws in the BL system and also tries steps out of his comfort zone to help others. He doesn't seem like he wants to work on the drama, but a lot of people asked for his help. So far he is my favorite character and Up is doing a great job of making Gene fun and likable. I am a huge fan of Up's acting and he is not disappointing. As for Nubsib, he is starting off as a strong character as well. We mostly follow Gene in episode 1, so we don't get very deep with Nubsib. From Gene's perspective, Nubsib seems like a polite and fun character who also has a flirty side. He seems confident and like he knows what he wants. I have heard a few others say they think Nubsib is suspicious. While I completely agree with them, my suspicions aren't ill willed right now. I'm interested to learn his motives and what's going on in that gorgeous head of his, but I am not nervous about what is to come. As for Kao's acting, I think he has shown a lot of growth since UWMA. He is presenting a likable character and I can almost see the chemistry between him and Up. Lastly, as for side characters, they all seem like decent actors who are providing to the overall story. No one character has really stuck out to me yet, but they have done enough to make me excited to see where their stories go. Story: Like I said before, I have been waiting for what seems like years for this drama to air. I saw the trailer for the first time about 3 weeks ago and fell in love with the story. The idea of a writer and actor romance is fresh and interesting. The relationship between the Gene and Nubsib starts off in this episode and it seems perfect and not rushed. I think the trailer did a great job of overviewing the general aspects of the drama, without giving away too much detail. There isn't much for me to say about the story in episode 1, besides the fact that I think this episode did a great job of creating a foundation for the following episodes. If the next episodes are anything like episode 1, I will be highly satisfied. Things to Keep in Mind: A few others have talked about how many sound effects are added into this drama. Personally, I found them easy to ignore but I still acknowledge that they are overused. I think the overall story and dialog is enough for me to grasp onto in order to drown out the overuse of sound effects, so I personally do not mind them that much. Secondly, I want to bring up this point as sort of a suggestion. While myself and others are extremely excited for the BL industry callouts that are to come in this drama, I do not expect this drama to be 100% progressive. In this episode we already saw Gene bring up "sexual harassment". I am expecting more call outs about shipping actors, NC scenes, and many others in the episodes to come. However, I hope that you will keep in mind that while this BL seems extremely progressive on this topic, I want us to not get our hopes up. This drama is going to give us a lot but I expect there to still be scenes or other plot points in this BL that will be normal BL industry elements and that some of us may not find so progressive. I just mostly don't want myself or others to be more shocked than normal because of how progressive this BL is with other topics. Overall, I found this to be an extremely strong first episode and I am counting down the hours until I can watch episode 2.
An easy watch and a fun poke to the industry. Acting is natural, very light hearted and there’s chemistry between the leads (which I’m kinda confused since it is poking fun on the industry). Instant charm on this series with a good sense of charisma between Nubsib and Gene. Makes you feel you are losing yourself in the story within the story.
