Mediocre Through and Through

It's hard to fathom how a KDrama that features most of my favorite actors and actresses and my favorite script writer could suck this badly.

This started out slow but had an interesting concept, but quickly became a chore to watch. There was zero chemistry between any of the actors, the pacing was tediously slow and overwhelmed with product placements.

Even the ending was riddled with tedious mediocrity. The abundance of eye candy aside, there was nothing else redeeming about this show.

This one was highly anticipated one on my list but i am kind of disappointed. Plot has many holes and from time to time didn't make sense. Too many flash back scenes. Though they show FL as kickass but she cries buckets in the drama and at times it's beyond me to understand why so much crying? what is the reason to cry? for e.g. when she was running away to LL goon's and sees LG her crying i couldn't understand was that a relief to see him or she was super upset?? every scene FL appears she is crying on the screen. It really does not portray strong FL when you see her cry on every scene with LG and just becoz she can throw few punches does not make her strong. Strength mainly come from internal being which i found was not there. I was bored while watching this and only sat through this becoz of Lee Min Ho. It's a one time watch .

This drama isn’t absolutely perfect because nothing is ok
BUT ITS PRETTY DAMN CLOSE

I must admit, ever since I watched Goblin I haven’t been able to find a drama that competes

The beautiful combination of gorgeous cinematography, fantasy, romance, comedy and of course an incredible cast and music

I’d been craving a fantasy thriller romance and lo and behold I’ve been given one
Having still released only four episodes yet, this drama has managed to captivate me...there’s a reason it’s proclaimed it’s position as the highest rated weekend drama
I’ll try and break down all main aspects as well as I can with having only seen two episodes

Story:
The story is nothing new time travel, parallel universes...
But the fresh perspective given to this one with the same country in existence at different places in different ways, murder, immortality, magical instruments :D
The romance element which I can already see is going to be very well developed

Acting/Cast:
I won’t lie, I love Lee Minho the guy has that effect with that killer smile and no doubt great acting skills,
it’s a stuck up guy with issues and soft heart of course it’s played by him and he’s nailed the facial expressions, tone, gestures, everything
He plays an easily irked, haughty yet soft hearted king eager to run away from his royal duties and do maths forever if he could :D
after encountering a gateway to a parallel universe he meets his long time obsession a Lieutenant played by Kim Go Eun who so far has also done a great job at portraying her role.
A police officer, ‘a little crude yet serious about her job’ gal who is suddenly forced to deal with a wacko claiming to be royalty from a parallel universe and continuously confesses how he’s waited for her forever
I’ve been finding her quite entertaining with those sarcastic remarks and sassy comebacks, the way she keeps putting him in his place :D

She’s been getting some hate for not acting well or that she’s not pretty
She’s unique and that what makes her so refreshing, I honestly like her acting so far and can’t wait for her character’s development since we already know Minho’s supposed to stay the same till the end plus some love confessions and a few emotional breakdowns Added
It is what it is :/ (I hope we’ll see versatility in him this time since so far he’s done pretty much similar characters in terms of dramas)
She’s the one who’ll really get lots of character development considering what’s coming up for her!

The side characters have been intriguing, Prime Minister’s character really caught me I’ve never seen her in a a drama before, she has something to her can’t point it out but she’s pulling off her character super well
THE BROMANCE BETWEEN YEONG and Eun Sup has successfully trumped the bromance he has with him
that banter dear lord ❤️
The VILLAIN YALL is something else he’s shaping the drama and the dramatic dialogue, fight scenes everything is on point
The evilness can be felt radiating through the screen throughout the four episodes
Can’t complain about the cast it’s pretty phenomenal

Music:
I’m obsessed I’ve literally been playing then all non stop
We’ve got a star line up with Hwasa and Zion T Wendy from red velvet and Zico
The vocals and themes of each ost are stunning

Anyways guys GIVE IT A SHOT, ITS BEEN PRETTY EPIC SO FAR

It was a very confusing experience

Expectations were high, it was THE Lee Min Ho comeback, Kim Go Eun working again with Goblin's writer Kim Eun Sook, who created some of the best dramas in the last decade, and lastly, it was on netflix for the global audience delight. But expectations were not met. I'll go through the good stuff first: Wo Do Hwan portrayed two of the most endearable and funny characters I've seen in a long time, and with such fluidity, it was so easy to tell them apart and he had a great chemistry with... Himself (?); music, editing and production design, were fine, even with the difficulties about japanese symbols and all that. Also, the chemistry was good between the leads. NOW THE CONS: I have to reckon it was very confusing for me and I did kind of finished out of a feel of commitment, also hoping everything would be explained in the end, it was not. 1: I didn't understand how and when they fell in love, one second she was so prickly with him, and the next they were kissing, like, what? 2: sometimes it could be hard to tell the two worlds apart, because they looked basically the same 3: Conditions on portal usage and travelling between worlds were all over the place 4: Everything went down when they add timetravelling, like, still haven't figured out the rules of it and how it works with timelines and stuff 5: some subplots didn't go anywhere 6: most of the time it is VERY hard to know what's going on and characters reasoning, i guess they failed at creating suspense, leaving everybody confused instead. Beside that, there are some cheeeeesy lines, but thats a given with LMH characters so i didnt actually mind. Also, i guess a big turnoff for some is the abuse of product placement, there was a lot of it, and not very well done. Although if you ask me, the food delivery service ppl is a gem. Still, DO KOREANS ONLY EAT BBQ FRIED CHICKEN?. And, last objection: The ending is sooooooo unsatisfying.

#TKEM is a 2020 kdrama and one the most viewed in Netflix. I decided to watch it because of the big stars first team-up Lee Min Ho and Kim Go Eun (whom I adore so much) and they never fail to amazed me, because this drama is a masterpiece. l super love the plot and every episode was just mind blowing as in you need to work-out your brain to solve a puzzle hahaha ? cinematography and visual effects is so Daebak and it makes me fantasized everything.

The sweet/sad romance amid King Lee Gon and Lieutenant Tae Eul is refreshingly distinct, no draggy romantic cliches here, their relationship is straight to the point, no push and pull, considering they perceive they may not have eternity together but chose to acquire their fate for the moment.

The cast are all did a great job but who catches my attention was Woo Do Wan ? it was like a love at first sight feeling hahaha... I already watched his previous projects like #TheDivineFury and #MyCountryTheNewAge pero ala kami spark (char ?) second lead lng xa or kontrabida but here in TKEM his delivery in his characters as Yeong and Eun Sup is so plausible for me and he is one of the highlighted character here.

I also have to commend the writer Kim Eun Sook for doing this masterpiece. I've seen her oast projects The Heirs, DOTS, Goblin, Mr. Sunshine and lastly The King: Eternal Monarch all of them has amazing storyline FOR ME.

I'm just so happy that TKEM ended with a happy ending because I am so inlove with their characters. ??

PS: Before watching the final episode ako gi-rewatch ang episode one para mrecap lng hahaha...

Surely the legendary cast and creators should tell you to give this kdrama a watch? My first impression was definitely Goblin vibes, which is to be expected. I personally found some parts of the story really confusing and I really had to think or go online to get some clarification. However, that being said, I loved the cast. The leads have beautiful chemistry, even though I thought their loveline was a little rushed. My favourite characters are definitely Jo Young/Jo Eun Sub played by Woo Do Hwan. His duality in playing two completely different characters is amazing! He is such a talented actor and I can not wait to see him be a lead again for a kdrama. The ending was beautiful, I was tearful, as some relationships which were formed are now forgotten, which was to be expected with the storyline. The OST is so good, especially Hwasa’s and Kim Jong Wan’s tracks. Overall, the ending was satisfactory and had a fairytale aspect, good beats evil :’)

A masterpiece lost because of the haters

I don't know where to start lol
For me, it was a very wonderful drama, I enjoyed every moment while I watched it .. It was really a luxurious drama ..
I don't understand the reason for all the fuss about this drama as it was badly criticized! And the biggest reason for criticism was the large number of ads! Is this really a convincing reason! Is the story really badly complicated! For me, it is a distinct drama in that the story is written with a plot, and this is what distinguishes the writer, and also you must follow the episodes at every moment in order not to miss a new secret .. Really amazed me by the beauty of the story so that it was not just a fairy tale about love and revenge, but rather a well-written story ..
As for the ads, that did not bother me at all, because because of the large budget of the series, they had to compensate for that through advertisements, but the director tried to place ads in several ways, but they were very visible, but that's okay. This is not a convincing reason to hate the series ..
As for acting, the whole crew has excelled in acting. I really lived in the series hahaha
If you like special, luxurious and extraordinary series, follow this series. I promise you will not regret and Do not take the words of the critics into account .. Really, this series has been wronged by some of the haters ..
I fell in love with the series and the entire cast. It's a show for high-end minds only, not for the trivial ^^

I really don't understand why people don't like it. The story is really good, a little complicated at first but after you try a bit more you start liking it a lot, and it doesn't take that long to understand. All actors were perfect they did a very very good job, the couple was really good and they did a great job. The production was amazing one of the best I have ever seen and the songs were really good. Honestly try watching this drama, and one little thing that you must understand is that you have 2 worlds. 1 is the korea that we know and the other world is were you still have a king but in the modern year, using their old costume on specif times.

I could go a whole lifetime without seeing someone eating chicken and beer ever again

The sets, the action, the ideas and scenes looked beautiful and exciting… but those can’t carry a weakly written story.

Identity crisis:
So this show had somewhat of an identity crisis. The first episode was really epic and things were set up in an exciting way, the direction and action showed a lot of promise – I was sure I was in for a legendary ride, the budget was through the roof(not without consequences). Then some time later as the king arrived at Korea the tone suddenly shifted into ‘quirky romance s shenanigans’ for a bit, and tone shift was way too jarring as compared to what I had seen earlier. Then over time it meanders into like a police/detective (?) show, then some more fantasy, time travel, then slow dramatic romance all over again, history and even politics with naval combat? Like just pick one or two overarching themes and focus. You can’t just jam in romance, detective, history, fantasy, revenge, politics, monarchy, war and expect them all to gel and make sense nor expect to properly explore any of them when you have literally no time in just 16 episodes to deal with all those themes.

Product placement:
I’m sure this has been talked about a lot but I’ve never cared about product placement in any show I’ve seen before, but Jesus H Christ was it way too distracting in this show. Halfway into it or so there was up to 3 blatant adverts every single episode, to the point that the camera would obviously zoom into the product so you can read the name while the characters were CONSTANTLY eating and snacking and drinking the same shit all the damn time. They even made Lee Min Ho actually say a line about the coffee how it was ‘just as good as the coffee served at the palace woow it’s so good’ like damn that’s just too much. Not to mention how many times these people were eating chicken and beer it must have been almost ten times over 16 eps – at that point I had it at the back of my mind that if the ‘parallel universe stuff’ doesn’t kill them then their eating habits will anyway. When I’m watching a show what the characters eat kinda matters, it shows a lot about them, but if they’re forced to eat unhealthy snacks and massive bottles of coffe and plain chicken with beer constantly, I start feeling a bit sick despite myself and am taken out of the show every time. It’s understandable that a show like this would cost a ton, but at what point is it worth it when the product placement breaks your immersion so much that the beautiful sets and locations isn’t enough to get you immersed anymore.

Characters:
I liked the dynamic between Lee Gon and Tae Eul initially since I find it fun to see dislike to friends to lovers develop, but for some reason Tae Eul went from dislike towards Lee Gon to suddenly in love with him very abruptly, I was really really confused about what had she found out or what even happened?? Why does she suddenly like him so much? Even in the first place we weren’t given enough reasons why Lee Gon even liked Tae Eul all that much besides him thinking she saved him, she proceeded to treat him badly all the time but it didn’t deter Lee Gon at all, which was boring and a missed chance for more drama down the line, at some point in the first half of the show I started wondering why does Lee Gon still like her so much again? As for Tae Eul, she found out that Lee Gon had not lied to her and had been truthful about who he was the whole time and then she was in love with him… wait… why?? If she didn’t like him in the first place, it didn’t mean she would suddenly fall in love with him just because he wasn’t lying about being a king from a parallel universe unless him being truly rich and famous is all it took, yikes.

Tae Eul herself was a cool character if they managed to keep her that way the whole show, once she was for whatever reason in love with Lee Gon she would be constantly crying or super affectionate with him, and the writers had her stare vacantly into the distance with her mouth open or at Lee Gon way too many times - it just didn’t feel like the same no-nonsense, independent character anymore. Not to mention, sadly the chemistry just wasn’t there, likely because of how as explained their relationship wasn’t developed properly. Honestly, not joking when I felt more chemistry between Lee Gon and Jo Yeong in some of the initial episodes, would have been interesting to see that play out instead lol.. the way Lee Gon looked at him.

Jo Yeong/Eun Sup were definitely the best characters to see on screen, Woo Do Hwan managed to out charm and charisma everyone else few times over and the acting performance was great. Best part in this drag of a show.

I had an ok time, but any show that’s just 16 episodes long and makes me think ‘gosh is it over soon? I do want to move onto something else’ halfway through will get less than 5 stars from me.

This review will be a little long, but it is necessary. Please read carefully and calmly.

To give my opinion on this drama, I must put it in its great and fair perspective: WE ARE ADULTS AND THIS IS A FAIRY TALE FOR ADULTS. We all have an inner child, who from time to time, for our mental hygiene, manifests itself.
THE FAIRY TALE DEFINITION IS AS FOLLOWS:
In children's literature the genre of the story is especially valued. There are children's stories of all kinds: classic and traditional, fables, legends and mythical stories adapted or fairy tales.
KEY FEATURES:
The stories that are told are fantastic and appear imaginary beings who share adventures with human characters.
The natural and supernatural dimension intermingled. In this sense, there are characters who change their appearance, others who live eternally, natural elements with feelings and endless magical aspects.
In the tales there is a permanent tension between the forces of good and evil, but eventually the stories end with a happy ending.

IN UNIVERSAL CULTURE:
These tales are part of humanity's cultural heritage. With them the little ones feed their fantasy world, since in children magical thinking plays a relevant role. However, beyond children's stories, in fairy tales we find other elements that also interest adults: the craving for freedom, the pursuit of happiness and the need to daydream.

In every fairy tale there is a handsome prince, who rides in a white steed, in search of his princess. There is a villain, eviler than anyone, there is a fool and a bad witch.

The Prince: King Lee Gon
The White Steed: Maximus
The Prince's Squire: Jo Young
The Princess: Jung Tae Eul
The Villain: Lee Lim
The Witch: Koo Seu Ryung
The Fool: Kang Shin Jae
The Fairy: The Yoyo Kid
The Fairy's Magic Wand: The Flute and the Yo-Yo

And to really enjoy this dorama, we must let our inner child breathe, and manifest himself, and let us not drown him with our meanness and worries. This is a necessary exercise for our good mental hygiene. We must be excited in life.
Fairy tales do not seek to teach on a specific topic, nor are they literature to contribute to our intellect and spirit, because they only serve to ENTERTAIN. They only present the struggle between good and evil, and how good overcomes evil. And present the struggle for ideals. THIS IS A MODERN ADULT FAIRY TALE. THAT’S IT.
Fairy tales are often taken on the license to take some elements outside of culture, and that are not necessarily entirely historical.
If we take this into account, we cannot get so angry with the scriptwriter, because she just wanted to blow our imaginations, in a world as complicated as the one we are living in right now (Coronavirus, global tensions, problems of global economy, etc.)
What if the Netizens criticized whether to analyze or give the screenwriter the opportunity, which allowed the King to dress him in a royal hanbok of the Joseon Dynasty and wear on his head a crown of the Silla Kingdom (THING THAT HAS A REAL MEANING, WHICH LATER WE WILL SEE, STILL A HISTORICAL ERROR).
And what that if the Netizens returned to criticize that the seat of the Kingdom was in Busan and that Seoul is the political capital, and especially the tantrum that these same Netizens formed by the Japanese pagodas of the "opening", and also the tantrum that they formed because, if the Kingdom is united and the Republic separated from the North, (THINGS THAT MAKE SENSE, WHEN THEY ARE ANALYZED, EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE HISTORICAL ERRORS.) We must be like children and be more condescending with this drama, if we take "The King: Eternal Monarch "like an adult fairy tale that only served to make our imaginations run wild. Of course, I think that all Korean physicists and mathematicians who are serious professionals, should be RAGING seeing how most of how THEY DESTROYED SO SERIOUS THEORIES, FOR THE PURPOSE OF A HISTORY, WHICH NOT EVEN THE SAME LEE MIN HO DID NOT UNDERSTAND, BUT Despite all this, these are elements and licenses that a good writer needs to take to make a good fairy tale.
And as for the end, one incredibly happy, because as in every fairy tale, the prince stays with the princess and they are happy to stay. (OF COURSE; WITH A MODERN TWIST. THEY DID NOT MARRY AND WERE SNEAKING TO LOOK LIKE LOVERS ON WEEKENDS.)

GOOD THINGS:

BUDGET:
The cost of production: $25 MILLION DOLLARS. The special effects were excellent, the Korean tourist sites were exposed to attract tourism.

COSTUME:
The costume may have been more exuberant, according to that production budget. But nevertheless, they all dressed elegantly.

PERFORMANCE:
Excellent! A dream cast, who worked as pieces engaged with each other. Lee Min Ho as the King (the fairy tale prince of the story) fully completed his work. Handsome, tall, sportsman, excellent action actor (Remember his performance in City Hunter), the inexhaustible Lady Noh, the villain Lee Rim, the one we all hate, the beloved Jo Young, the Unbreakable Sword, the conflicted and suffered Shin Jae, the hateful Prime Minister Koo Seu Ryung. Jung Tae Eul, the princess of the story, a tough girl with a tender heart, I have nothing negative to say of them. I did not like that the President of the Republic of Korea never appeared, and that it should have been Lee Gon’s double.

THE OST
The soundtrack of this drama is superb.

THE FLUTE, REAL, HISTORICAL AND MYSTERIOUS
The Manpasikjeok,a legendary flute believed to calm the seas and drive away any concerns. The bamboo flute was called" Manpasikjeok”, which means a flute that calms ten thousand waves and became a national treasure. Apparently, ten thousand waves here refer to all kinds of hardships or storms of life. Some say this legend reflects the Silla dynasty's desire to bring people displaced from two other kingdoms that it had unified and establish peace and stability in the United Kingdom of Silla. And we see here how the screenwriter, like a good Korean, wants the unification of the peninsula, a national desire.

WHY THE CROWN OF THE KINGDOM OF SILLA?

The Netizens were superficial because they did not relate this crown to the Manpasikjeok flute, both of which come from the same historical place. We must think twice about things before saying them, you should not be superficial, everything in the dramas has a meaning, we must be critical in our way of thinking. It is an advice I give to the Netizens.

WHY BUSAN?
Because Busan is nestled in the former capital of Silla. (at the south of Korean Peninsula.)

WHY IS LEE GON THE THIRD KING OF THE KINGDOM OF KOREA?

Because this kingdom was established in the drama after Korean independence from Japan. That's how it should have been naturally if the nation had not been divided later as a result of the Korean War in 1950.

IDEALS PRESENTED THE DRAMA:
The author presents in a veiled way Judeo-Christian element (The tree of life in paradise, Adam and Eve, the Devil, the concept of limbo, the seeds that are born in a New Land.) But these same elements could also represent a Unified Korea, North And South Korea and the limbo could be the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone), the Japanese invasion, subliminally seen in the much criticized "opening" of the pagodas. Because this drama, like a good fairy tale, makes our imaginations fly.

THE YOYO BOY
The yo-yo's boy is the spirit of the flute, and according to everyone they had a double in the other world, twice as much of the flute was the yo-yo.
Yoyo's boy is really a girl!!

NOT SO GOOD THINGS AND MISTAKES

THIS PRODUCTION WAS UNTIMELY PRESENTED.

This production aired on the wrong time, because he had the bad luck to compete with the drama "The World of the Married".

SOUTH KOREA AND JAPAN WERE AT A LOW POINT IN THEIR DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS.

Remember that the invasion of Japan in 1910 is still very present in the collective psyche of Korea. And at the time of the dorama premiere, they were going through a diplomatic problem, so the naval battle of Korea and Japan in the dorama fell so badly, and the famous "opening" pagodas (even if they make sense).

THE RUN-OUT END

This drama must have been 20 to 24 episodes for everything to be resolved in a calm and coherent manner. I think that Goblin's open ending, which left a bad taste in many viewers, along with the bad reputation of the writer, for writing these controversial endings, was still present in the collective mind of all viewers. The ending was too muffled and forced, even though hardcore fans of Lee Min Ho found it perfect. But I am more objective. I look at everything objectively.

COSTUME AND HAIRSTYLE

As for the wardrobe, despite being a worthy and elegant one, it did not have the majesty that a king deserves, no matter how modern the time. The female lead could have been better dressed and her hairstyles could have been more feminine at times

LEE MIN HO'S MISGUIDED COMMENTS, SAYING HE DIDN'T UNDERSTAND THIS DRAMA.

These misguided comments from Lee Min Ho were only fuel for the Netizens, who always gave the impression of having a hate agenda against him and against the writer. Based on Lee Min Ho's misguided comments, then the drama should have been offered to an actor who mastered the themes of quantum physics and abstract mathematics, such as Kim Jeong Hoon, Prince Yul of The Princess Hours. He is also a handsome actor, extremely attractive and exceptionally good in the action genre. And based on this, he would have done a better job, of course, Lee Min Ho's work was very good, but it would have been much better if this actor had played him, because he would have endorsed the character, much more than Lee Min Ho.

LACK OF TRUE INFORMATION
But they failed to search for consistent information for scenes such as the sea battle (where they used Korean navy ships, and not the Japanese navy), and mistakes made with Maximus' saddle, which was an English saddle, and was too simple, unworthy of a king.

These are my final thoughts of the drama. If you want to see a modern fairy tale, I recommend the drama, just for fun, without paying much attention to the mistakes. And personally, I would slap the producers for destroying a drama that could have been the drama of the year, because a budget of 25 million dollars is no small matter. And I ask the screenwriter to stop giving us hasty endings.

You do not have to totally agree with me.

Watch it for the Royal Swag and Woo Do-Hwan....

Ok first of all this is one of those dramas that most people would love totally or hate completely and I'll tell you why.
The reason most of the people disliked this drama is because of the production team or writers mistakes. I'm pretty sure it was not intended so but they screwed up starting from the trailer itself. The final trailers for this series mentioned the writers name with the literal caption "writer of the Guardian: the lonely and great god". Add to it the fact that both of these dramas are of the fantasy romance genre and have Kim Go-Eun as the female lead, there was no way of stopping the comparisons between the two. Now to those of you who don't know about it, Guardian/Goblin is one of the most acclaimed K-dramas globally. It is near perfect with it's amazing cast, great storyline, explosive chemistry between the characters and addicting soundtrack. It also has a well balanced mix of action, suspense, sci-fi, romance and comedy. Being pitted against a drama like Goblin, the King was bound to lose the battle. The expectations were very high which this drama failed to achieve hence some of the bad reviews.
If watched without any prejudice, The King is a good drama. Although it's base story of parallel worlds is not a brand new concept, it's not a cliched genre either. There is also the element of Korea being one country with a modern day constitutional monarchy type system which has also previously been adopted in dramas (like King 2 Hearts, The last empress, etc.) but better since instead of simply putting a monarchy in the present day Korea like others, the writers here literally constructed a whole new "Kingdom of Corea". (Hence the extra amount of Royal Swag)
The back story of Lee Gon was quite good and it felt like a mini action thriller film inside the drama. The main characters were interesting (Lee Min-ho looks like he was destined to play royalty) but they unfortunately had no chemistry. Lee Gon's feelings were less like love and more like how fans adore their idols (because he connected Jung Tae-eul with the person who saved his life hence the idol worship). Jung Tae-eul's feelings seemed like fascination and grudging acceptance (because of Lee Gon's clingy and cheesy behavior). Kang Shin-jae's character was almost as irrelevant to the story as his therapist. Since only the ML's backstory was partly tragic (I know his father was murdered but he still had a happy upbringing) I believe that Shin-jae's character was there to add tragedy to the plot (he was poor and his mother tried to kill them both, then he got sent to another world, his new family soon went bankrupt, he became poor again, got bullied in school, etc. etc.)
Prime Minister Koo was one of the characters I had initially looked forward to since she was mentioned as the 1st female and youngest PM of Kingdom of Corea but she was not exactly the strong and stable head that I had expected. Her character was a mature version of the typical leader of the b*tch squad shown in most dramas, you know the pretty, popular, powerful, arrogant, mercenary and ruthless type. While the character was portrayed quite well by Jung Eun-chae, she didn't really seem that relevant to the story (since she neither did something overtly good nor really bad). Even though the writers tried making a love triangle situation with the main CP and her, it just wasn't convincing (same with Kang Shin-jae).
Lee Lim was definitely a good Villain. His plan was good but flawed and failed due to his own arrogance and stupidity. I didn't really understand why he tried to steal the flute and make people believe that parallel worlds exist. He should have either stolen the flute while the King was absent (that way there was less chance of failure since the security would be lax and he wouldn't be hunted for regicide) or usurped the throne if he had already staged a Coup (then he would be King and free to explore the powers of the flute like Lee Gon did).
But the best character across all of the parallel worlds in the drama was that of Jo Yeong/Jo Eun-sup. Woo Do-hwan was sensational in his portrayal of the two very different roles. He stole the show every time he was onscreen. The characters added to the drama what the main CP couldn't- chemistry, action and loads of comedy (You know an actor is great when he gets shipped with himself).
In conclusion, The King is a nice but forgettable drama. It was fun to watch and I will definitely re-watch all Woo Do-hwan cuts on youtube but I probably won't re-watch the whole drama again.
