Love The Way You Are (2019)

Cute Fluffy Movie

The movie is fluffy cute. On one hand I like that it’s short, but on the other I wish it is a drama to help flesh out the characters a bit more. Our FL and ML grew up as neighbors, went to the same school, and ended up in college in the same major together. She is an average student who’s brash, friendly, and stands up to bullies. The ML is the typical nerdy/geeky smart kid who tends to get bullied. The movie does a decent job tying up all the loose ends given the time. Viewers probably can guess early on that the ML has always liked the FL, but she never was clued in and he never confesses until the end. So, the title is “Love the Way You Are”. Does this refer to the FL? That the ML loves her the way she is? I wish it applies to him as well. That the ML doesn’t have to transform himself into an attractive person by society’s standards: cool clothes, no glasses, braces off, new haircut. I wish he stayed in his nerdy/geeky looks.

Obviously, comparing one film or television show to another can only go so far in terms of giving the viewer an accurate understanding/expectation of what they are about to watch, but I think it is a fair assessment to say that this little film is very reminiscent of such gems as Our Times and Crazy Little Thing Called Love (the movie, not the drama). They are not exactly the same, of course, as they each utilize different prominent tropes, and just because you like one, that does not mean you will like the other two. But for me, all three evoke similar feelings and explore similar themes, thus my comparison. There's ample parts nostalgia for the best parts of childhood (on behalf of the adult viewers like me, obviously), the pangs of a crush (requited/unrequited), the awkwardness of being young, the heartbreak and disappointment of wanting something and not getting it, how Intense everything feels when you're still growing up. For me, these three movies just get all of these things right, and that's pretty important for a youth film to work.

As far as Love the Way You Are is specifically concerned, I love most everything. I love the main characters, I love the storyline, I think the acting is pretty fantastic, I will never get tired of revisiting the themes of these sorts of films, and even the expectedly silly and nonsensical bits were immense amounts of fun. I did find the ending to be a bit over-drawn, which is not necessarily a surprise to me. I always enjoy getting to see the male leads point of view after seeing everything through the female lead's eyes for so long. Even though his feelings are pretty obvious, it was cute to watch them unfold. But it was such a long sequence of him going through every single meaningful moment of the film that I couldn't help but feel that maybe it didn't need to take quite that long. Cest-la-vie, I guess.

For me, this was a charming little movie that I would gladly watch again.

Well ever since I first watched the trailer... you know the movie is like the same ol' first love movie you ever encountered you whole life and this just add the list. But worth mentioning I came across this beautiful Song WeiLong that made my heart swoon over his smiles and good looks! I felt guilty melting over him when he's not even pass legal age...my oh my... but still he's got a long journey ahead I wish him all the best. You've gain a new noona's fan here. *fangirlin mood on*

Overall the movie is good with Vivian Sung acting, particularly hype up the mood by helping this awkward young man with his stiff expression like all the time. Still I would find my time to rewatch the movie to admiring SWL swoon-worthy suit appearence and sudden kiss! (*o*)

I'll assume the writers might have wanted to go for a deeper story/meaning about when do one actually start noticing that you love... or like someone...

Firstly the movie itself wasn't bad, but not at all great. I'm surprise at the overall high rate.
I felt there was something missing from this movie and the sound track didn't match it at all, though very catchy - There's much more I can say about this but it would give away the ending.
The story line was given away within the first 10 mins, and even though the movie was already only an hour and a half, there was time to take a run-through memory lane. The beginning and the ending did though add up together.
