FL has ZERO personality

I began to watch this drama mainly for Yang Zi and because this drama had really high reviews. I loved her in Ashes of Love and in the Psychologist but wow. This was such a disappointment. The summary hypes her up to be an amazing programmer who at the age of 19 is creating all sorts of complex AI programs. She also has a huge following for her musical talents. So coming into this, I was excited to see her portray a talented and interesting FL. WRONG. The first episode starts off with love at first sight, which would be fine if not for the cringe ways she tried to get the ML to notice her. I thought it would improve after the first couple episodes but halfway through the show, she still has no personality outside of the ML. She acts more like a lost puppy than a college student.

Seriously, the lengths she goes to to get the ML's attention and affections are such a huge turn off for me. It's like she has no life outside of the ML and she blindly chases him even though he treats her like shit for the first half of the drama. He doesn't communicate, can't express himself, is arrogant and a whole bunch more, but all she can say is, "He's perfect and has no flaws."

The age gap between them is also problematic, but the biggest headache for me is FL's lack of maturity and stalkerish ways that made me want to drop the series. Ended up watching it all the way through bc of Hu YiTian and the supporting cast. So disappointed they put Yang Zi in a role like this. At least with Ashes of Love, while she was naive, she wasn't brain dead and blindly in love with ML.

I have just finished watching this drama after 20 days of happiness I got from them. I have watched ever made me this addicted. What really made me first watch this drama was I did have love at first sight with Han ShangYan character in the PC Room. At first I thought this was going to be a typical drama with cutie girl and cold ass boy and girl that can never stand up for herself and needs the guy to protect her but it was totally different. It was beyond my expectation towards this drama.

STORY:
The plot follows your basic, this made the drama a lot more watchable because I wasn't constantly frustrated and think a lot with the characters and story. The story-line also progressed very smoothly and still in their pace without changing or adding character's point of view. I love how they chose the flashback and telling a story of Han ShangYan's past that made his emotions unstable. Nian Nian is a lovely girl who really damn smart and its really hard for her to not get in touch with someone she is really idolize the most. So we can feel the barrier of communication, feeling development and each moments of their relationship growing up beautiful together. I love how The actors were very convincing in their role and the chemistry was offcharts. The friendship bond between Nian Nian and her friends&family or Han ShangYan with K&K, family and Solo Team. Their friendship felt so real. It was simply gorgeous . Although we are ready knew the story ending but still this drama is full of surprises and still making us craving for curiosity about their romantic scenes and humors.

ACTING/CAST:
The characters have their own color and very much relatable. They have advantages and disadvantages that we dont have to mind since their advantages covered their disadvantages. There were many times when he was clueless about how to please her or what to do in a relationship, so he needed someone to tell him. I enjoyed the character development of each actors episode by episode.

MUSIC:
I love the BGM fresh and have a fighting mood since it is for a competition drama.

RE-WATCH VALUE:
I don't think I can re-watch the entire series from beginning to end, but I might re-watch some cute scenes

OVERALL: Overrated drama but Korean and Japanese drama cant beat Chinese simplicity drama with just a simple actor and acting .This drama was definitely a refresher for me in the abundance of dramas, that I can't seem to find interest so much, premiering nowadays. The storyline was simple yet beautiful and was one that guided the audience through the life of the main character's love story. honestly didn't have any problems with the storyline until the end and I enjoyed every episodes since the begining till end.

HANDS DOWN TO CHARMING HAN SHANGYAN.

There are better dramas about e-sports in China out there...

One of the better chinese dramas I've seen... But having never read the book, I don't know if it's the book that's the problem or the script/screenplay.

I love that it's set in the world of professional esports but, unlike most other reviewers, the bit I didn't like was the romance arc.... And I think it has something to do with the casting of Tong Nian and/or the screenplay/book/script as alluded to above especially when it comes to how they met and started dating.

There is already a 10 year age gap between our OTP but it really doesn't help that rather than looking 19, Yang Zi looks about 15 (and the way she dresses doesn't help) and then there's the fact that she essentially stalks our leading man into submission. I basically cringed throughout the majority of their romance because it became a little bit ickey (age gap, stalking and her made to look younger than she was). But, this may just be me being British as I've seen quite a few Asian dramas and stalking (especially when it's women fawning over men) seems to be a common theme that doesn't seemingly bother people. Not so when it's men stalking women as there will be police being called and the like.

Other issues with the drama included:
1. Too many flashbacks, especially of Team Solo when they were in their heyday. Could of kept it to Solo finding out about his daughter and break up with Appledog and then Han Shangyan leaving Team Solo. Series could of been reduced by 2/3 episodes because of this. Also we get the Han Shangyan held a grudge but I felt like that could and should have easily been resolved when he and Solo got drunk and hugged it out towards the end of the series.
2. The synopsis for this said is that Tong Nian is a brilliant 19 year old programmer... But there was no evidence of this. Personally, I think this could have been how they met and rather than the stalking, there were seemingly lots of computer-based reasons that they could have been associated. Including - by all accounts, she competed against Wu Bai at a tournament, where he came 1st and she came 2nd; Tong Nian could have been working on something at the internet cafe and he could have been interested in it; she was working on projects relating to cyber security using AI and facial recognition and I'm pretty sure she could have coded training programmes for the team... And finally, we found out later in the series that Han Shangyan had an association with her professor at the university. Again, why not use that to enable them to come together and highlight how good she at programming? A wasted opportunity.
3. Whilst the blossoming romance between Yaya and Mi Shaofei was sweet, Wu Bai should of been in it more. As the captain of an esports team, he should of been with the team more anyway but really should of had more than 2 instances whereby the series touched on his crush on Appledog.

It wasn't all bad as the production was good, albeit the story - mainly because of the use of flashbacks, was at some points difficult to follow. Could have been the product of poor editing but we'll never know.

My main problem with this show was the acting and/or characterisation but as mentioned above, I'm not sure who or what to blame for this.

Also, it's a chinese drama so it's longer than it needs to be and because to that, I wouldn't necessarily encourage a re-watch.

To be totally honest I am quite embarrassed to say that I liked Go Go Squid in its earlier episodes. I squeezed each time the two leads were on screen. And just like everyone else, I like Li Xian aka Han Shangyan's masculine persona. I was willing to forgive the non-sensical immaturity tone of the show but you know, there will always be a limit when you compromise.

I liked it from episode 1-16. I still continue to adore it episode 17-25 but I began to question myself if I should continue watching it. From episode 26 onwards, I really really feel like dropping the show. It's no fun anymore. I began to get annoyed with the constant flashback of Han Shangyan's backstory, the uninteresting side-characters stories wherein there's just so many of them. And Hu Yi Tian being one of the main leads wasn't given enough screentime (not that I am complaining since I am not his fan, but as a team captain of the group, I think he deserves some spotlight).

The drama was off to a good start but it progresses way too fast. The relationship of the main leads was given to us at a speed of light. They were already gf-bf in just about a few episodes and it felt like they haven't gone into the process, lol. Then Tong Nian's attitude became like a 'stalker' so obsess like a girl madly yet blindly in love with a handsome guy. And Han Shangyan who's still a virgin at the age of 30 is spoiling the girl too much that at times it feels like she is more of her daughter than a girlfriend.

I don't have anything to say in the acting department. Both leads delivered their roles perfectly well especially Yang Zi, she indeed suited for cutesy roles like these however, I find her character here a bit too immature at times.

Also, call me conservative but I don't like the idea of them getting married when the girl is just barely 20y/o. Oh well, it's their choice but still...

Overall, the drama was enjoyable for the first few episodes but dragged down towards the end. I believe it was purposely stretched to accommodate more episodes because as usual "business comes first". Unless you have so much free time, you may end up finishing the entire drama. It's not too bad, I can say mediocre at best. I was able to finish it though I abused the fast-forward and skip button of my laptop.

Go Go Squid doesn't have the best character development, writing, or romance, but I genuinely enjoyed it from start to finish. It made me laugh out loud and didn't have any stressful storylines. I was surprised by how much it focused on the male character Han Shang Yan's story, from the heartbreaking dissolution of Team Solo in the past to his dream of winning a championship in the present. I initially thought Go Go Squid was about esports but it's actually about a specific type of cybersecurity competition that was pretty interesting.

My favorite parts were Han Shang Yan's scenes with the K&K boys (97, Demo, and Grunt scenes have a lot of rewatch value, lol), Hu Yi Tian (omg that New Year's dinner scene), and his former Team Solo teammates (although there were way more flashbacks than I expected). I personally like Li Xian a lot and thought he played the character well. Han Shang Yan's not a cold person, he's just very serious and focused, and has grown used to being quite solitary.

As for Tong Nian... first of all, I'm not a huge Yang Zi fan so I was concerned before I started watching that I might not like this drama. However, she doesn't even get her own storyline aside from falling in love with Han Shang Yan. I'm actually kind of disappointed because there was a lot of potential with her online singing and her studies/projects, but it faded into the background. I don't like characters that are too naive and I hated the 'love at first sight' aspect, but I found her character tolerable just because there were so many other characters that I did like.

I loved Xiao Mi and Ya Ya (although her expressions were a tad over-exaggerated) and wished they had more scenes! Ai Qing aka Appledog was also a great character and I loved her short hair and fashionable outfits. All in all, a really fun watch.

EDIT: I've bumped up the music score because I really loved the opening song "A Nameless Person (无名之辈)" and Yang Zi's Milk Bread song is cute.

Acting great; Plot lacks depth

This is my first review ever, but I felt it had to be done, I had to vent. I agree with many of the other reviewers Tong Nian's character lacks depth and is as they've said bit of an airhead. I believe in love at first sight, I'm sure it exists for people so that wasn't too difficult to believe. What annoyed me though was her pursuit of the ML, at times I felt she lacked even minor self-respect following him like a lost puppy when he clearly wanted nothing to do with her. And despite him being written as a cold character, from the start I always felt he had a lot of depth, but that was based on background alone, he practically supports and encourages youngsters in pursuit of their dreams. He had to have done something right for them to stick with him, his reputation alone wouldn't justify sticking around if he was a jerk. So I felt it was more of an outward demeanor but inside he was actually kind and was fully capable of loving deeply, he clearly values relationships enough to stay hurt by them yet still desire to fix it in spite of his pride. I get one losing their individuality for their other half, it happens frequently in real life and that is something Tong Nian lost, but then again I felt she really didn't have much of a personality other than being kind and infatuated with love. When the ML tells her don't think about love so much, it was perhaps the funniest part because she kind of does. She's school smart but not street smart. Also you don't really see her do much of singing as expected or anything really, even in the relationship she was utterly helpless while the ML was capable of cleaning, cooking and sooo many things. Parts that annoyed me were her childlike moments, like drinking beer the second time for what? to get him in trouble and sleep over at his place, girl no. Or her clingy moments like when is he taking her to see his grandpa when the grandpa just left a day ago. The grandpa and parents I loved they were like real family members at least like mine I feel. However she never spoke up to tell the truth on certain occasions when it could have helped and if you love someone you stick up for them unless I'm wrong, and you can do it respectfully. The actors were wonderfully chosen but the MC script was awful, too naive and not enough character growth on her part. I am also still lost on how he ended up loving her, sure they were sweet at the end but when did he start loving her she was so clingy, it felt more like he took her in as a lady to care for and watch out for but falling in love with her seemed like a bit of a reach. The actors were great but really the script had gaps or something, either way I'm going to read the novel and see if that clarifies anything but from what I've read it's more or less the same.

When you read the synopsis or storyline, you won't think you will be addicted to the show, but once you started watching you just can't stop.

This show gave me some "Love O2O" vibes, although the male lead wasn't as handsome as Yang Yang, but TBH their story is very much better :) I love how they slowly build up their puppy love and with all the 神助攻 (loveline helpers) of the show (K&K kiddos, main leads' friends and family members) that makes the couple fall in love! Some scenes were just cute and funny, you will smile widely while staring at your screen without noticing because the couple is just too adorable!

So if you are looking for something light and funny, give this a try and you will not regret :)

If there is one series that I would say will make one fall in love like a teenager again and again, this is it! LI Xian and Yang Zi is the best pair ever, their individual characters combine beautifully to make such an unforgettable pairing, so natural with a lot of personality that flows out like magic. Hope to see them together again soon! Their acting, together with the excellent direction, editing. cinematography and OST made this truly one to remember for a long time. Definitely, this will be in my all time favorites list! Credits also to Xiao Mi's passionate acting and Yaya, another sweet pair!

This show isn't perfect. There are things I like and dislike about it. However, thanks to our couple, HSY and Tong Nian, I made it through the end. This is one of my drama crack this year, and I'm thankful for all the laugh and embarrassing moments they gave me giggling alone in front of my laptop.

Thanks Li Xian and Yang Zi for bringing out this pure and fluffy chemistry to screen. And to all the side characters, esp the K&K boys, you guys are the scene stealers and you know that.

Weak Story, Loose Ends and no Romance Chemistry.

Since I used to be a PC gamer (SWG WoW etc.), this show attracted me. In addition, I was hoping to see some romance like the profile of the show described. I was in for a big disappointment. But more about that later.

The sports gaming concept surprised me. Cybersecurity is a big topic today. I’m not sure how interesting that is to the viewers, but it wasn’t visible anyway. The show is about Han Shang Yan and the people around him. K&K and the CTF world is Han Shang Yan’s life; that much is clear. His only joy in life comes from this interaction. I had a hard time understanding all the camaraderie and past grievances. The story spent so much time trying to make it all significant, but I couldn’t buy into it. Let’s say they had some misunderstandings that lasted for ten years. Were they were life-altering misunderstandings? Maybe, but I couldn’t feel the emotion of the whole thing. Was it Han Shang Yan’s never-ending stoic face that killed the feeling? Crying in the bathtub was way beyond weird.

Like most C-Dramas, this one moved slowly at times. Some of the scenes looked staged with little attention to detail. A little more attention to that detail would have made it more realistic. Repeating scenes is also a habit you see in C-Dramas, especially looking back in time.

Back to the romance, the age difference between the FL and the ML didn’t bother me. They are only one year apart in real life, so it was hard to make that an issue. However, watching Han Shang Yan (Li Xian) acting like a boyfriend was like watching a blind man searching for something he dropped. You know he will find it eventually, but you are not sure if you should be watching him explore. It’s not the first time I’ve seen Li Xian play a stoic, rude, arrogant character who never smiles, but it does wear on you after a while. He has a great smile. I wish he would have used it more in the beginning. In this show, he calls her a child, a kid, and a little girl. I hope that was a translation issue because who goes around calling their girlfriend a child or a little kid. Their romance, if you can call it that, progresses gruelingly inch by inch. Why would any girl in her right mind want anything to do with this guy? At this point, no matter what they do to redeem this character, it may not be enough. That’s the problem with the 40+ episode dramas. They dig the hole so deep that the character who crawls out of the hole is never the same.

Eventually, they come together as a couple if you can call it that. I didn’t feel the chemistry at all. Are these two not allowed any passion in this relationship? I’m talking about the kind of passion that drives the love you feel for the other person. It shows on your face, and it shows in your body language; it spills from your heart. Unfortunately, none of that showed on screen. Now the kisses. If you can’t commit to the kisses, the romance will look awkward no matter what you do. Kissing is not only about lip contact; it’s a mindset of emotion. They might as well have been doing a fist bump; it would look less awkward.

It’s was evident that the only thing that matters is the CTF world. With Han Shang Yan at the center of this universe. The show spent very little time thinking about Tong Nian’s capabilities, aspirations, and dreams. When the show started, and Han bought Nian a stack of games, I thought she would become an integral part of this world. Since she was a computer genius, it would have been interesting for her to become a game wizard. The story, however, continued to keep her on the outside. She seemed to be a toy for Han to keep himself occupied. He pats her on the head a lot. Is she his pet? Why does she wear a stupid backpack everywhere she goes? Is it because she’s 19 years old, and that’s the way they show her age? When she turns 20, she gets to take the backpack off? If they wanted to make her look like a schoolgirl, they succeeded. Of course, doing that lessens the romance, the awkward proposal, and everything else attached to the couple.

The music was all over the place. At times it was beautiful, and other times it felt like elevator or funeral music.

Subtitles:
I think they overused the word pitiful. In English, it just isn’t used in the context they use in this story. There were a few other translations that felt a little off. Why did Han call his teammates children? Why not use the term guys, young men, or even boys? Calling Tong Nian a child or little kid all the time was either a bad translation or a lousy script, you pick. But overall, I thought the subtitles were decent. I would give them a 7.5.

A story on fighting for your dream

This gave me a very bad first impression that I almost dropped it. The second hand embarrassment I felt for Tong Nian as she kind of stalked Han Shangyan in the first few episodes was just too much. After Episode 4, it got better. I did not really like the main romance because I felt that Tong Nian was too submissive. It's good thing that he never really took advantage of her. Grandpa was their matchmaker, without him they would not get together or get back with each other. The second CP of Mi and Yaya made up for the sweetness I was looking for in this show.

More than the romance, the journey of team solo as they fight for country pride either as individuals or as a group was the main essence of this show.

I really enjoyed the concept behind this drama, e-sports, competitions, team bond and relative friendships that usually form while playing/working in this field. To spicy up the plot a bit, a huge part was dedicate to the romance, the main couple may look inexperienced when it came to dating, sometimes even naive but has a great chemistry. The rest of the show is dedicated to the friendship between team, the beauty of the drama lies in the fact that everything is explained one piece at a time, allowing you to become attached to the characters and understand the real reasons behind this long-standing friendship. Each character was well written and the cast was fit for their respective roles.
Obviously there were small elements that didn't suit my tastes. For example, I didn't appreciate the fact that the FL looked more like a child, both in behavior and in clothing than a young woman. As well as the ML was always brooding and almost mono-expressive. But overall the author was able to write a wonderful friendship/love story around the concept he choose, e-sport. The soundtrack became my addiction, specially the intro/ending music of each episode.
