Story-wise, I have to say it is quite unique in a way that JM could not love and did not know what love is due to Unfeeling Pill. This set the whole story different from others. The first part was really entertaining and funny and also created a base story for every angst and drama that happened later. Characters are really well-written - RY and XF's characters complement and contrast each other. JM's character development was also quite strong - from an naive innocent girl to a woman who would do everything for her love. I particularly like RY's character arc - how he became what he was - things that he did are not justifiable but understandable, I would say. I do think that the story took a bit too long in the first arc and also wasted a lot of time in the story of demon princess and MuCi.
Acting-wise, I liked all the three main leads. YZ is one of the actresses I look forward and she did a really great job portraying different emotions. She is such a versatile actress. JM's character would not have received so much love without YZ's acting skills. LYX also did a fabulous job in portraying such a complex character, RY, - from a quiet, gentle man to a man cold with hatred. I first noticed him in My Sunshine drama but didn't know he is that good. As for DL, I have never watched his dramas. He is also a good actor; his character was just outshined by YZ's and LYX's.
If you like xianxia genre, this is definitely the one to watch. Most would compare it with TMOPB; I don't want to because these two are two different dramas apart from the fact that they are in the same genre.

As compared to all the top dramas - Eternal Love, Untamed etc, Ashes of Love might not have the best storyline but they definitely got the BEST production!! Costumes, CGIs, Soundtracks, backdrop, it is just amazing how a Cdrama can produce such quality of fantasy drama!Next let's talk about storyline, I personally wouldn't recommend this to people who is looking for a comedy piece, because the entire series is just very saddening throughout, many twists and turns going on and on... I don't really like how the male lead fall madly in love to her so quickly when the female lead hardly done anything, it would have been better if they had more stories before the male lead is willing to sacrifice so much for her (which the second half of the show got better) That's why I think the show wasn't that appealing to me until the last 25 episodes where the climax of the story begins (If you have watched the series before you will definitely know which part I meant XD) I love those parts!
Besides that, I personally felt female lead's innocent acting in the front part wasn't that ideal, no doubt she was pretty good in crying scenes but not the very front part where she was a grape sprite, I know she was supposed to not have any love feelings, but her acting was a bit off TBH, not so natural. But she really pull off the heartbreaking scenes though, that part needs to give her a huge credit.
I wouldn't want to rewatch probably because the main leads are just too miserable haha, but it was a good piece overall, worth watching!

The actors did a really great job expressing their emotions. The ost of this drama are so touching and emotional. Everything about this drama is great except for the fact that it broke my heart too many times ?? I didn’t expect so many tragic events would happen. But somehow, those tragic events are what made this drama speacial. It showed what true love is and it carries deep meaning.
I didn’t sleep for so many nights just to watch this drama. I’ve watched hundreds of drama but this never happened before. This drama just kept me hooked up. I just finished it this morning but now I’m missing it a lot.
I waited for months for this drama to air because of my favorite actor, Deng Lun, is the male lead. But it’s worth the wait.
Give it a try y’all. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Ok drama
Chinese Drama
Spoiler Alert !!!!. I'm struggling watching this Drama. The first 7 Episodes give you the history and introduced you the character. Now at Episode 20 I would think the FL would have matured a bit. She went to earth realm for her trial and she was basically mirroring what she did in the first few episodes. Next she seems clueless as if she doesn't have mind to think because she has that implant in her heart....the second Male lead is always one step ahead which is boring because he is secretly manipulative and acts all nice. I will try to finishing it probably next year some time lol! ....I finished watching it . Overall I give it a fair ratings. I didn't like the ending very much . I think the Phoenix should have remained a powerful ruler even to the end. He carried that powerful image right through the drama. Yet at the end he seems to have lost that image which was his true identity. There was some gripping moments. Note : This Drama should not be compared to Eternal love. It lack that mature romance. I felt like they were teenagers even when they should have shown some form of maturity. Like Susu and Yuwa.

Was I supposed to root for the protagonists?
Started watching this because it appeared on Netflix, and the first episodes were an easy watch. I didn't have many expectations of the drama, since I hadn't watched the drama this one is being compared to, either. Suffice to say, I hated it.-JINMI: Although I do understand that Jinmi was meant to be innocent and unable to love, I think there's a thin line in these dramas between being innocent and being stupid or lacking in any kind of reaction. I don't know if it's the script or the actress, but there were moments where characters were discussing something important, and Jinmi had little to no reaction to what was being said. It would make sense if she didn't understand shit, but even in situations where she understood the context, there was no reaction. It felt mostly like monologues designed as dialogues, and it made me feel like the protagonist didn't have much protagonism, especially in the first 20 chapters. When she is goes to the Mortal Realm, we're not privy to her real difficulties, and, with that, we, the viewers, cannot see her development, both emotionally and in skills, which left me, personally, unsatisfied. In the last stretch, it's just fabricated drama of why she can't be with Xufeng, to the agonize over him in repetitive scenes that add nothing. In short, she was a boring female lead. There is nothing wrong with innocent protagonists who develop over time, but Jinmi was not it.
- XUFENG: I disliked this character quite a lot. Not only was he extremely privileged, he seemed uncapable of seeing it. Acting like a boy with a crush, he didn't seem to care nor understand that Jinmi was uncapable of loving or that she was unaware of gender differences due to the way she had been isolated. The drama tries to paint him as this heroic, romantic lead, but many of his choices are... well, not heroic. When he goes to the Mortal Realm, and decides to die to be with Jinmi, did he ever think of all the people he was damning by dying? No, because him (or the writer) do not care about anyone other than our protagonists. Everyone else's suffering is secondary to them. He expected people to forgive his parents when they had been extremely vile, and he always acted holier-than-thou. He didn't have an interesting background or story, and he was quite boring, though less boring than Jinmi.
-RUNYU: I liked him a lot more on the principle of developing sympathy over what he had gone through. His character development was far more interesting, even when he became obssessive and resentful. I could see where this came from, and as he did stupid shit, you could understand why he did what he did, and it made him far more compelling of a character. In general, I felt more for him because of the obvious bias everyone had, not just for our protagonists, but for the Emperor and Empress as well. Nobody cared that the Emperor and Empress had done extremely vile things. Instead, almost all our secondary characters blamed Runyu for trying to find justice for his mother and for his family. This is why I felt that the writers themselves only cared about our protagonists suffering, regardless of any other person that suffered, which made me dislike the drama more and more.
In terms of plot the plot was absolutely vapid. You could tell were the plot was going, and it was nothing of innovation. There were stupid conveniences that saved our protagonists from having them go through actually interesting happenings. For example, Jinmi (in the Mortal Realm) had to choose between saving her family and serving the King. It was something hard and impactful, and it made me feel for her because it's a lose-lose situation no matter what. But then, the choice she makes doesn't even matter, because magically her family was already protected and she could do what she wanted to do. It made the drama of Jinmi finding it hard to choose asinine, because the plot resolved everything for her anyway. There were many, many scenes that could have been cut because they added nothing to the story. I spent hours with characters I didn't give a shit about because they weren't even relevant to the plot for 2/3 of the drama (like the Demon Realm Princess) or just in general were barely relevant. This drama could have been cut down to 20 episodes, and it would have been able to have tighter storytelling and less meandering around in order to fill time.
However, if there is anything I did like, it was the drama with the protagonists parents. In fact that was the most interesting subplot I saw. I was actually interest in their past, and especially when everyone discovered the truth, how would that affect the present. However, the plot ended quickly, and it almost affected nothing, because at the end of the day nobody did anything regarding what had happened with Jinmi's mom.
The costumes and sets were beautiful, and a pleasure to watch. The CGI is bad, but when you compare to other Chinese dramas, this one's okay. I liked the opening theme.
In terms of acting, I honestly didn't feel the main actress all that much. She did best in her crying scenes, but everything else was dull. The actress for Xufeng's mom used exaggerated gestures that seemed more theatrical than anything else. It would have made more sense if everyone had that direction, but it was obvious it was only her that overacted (it was funny sometimes, though). Everyone else was in various shades of okay.
Overall, if you're bored and want to watch something without thinking too much, this is it. If you're looking for a tighter plot or more interesting characters, watch something else.

I am Luo Yunxi biased. Read my rant about him and how perfect he is in costume dramas
I really liked this one. It was my first xianxia, a fantasy drama. I am writing this off of the long-lasting memories this show left me from 2 years ago.
Story: Jinmi is a lowly little fairy who becomes entangled with the higher-up of the heavenly realm, the fire Phoenix, Xue Feng, and the night immortal, Run Yu.
Characters:
- Jinmi, played by Yang Zi is a bit annoying at the beginning, but it really isn’t her fault. She grows and becomes more mature.
- Xue Feng, played by Deng Lun, is kind of mean to start off with, but love really changed the guy. He just wants to love Jinmi. He will do anything to be with her. Let the man be happy for once.
- Run Yu, played by Luo Yunxi, a seemingly nice, perfect immortal, who turns out to be scheming and selfish.
I say that Yang Zi and Luo Yunxi really shined in this drama. Those two know how to act. Deng Lan fell a bit short for me. His acting was not the best, but I still bought into the story. I felt for the guy. The scene with Run Yu and Jinmi at the end is my favorite. I still think about it from time to time. Yang Zi and Luo Yunxi just are so good in that scene. It is bone-chilling.
- I skipped everything about the second couple. I found them, especially the girl, to be very annoying, and a waste of time.
- Other side characters, like the moon immortal were good comic relief.
- All of the villains are well done. I hate the mother, I hate the girl who simps over Xue Feng. I love to hate Run Yu.
Chemistry:
Xue Feng and Jinmi’s relationship is so tragic and good. Their love for each other was so so strong, strong enough to break the curse that Jinmi had in her heart. Some parts of their relationship even got me crying.
The mortal realm was the best part of their relationship; it is where Jinmi and Xue Feng really fell in love with each other. I cried my eyes out at the end of that. The whole concept of these fantasy characters going to the mortal realm seemed to be innovative to me. I had never seen it be done before (granted this was my second costume drama). Once you get to the mortal realm, the story just gets better and better. So tragic.
Editing/Setting: Pretty believable for me. The editing is not the best. Some of the CGI looks really cheap, but it gets the point across. I really enjoyed the fantasy world. The heavenly realm is beautiful. Where Jinmi lives with the other fairies is pretty too. Excited to see what the team who created this world has in store for Immortality.
Music: The Osts were so so good. Appropriate music is played at appropriate parts of the show. Especially the opening song. They played that song during the parts that were really emotional and now just by hearing the opening of it I tear up. I listen to the most to this day. It’s a shame Luo Yunxi didn’t sing an ost for this show because he has a great voice and I would’ve loved to hear a sad, tragic song sung by him.
Final Thoughts: I am a sucker for tragic stories. I am aware that this story is cliche, but I had never seen anything like it before. I had no idea that they could go to the mortal realm. I just thoroughly enjoined this story. I really did. It was really good, at least for me.
Now for my rant about Luo Yunxi...
Run Yu is amazing. You love to hate the guy. He carries the show a bit at parts when it is falling. I fell in love with Luo Yunxi because of his acting here. It is phenomenal.
Run Yu is a cheeseball from the start and I love it. He is manipulative and slimy. He used JinMi from the start. She is right, he never loved her, he only just loved himself and a higher position. Haha and the scene where he watched Jinmi and Xue Feng do the devil's tango, was so great, he really deserved that one. Run Yu was a gaslighting manipulator throughout this whole show. But I don’t hate him for it, you see why he acts the way he does. Man’s has got a tragic backstory. He really knows how to make emotional scenes just so good. Tears fall effortlessly from his eyes. He is a beautiful cryers. His scales were torn off. His mother died in his arms. His stepmom openly hated him to the point where his mom died. He never had a chance with Jinmi and he knew it; he was friend zoned since the beginning. His wontons were thrown in his face and he got spat at for it even though he died trying to save his disciples ungrateful a**…. Wrong story
- Scene, where the Moon Immortal is pretending to be Run Yu, is hilarious and cute.
- The wedding scene is so beautiful and tragic. I love it. Run Yu is so beautiful in that scene. Peak Chu Wanning (besides the torture bit at the end).
- Scene, where Run Yu’s mother dies, is Chu Wanning also. Gosh, Luo Yunxi is just so beautiful in costume dramas. He transcends the beauty standards that are on Earth. Even if this show were sh*t I would still watch it just because of Luo Yunxi wearing a pretty costume, with his hair all long and majestic and his mannerisms being like that of a graceful professional ballet dancer (which he was).
- Ahh and the ending!!! I love the fact that Run Yu willingly chose to put himself in that much torture in the end. He willingly chose to gasp and moan and tie himself up on his bed (we love the little gasps and moans). It is amazing. Very Chu Wanning of him. I go back and rewatch those scenes every so often just to get my Chu Wanning kick.
Every time Run Yu was on screen I became so engaged. Luo Yunxi is just so beautiful. That man is so ethereal. He cried, I cried. - - He laughed, I cried. He started yelling, I cried. He was shown on screen for a split second, I cried. He just looks that good.
I can see why Luo Yunxi got called in to be Chu Wanning after watching this show. I see Chu Wanning in him. He seriously was born to play the role. Have you seen that man with his hair down gasping and moaning for fresh air? Like… come on now! Makes sense why the casting team of Immortality didn’t even consider anyone but him. The man is the living breathing epitome of Chu Wanning. He is graceful and delicate, yet strong and stern.
I chose to watch this show after reading Dumb Husky and His White Cat Shizun because I wanted to watch a costume drama with Luo Yunxi in it to really get that Chu Wanning feeling. And wowwwwwwwww did it deliver. Obviously, Run Yu is no Chu Wanning, he is quite the opposite actually, but the look alone is just !!!!!
After writing this I think I might rewatch just to really take in Luo Yunxi looking all pretty, beautiful, handsome, attractive, fair, righteous, lovely, impressive, clean-cut, gorgeous, radiant, ethereal, wonderful, riveting, (all the words that describe someone looking good).

Visually Beautiful with Decent Storyline
I really can't say this enters into any of my top drama lists, but was it enjoyable to watch? Most definitely. For cdramas, and well, often with dramas of a certain length, it takes a while for it to pick up but I was hooked from the start. The humour, acting, and premise of the show had me equal parts genuinely laughing out loud and cringing from second-hand embarrassment. However, after the first half of the show (I would say maybe after they left the mortal realm), things kind of fell flat for me and the storyline kind of lost direction. It lost most of its humour, which was one of the aspects of the show I enjoyed the most. Jin Mi, though weak, I had found charming before, but throughout the second half, I was frustrated with her helplessness and character. I think I lost amount of times I rolled my eyes when she kept yelling "stop fighting!" into the void during the last few episodes with her wide-eyed, helpless flailing.
Run Yu was the one that truly stole the show for me, and also was the character that I felt was the most fleshed out. I felt his happiness and his pain, and truly dreaded when he made those bad decisions because I sympathized and pitied his character (also, major kudos to the actor that plays him). Despite his tragic past and upbringing, he still never achieved happiness - he was the one I rooted for throughout the whole show (though through his obsession with Jin Mi, he definitely made a lot of very dubious, shady choices), and while I guess I'm glad he managed to survive, his ending was disappointing.
The reveal of who killed the Water Deity and the reveal of Sui He's true character was one of the things that just felt anticlimactic for me - I felt Jin Mi would have had a stronger say in reaction to what happened to Sui He, considering how she literally killed the only remaining member of her family, and made her mistakenly kill Xu Feng. The ending of the war also felt anticlimactic and a bit of a copout to me, and just felt like a very typical sacrificial drama trope to solve all problems.
One of the things that truly kept my watching was the aesthetics and visual effects of the show. Definitely one of the best I've seen!

STORYLINE: Jin Mi is a grape fairy that saves Xu Feng (well not so much saves as doesn’t eat him like she plans) then he takes her where he lives to experience real life. Wow. Does she experience real life in spades. Lots of funny scenes, sad scenes, frustrating scenes, cool scenes…..lather, rinse, repeat. Jin Mi already has friends in Rou Rou (who is dead…sort of) and Mr. Puchi (not dead) then meets more with her trip to the heavenly realm like Moon Immortal, Run Yu (Night Immortal), and Liu Ying who fill her life with all kinds of adventures.
Jin Mi is a bit emotionally handicapped due to some unfortunate medication given to her at birth by her mother. Xu Feng is a bit in love with Jin Mi almost from the beginning and sadly, so is Run Yu. I’m not sure if Mr. Puchi is in love with her, but he’s a fun character just the same.
CHARACTERS: As I wrote in my article, these characters from top to bottom are fun, entertaining, sad, depressing, frustrating, and annoying. In short, you won’t be bored with a single one of them, even the wacky Moon Immortal and his strange red strings.
MUSIC: The music was nice and I do enjoy the YouTube videos online using those same songs. The battle scene could have had more ominous music, but that was spoiled again by YouTube as a fan of the show posted a much better version musically.
I still like Eternal Love more than this show, mainly because of Mark Chao (sigh…..) but this C-drama had to be the most incredible experience as I watched every character just sparkle on the screen. I found every single performance stellar. Leo Luo as Run Yu, INSANELY GOOD (could talk about his performance for hours) and Yang Zi and Deng Lun, I give them a standing ovation for portraying such an epic love story.
If you have a heart condition, I don’t recommend binge watching this show. I did for the last 10 episodes and it took 24 hours to calm down.

I've watched Eternal Love and Story of Ming Lan before this drama but I did not regret my decision. If I was to watch those drama after this drama, my expectation is going to be so high for the other 2 then. Just when I thought that Eternal Love was one of the best Chinese Historical drama that I've watched, Ashes of Love proved me wrong. This drama was so good, beyond amazing. I did not skip any moment. Everything about this drama is perfect. I've cried REALLY HARD, also laughed a lot throughout 63 episodes. It was an emotional roller coaster. If you are hesitating to watch, DON'T just start on it. I was skeptical at first but I'm so glad that I watched it. SPOILER ALERT!!!
One of the greatest love triangle I've ever seen. I still feel bad for Fish Immortal, but I am glad that he realized what he did wrong and reflected. Leo Luo is such a great actor, I can feel his pain and emptiness :( Also when he was playing the Snake Immortal, he did such an excellent job, I was shook lol
Deng Lun (Xu Feng) and Yang Zi (Jin Mi) had one of the best chemistry on screen!!! You can really feel that they really love each other. Their love for each other is so deep, they made you laughed, giggled, cried, and smiled for them. Their time in the Moral Realm was one of my favorite, like it was so refreshing and depressing at the same time. But at least we really get to see how they starting to develop feeling for each other and I really appreciated the director for their love story in the moral realm. Well done! I was a little annoyed with Xu Feng's character at first but when he explained everything at the end, it made me cried even more.
Let's talk about my favorite second's love story of all time now, the Demon's Princess and Mu Ci. At first I was like ok...another basic love story for the support roles. BUT I WAS WRONG!!! I ship them so hard. I cried so much when he passed away but Princess was such a strong female character. She is a badass!!! I was glad that she was able to gave birth to her daughter hehehehe <3
Snake Immortal and Fox Fairy (Uncle) were my favorites! They are the heros in this drama. Enough said, you gotta watch them to see how they perfectly portrayed their roles. I LOVE THEM!!!
Overall, the rest of the supporting characters did such excellent jobs. The evil ones made me hate them, Heavenly Empress and Heavenly Emperor were match made in heaven lol they are both evil.
Now I can't move on from this drama. The music is perfect btw <3

A Classic Fairly Tale Drama, best ever
Ashes of love is my no 1 Top Fairy Tales drama Ever so far. It is long, could be shorter but everything else is perfect. Somehow it manages to blend the Casting, the emotional Story, CGI, the funny and the heart breaking elements seamlessly that makes AOL Classic and unforgettable drama ever. At the end of 2021 haven’t seen anything else that tops AOL.OST is so good, amazing. Still listen to them 2 years later.
Acting: No one, absolutely no one has awkward acting here, this is so rare. YZ, DL and LYX are all first rate. But especially Lou Yunxi, how as a villain, millions of watcher rotted for him. Only exceptional character interpretation with out of the box acting can achieve this rare phenomenon.
Runyu is the best character written I’ve seen in C Dramaland. Leo Luo delivered Runyu beyond everyone expectation. No wonder the C official newspaper stamps Runyu as top 10 CLASSIC character in last DECADE. Usually after watching a good drama, I would forget about these characters, but Runyu is different, I remember him years later. I don’t forget his voice, his classic phrases his smooth flight scene, his elegant walk, his tears and pain, his madness and redemption at the end. Perhaps if Runyu is not made in China, LYX would have won an award for his performance.
I have yet to see another character as memorable as Runyu, but perhaps when Immortality airs, LYX cold but super complex "Shizun" might have a fighting chance to top Runyu.
