I discovered Korean Dramas in 2018, the hardest year of my life,  while I was grieving the loss of my spouse.  My husband was killed in a car crash on his way to work.  A woman, driving under the influence of many narcotics, swerved into his lane and crashed into his Jeep.  He died on impact.  The unexpected loss of your spouse is like having your entire world suddenly shatter, and the life that you’ve known morphs into something completely unrecognizable.  

Every thing changed in that moment.  I couldn’t sleep at night and I turned to television to escape.  I couldn’t watch any of the shows that my husband and I watched together.  It just was too painful.  It got to where I no longer wanted to watch American television and I stumbled upon a Korean Drama on Netflix, “My Secret Romance,” and I was hooked.  From there I watched every Romance KDrama recommended by users on MDL and YouTube.  Everything I watched was excellent and it kept my mind occupied from the pain of loss.

During the next five years I didn’t leave my house much.  I stayed home watching KDramas all day and night.  My watch list grew to an unhealthy amount.  I wasn’t living.  This was me simply surviving.  In time I figured out how to live with the loss.  I have somehow found the joy of living again.  I’m still watching my dramas but I’m mixing them in with my everyday life.  I’m no longer watching to survive my grief but for my own enjoyment.

My husband was the love of my life.  He treated me with respect and kindness.  I cannot imagine myself with anyone else.  Now I get my “romance fix” by watching Korean, Japanese, and Chinese dramas and reading trash romance novels.  I’m so happy to be a part of this community. I’m forever grateful these dramas for helping me cope with the pain of loss.
